John E. Stratton

CHENANGO FORKS — John E. Stratton, 61, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, with his family by his side.

John was the son of the late Edith and William Carey.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sheila Stratton; his children, Laurie Little and Bill Day, Andes, John II and Jodi Stratton, Johnson City, Tracy and Pat Stark, Baltimore, Md., and Susan Stratton, Farmingham, Mass.; grandchildren, Ryan and Beth Little, John Brandon Stratton, Bristin Millard, and Aidan Stark; father-in-law, Jack Dougherty. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers, Tom and Ken Stratton; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John graduated from Andes Central School and the State University of New York at Delhi, where he earned his degree in Architectural Technology.

He spent over 34 years working for A.L. Burke Inc. John was the chief estimator and draftsman, and took great pride in his work. He was responsible for the construction of many pre-engineered buildings in and around Broome County.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who had a great love of family, and most enjoyed being surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

John had a passion for hunting, especially deer hunting, which he and his son shared. John was a fine and dedicated gentleman, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He attended the North Fenton United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Port Dickinson, with the Rev. Douglas Sivers officiating. Burial will be in the North Fenton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Albert J. Pisano

DAVENPORT — Albert J. Pisano passed away at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Cagle Pisano; his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Jim Ostrom of Sayville; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Florence Pisano of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews in the New York metropolitan area.

Albert came here with his wife in retirement (1995) to start a life of community volunteer work. He was the president of Charlotte Valley Senior Citizens for four years, president of the Oneonta Italian American Club for two years, a Board Member of Community Outreach to Children for five years, a member of the Davenport Holiday Fund for four years, a member of the Davenport United Methodist Church Administrative Council for two years, and was an active volunteer in Charlotte Valley Central School as a front desk greeter, remedial reading tutor, and occasional lecturer on the History of Wall Street Economics for the fifth grade.

He also taught an investment class for the night time Continuing Education Program at Charlotte Valley for two years and was co-founder and a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels, Davenport for five years, until one month before his death.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran in World War II and spent the majority of working years on Wall Street in various investment firms. He ended his long career at Gannett Suburban Newspapers in 1995, just before coming to Davenport.

A memorial service will be held in the Davenport United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon.

It is the wish of the family that memorial contributions be made to the Davenport Volunteer Fire Department for their strength and commitment during the time of Albert's illness.

Marilynn L. Price

STAMFORD — Marilynn L. Price, of Stamford, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Marilynn was born on Oct. 1, 1951, in Stamford, the daughter of the late Robert E. and Ilene M. Gregory.

She was married to Robert Price on July 31, 1971, in Stamford.

A lifelong area resident, Marilynn was a hair dresser in Stamford for 34 years, having worked at The Bluebird Hair Salon, M'Ladies Hair by Marilynn, Deby's Beauty Shop and recently having opened her own shop again on Railroad Avenue, Marilynn's Hair Affair. While being a beautician, she had the opportunity to have many loyal and loving customers who will greatly miss her.

Marilynn enjoyed traveling with her husband, having made many close friends in the fire and rescue services from all over the world.

She loved being a homemaker and baking cookies with her adoring niece and nephew, Megan and Zachary Chichester.

Marilynn leaves behind her husband Robert "Bob" Price; her brother, Robert Gregory of Stamford; former sister-in-law, Doris Allison of Laurens; nephew, Michael Chichester and his wife, Linda, and their children, Megan and Zachary of Stamford; niece, Dawn Gregory and her children, Heather Sawyer, Matthew and Jesse Campbell of Laurens; nephew, Robbie Gregory of Stamford, and his daughter, Makayla Terese Miller of Cortland. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; along with many special friends and customers.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. in Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, with Father Anthony Ligato officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Donations may be made in Marilynn's name to the Stamford Fire Department, 111 Main St., Stamford, NY, 12167 or their choice of charities.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Charles J. Glenn

SIDNEY — Charles Joseph Glenn, 93, of Sidney passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Aug. 23, 1910, son of the late Joseph and Helena (Modjeska) Glenn in Dickson City, Pa., where he was raised.

Growing up, Charlie loved baseball and became a fan in 1920. His idol was Babe Ruth, who at that time was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. Following in the Babe's footsteps Charlie became a pitcher and made it to the minor leagues in 1934. In the spring of 1935, Charlie was invited to spring training with the Boston Braves. Babe Ruth at the end of his career, had just joined the Braves. Charlie was picked by the manager to make the first pitches to his idol. "This was the most exciting thing in my life."

Due to injuries Charlie had to leave professional baseball and moved to Unadilla to play semi-pro. The injuries again hindered his playing, so he gave up baseball.

Charlie married Janet Cassidy of Hancock and started a family. Charlie began working for the Bendix Corp. in Sidney in 1941.

He was the president of the IAM&AW Union for many years and retired after 35 years of service.

Charlie started to bowl competitively in 1941, for the Smalley's Theater team and for many years for the Mirabito Oilers. He was inducted into the Tri-County Bowling Hall of Fame in 1991. Charlie was an avid golfer and a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge. He and Janet were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney and were very active with the Pathfinder Village in Edmeston.

