Georgia Craig

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Georgia Rose Chase Mills Craig, 78, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

Born in Schenevus, she was a daughter of the late Lucy and John W. Chase.

Mrs. Craig was a graduate of Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy. She attended the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.

She was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corp., Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville County Medical Society Alliance, International Lactation Consultants Association and the Liberty Belles.

Preceding Mrs. Craig in death were her daughter, Mozelle Amy Mills; her two husbands, Dr. Willard Mills and Dr. William Craig Jr.; her brother, Richard Chase of Lake George; and her sister, Ruth C. Bley of Eden.

Surviving are her sons, Willard Timothy Mills and wife, Cheryle, of North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Robert William Mills and wife, Mary Bea, of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Melinda M. Salley and husband, Ned, of Laurinburg, N.C.; grandchildren, Edward, Willard and Laura Salley, and Elizabeth and Robert Mills Jr.; great-grandson, Aaron Seay of White Pines, Tenn.; a special nephew, Andy Chase and wife, Pat, of Conyers, Ga.; and several other nephews and nieces of the Mills, Chase and Craig families.

Also surviving are her stepfamily, Sally C. Aldridge and husband, Marion, of Columbia, David Craig and wife, Linda, and Dr. Bill Craig III and wife, Pam, all of Greenville, Robert Craig and wife, Anne, of Aiken; and nine stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 27, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steven Vance and Barbara Stoop officiating. Interment will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for one hour following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC 29605, the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615, Camp Sunshine, 6429 Bishop Ave., Columbia, SC 29203, or the charity of one's choice.

Clara J. Smith

WEST WINFIELD — Clara J. Smith, 69, of Plainfield, went to be with her Lord on Friday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2003.

She was born Dec. 13, 1933, in South Kortright, the daughter of Myron J. and Anna D. (Roe) Mead.

She married Hal L. Smith on April 28, 1962, at the West Exeter Methodist Church.

Clara was a member of the United Methodist Church in West Exeter, and the Unadilla Forks Fire Department Auxiliary.

She was a devoted wife and mother; instilling in her children and extended family the importance of being a humble Christian. She provided comfort, warmth and love in her home and a safe haven for those in need.

Clara loved nature, country/western and Gospel music. As a teenager, she and her sisters sang on the program Radio Ranch sponsored out of Oneonta on WDOS.

Clara will be remembered by her family as a small woman with huge presence.

Clara is survived by her husband, Hal; her children and their spouses, Karen M. and Steven Laymon, Dale J. Smith, and Diane M. and Michael Wise; her grandchildren, Amanda L. Clark, Heather S. Clark, Marleen S. Smith, Michael S. Wise Jr., Ellen G. Smith, Cynthia A. Smith and Jason S. Smith; her stepgrandchildren, Steven J. Laymon and Kayla A. Laymon; her sisters, Anna Mae Massey and husband, Raymond, and Janet Wittko and husband, Robert; a special niece, Donna L. Harrelson, and her children, Nichelle, Shaine and Jared; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Clara was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy A. Barrett.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 27, at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Unadilla Forks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Clara's memory to either the Cancer Foundation, 1656 Sunset Ave., Utica, NY 13502 or the West Exeter United Methodist Church.

John A. Mesick

AUSTERLITZ — Wildlife artist, avid hunter and sportsman John "Jack" Arthur Mesick Jr., 52, of Angel Hill Road, Austerlitz, met his Lord Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Albany Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Jack was born Dec. 14, 1950, in Hudson, is the son of John A. and Frances (Gustafson) Mesick Sr. of Chatham.

He was a 1969 graduate of Chatham High School and an art major graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh.

Jack spent his life enjoying the great outdoors. His love of nature, tireless hours studying and observing the birds and animals that he drew so perfectly and his devoted wife, brought him to the stature of a well-known pencil artist. Along with his love of nature, his mountain land in Roxbur, and his drawing, he enjoyed laughing, storytelling and a day on the green.

Mr. Mesick was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Chatham.

Besides his parents, Jack and Frances Mesick of Chatham, he is survived by his wife, Edie (Davis) Mesick of Austerlitz; sister, Christine Callahan of Chatham; brother, James Mesick of Guilderland; sister, Pati Lanphear and husband, Darin, of Ghent; mother-in-law, Yvonne Davis of Chatham; sister-in-law, Louise Patane of Sharon, Mass. Survived also by two nieces and five nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. James R.C. Church, Chatham, with the Rev. Gary Gelfenbien, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the St. James R.C. Church.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jack Mesick Jr. Art Scholarship Fund in care of the Wenk Funeral Home, Chatham, NY 12037.

Mary M. Millus

BAINBRIDGE — Mary M. Millus of Bainbridge died on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at 4:26 p.m. at her residence in Bainbridge, after a long illness.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1919, in Binghamton, the daughter of Clair M. and Nellie (Stanton) Smith.

She married Victor Millus in Forest City, Pa., in 1939.

