Robert J. Monser

HARTWICK — Robert Joseph Monser, 21, of Hartwick, and most recently of Atlanta, Ga., passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 21, 2003, while at work.

He was born Aug. 1, 1982, the son of Peter and Karla (Grant) Monser.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of the Building Trades Program at OAOC BOCES in Milford.

He was currently a self-employed contractor working in the Atlanta area.

Bob loved riding his four-wheeler and motorcycle. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Bob will be deeply missed by his family and his friends.

He is survived by his parents, Peter and Karla Monser, of Hartwick; his brother, John Monser of Hartwick; his sister, Katie Monser of Hartwick; a very special nephew, Jacob Monser; his girlfriend, Jamie Backus, and her mother, Barb Green of Burlington Flats; his maternal grandmother, Charlotte Grant of Oneonta; his paternal grandfather, Francis "Buddy" Monser and his wife, Myrna of Oneonta; his paternal grandmother, Estella Jones and her husband, Roy of Florida; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Hubert Grant.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert J. Monser will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with Bob's family and friends presiding.

Friends may call Tuesday evening, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Edward V. Krupp

GARRATTSVILLE — Memorial services for Edward V. Krupp will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 12 Ford Ave., Oneonta.

Elsie M. Bramley

MASONVILLE — Elsie M. Bramley, 95, a resident at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, and formerly of Masonville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 in Oxford.

She was born Oct. 11, 1908, in Union Grove, the daughter of the late Howard and Anna Metzdorf Brower.

She married Herbert Lee Bramley on April 30, 1932, in Andes. He predeceased her on Feb. 3, 1964.

Elsie was a dietary assistant for The Hospital, Sidney, retiring in 1972. She was a longtime member of the Masonville Federated Church and the Masonville Grange No. 1482. She was the church historian and an elder of her church for several years.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and Alan Mugglin of Bainbridge, Ann and Gilbert Laing of Earlville; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Maryon Bramley of Mulberry, Fla.; daughter, Pamela Bramley of Rome; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a niece, a nephew, and several cousins.

A son, Donald A. Bramley, a brother, Anthony Brower, two sisters, Ethel Norris and Florence Shaver and a grandson, James Mugglin predeceased Elsie.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the Andes Cemetery, Andes with the Rev. Robert M. Howard, pastor of the Masonville Federated Church officiating.

Friends are invited to call after 11 a.m. Monday at the C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Federated Church, Masonville, NY 13804.

Stella M. Christian

NEW BERLIN — Stella M. Christian, 95, of New Berlin, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

She was born June 4, 1908, in Nadeau, Mich., to Oliver and Maude (Brazo) LaFond. Her childhood was spent in the Rapids River and Ternnary area of Michigan.

Stella married Lloyd J. Christian on Jan. 10, 1931. He died Oct. 7, 1974.

She worked at Kraft Foods for 10 years and was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church of New Berlin.

Stella is survived by two sons, Robert R. Christian of Norwich and Timothy Christian of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Karen Kappel

COOPERSTOWN — Karen Lee Kappel, of Cooperstown, died on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, of complications related to ovarian cancer. She was 57.

After retiring as a nurse practitioner at North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove on Long Island, Karen opened the Miss Mae Wilbur's Bed & Breakfast in Cooperstown. She earned her Master Gardener's Certificate through and volunteered at Cornell Cooperative Extension. An avid supporter of the local arts, Karen was also a member of the Fenimore Quilt Club and sang in the choir at St. Mary's Church. She loved traveling; scuba diving and animals and had her two dogs certified to visit nursing homes. She was a member of and a volunteer in many activities of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Donna Kappel-Skopek and Karen Kappel-Radecki; her son, George Kappel, and her grandchildren, Ryan, Jake, Lauren and Samantha.

A prayer service was held at the Francis P. Devine Funeral Home in Oyster Bay followed by interment at the Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

A local memorial service will be planned and announced in the local papers.

It was Karen's wish that her friends be thanked for being a part of her life and for their help, support and prayers during the past year. The staff at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Cancer Center is also thanked for their help and encouragement.

Edward V. Krupp

GARRATTSVILLE — Memorial services for Edward V. Krupp will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 12 Ford Ave., Oneonta.

Albert J. Tomao

WALTON — Albert J. (Albie) Tomao of Walton, a longtime resident and friend to many, died after a short battle with cancer Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at home surrounded by his loving family in Walton. He was 73.

Albie was born Dec. 20, 1929, in Brooklyn, to Joseph and Caterino (Manganaro) Tomao.

He was educated in Treadwell and graduated from the Kellogg School in 1948.

On April 21, 1956, he married Mary Lou Hitt at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Walton.

Albie served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1953. In 2003, he received the Medal of Merit from New York state and also the Korean War Service Medal.

Albie started work at Scintilla/Bendix in Sidney in 1951, in the toolroom, and he was president of the IAM&AW Local Lodge 1529 for 19 years before becoming an hourly supervisor in 1984. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Tomao lived in Walton for the past 50 years. Albie was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Walton.

He served on the Board of Trustees for the village of Walton; was president of the Walton Mountain Sportsman's Club, as well as a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member and served as past commander of the VFW and the American Legion of Walton and was membership chairman for the American Legion Post 32.

He was the summer youth supervisor for the Walton Youth Summer Employment Program for OET. Albie owned and operated the Walton Liquor Store for 17 years. He served on the Board of Directors for BOCES. He was the past recording secretary for the New York State Council of Machinists, a chairman of the Walton Democratic Committee, a past member of the Walton Lions Club and an honorary member of the Walton Fire Department and a member of DADs.

