Tiny H. Haight

DELANCEY — Tiny Harriet Haight, 65, died with her family by her side Sunday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2003, at her daughter's residence after a prolonged battle with cancer.

She was born May 1, 1938, in Cooperstown, daughter of Scott and Frances Colburn.

Tiny lived in DeLancey for many years and was employed by Don Bishop.

She was a member of the Hamden Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and her real love was sharing the good news of God's Kingdom with whomever she met. In addition, she was known by many for her love of life and her effervescent personality.

She is survived by two sisters, Eva Murdock and Marion Harrington; three brothers, Charles and Carl Colburn and Richard Gorton; her four children, Dora Chambers, her husband William, and their sons, Ian and Cody, Kendall Haight, Karen Roney, her husband Theodore, and their daughters, Terah Patrocinio, her husband Samuel and Dana Roney, and David Haight; and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Tiny, there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the Hamden Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Jean E. Kusko

ONEONTA — Jean E. (Hale) Kusko, 75, of Oneonta passed away at the Metrohealth Skilled Nursing Center in Highland Hills, Ohio, on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.

She was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Oneonta, the daughter of Norman B. and Lilia (Butts) Hale.

She married Andrew Kusko in Oneonta, December 1956.

She worked as a registered nurse in the Oneonta area for many years. She was a member of the Oneonta Garden Club, and a local Bridge Club. She loved gardening, cooking and traveling. Most of all she loved spending her time with her family and her children.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Kusko; two daughters, Marta and husband Frank Hayes, and their children, John and Kelly of Medford, Mass., and Tanya Adamovich and husband Barry Koskie, Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Andrew H. Kusko of Ilion and his daughter, Abigal and Matthew Kusko of Oneonta; her brother, Norman B. Hale Jr. of Ilion; and her nephew, Jeffery Hale.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.

Friends may call Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John A. Meinking

ONEONTA — John A. Meinking, 94, of Oneonta passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, after a lengthy illness at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

John was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Spaden, Germany, the son of Dietrich and Meta (Buck) Meinking.

He married Anne Boening on May 13, 1933, in New York City. Mrs. Meinking died on Dec. 8, 1995.

In his earlier years, Mr. Meinking was employed at West Nesbitt Feed Co., for 25 years and the Victory Markets for 17 years and most recently at Bresee's Department Store for 17 years, prior to his retirement in 1996.

He was a 60 year area resident. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, where he was active as an usher. He enjoyed his work, family and many friends.

Mr. Meinking is survived by one son, Herbert and his wife, Fran Meinking of Clay; one daughter, Meta and her husband, Robert Currie of Maryland; two granddaughters, Laurie and her husband, Jay Schroeder and Sharie and her husband, Robert Splendorio; two grandsons, Steven Currie and his fiancee, Lori and Jeffrey Currie; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anni Heitel of Port Richey, Fla., Meta Bock of Germantown, and Martha Ladimer of Whiting, N.J.; two brothers-in-law, Hans Boening of Otego, and Hermann Boening of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to funeral services at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Ellen Porter

ONEONTA — Ellen Mae Smith Hoffman Porter, 95, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Born in Oneonta on April 5, 1908, Ellen was the only child of Earl Arthur Smith and Ella Carr Smith.

Ellen graduated from Oneonta High School in 1926 and continued her education at the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City.

Ellen eloped with her high school sweetheart, Wesley Seymour Hoffman, on Sept. 28, 1930. She and Wesley worked together for over 30 years as the proprietors of Hoffman Dry Cleaning in Oneonta. After Wesley's death in 1972, Ellen continued to operate the business until her retirement in 1975.

Ellen and Wesley had two children, Ann Elizabeth Hoffman Paradis-Maddalone and Earle William "Butch" Hoffman. Butch predeceased Ellen in 1992.

Ellen was an active member of the Republican Business Women's Club and volunteered for over 20 years in the gift shop at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Ellen was also married to Ralph Porter on Jan. 8, 1978. Ralph predeceased her in 1985.

Ellen was blessed with a long, happy and healthy life. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends and led an active social life. There was nothing she enjoyed more than entertaining friends and family.

Ellen is survived by her daughter, Ann Paradis-Maddalone of Oneonta; granddaughter, Kimberly Paradis Coryat and her husband, John of Olive Branch, Miss.; grandson, John Paradis of Oneonta; granddaughters, Shannon and Jacquelyn Hoffman of Albany; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ellen's family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta. A memorial service celebrating Ellen's life will be held at 11 a.m.

A private burial at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta will be scheduled at a future date.

Doris Gott

VERNON, Conn. — Doris Gott, 87, of Vernon, Conn., and formerly of Harpursville and Unadilla, went quietly home with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at the Rockville General Hospital, Rockville, Conn.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1916, in Harpursville, and was the daughter of Frank and Ines (Johnston) Bates.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Sydney W. Gott on Feb. 19, 2003.

She is survived by her five children, Shelda and Richard G. Cobb, Limaville, Ohio, Sally and Ferdinand F. Schambach, Sommersville, Conn., Sydney F. and Cheryl Gott, Mooresville, N.C., Sharla and Ronald L. Tuttle, Coventry, Conn., and Sela and Steve R. Saunders, Stafford Springs, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren from all over the USA that she loved dearly; two sisters and brother-in-law, Gracia Grover, Sidney, and Lorena and Wesley Moore, Palmetto, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Thomas (May) Denton, Roswell, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Bolton, Ohio, Methodist Church and a former member of the Harpursville United Methodist Church and Unadilla United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home, 69-71 Maple St., Harpursville, on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sandra L. Whelan, pastor of Harpursville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pratt Cemetery, Harpursville.

