Alfred Algerio

ONEONTA — Alfred "Fritz" Algerio, 87, of Oneonta passed away at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003.

He was born Dec. 7, 1915, in Northport, Long Island, the son of Joseph and Frances Algerio.

He married Alvena Bateman on Nov. 14, 1946, in Selden. She predeceased him on April 21, 1991.

Alfred served his country during World War II achieving the rank of Tech. 5. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He was involved in the senior's activities at the Elm Park Senior Center where he was the recipient of the "Volunteer of the Year" award several years in a row. He loved playing cards.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Florence Grissino; along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. John Burns, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kathryn L. Woehrle

STAMFORD — Kathryn L. Woehrle of Stamford and formerly of Simpsonville, died Nov. 23, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Kathryn was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Flushing, to John J. and Mary A. Boden Lyons.

She was employed by the US Postal Service for over 20 years and was Post Master at several post offices during her career, retiring from Cambridge.

Kathryn was a member of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Davenport Center and continued her attendance at St. Mary's in Oneonta after St. Theresa's closed.

When her son Lawrence was killed in the Vietnam War, she became a member of the Gold Star Mothers and remained active in that group for many years. She was also a volunteer for Hospice, member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and a member of several ski clubs.

Kathryn loved to be active and her hobbies reflect that. She enjoyed golf, loved skiing and was a ski instructor at Scotch Valley, and loved to travel, many times to conventions and overseas for skiing opportunities. She had traveled to many parts of the US, and Italy, Austria, Canary Islands, Barbados and Hawaii were some of her favorite overseas travels.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Lynne Searles; five granddaughters, Laura Kreutzer, Michelle Anderson, Debra Ladue, Karyn Bouton and Jodi Williams; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph Lyons, John Lyons and Arthur Lyons; two sisters, Eileen Parker and Agnes Coleman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; son, Lawrence W. Breitnitz; brother, Thomas Lyons; and sister, Mary Porter.

Calling hours with the family will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta with the Rev. John Burns officiating.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Myrtle VanSchaick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Myrtle M. VanSchaick, 85, of 690 West German St., Herkimer, formerly of US Highway No. 20, Richfield Springs, entered into eternal rest on Monday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2003, in Saint Luke's Medical Center, New Hartford.

She was born on March 1, 1918, in Little Falls, daughter of the late Jacob and Adina Werner Miller.

A lifelong area resident, she was educated in both Warren and Richfield Springs schools.

On May 1, 1937, she married Ralph E. VanSchaick in the town of Warren. For 32 years, she and her husband owned and operated their dairy farm on Brighton Road in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1979. Mr. VanSchaick passed away on June 6, 1982.

Myrtle had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Christian life. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are two sons and their wives, Ralph Jr. and Barbara VanSchaick of Charlotte, N.C., and Jacob "Jack" and Linda VanSchaick of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Peggy Ann, and her husband, Edward Egan of Kirkwood; two brothers and their wives, Warner and Ida Miller of Richfield Springs, and Paul and Evelyn Miller of Sable Forks; one sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Louis Chapman of Hastings; a sister-in-law, Janice Miller of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren, Barbara Bodner of Lisle, Steven and his wife, Tracy Egan, of Sherrill, Edwin Egan III of Binghamton, Barbie VanSchaick, Susan Egan, Leslie VanSchaick, all of Charlotte, N.C.; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband of 45 years, Ralph, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Jacob, John, Edward and most recently William Miller; two sisters, Leslie Stone and Adina Gill.

Funeral service will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until noon.

Mrs. VanSchaick will be laid to rest in the Unadilla Forks Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or the church of your choice.

Henrietta Eden

TREADWELL — A service to celebrate the life of Henrietta Eden will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. in the Treadwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Michael J. Schmidt

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Michael John Schmidt, 49 years old, died unexpectedly at his home in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Nov. 16, 2003.

Michael was born Aug. 24, 1954, in Oneonta, to John Sebastian Schmidt Jr. and Dorothy Mae (Whispell) Schmidt.

Michael attended Oneonta and Unatego schools, and was an active member of the Salvation Army Church.

He joined the US Navy in 1972. Upon discharge from the Navy, Michael, following his adventurous spirit, and love for hiking, set out to see and explore the United States. Among his adventures was exploring uncharted caves for various parks across the country. He settled in Tucson, Ariz., and attended the University of Arizona for two years while working as a chef in a local restaurant.

Michael moved to Flagstaff, where he met and married Sue Nell Sneezer on July 13, 1996, and remained a resident there for the past 18 years.

Michael loved cooking, and aspired to someday becoming a gourmet chef. Among his other loves were playing his guitar, listening to country music, and above all, hiking and exploring with his two children, Michaela, 8 years old, and Joshua, 5 years old.

It was very important to Michael that his children learn to love, respect, and appreciate nature and family. He was his happiest when playing, teaching, and spending time with his children. His gentle, playful, and teasing ways will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Sue; son, Joshua Michael Schmidt; his daughter, Michaela June Schmidt; his parents, John and Dorothy Schmidt Jr. of Wells Bridge; his sisters, Harriet O'Kelly and Alice Fuzfa of Oneonta, Carolyn and Jack Quackenbush of Liverpool, Majors Eunice and David Champlin of Ohio; three half brothers; one half sister; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents; one half brother, David Graham; an uncle; and several cousins.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held at the Salvation Army Church in Oneonta at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.