Albie's family meant everything to him; he was especially proud of his seven grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his love of life and of people young and old alike. He told some great stories and liked to put a smile on everyone's face. He enjoyed his coffee club at McDonalds, lunches with his brother, going to football games and golfing with his friends. He was a very generous, kind and caring person who will be deeply missed.

Albie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Lou; a daughter and son-in-law, Concetta and Douglas Hoyt of Sidney; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Darlene Tomao of Walton; grandchildren, Aza Hoyt and wife, Jennifer, of Ithaca, Chanda Hoyt of Unadilla, Teagra Hoyt of Sidney, Trevor, Adrienne and Dominic Tomao of Walton and Aaron Naples of Colorado; a brother, Joseph Tomao and his companion, Joyce Warren, of Sidney; a sister, Antonette Vascellaeo and her husband, Sal, of Brooklyn; a brother, Andrew Tomao and his wife, Jayne, of Trout Creek; his mother-in-law, Delphine Hitt, of East Branch; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Victor and Doris Hitt of Bainbridge; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Vivian and Gorden Miller of Walton, Stacia and Louis Wood of Walton and Delphine and Robert Jaynes of Valdez, Alaska; as well as many nieces and nephews and a lot of wonderful friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, John Tomao; a brother, John Tomao; a brother, Lawrence and wife, Roberta, Tomao; a brother-in-law, Meltheor Hitt; and his father-in-law, William Hitt.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Walton, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating. Burial will follow at the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

The family will be present from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Walton, NY 13856 or to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Albert J. "Albie" Tomao.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton.

Morris D. Liedke

MILFORD — Mr. Morris D. Liedke, 82, of Milford, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare.

Mo was born in Maryland on Feb. 13, 1921, a son of Frederick and Alma (Cady) Liedke.

He was a graduate of Milford High School, after which he went to work at the Scintilla plant in Sidney.

On Feb. 9, 1945, Morris married Zelma Sutherland, who predeceased him on June 2, 1996, in the Methodist Church in Oneonta. Together they bought his current home in Milford in 1945.

Mo owned and operated Liedke Chevrolet in Milford for many years. He then worked at Medical Coaches in Oneonta as sales manager. Most recently, Mo worked at Gary Enck's Car Store. He also drove a school bus in Milford for years.

Mo's main interests in life were centered around music and automobiles.

He was a member of the Cooperstown Community Band since the 1930s, a lifetime member of the musician's union, he played with the Ernie Russ Band, he directed the summer Marching Band for Milford Central School, he played in dance bands for many years, he was a collector of Big Band albums and autographs, he was a jazz enthusiast, having gone on a trip five years ago on a Mississippi River Boat Tour, and sharing his enthusiasm for music with his family and friends.

Mo loved everything about cars. He could identify every car and could tell you to whom he had sold that kind of car. He was a collector of antique and classic cars as well as toy cars. Mo also enjoyed his yellow Corvettes over the past years. He was the announcer for the Rolling Antiquers Car Club in Norwich for more than 25 years. Mo had a real mind for detail; he could quote specifications for many cars. He was also an accomplished pilot and aircraft owner.

Morris was a former mayor of Milford, a school board member and president, a charter member of the Milford Emergency Squad, a member and former president of the Milford Fire Department, a member of the Rolling Antiquers Club and a member of the Milford United Methodist Church.

Mo is survived by a daughter and her husband, Maureen L. and A. Ronald Johnson of Cooperstown; a son and his wife, Mark F. and Jennifer Liedke of LeRoy; six grandchildren, Erica, Alicia, Evan and Brett Johnson of Cooperstown, and Alison and Paul Liedke of LeRoy; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Katherine and Robert Dickman of Delhi; a sister-in-law, Mae Liedke of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Zelma, Morris was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Liedke.

Mo's family would like to give a special thanks to his extended family, Carl, Nancy and Christopher St. John, Laurie and Gary Enck, the staff at McDonalds, his friends at the Field of Dreams Steak House and the staff at Bassett Healthcare.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at the Milford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Maryland Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, NY 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Christina Fleming

UNADILLA — Christina Sue Fleming, 85, of Unadilla, died Friday morning, Oct. 24, 2003.

She was born on Nov. 30, 1917, in Albany, the daughter of Lewis and Christina (Underwood) Fleming.

Christina became a hard-working farmer, who loved the outdoors, animals and birds. She also enjoyed people and always liked to help elderly friends and neighbors.

For 25 years she wrote the Wells Bridge news column in Sidney's Tri-Town News.

She was very interested in the Four County Library Bookmobile, now Cybermobile, and was always working to get new patrons to go there each month to get books.

Christina was a very frank person and possessed a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor. She enjoyed reading, taking pictures, talking on the telephone, doing crossword puzzles, writing letters, sending birthday and get-well cards, and gardening.

Although she was not a member, she had a special interest and caring for the Sand Hill United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Wells Bridge Senior Citizen Club and also a member of an interesting birthday club, which at one time had more than 600 members. All were born the same year and lived in the United States, in Canada, England and Australia.

Christina is survived by a sister, Catherine, who lived with her; a sister-in-law, Iris Fleming of Richmond, Va.; a nephew and wife, Donald and Evelyn Fleming of Chesterfield, Va.; a great-nephew, Mark Fleming in the diplomatic corps in Armenia; a great-niece, Nora Fleming, a sophomore at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.

She was predeceased by her parents; and by a brother, Donald, who died in 1980.

There will be no calling hours.

The funeral will be at the Sand Hill United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, of the Sand Hill church, and Pastor David Steensma, of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Christina's name to the Sand Hill United Methodist Church or the Wells Bridge First Responders.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., in Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
