Gladys Abramson

SCHENEVUS — Gladys D. Abramson, 79, formerly of 419 Moffett St., Watertown, died Nov. 16, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, after being taken ill at the home of her daughter.

She was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Schenevus, the daughter of Albert and Susan Ritchie Dubben.

She graduated from Schenevus schools and SUNY Oneonta, in elementary education. She taught school in Walton School District, until moving to Watertown where she taught in Cooper and Starbuck Elementary schools, retiring in 1984.

She married Irwin G. Abramson on Aug. 19, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, he died May 16, 2002.

She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Saunders, DeWitt; and a grandson, Jon Saunders, DeWitt; two brothers, Ralph Dubben, Gilbertsville, and Raymond Dubben, Schenevus; two sisters, Alice Thomson, Unadilla, and Caroline Whiteman, Schenevus; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral will be 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, at Schenevus Cemetery, Schenevus.

Donations may be given to American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Albert E. Messenger

ONEONTA — Albert E. Messenger, 87, passed away at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin, on Nov. 19, 2003.

He was born on May 21, 1916, in Brooklyn, the son of Albert J. and Olga (Carlson) Messenger.

He was predeceased by a sister, Olga (Messenger) McCartney.

Albert married Ethel Dorothy Anderson, Aug. 20, 1939, who predeceased him in 1993.

He served in the Army during World War II and was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Edward Messenger, who was killed in the Vietnam War in 1968.

He was a perfumer for Fritzsche Brothers Inc., New York, for 42 years. Albert lived in Woodhaven until 1952, when he and his family moved to Wantagh. He and his wife retired to Oneonta, in 1976.

He is survived by a son, Ronald A. Messenger and his wife, Pauline; granddaughter Tara Hill and her husband, Matt of New Jersey; a daughter Elaine Messenger Lull and her husband, John of Morris; granddaughters Jennifer Leahy and her husband, Tom of Scarborough, Elizabeth Child and her husband, Brad of Morris, Amanda Stamas and her husband, Josh of West Oneonta, and Melinda Lull of Morris; four great-grandsons, Ty and Ian Leahy and Robert and Benjamin Child.

He was a member of the Wantagh Baptist Church for many years before becoming a member of the First Baptist Church of Morris. He loved to spend time visiting with his family and friends, and enjoyed both bowling and baseball.

The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church, Morris, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dan Lambertson, pastor, officiating. The family will be in attendance at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Albert's memory can be made to the First Baptist Church of Morris, Morris, NY 13808.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Walter J. Davis

ROTTERDAM — Walter J. Davis, 73, of Guilderland Avenue, entered into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday at his residence.

Walter was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Stamford, the son of the late James W. and Margaret Davidson Davis. He was a graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Walter was a systems analyst for the New York State Department of Social Services for 33 years, and retired in 1990.

Mr. Davis was a member of Bellevue Reformed Church. He was very active in St. George's Lodge No. 6 of Free and Accepted Masons and was a past Master. He was a member of Sigma Bodies AASR Valley of Schenectady, Past Sovereign Prince, Past Secretary and current Trustee, member of Cyprus Shrine of Albany, President of the Cyprus Motor Patrol and Past President of the Schenectady Shrine Club. Walter was also a member of St. George's Chapter No. 157 Royal Arch Masons.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Bernice Chichester Davis, who died in August 1999, predeceased him.

One loving son, James Davis of Clifton Park; three loving daughters, Diana Davis of Milford, Mass., Beverly Carroll of Clifton Park, and Debbie Shaver of Schenectady, survives Walter. He leaves a special friend, Norma Drake; and three sisters, Helen Tomach, Betty Tierney and Marion Bishop. Seven grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral services to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Bellevue Reformed Church, 2000 Broadway, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. St. George's Lodge No. 6 will hold a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will take place in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.

Robert P. Craver

BAINBRIDGE — Robert P. Craver, 84, of Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Nov. 21, 2003, at his home.

He was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Coventry, the son of the late Ashley and Marjorie Smith Craver.

On May 30, 1940, he married Viola Taft in Bainbridge. She predeceased him on April 26, 2001.

Mr. Craver began his professional career with the Borden Co. in Bainbridge, at the age of 19, in 1939. He was a co-inventor of the world-famous Elmer Glue in 1947. Bob retired from the Borden Co. as general manager in 1986 after completing nearly 50 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II. He was a very proud and active member of the Bainbridge community. Mr. Craver was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and for many years served on its vestry, former member and a past president of the Bainbridge Rotary Club, former member and a past president of the Bainbridge-Guilford School Board of Education and a former member of the board of directors for the Chenango County Council of the Girl Scouts of America, Norwich. Bob was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert J. and Patricia Ann Craver of Liverpool and Philip B. and Elsie Craver of Bainbridge; two daughters and son-in-law, Christine Craver and her companion John Haddad of Sidney and Cynthia and Michael Johnson of Bainbridge; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Faye Craver of Riverside, Calif.; sister-in-law, Nora Craver of Bainbridge; seven grandchildren, Robert W. and Philip M. Craver, Cresta E., Danica H. and Damon T. Cajthaml and Danielle P. and Alexander Craver; and two great-grandsons, Jaden Cajthaml and Aidan Innocente. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also are surviving.

A brother, Kenneth A. Craver, predeceased him.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, from St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be follow in the St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Bainbridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Edward Duncan Jr.

SCHUYLER LAKE — Edward Duncan Jr., 75, of County Highway 22, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday night, Nov. 19, 2003, in Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.