She worked at Amphenol in Sidney and was a meat wrapper at Grand Union in Norwich.

She is survived by her faithful companion, Buffy; a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Lawrence Rowe of Bainbridge; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Thelma Smith and Fred and Debra Smith, all of Bainbridge; sisters-in-law, Mary Smith of Sidney and Wilma Smith of Bainbridge; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Millus of Sidney; and several nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

She was predeceased by her parents, Clair and Nellie Smith; and husband, Victor Millus, in 1980; and son, James Millus, in 1987; two brothers, William Smith in 1997, and Stephen Smith in 1999.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or to the Greenlawn Cemetery Association in Bainbridge, in care of Lois Mitchell, 139 Pearl St., Bainbridge, NY.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N. Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Eric Linzer

MOUNT VISION — Eric Linzer, 38, of Mount Vision, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1965, in Union, N.J., the son of Joseph and Alice (Sorensen) Linzer.

Eric will be remembered as a kind and sensitive man. He was loved as a son, father, brother, nephew and cousin.

He is survived by his mother, Alice Linzer, of Mount Vision; three brothers and their wives, Joseph and Linda Linzer of Texas, Daniel and Dina Linzer of Colorado, and David and Pam Linzer of California; his sister, Susan Bardin of California; his son, Erik Jr., of Canada; his daughter, Elise, of Kansas City, Mo.; and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Linzer.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220 in memory of Eric Linzer.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Gladys Wyckoff Knapp

OTEGO — Gladys Wyckoff Knapp, 78, of Elizabethtown, Pa., and formerly of Otego, passed away at the home of her daughter, Deborah Simonds in Otego, on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003.

She was born in Prattsville, on June 27, 1925, the daughter of Leslie and Ethel (Delmarter) Oliver. She married Theodore Knapp in 1976 in Morris.

She lived in Otego from 1942 to 1972 and then moved to Elizabethtown, Pa. She worked as a nursing assistant for 12 years at the Masonic Home while in Elizabethtown. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Moose Club in Elizabethtown. Gladys loved to work with the flowers in her garden. She also had a great love of fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore Knapp, of Elizabeth town, Pa.; a son, Cecil "Bud" Wyckoff and his special friend, Barbara, of Walton; a daughter, Deborah (Gardner) Simonds and her husband, Carl, of Otego; a son, Donald Wyckoff and his wife, Bev, of Otego; a daughter, Denise (Burns) Marvin and her husband, Robert, of Otego; a stepdaughter, Deb Yaro and her friend, John Eltz, of Morris; a stepson, Kenneth Knapp and his wife, Virginia, of Ilion. She is also survived by her brothers, Donald Oliver, of Lakeworth Fla., Henry Oliver, of Prattsville, a brother, Robert Mellott, of Elizabethtown, Pa., and William Mellott, of Lexington; her sisters Lula Soules of Windham and Florence McAdams of Oneonta; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was predeceased by her first husband, Cecil B. Wyckoff, who passed away June 14, 1989; a son, Henry Stanley Wyckoff; a daughter, Darlene Florence Wyckoff; a brother, George, and sister, Margaret.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Ken Brookens, pastor of the Living Water Faith Fellowship Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Gladys.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Frances M. Birns

MARGARETVILLE — Frances M. Birns, 92, of Margaretville, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born June 27, 1911, in Staten Island to Thomas and Margaret "Rita" O'Neil McMahon.

She married Herbert Birns on May 5, 1941, and was widowed in 1955 with three young children.

Mrs. Birns worked as a secretary, retiring in 1978 as secretary to the principal of Albert Leonard Junior High School in New Rochelle. She was the long-time secretary of the New Rochelle Campership Fund and had been an active volunteer with Civil Defense.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Birns moved to the Catskills where she resided in New Kingston, Fleischmanns and Margaretville. She was a parishioner of Sacred Hearth Roman Catholic Church and a volunteer at the Margaretville Hospitality Shop.

She is survived by three sons, Lewis Birns of North White Plains, Richard Birns of Philadelphia, Pa., and Bill Birns of Fleischmanns; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Rita and Margaret.

Calling hours are from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt, celebrant.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions in memory of Frances M. Birns may be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Adolf G. Blum

WINDHAM — Adolf G. Blum, 62, died on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Albany Medical Center Albany. He was a resident of Staten Island and owned a home in Ashland where he spent weekends.

Born on April 28, 1941, in Staten Island, he was the son of Otto and Olga Blum.

He was a transportation mechanic, employed by Con Edison, Staten Island, for 36 years until his retirement in 1999.

Mr. Blum was the loving husband of Gloria Strausser Blum. Besides his wife, he is also survived by a son, Andrew G. Blum, of Staten Island; a daughter, Darlene Mattice and her husband, Dennis of Prattsville; three grandchildren, Dennis Mattice Jr., Kenny Mattice and Danielle Kellerhouse.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Veen and his son, Ronald J. Blum.

Viewing will be on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave., Staten Island, and on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Services will be at p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home with interment following at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.