The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions in memory of Doris may be made to Alzheimer's Association So. Tier Chapter, 1406 Monroe St., Endicott, NY 13760.

Ada W. Tallman

DECATUR — Ada W. Tallman, 82, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born April 14, 1921, in Yellow Jacket, Colo., the daughter of Walter and Elma (Tewell) Weinmann. Her family moved to New Berlin in 1930, where she graduated from New Berlin Central School in 1939.

Ada married Raymond L. Tallman on April 25, 1942, in Edmeston. She has been a resident of Worcester since 1959, after her husband's retirement from the US Army. She and her family lived in 12 states and 14 Army Posts, including three years in Tokyo, Japan, and three years in the Panama Canal Zone.

Ada was a motor vehicle clerk for Otsego County. She worked in the Oneonta office from 1960 to 1983.

She was a member of the Worcester American Legion Post 1584 Auxiliary since 1960, where she held most offices; the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 138, Schenevus, since 1961, serving as Worthy Matron in 1980, 1986 and 1987, also District Deputy Grand Matron, Otsego Schoharie District in 1988; a life and charter member of the Schenevus VFW Post 592 Auxiliary, and a member of the Board of Elections in Decatur for a number of years.

She loved her family, gardening, bird watching, sewing of all sorts, knitting, crocheting and quilting.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond L. Tallman Sr., of Decatur; her children, Elizabeth T. DeMartino of Marietta, Ga., Barbara J. Tallman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Raymond L. Jr. and Linda Tallman of Richmondville; grandchildren, Robert D. DeMartino, Sean R. and Jennifer DeMartino, Todd A. DeMartino, Jennifer A. Geerken and Rebecca L. Tallman; great-grandchildren, Connor and Mason DeMartino; two sisters, Eldora Gregory and Lillian Holl, both of New Berlin; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The American Legion Auxiliary service will start at 8 p.m. followed by the Order of the Eastern Star Service. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 8, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made to the Worcester Cub Scouts, Pack 19, care of Janette Gardner, 1095 Smith Road, Worcester, NY 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Rae E. Spencer

OXFORD — Rae Emerson "Smokey" Spencer, 80, of Oxford went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Valley View Manor, where he resided for the last year. His "last diner."

He was born on July 17, 1923, in Oxford, the son of the late Ray Parker Spencer and Susie Florence Alta Herrick Spencer.

His brother, LeRoy DeBruce Spencer, and his sister-in-law, Elma Bush Spencer predeceased him.

Smokey attended Oxford Academy and Central School. At the age of 17 he taught himself to drive tractor-trailer. For over 50 years he traveled the country, having been employed by Greystone of Utica and Gerald Bickford & Sons of Coventry.

He was an avid pool player. His other pastimes included putting jig saw puzzles together, playing dominoes and assembling model vehicles. He gave many of the vehicles away.

One of his greatest joys was "chewing the fat" at the many restaurants, both locally and those far distant. He was well-known by the waitresses and restaurant owners. In Oxford his daily routine, in his retirement, was greeting those customers who entered Mr. Chubb's, Hoppie's and Nice N' Easy.

He took great joy in running errands for people and truly loved driving his family members around, often stopping for a bite to eat.

Another pastime was writing poetry, one such speaks of his very nature. "Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears."

He is survived by his niece and her husband, Audrey and Harold Johnson; his nephew, Daniel K. Spencer; and his grand nephews and nieces, Gregory Johnson, Erik Johnson, Kelli Spencer, Kurt Spencer, Mary and Chris Rothwell, Dustin, Dyrick and Dyllan, Martin and Carroll Johnson, Matthew and Victoria Johnson, Kylie, Joy and Tony Huffaker, Byron, Miriam and Ian, and Wendy and Charles Wright. Several cousins also survive.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, with the Rev. Susan Polizzi, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Norwich and the Rev. Kenneth Simpson, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Chenango County Habitat for Humanity.

Dorothy Nolan

SAG HARBOR — Dorothy Nolan, 83, passed away Nov. 30, 2003, at Folts Home, Herkimer, after a long bout with Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Theodore and Theresa (Schacner) Beckmann.

On Feb. 20, 1943, she married Thomas G. Nolan in Glendale, he survives.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the Town of Southampton Highway Department. She was a member of Columbiettes and St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Thomas G. Nolan, of Herkimer, include a daughter, Kathy Walsh and son-in-law John Walsh of Canajoharie; grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Thomas Smith, Matthew Smith and Joy Smith, and Shawn Walsh; and two great-granddaughters.

A memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. in St. James Church, Fort Plain, with Father Kenneth Swain officiating.

Contributions in Mrs. Nolan's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Harold T. Parker

WORCESTER — Harold Thomas "Butch" Parker, 53, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in Reddick, Fla.

He was born Jan. 22, 1950, in Cobleskill. He attended Worcester Central School. Butch was a United States Navy Vietnam veteran. He served aboard the USS ESSEX and also the Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1968 to 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Parker; parents, Roy and Edwina Parker of Decatur; son, Roy Allen and wife, Jill Parker of Jacksonville, Fla., and their sons, Jacob and Thomas; stepson, Shane and wife, Amy Martin of Bradenton, Fla., and their children, Shana and Josh; brother, David Roy and wife, Kay Parker of Decatur, and their daughter, Sara; sister, Julia and husband, Keith Althiser of Richmondville, and their children, Katie and Stefan; uncle, Allen Parker of Decatur; aunt, Chloe and uncle, George VanValen of Trumansburg; aunt, Mary Ann Ehrmann of Obernburg; and many cousins.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the East Worcester Fire Department, PO Box 781, East Worcester, NY 12064 or the charity of one's choice.