Jon Alan Weishar

GRAND GORGE — Jon Alan Weishar, 36, born April 3, 1967, beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away suddenly, Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003.

Born in Syracuse at St. Joseph's, he lived the majority of his life in the Jefferson and Stamford areas, most recently residing in Grand Gorge.

After his graduation in 1986, from Jefferson Central School, Jon worked at Catskill Craftsmen in Stamford, and after a setback with cancer was accepted in the Army in 1992. While proudly serving in the Army, he joined the Special Forces. He served both in Kosovo as a paratrooper and Bosnia as a UN representative doing reconnaissance.

He enjoyed the many opportunities to travel in the Army and his two favorite places were Germany, where he fulfilled a dream of driving on the autobahn, and Italy. He achieved the rank of Sergeant before he decided to try civilian life once again after 10 years of service and he returned home to be near his family.

Family was the most important part of his life and even while in the Army, he returned home every time on leave. Jon would stop at his parents' home in Stamford every day for coffee after his shift at Mallinckrodt in Hobart, where he had been employed for seven months.

Jon loved fishing and NASCAR, his "driver" was Mark Martin, but he was especially a baseball fan rooting for his much beloved Yankees. He would go to his brothers' or parents' homes to watch their games.

Jon is survived by his parents, Douglas and Kathryn Weishar of Stamford; his brothers, Jason of Honesdale, Pa., Joseph and fiancee, Brandi Godwin of Hobart, and James and his fiancee, Brea Ramlow of Middletown; sisters, Sarah of Hobart, and Amy Callagy and husband, Kevin of Stamford; maternal grandmother, Jean Klodzen of Syracuse; and paternal grandmother, Lillian Weishar of Indianapolis, Ind.; nieces Hailey and Shaylyn; and nephews, Jared, Casey, Sean, Michael and Aighdan. His godmother and aunt, Joanne Klodzen of Washington, D.C.; as well as many other special aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jon also had a very special cat, Russell, whom he walked every day on a leash and spoiled terribly.

The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the ASPCA or local animal shelter.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Mary Lou Spence

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Mary Lou Spence, born Feb. 2, 1928, in Oneonta, died on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003.

Mary Lou graduated from Oneonta High School in 1946, where she enjoyed being a Varsity cheerleader. She then went onto Boston University, Sergeant College and earned a degree in physical therapy. While at BU, she was a proud member of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

Upon graduation, she was employed at Fox Hospital and shortly thereafter met and married Arnie Spence.

Mary Lou was also recruited to establish physical therapy departments at Bassett and Walton hospitals.

Mary Lou was always her children's best cheerleader and known as the "Oneonta soccer mom" in the early 1970s. In 1973, the Spence family moved from upstate New York to Tucson, Ariz., where they resided in Oro Valley. Arnie and Mary Lou moved to Phoenix in 1998 to be closer to their children.

An avid sportswoman, Mary Lou enjoyed golf. She and Arnie were members at Cooperstown Country Club in New York, and Oro Valley Country Club in Tucson. As an amateur golfer, Mary Lou won many golf tournaments.

She is survived by her four children, Cindy Campbell, Dwight Spence and Susan Cons of Phoenix, and Scott Spence of Minneapolis, Minn. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Jane Thompson of Arlington, Va., and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in Phoenix at noon on Sunday, Nov. 16, at Christ's Community Church, 4530 W. Thunderbird.

Frances Eckerson

ONEONTA — Frances Eckerson, 88, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 3, 1915, in Kortright the daughter of Frank and Rose (Swiderski) Dorosky.

She married Gerald Eckerson on May 30, 1953, at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. He predeceased her in October of 1998.

Frances worked as a waitress at Bresee's Health Bar for 34 years. She was an avid gardener, spending many hours tending to her flowers and vegetables. Frances was also an active member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by her sisters Pauline Fowlston and Grace Ole, both of Oneonta; her nephew Ronald Shaw, of Oneonta, and her very special niece, whom she treated like her daughter, Bonnie Shaw of Oneonta; a nephew Todd Fowlston, of Oneonta, and a niece Beth VanDeusen of Oneonta; also, two very special care providers at A.O. Fox Hospital, Mary Tuthill and Donette Loitsch.

There will be no public calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 29, at noon at St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Frances.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Lewis E. Miller

HARTWICK — Lewis E. Miller, 61, of Hartwick, died following a brief battle with cancer on Wednesday morning, Nov. 26, 2003, at his home.

Lew was born on Dec. 25, 1941, in Valley Stream on Long Island, a son of Lewis and Mildred (Watson) Miller.

Raised on Long Island by Ernest and Anna David, he was a graduate of Huntington High School. On Oct. 22, 1960, he married Barbara Kunz. For many years he and his brother, Ed, owned and operated Miller Brothers, a landscaping business on Long Island. Twelve years ago, Lew and Barbara moved to Hartwick and, for the past 11 years, he has been employed as a groundskeeper for the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.

Lew is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara, of Hartwick; one daughter, Susan Jones and her husband, Alan, of Chenango Forks, and their children, Megan and Erik; one son, David Miller and his wife, Pamela, of Jackson, N.J., and their children, Mariah and Chapin Miller and Nicholas Brusca; two brothers, Edward Miller and his wife, Rose, of Westbury, Long Island, and George Miller and his wife, Susan, of St. James, Long Island; and three nephews.

Lew and Barbara were predeceased by their infant daughter, Melinda, who died in 1970.

The family will receive friends at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
