Malcolm C. Rowe

LAURENS — Malcolm C. Rowe, 77, of Laurens, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born in the Town of DeLancey on Dec. 22, 1925, the son of Carl and Elsie Rowe.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnnston Funeral Home in Morris on Monday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.

It was Malcolm's request that no funeral services be held and that no flowers be sent.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or the Catskill Area Hospice, or the American Cancer Society, in his memory.

Burial will be in Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Betty Lou Carso

FLY CREEK — Betty Lou (Walker) Carso, 70, of Fly Creek, passed away unexpectedly, Friday morning, Nov. 7, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Born on May 6, 1933, in Queens, she was raised in Bayside and graduated from Bayside High School. After attending Adelphi College, she was employed by Bankers Trust in Bayside.

On May 19, 1962, she married Brian F. Carso Sr. in the Bayside Methodist Church. In 1978 they moved to Richfield Springs, where she was employed by the Bank of Albany. She was later employed by Key Bank in Cooperstown and then served as a clerk in the Otsego County Real Property Tax Department.

A 43-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she began her membership with the Bayside Pleiades Chapter No. 737, O.E.S. and later joined with Arbutus Chapter No. 317, O.E.S. in Richfield Springs. In 1951, Betty was Beloved Queen of Rising Star Organization of Triangles No. 69 in Bayside. She also served for many years as a member of the Grand Dames of Otsego Commandery No. 76, Knights Templar in Cooperstown.

A member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, Betty was also a 25-year member of Fly Creek Valley Grange No. 790 and served as a Cub Scout den mother for many years, in both Centerport and Richfield Springs.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Brian, of Fly Creek; and her three sons, Brian F. Carso Jr. and his wife, Kerry Dean Carso, of Albany and Fly Creek, Brad C. Carso of Fly Creek and Barrett S. Carso of Fly Creek.

She was predeceased by her mother, Ruth V. Walker, who died March 31, 2001.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas E. Pullyblank, officiating. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be conducted by members of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, O.E.S. as part of the funeral service at the church on Tuesday afternoon. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. today, when Betty's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, PO Box 128, Fly Creek, NY 13337 or the Always and Forever Memorial and Honor Program, American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John T. Mazzarella

HOLIDAY, Fla. — John Tracy Mazzarella entered the kingdom of heaven to be with his Lord on Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, with his wife and parents by his side, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

John was born in Sidney, on March 25, 1955, the son of Frank John and Rose Marie (Cutting) Mazzarella.

He married Tanuja "Hema" Singh in Linden, Guyana, South America, on Jan. 31, 1999.

John grew up in Sidney, attending Sidney Central School where he was an outstanding wrestler, graduating in the Class of 1973. He served his country in the U.S. Navy nuclear submarines from 1974 until his honorable discharge in 1978.

John was an accomplished bowler, his personal best being a 300 game and an 802 series on Nov. 11, 1993.

He was most recently employed by PCL Construction Co., Tampa, Fla., as a buyer.

John is survived by his wife, Tanuja Mazzarella, of Holiday, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tracy "T.J." and Laura Mazzarella of Conroe, Texas, and Dominick Mazzarella of Spring, Texas; two grandsons, Vincent Michael and Thomas Dominick Mazzarella of Conroe, Texas; his parents, Frank and Rose Mazzarella of Sidney; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph L. Mazzarella and Audrey Graham of Bainbridge, and Jeffrey A. and Lynne Mazzarella of Sidney; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary M. and Kenneth Deck of Unadilla; his goddaughter, Natalie Joy Gregory of Unadilla; his nieces and nephews, Brooke, April and Amber Mazzarella, Jennifer, Alyzza, Ethan and Jacob Mazzarella, Marina and Michael Mazzarella, Rosemary, Emily, Lydia, and Natalie Gregory. He is also survived by two great-nieces, several aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Vincent Michael Mazzarella in 1989, and his oldest brother, Frank "Gus" Mazzarella on Jan. 7, 2000.

A memorial service to celebrate John's life and the love he gave to all who knew him will be offered at the Sidney United Methodist Church at noon Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, with the Rev. David Masland officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name and mailed to the Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 4422 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey, FL 34652.

Margaret Constable

SIDNEY — Margaret S. Constable of 3 Union St., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, Nov. 8, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

She was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Reuben and Katherine Belknap Steigleman.

On Aug. 9, 1986, she married Robert V. Constable in Sidney. Robert predeceased her on Sept. 28, 2001.

Margaret was employed for several years at the Amphenol Corp., Sidney. She retired on Feb. 19, 1982.

She was a member of the Corp. R.H. Arrandale Post No. 7914 V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Women of the Moose Chapter 502, the Charles L. Jacobi Post No. 183 American Legion Auxiliary, and the I.A.M&A.W. Local 1529, all in Sidney.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Scott of Sidney, and Thomas Scott of North Hollywood, Calif.; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Roger Benedict of Walton, Roxanne and James Knight of Otego, Robin and Joe Gossoo of Sidney Center; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Nancy Constable of Bainbridge, and Terry and Cindy Constable of Sidney Center; stepsister and her husband, Bernice and Charles Gaydorus of Afton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A son, Richard Scott, predeceased his mother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

William J. Burke

MASONVILLE — William J. Burke, 52, of 21 Bundy Hollow Road, Masonville, passed away at his residence on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.

He was born Aug. 30, 1951, in Bronx, the son of William J. Burke and Therese Harr Burke.

