Dorothy E. Hesse

OTEGO — Dorothy E. Hesse, 93, of Otego, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, while visiting with family in West Virginia.

She was born July 15, 1910, in Jeffersonville, the daughter of Franklin and Josephine (Dietricht) Neuberger.

She was married Aug. 21, 1937, to Edgar H. Hesse in Chenango Bridge.

She was a 1927 graduate of Union-Endicott High School and attended Syracuse University.

During World War II she worked at IBM in Endicott while her husband served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Europe.

She later worked as an inspector at Scintilla (Bendix Corp.) in Sidney.

She was a lifelong practicing Born Again Christian. For many years she was a member of the Unadilla Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a doll collector, and as such she owned and operated Thea's Doll Hospital with her husband for many years in the Otego and Oneonta area.

In her later years she was an honorary Grandma to many area children while she worked with the Oneonta YMCA's after school program at Valleyview School and with the Oneonta Job Corps' child care program.

When in her 80s, she helped out as an aide at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

She is survived by her son, Franklin J. (Buzz) Hesse and his wife, Jackie of Otego, with whom she had resided since 1999; by her son, Edgar H. Hesse Jr. and his wife, Dee of Culloden, W.Va., where she had been visiting at the time of her death; and by her niece, Elease Strauss of Endwell. Also surviving are five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

An informal memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at the home of Buzz and Jackie Hesse, 370 Main St., Otego. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Dorothy's life and her entry into our Lord's kingdom.

Frank J. Kruh

MARYLAND — Frank J. Kruh, 81, of Maryland, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta, with his children by his side.

He was born May 24, 1922, in Cass, W.Va., the son of the late Mike and Jennie (Stradjat) Kruh.

In 1953, he married Jean Ross. They had four children.

He worked in various phases of construction and retired after serving as Maryland Town Superintendent from 1977 to 1989. He was a member of the Otsego County Superintendents Association.

Frank was a lover of animals, especially his dog, Ebby.

Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Miller and John Sparaco of Maryland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Kathy Kruh of Texas, Jack Kruh and Pat Tripp of Maryland, and Steve and Andrea Kruh of Maryland; five grandchildren, Ryan Miller, Mark and his wife, Kitt Miller, Cassandra Tripp, Jessica Kruh and Adam Kruh. Also, several brothers and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Kruh; three sisters, Jennie K. McCarthy, Josephine Gotcher and Justina Zeravica.

There will be no calling hours. Private services in remembrance of his life will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Schenevus, at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Frank's memory may be made to the Schenevus/Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

Burton E. Guinup

MASONVILLE — Burton E. Guinup, 50, formerly of Masonville, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, in Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 3, 1952, in Bloomingdale, N.J., son of the late Burton D. and Lucy Brown Guinup.

He was employed before his illness at Accurate Forming, Hamburg, N.J.

Among his many pleasures in life, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandson.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula C. Guinup, Scranton; a son, Lance Cpl. Craig N. Guinup, USMC, Huntington Beach, Calif.; a grandson, Zackary Guinup; a brother, Foster Crum, Oak Ridge, N.J.; a sister, Shirley Cooper, Wantage, N.J.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and aunts.

A memorial service was held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Pompton Valley Christian Assembly, Butler, N.J.

A cremation memorial service will be held at a later date.

Albert J. Pisano

DAVENPORT — Albert J. Pisano passed away at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Cagle Pisano; his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Jim Ostrom of Sayville; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Florence Pisano of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews in the New York metropolitan area.

Albert came here with his wife in retirement (1995) to start a life of community volunteer work. He was the president of Charlotte Valley Senior Citizens for four years, president of the Oneonta Italian American Club for two years, a Board Member of Community Outreach to Children for five years, a member of the Davenport Holiday Fund for four years, a member of the Davenport United Methodist Church Administrative Council for two years, and was an active volunteer in Charlotte Valley Central School as a front desk greeter, remedial reading tutor, and occasional lecturer on the History of Wall Street Economics for the fifth grade.

He also taught an investment class for the night time Continuing Education Program at Charlotte Valley for two years and was co-founder and a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels, Davenport for five years, until one month before his death.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran in World War II and spent the majority of working years on Wall Street in various investment firms. He ended his long career at Gannett Suburban Newspapers in 1995, just before coming to Davenport.

A memorial service will be held in the Davenport United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon.

It is the wish of the family that memorial contributions be made to the Davenport Volunteer Fire Department for their strength and commitment during the time of Albert's illness.

Joshua Ryan Leven

LEESBURG, Va. — Joshua Ryan Lutz Leven, 20, of Leesburg, Va., died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, in Leesburg.

Born on Oct. 16, 1983, in Oneonta. Joshua graduated from Stonebridge High School in June 2002.

Most recently, he worked as an assistant chef at a restaurant in upstate New York.

He enjoyed playing baseball, and fishing. Joshua was devoted to his dog, Daisy, his constant and faithful companion.