Charlie is survived by loving wife, Janet Glenn, Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Colette J. and Ronald Bukow, San Juan, Calif.; son, Charles Owen Glenn, Los Angeles, Calif.; granddaughter, Jillian Cassidy Glenn; two grandsons, Evan Chandler Glenn and Scott Bukow; and one great-grandson, Charlie Bukow.

Friends may call Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, the family will be in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Liberty Street in Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Doris J. Barclay

SALISBURY CENTER — Doris J. (Jones) Barclay, a lifelong resident of State Route 29A, the widow of Elmer A. Barclay, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Sunset Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville, where she had been a resident since Oct. 1.

She was born in Stewarts Landing (Fulton County), a daughter of Fred H. and Katie M. Wilkinson Jones.

She graduated from Stratford Central High School. In 1953, she began her career as the acting Post Master at Salisbury Center, and on April 16, 1954, she received her appointment as Post Master of the Salisbury Center Post Office by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a position that she held until she retired on May 31, 1989.

On July 19, 1942, she was united in marriage with Elmer A. Barclay in Salisbury Center. Mr. Barclay died on Feb. 29, 1948.

Mrs. Barclay was a member of St. Paul's Universalist Church of Little Falls, the Auskerada, Maquaes, Rock City Chapter No. 204 Order Of The Eastern Star, the Salisbury Historical Society, Town of Salisbury Planning Board, a Girl Scout Leader, and had served on the local girl scout board, and a member of the National League of Post Masters.

She is survived by a daughter, Catherine A. Barclay, Cooperstown; and her friend, Robert C. Hammond, Boonville; by a son, Paul A. Barclay, and his wife, Nancy Oakland, Maine; among nieces and nephews, Margaret Kuehnle and her husband, Charles, Salisbury Center; two brothers-in-law, John A. Barclay and his wife, Hazel, Verona, and Clayton Barclay and his wife, Doris Lady Lake, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Barclay, North Syracuse, and Lucy Durgee, New Hartford.

She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Grandinette, and by a niece, Janet Davis.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Frisbie House owned by the Salisbury Historical Society on State Route 29, at the intersection of State Route 29 A at Salisbury Center.

There are no calling hours.

A spring interment will be in Stratford Cemetery, town of Salisbury.

Memorial contributions may be made to Herkimer County Humane Society, or to the Town Of Salisbury Historical Society.

Arrangements are in care of the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St., Boonville.

Harry J. Holtje

HARTWICK — Harry J. Holtje Sr. of Fort Lee, N.J., and Hartwick, 98, died on Nov. 7, 2003, at Englewood Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was the beloved husband of Cora Mary Terry and Estelle Stachula Capparelli. He was the devoted father of Harry Jr., Corinne Pollak Curlis, Terry, Bruce and Ned. Harry had three stepchildren, Charlie, Molly and Frank. He had 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Natalie Cornetsky of Satalite Beach, Fla.

The family was in attendance at the Frank A. Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home, Fort Lee. Religious services were held at The Church of The Good Shephard, Fort Lee, which had presented him with their Saint Michael Award. Burial followed at the Madonna Cemetery, Fort Lee.

If so desired, memorials may be made to George Lautenschger Scholarship Fund of Fire Company No. 1, 146 Main St., Fort Lee, NJ 07024.

Harry was a member of Good Shephard Episcopal Church. He was a trustee of Englewood Hospital. He was honored by the Fort Lee Elks Club with a Distinguished Service Award. He was appointed to establish the Fort Lee Senior Citizens Club and was a member in good standing and a past president.

In 1989, the Fort Lee Chamber of Commerce chose him for Man of the Year. In 1992, he was appointed Honorary Fire Chief of the Fort Lee Fire Department. He was president and one of the founders of the Fort Lee Blood Bank. He was one of the main persons instrumental in initiating the original construction of the Fort Lee Library.

He was a member of the Drug Abuse Committee. In 1987, the state of New Jersey passed a resolution honoring Harry for his many years of Philanthropic Endeavors, Community, Services and Leadership. He sold the first pick for the construction of the George Washington Bridge.

He was a man of many remarkable achievements, and has also lived through some of history's most remarkable times.

Joseph Allegretto

HOBART — Joseph Allegretto, 49, of Hobart passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Sept. 6, 1954, the son of Nicholas M. and Dolores (Bourassa) Allegretto.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Father Anthony Ligato officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Merlin Crandall

ONEONTA — Merlin (Mickey) Crandall, 74, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a short illness.

He was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Oneonta, the son of Walter and Isabel (Niles) Crandall.

He married Jeannine Maille in Milford, on June 10, 1953. Mrs. Crandall died June 11, 1990.

He served with the U.S.A. during the Korean War.

Mickey was a machinist at Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 30 years, prior to retirement.

Mr. Crandall was a lifelong area resident and in his younger years was associated with his brother in the operation of Crandalls Service Station at the corner of Maple and Main Street in Oneonta.

He was a former member of the Oneonta Moose Lodge and the Oneonta Eagles Club.

Mr. Crandall is survived by one daughter, Merlina Crandall of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Shane and Sheena Crandall and Athena and Cody Clapper.

He was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters, Clifford, Walter, Bruce, Arthur, Helen, Beatrice and Marion.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, officiating. His final resting place will be in Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.
