Thelma Hammond

WALTON — Thelma Marie Hammond of Walton passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at her home after a brief illness. She was 80.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1923, in Hamden, the daughter of the late Theodore and Elizabeth Gray Eckert. On Sept. 10, 1954, she married William I. Hammond in Las Vegas, Nev. He predeceased her on Dec. 7, 1995.

Mrs. Hammond was a lifelong area resident and worked for many years at Delaware Valley Hospital first as a ward clerk and then as a secretary in the hospital's medical office facility, retiring in the late 1980s.

She was very active in the Walton community, participating as a Girl Scout leader and served as the first female member of the Walton Emergency Squad.

After retirement, she (and husband Bill, until his death) traveled to Florida during the winter months enjoying the warm weather and many wonderful friends.

Mrs. Hammond was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister and grandmother. She was deeply loved by those whose lives she touched and will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Dale and wife Nonie of Troy, Dennis and wife Linda of Summit, N.J., Mickey of Thomasville, Ga., and Patti of Otego. She also leaves five grandchildren, Lisa, Kristina, Justin, Owen and Matthew and great- grandson Sean. Also surviving are two brothers, Leonard and Larry Eckert and two sisters, Sandra Johnson and Arlen Utter, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mrs. Hammond was also surrounded by many devoted and caring friends.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jane Utter.

Her life will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Walton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Walton United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton, NY 13856.

Arrangements are by Lyon-Bros.-Way Inc., Walton.

Leo Karl Rous

OTEGO — Leo Karl Rous of Otego died Nov. 29, 2003, in Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born in Otego on May 13, 1924, to Sylvester E. and Mary H. Hopkins Rouse.

He lived his entire life in the house that his family moved into when he was 5 years old.

Leo entered the Army on Feb. 24, 1943, and was with the Air Corps serving in Africa during World War II.

He married Agnes A. Sperry in Gilbertsville on Nov. 3, 1951.

Leo worked for Bendix Corp. as a wire harness maker and retired July 6, 1986, after 35 years with the company. After retirement he worked with his friend Maynard Sampson in his sawmill for six years.

Leo was a member of IAM union Local No. 1529 of Sidney, founding member and past president of Three Rivers Coon Club, the American Legion of Laurens and former member of the Elks Club.

Leo enjoyed golfing, auto racing and all sports. He loved coon hunting and raising coon dogs with his wife.

Leo is survived by his wife, Agnes A. Rous; daughters, Deanna and husband, Richard, Sperano of West Fulton, and Carol Rous and special friend, Dave Fisher, of Sidney Center; sons, Andrew and wife, Valerie, Rous of Otego, and Tracy and special friend, Shelley Elwell, of Otego; grandchildren, Jason, Christopher and Jessica Sperano, Marshall and Laura Rous, Tyler, Michael, Kyle and Karaline Rous; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Merle Jean Rous of Sanford, Fla.

He was predeceased by his parents; and five brothers, Charles, Harry, Lester and Curt Ackley and Brewster Rous.

Calling hours with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Viola Y. Gilmore

UNADILLA — Viola Y. Gilmore, 89, of Unadilla passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in the town of Guilford.

She was born Oct. 15, 1914, in North Norwich, the daughter of the late Perry B. and Ina (Youngs) Youngs.

She was a graduate of Unadilla Central School and has been a resident of Unadilla for 80 years.

Viola was a retired employee of Bendix Corp. of Sidney, and at one time was employed at Tieco-Unadilla Corp. of Unadilla.

She was a member of the Unadilla Senior Citizens, the Joyce Bell Post No. 578 American Legion Auxiliary of Unadilla and Unahanna Rebekah Lodge No. 480 of Unadilla.

Viola is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lori Gilmore of Guilford; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Betty Youngs of Unadilla and Robert and Barbara Youngs of Zephyrhills, Fla.; her sisters, Erma Crawford of Unadilla and Betty Berge of Johnson City. Also survived by two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla. (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

It is requested that memorial contributions be made to the Unadilla Fire Department or Unadilla Emergency Squad, 16 Clifton St., Unadilla, NY 13849 in memory of Viola Y. Gilmore.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Patrick Hickey

HARPERSFIELD — Patrick Hickey, 27, of Harpersfield died suddenly Nov. 28, 2003.

He was born May 20, 1976, the son of Joan and Donald Hickey.

His parents of Harpersfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Beata Hickey of Queens; and a niece, Samantha; and nephew, Brendon, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins survive him.

