Michael J. Patello, 88, of Syracuse died Thursday. Born in Seneca Falls, he lived in Fresno,  Calif., and Rochester before moving to Syracuse 75 years ago. He retired in 1976 from Allied Chemical after 25 years. He had also worked at Brown Lipe-Chapin for 10 years. He was a communicant of St. Daniel's Church. Survivors: His wife of 65 years, the former Esther DeFio; a daughter, Maryann Vigliotti of Syracuse; a son, Samuel of Belmont; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Services: 9:15 a.m. Saturday at Farone & Son Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Daniel's Church. Burial, Assumption Cemetery. William Pfohl, 74, of Syracuse died Wednesday. He was born in Syracuse. He retired in 1989 as a clothes cutter for J.J. Pietrafesa Co. after 46 years. He was past president of Local 220 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and was a member of Our Lady of Pompei Church and it's Holy Name Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife, the former Leila De Palma; a daughter, Donna Coyle of Manlius; a son, William J. of Liverpool; a brother, Raymond of Fredericksburg, Va.; two grandchildren. Services: 9:15 a.m. Saturday at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Pompei Church. Burial, Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. She worked for General Drafting Co. in Convent Station, N.J., for several years and volunteered at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Harmony Circle at Memorial Hospital and Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. Her husband, Charles M., died in 1989. Susan M. Williams

Susan M. Smith Williams, 42, of 4880 Breckenridge Road, Syracuse, died Thursday. She was born in Syracuse and lived there most of her life. She graduated from Bishop Ludden High School in 1977 and attended Onondaga Community College and Maria Regina College. She worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Syracuse Security. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church on Onondaga Hill. She was a Brownie troop leader and a volunteer at Split Rock School and Camillus Middle School. Survivors: Her husband, John T.; a daughter, Jenna Williams; a son, Shane; her parents, Frederick J. and Mary Jane Smith of Onondaga Hill; three sisters, Lynne Smith of Clay, Mary Beth Bova of Onondaga Hill and Jennifer Smith of Camillus; a brother, Frederick Smith of Saratoga Springs. She retired in 1972 after 30 years as a licensed practical nurse at Syracuse Psychiatric Hospital. Walter M. Hoyt Jr., 92, of Nixon Avenue, Homer, died Wednesday at Groton Nursing Facility. He was born in Somerville, Mass. He retired in 1974 after 38 years as manager of the Star Market Co., Medford, Mass., and Boston. Following retirement, he was a custodian for 14 years at the First Baptist Church, Port Charlotte, Fla. A son, Walter M. III, died previously. Survivors: His wife of 68 years, the former Ethel J. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1970 and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association in Syracuse and the American Legion. His wife, Dorothy Lee Patterson, died previously. Curtis Thomas, 96, formerly of The Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave., Sherrill, died Thursday at Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility. Born in Cortland, he lived in New York City before moving to the Sherrill area three years ago. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Harvard University. He retired in the 1960s after 10 years as an English and creative writing professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He wrote and published a mystery novel, "Devil Takes the Foremost," and also wrote several magazine stories. His wife, the former Elissa Landi, 1930s movie actress and novelist, died in 1948. Survivors: A daughter, Caroline Thomas Benes of New York City; two grandchildren. Services: To be announced. Burial, Oakhill Cemetery, Newburyport, Mass. G.F.