He was a police officer for the New York City Transit Authority from Feb. 22, 1971, until retirement on March 15, 1991.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police, New York City, The Emerald Society, Delaware County Shields of New York, and Loyal Order of the Moose, Sons of the American Legion and the Masonville Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Burke and Danny Boecke, Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Tammy Cummings, Ft. Covington; mother, Therese Burke and Ken Shackelton, Sidney; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Danny, Courtney and Aaron Cummings and Kyla Boecke; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Sherry Burke, Ithaca; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances Marks, New Jersey, Kathleen and Richard Herban, New Jersey, and Dorothy and Robert Tribble, Virginia; one aunt, Dorothy Harr; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special companion, his dog Peanut.

He is predeceased by his father, William J. Burke, and a son, Ivan Frear.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Ralph Mewhorter

GILBERTSVILLE — Ralph Ernest Mewhorter, 59, of Gilbertsville, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, as a result of an auto accident.

He was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Oneonta, the son of Robert William and Mary Catherine (Brooks) Mewhorter.

He married Dawn Frewart at Mountain Lake Park, state of Maryland.

He had been employed by the Otsego County Highway Department, and had served as town of Butternuts highway superintendent. He had worked as a union laborer through the local laborers union, formerly of Oneonta. He had owned and operated the 3D Diner in Oneonta from 1969 to 1970. He most recently was employed by Otsego Ready-Mix of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn; his three children, Marie Elliott and husband, Robert K., of Lagrangeville, Jeffrey Mewhorter and wife, Julie, of Sidney, and Darryn Mewhorter and wife, Donna-Marie, of Garner, N.C.; his grandchildren, Brooke and Elisabeth Elliott. Ralph is also survived by a brother, Earl Mewhorter and wife, Linda, of Orange City, Fla.; four sisters, Marjorie Christensen of Phenix, Ala., Delores Dubois and husband, Marshall, of Phenix, Ala., Evelyn Chesley and husband, Gordon, of Orange City, Fla. and New Hampshire, and Mary Knapp and husband, Anson Knapp Jr., of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by a sister, Yvonne Richie, who died in 1998, two brothers, John Mewhorter Sr., who died in 2000, and Robert Mewhorter, who died in early childhood.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the charity of their choice in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Rosa E. Roe

HORSEHEADS — Rosa E. Roe, 84, of 29 Landau Dr., Horseheads, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Nov. 9. 2003, at home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Roe was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Julia Saade; a brother, Charles Saade.

Rosa is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Walter Roe, who she married on March 3, 1944; sons and daughters-in-law, Terrell and Eileen Roe of Orlando, Fla., and Kirt and Patricia Roe of Horseheads; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Emil Olson of Rome, Ga.; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Raymond and Dorothy Baldi of Walton, and Floyd Stoutenberg of Walton; grandchildren, Terrell (Ann) Roe of Albany, Chantal (Paul) Avila of Pasedena, Calif., Kirt Roe of Elmira, and Brandon and Christopher Roe of Horseheads; great-grandson, Luke Roe of Albany; and several nieces and nephews.

Rosa worked for numerous years at the Bendix Corp., where she assisted in the development of auto parts.

In her free time, Mrs. Roe enjoyed playing bingo and watching her grandchildren participate in sporting events, but most importantly the time she shared with her husband, Walter, and family.

Friends are invited to call at the Barrett Funeral Home, 1004 Lake St., Elmira, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Bath National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 E. Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830 in Rosa's memory. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Georgia E. Utter

EAST MEREDITH — Georgia Elizabeth (Betty) Utter, 78, of East Meredith and formerly of Morris, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born in the town of Kortright, on Nov. 2, 1925, the daughter of Edward and Alyce (Odell) Smith.

She married Carl Utter in Davenport, on June 13, 1947, a marriage of more than 56 years.

She had been employed by the Chase Hospital and later the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, retiring in 1980. She was a former member of the Davenport Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her husband, Carl, of East Meredith; her four sons, Paul Utter and wife, Chris, of Norwich, Phillip Utter and wife, Brenda, of Morris, Timothy Utter and wife, Jeanette, of Morris, and Daniel Utter of Norwich; a sister, June Wood of East Meredith; two brothers, Roy Smith and wife, Betty Mae, of Davenport, and Allan Smith and wife, Joan, of East Meredith; her grandchildren, Bruce and Jennifer Heston, Kyle, Joey, Justin, Megan, Dylan and Tiffany Utter; and three great-grandchildren, Dustin and Carly Utter and Tess Heston.

She was predeceased by a brother, Milton Smith.

There will be no calling hours and a memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice in her memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Karl W. Laubmeier

WESTFORD — Karl Winsor Laubmeier, 67, of town of Westford, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at his home in Westford.

He was born in the town of Morris, on Dec. 6, 1935, the son of George and Mathilda (Hollrotter) Laubmeier.

He was the proprietor of the Green Lantern Tavern in Laurens, prior to his retirement several years ago.

During his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseshoe pitching, caring for his pets and raising flowers.

He is survived by his sisters, Erna Barton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Stella Abenanty of Cobleskill; a brother, George Laubmeier and his wife, Chloe, of Morris; his nieces and nephews, Linda Kolnick, Nancy Barker, Mike and James Laubmeier and Christene Wood.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. At 2 p.m. a funeral service will be held with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the American Cancer Society in his memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