Ed was born on June 20, 1928, in Davenport, son of the late Edward and Sarah Van Buren Duncan. A lifelong area resident he was educated in Schuyler Lake Richfield Springs schools.

On Dec. 20, 1951, he married the former Rosetta Mondore in Richfield Springs. Together they resided in Schuyler Lake since.

Anyone who knew Ed knew he was a hard worker and always kept himself busy. For many years he was employed by Shur-Katch in Richfield Springs along with farming and taking care of the Schuyler Lake Cemetery. The last five years of his working life were spent at the Richfield Springs Landfill, where he retired in 1982.

His leisure time was spent coloring, buying and selling things for the house-store, cooking, growing flowers, spending time with his family, listening to country and gospel music. Every year he looked forward to going to the Cobleskill Fair. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially liked to hunt and fish.

All that knew Ed will remember his good sense of humor, his caring manner and warm smile. He will be missed by many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 51 years, Rosetta; four sons, Eddie and his wife, Janet Duncan and William Duncan, all of Burlington Flats, and Earl and his wife, Laurie Duncan, and James and his wife, Tammy Duncan, all of West Winfield; three daughters and their husbands, Rosemary and William Oldick of Van Hornesville, Marie and Don Walsh of Richfield Springs and Betty and Russell Schermerhorn of Burlington Flats; two sisters, Elizabeth Sparks of Herkimer and Isabelle Garbera of Richfield Springs; three brothers, Frank Duncan of Schuyler Lake, Ray Duncan of Richfield Springs and Elwin Duncan of Hartwick; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins and his best friend of 19 years, Alex.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard, Herbert, Sylvan and Fred Duncan and a sister, Louise Duncan.

The family will be present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate.

Mr. Duncan will be laid to rest in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Maurice Marble

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Maurice Marble, 64, of South New Berlin, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1939, in Bainbridge, the son of the late Bertram and Olive (Whitney) Marble.

He enjoyed playing cards and games and watching good movies. He liked participating in arts and crafts activities. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. He enjoyed going out into the community for any type of outing.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Kermit and Kay Marble of Sidney; his nephews, Charles and Linda Marble and their children, Shannon and Shane, David Marble and his children, Jennifer, Matthew and Abigail, and Donald and Sandy Marble and son Jonathan; his uncle, the Rev. Andrew Whitney; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Philip Thorick, pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Nellie E. Davis

ONEONTA — Nellie E. Davis, 95, of Oneonta and formerly of New Berlin and Edmeston, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the Fox Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for several years.

She was born in Livingston Manor on Oct. 1, 1908, the daughter of John Townsend and Estella (Tuttle) Townsend.

She was married to Ernest Davis in July 1949. He died in November 1968.

She was a seamstress and homemaker, and had resided most of her adult life in the Edmeston area until moving to the Terrace Heights Apartments in New Berlin. Several years later, poor health caused her to become a resident of the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She had been a member of the Eastern Star and the United Methodist Church of Morris.

She is survived by a brother, John F. Townsend and wife, Grace, of Cedar Hills, Texas; her nephews, Gary Fisher and wife, Lois, of Morris, and Stephen McWilliams and wife, Elaine, of Morris; and her nieces, Joanne Crumb and husband, Steve, of Duncanville, Texas, and Ester Mayne and husband, Herb, of Burlington Flats.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Alice Davis; a brother, David S. Townsend; and by three sisters, Jennie Fisher Musson, Glennie Howard and Emily McWilliams.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin. Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the New Berlin Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

William W. Hansen

MASSAPEQUA — William W. Hansen of Massapequa, Long Island, and formerly of Queens Village, at the age of 66 lost to a heroic struggle with prostate cancer on Nov. 22, 2003.

He was the beloved husband of Lynn. The devoted father of William (Peggy), James (Lorraine), Jeanne and Kathleen. The cherished stepfather of Laura Lynn (Tom) Allicino, Shannon (Kevin) Fritz, and Tara Cotty. He was the doting Grandpa Donuts to Jamie, David, Tommy, Taylor, Ashley and Heather. And he was the loving brother of Charles, John and Marilyn.

Reposing at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Bethpage Funeral Home, 20 Hicksville Road (1 mile North of Southern State Parkway, Exit 29).

Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial, Maria Regina R.C. Church, Seaford, Tuesday, 10:45 a.m. Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island.

Visiting today from 2 to 4:30 and 7 to 9:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 839 Stewart Ave., Garden City, NY 11530.

Phyllis J. Halbert

SIDNEY — Phyllis J. Halbert, 70, of 1 Spruce St., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning, Nov. 23, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Sidney, the daughter of the late Charles H. and Irene VanValkenburg Lennon.

She first married Edward E. Jacobson on Aug. 25, 1950, in Sidney. He predeceased her on March 3, 1973. On June 28, 1974, she married Bernald "Bernie" Halbert in Sidney. He passed away Feb. 4, 1997.

Phyllis was employed by the Bendix Corp. of Sidney from 1954 until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and was a member of the church choir.

She is survived by special friends, Laura and Dan Bartz, and their sons, Ryan, Nathan and Justin of Sidney; three brothers-in-law and wives, Richard and Erma Halbert of Sidney, Gerald Halbert of Unadilla, and Lawrence and Helen Halbert of Sidney. Phyllis is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her two sisters, Carol and Martha predeceased Phyllis.

Funeral and committal services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of her church, officiating. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be made to the Sidney United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St., Sidney, NY 13838, the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main Street, Sidney, NY 13838 or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney.