He is survived by his parents, Brett Leven and Yvonne (Lutz) Leven, of Leesburg, Va. He is also survived by his sister, Lindsay Leven; and two brothers, Tyler Leven and Reese Leven, all of Leesburg; his paternal grandparents, Rick and Grace Leven of Palm Coast, Fla., and Donna Leven of Maryland; and his maternal grandparents, Richard Lutz of Stamford, and Sharon and Mike Oakley of Howard, Colo. Joshua is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his godparents.

Arrangements are being handled by Loudoun Funeral Chapel, Inc., 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, 20175, Leesburg, Va., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at the funeral home, with Rev. James Ward officiating. Interment will be held privately at a later date in New York.

Arrangements by Loudoun Funeral Chapels.

Willard F. Wright

FOREST DALE, Vt. — Willard Franklin Wright, 85, died Nov. 9, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 20, 1918, in Worcester, the son of Van and Leah (Wade) Wright.

He graduated from Worcester Central High School in 1935, and Albany Business College with a degree in accounting.

He married Martha Knott on Feb. 1, 1975, in Holyoke, Mass.

Mr. Wright worked at Bendix Aviation as an accountant for many years, and retired, in 1979, as assistant treasurer for Farm Credit Bank in Springfield, Mass. After his retirement, he continued tax work for Farm Credit Bank at the Williston associate office.

He was a member of the Springfield (Mass.) Area Radio Controllers, and enjoyed building and flying radio remote-controlled airplanes. He attended the Brandon Congregational Church. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and trapping, and playing the piano.

Survivors include his wife of Forest Dale; two daughters, Vanessa Aprilliano of Rutland, and Teresa Sylvia of Milford, Conn.; a sister, Marilyn Dufresne of Worcester; three brothers, George Wright of Queensbury, Milton Wright and Dick Wright, both of Worcester; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Faulkner) Wright in 1972; and a daughter, Jeanne Driscoll, in 2002.

The funeral service was held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Brandon Congregational Church with the Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Brandon Area Rescue Squad, PO Box 232, Brandon, VT. 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Ethelyn Washburn

DELHI — Ethelyn M. Washburn, 81, of Bell Hill, Delhi, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 18, 2003, at Geneva General Hospital.

The daughter of John and Mabel (Seeley) Reynolds, she was born March 20, 1922, in Downsville, spent her youth in Auburn where she graduated from Auburn Seminary N.Y.A., and married Leslie E. Washburn, Feb. 27, 1943, in Arena. He died March 2, 1990.

In earlier years, Ethelyn was a nurse's aid at the Delaware County Infirmary and, subsequently, provided care in her home for the mentally handicapped for 29 years, until her retirement. A longtime Delhi resident, she had been living with her daughter in Geneva since last May.

An active member of the Meredith Baptist Church, where she often provided flowers for Sunday services; the W.C.T.U.; Delhi Grange; Delaware County A.R.C.; and N.Y. State Family Caregivers Assn., Ethelyn enjoyed knitting, crocheting, will be remembered for her unique flower garden, and as a thoughtful neighbor and friend to many.

Surviving are three daughters, Anne (Harold) Cushing of Middletown, Joyce Washburn of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gail (John) Campbell of Geneva; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Pansy McKinnon of Andes; a brother, Marvin Reynolds of DeLancey; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Meredith Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Sonny Persad officiating, with burial following in the Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meredith Baptist Church, Meridale, NY 13806.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Jane A. Joy Rhody

ONEONTA — Jane A. Joy Rhody passed away at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

A High Mass of Resurrection was held at the Church of St. Mary in Manhasset.

Jane was born in Oneonta, the daughter of Carmen A. and Anna Marie Gioia (Joy).

She is survived by her sisters, Sister Florence Joy, R.S.M., Angeline M. Nielsen; a brother, Michael C. Joy and sister-in-law, Dawn Joy; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward B. Rhody; her parents, brothers, Anthony and Mel; and sister, Mary J. Packer.

A private burial will be at St. Mary's Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were by Fairchild Sons in Manhasset.

Maegan van Wagenen Mundi; Galadriel Mundi

SAN RAMON, Calif. — Maegan, 38 years old, and daughter, Galadriel, 3 years old, passed away at their home in San Ramon, Calif., on Nov. 16, 2003.

Maegan was born on May 30, 1965, and grew up in Lawyersville. She is the daughter of Carol and Frank Bell of Stamford, and Jared and Marilyn van Wagenen IV of Lawyersville.

She is survived by her parents; a brother, Jared and wife Laura van Wagenen V of Howes Cave; stepbrother, Keith and wife Claudia Bell of Harpersfield, and stepbrother, Jeff and wife Fran Bell of Hawaii. Maegan is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Galadriel was born on March 16, 2000, in San Francisco, Calif. She is survived by her father, Andrew Mundi of San Francisco; her paternal and maternal grandparents; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Nov. 24, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Schoharie Reformed Church on Main Street in Schoharie.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to charities of one's choice.