Patrick looked forward to spending time with his family and especially enjoyed activities with his niece and nephew. He also enjoyed time with his faithful friend, Max, a chocolate Lab, who enjoyed accompanying him fishing.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Father Anthony Ligato officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Terri L. Stevens

MORRIS — Terri L. Stevens, 49, of Morris passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born March 23, 1954, daughter of Herbert and Esther (Quick) Byam in Oneonta.

Terri is survived by her mother, Esther Byam, Johnson City, Tenn.; her husband, Gary Stevens, Morris; two sons, Bret Stevens, Morris, and Bradley Stevens, Norfolk, Va.; two sisters and two brothers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Terri is predeceased by her father; one sister; and two brothers.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Aileen Linsalata

ONEONTA — Aileen Linsalata, 72, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 4, 1931, in the Bronx, the daughter of the late Hugh and Aileen May (Glamann) Thornton.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth Linsalata of Oneonta; one daughter, Patricia Polchowne of California; four grandchildren; and one brother, Hugh Thornton of Whitesboro.

Calling hours will be from noon to the funeral service time at 2 p.m. today at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Creek Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Edith Archibald

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md. — Edith Archibald, 74, most recently of Linthicum Heights, Md., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Susan and her son-in-law, John Stagg.

She was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Barnsley, England, the daughter of Ernest and Hanna Webb.

She married Leonard Archibald on March 25, 1952, in Lincoln, England. Mr. Archibald predeceased her on Nov. 30, 1990.

While living in England, Edith served her country in the Royal Air Force. She worked at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department for 15 years.

She enjoyed vacationing and shopping but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Stagg and her husband, John of Linthicum Heights, Md., and Janet Heller of Bainbridge and her fiance, Joseph Glover of Oxford; one son, Steven Archibald of Delhi; seven grandchildren, Jason Lent, Barbara Lent, Gregory Stagg, Christine Stagg, Thomas Archibald, Michael Archibald and Stephanie Archibald; two great-grandsons, Daren Lent and Leonard James Larson III; also Kevin, Jennifer and Daniel Glover; her niece, Karen Paige and her husband, Peter of England; as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Betty and Lillian predeceased Edith.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring in the Bovina Center Cemetery, Bovina.

Calling hours will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in the Bookhout Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, NY 13417.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Clinton E. Tucker

HOBART — Clinton E. Tucker Sr., 69, of Hobart, and formerly of Unadilla, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at the Samuel S. Stratton V.A. Medical Center in Albany.

He was born May 27, 1934, in South Gilboa, the son of the late Thomas and Laura (Towsley) Tucker.

He was married to Irene McDonald Codington in 1960, who passed away Jan. 16, 2000. On Nov. 10, 2001, he was married to Margaret Wranovics Evans.

Clinton served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1960. He was employed as a truck driver for Montgomery Ward for many years, and before retiring was a school bus driver and trainer for the Ichabod Crane School in Kinderhook.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Tucker, of Hobart; a son, Clinton E. Tucker Jr.; stepsons, Rex Codington of Amsterdam, Thomas Codington, Kenneth and Kevin Grant of Hobart, and Master Sgt. Keith Grant of Miramar, Calif.; his daughter, Laurie Rodriquez of Gilbert, Ariz.; stepdaughters, Debra Dixon of Spokane, Wash., Connie Lutz of Albany; his sister, Marie Ericson of Rotterdam Junction; and half sisters, Priscilla Oakley and Nancy Barnes of Schenectady, and Joyce Orlowski of Stamford; a half brother, Clinton Stone Jr. of Boonville. Also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother and sister, Donald Shields and Elizabeth Oakley.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

A service to celebrate the life of Clinton E. Tucker Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Elliott Oakes, pastor of the Prattsville United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the charity of one's choice in memory of Clinton E. Tucker Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Alton C. Bryden

MARYLAND — Alton C. Bryden, 74, of Maryland passed away at home on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.

He was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Norwich, the son of Alton and Ruth Mae Bryden.

He married Catherine L. Pezzulo on Feb. 12, 1955, in Chautauqua. She predeceased him on Nov. 3, 1997.

Alton served his country in both the United States Army and the US Navy. He was a "Jack of all Trades." He was proud to have been a State Trooper and enjoyed driving trucks.

He was a member of the American Legion and the 6th Ward Athletic Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed boating and traveling.

Above all he was a loving and loved father and grandfather.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Anna Marie and Jack Snyder, Mary and Chris McIsaac, Linda and Andy Cella, and Alton Michael Bryden; his grandchildren, Kerry Snyder, Lindsay, Erin and Christopher "Spike" McIsaac, Sara and Dawn Bryden, Katie, Andrea, and Nicholas "Buckshot" Cella; and his many relatives in Glens Falls. He is also survived by his dear friend, John O'Kelly.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
