James E. Laboda

ONEONTA — James E. Laboda, 48, of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1955, in Delhi the son of John E. and Nancy (Curtin) Laboda.

For many years he worked in the produce department of Genuardi's Family Market in Philadelphia, Pa.

Jim was raised in Oneonta, and graduated from the Oneonta High School in 1973.

He is survived by his daughter, Nicole LaBounty, her husband, Rudy, and their daughter, Rowan Mary; his parents, John and Nancy Laboda, of Port Richey, Fla.; his sisters and a brother, and their spouses, Mary and David Brown of North Syracuse, John and Dayle Laboda of West Suffield, Conn., Anne Laboda of Catonsville, Md., and Joan and Eric Shaler of Baldwinsville; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Sunday Nov. 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rehabilitation Support Service, PO Box 781, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Shirley A. Adams

WALTON — Shirley A. Adams, 61, of Walton, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 30, 2003, in Bassett Hospital Cooperstown, after a long illness.

Shirley was born June 5, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Bernard and Reva Baskin Pines. She was a graduate of Venice High School, Venice, Calif.

On Aug. 14, 1975, she married Bruce E. Adams in California.

Prior to coming to Walton in 2000, Shirley lived in Berwick, Pa. She was last employed at the Holiday Inn, Port Jervis. Earlier she was employed by American Red Ball Moving Company in Pennsylvania.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce E. Adams; three daughters, Marilyn R. Wiener, Julie A. and David Hinkley, both of Walton, and Stacy A. Adams and her fiancι, Michael Tellep, of Scranton, Pa.; one son, Eric B. Edwards, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Pines, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Steven Pines, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Altanah L. (Midge) Fairbairn

GRAND GORGE — Altanah L. (Midge) Fairbairn, 81, of Grand Gorge, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

She was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Seager, to David and Edna (Pelham) Fairbairn.

Altanah married Orville Ballard in 1948, at Fleischmanns. He died in 1972. Altanah lived with a close friend, Merton Mayes in Clovesville, for several years.

She was employed at several different workplaces in the Fleischmanns area.

Altanah was a long time Fleischmanns resident and most recently lived in Grand Gorge. She enjoyed sewing for friends and family and was a collector of trinkets.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas and Jonathon Ballard of Grand Gorge; a daughter, Faith Cherry, of Fleischmanns; 11 grandchildren, Michael and Scott Ballard of California, Scott Ballard of Maine, Michelle Ballard of Norway, Karen, Jennifer, Mary, David, and Thomas Ballard Jr., Jamie Williams and Jason Yaekel, all of New York, and seven great-grandchildren.

Altanah was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters, Arthur, Aileen, Donald, Claude, Clarence, Herman, George, David, Richard and Mary.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with Pastor Kristina Hansen officiating.

Committal services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Philip J. Patrick

SIDNEY — Philip John Patrick, beloved son, father and grandfather went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, following a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 20, 1947, he was the son of Joan Wagner Ciallelo and Warren Hartwell Hutcheson and adoptive father, Joseph Francis Patrick.

He is survived by his children, Shannon Patrick, Carey Patrick and his wife, Jill; Kelli Patrick and Danny Patrick. He is also survived by his three sisters; one brother; seven grandchildren; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He graduated from Sidney Central High School and was an accomplished brick and stone mason. Phil's zest for life and love for family will be greatly missed

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Maya Nickels

MARGARETVILLE — Maya Maria Nickels, 89, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Countryside Residential Care Center, Delhi.

She was born March 14, 1914, in Germany to Karl and Maria (Wurtz) Ottenthal.

Maya married Marius Nickels on May 27, 1944, in Germany. He died Jan. 19, 2001.

A resident of Margaretville for 16 years, she lived in Delhi since the death of her husband.

She is survived by a son, Waldemar Nickels of Monroe, N.C., and one grandson.

Funeral and committal services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Marion L. Keyes

COOPERSTOWN — Marion L. Keyes, 96, of Cooperstown, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany.

She was born in Cooperstown on Dec. 16, 1906, a daughter of John H. and Anna Belle R. (Short) Becker.

Marion was a graduate of Cooperstown High School, as well as the Utica School of Commerce. She worked as a secretary for the Otsego County Department of Social Services for many years.

On June 6, 1956, she married Raymond L. Keyes in the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown.

Marion was a member as well as secretary of the Cooperstown Alumni Association for many years, a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. She also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years and she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 60 years.

Marion enjoyed reciting poetry, reading, crocheting and senior meals. She was also interested in music, including playing the piano for Eastern Star.

She is survived by nieces, Elna Dickison of Cooperstown, Murriel Dickison of Rome, and Patricia Claudine (O'Hara) Fisher, whom she helped raise, and her husband, John A. Fisher of Elkhart, Ind.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Donna Szabo, John P. Fisher, Herbert J. O'Hara Jr., and Erin; cousins, John, Andrew and James Short and Lyle Reynolds of Cooperstown.

Besides her parents, Marion was predeceased by her husband, Raymond; her sisters, Martha Dickison, Eleanor Decker, Claudine O'Hara and Bertha and Bessie Becker; and a nephew, Richard Dickison.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen Quinlan, co-pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Dorothy Nagel

ROXBURY — Dorothy Nagel, 80, of Roxbury, and formerly of Deer Park, Wantagh and Flushing on Long Island, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1923, in Flushing, the daughter of Stanley Czyzyk and Marianna Grodzicka.

Dorothy worked at Bulova Watch Co. for 25 years, where she met and married her first husband, Helmut Petzold, who passed away in 1970. Her second husband, Arthur Nagel, died on Nov. 4, 1994.

She was a resident of Roxbury since 1974.

During World War II she wrote letters every night to her four brothers, who were in the Armed Forces.

Dorothy was an active parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish and served as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Good Council in Roxbury and Sacred Heart in Margaretville.

She gave her time as a volunteer to Mountainside Residential Care Center and Kirkside Adult Home.

She will be missed by many, many friends.

Dorothy is survived by her dear brothers, Henry Czyzyk and his wife, Genevieve, and Stanley Czyzyk and his wife, Gloria. She was the loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one stepson; and the loving grandmother of stepgrandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Margaretville, with a funeral Mass at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell and the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt as celebrants.

Burial will be in Mt. Saint Mary's Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, in Flushing.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Michael Androski

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Michael S. Androski, 85, of Monticello Street, entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, Nov. 1, 2003, in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1918, in Little Falls, son of the late John and Katherine Holiat Androski.

A lifelong Richfield Springs area resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School "Class of 1936." Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1939. As an Army reservist he was reactivated in 1940, serving in World War II in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on Jan. 8, 1946.

On Aug. 1, 1948, he married the former Olga Steckler in Herkimer, a devoted union of 45 years, she preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1993.

For 25 years he worked as a compressor operator for the Tennessee Gas Co. in West Winfield, retiring in 1979.

Mike had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. He was a member of the Richfield Springs Sportsman Club. An avid sports fan, he loved to play golf.

He will greatly missed by many, especially his family.

Surviving are one son, Paul M. and his wife, Jill, Androski of Chicago; a daughter, Helene C. Androski and her husband, Larry Gray, of Madison, Wis.; one sister, Ann Svitek of Kissimmee, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Olga, two brothers, Peter and Charles Androski, and two sisters, Leona Harris and Mary Androski predeceased him.

Burial Office and Holy Communion will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector will officiate. Interment with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lakeview Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the church service.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
