Lewis M. Eldred
LIVERPOOL — Lewis Mears Eldred, 67, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1936, in North Adams, Mass. He and his family have made their home in Liverpool, since 1969.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sally Ridgeway Eldred, of Liverpool; a son, Evan D. Eldred of Liverpool; a daughter, Dr. Ann K. Eldred and her husband, Dr. Robert Johnson of Cooperstown, both physicians at Bassett Hospital; a granddaughter, Emma E. E. Johnson of Cooperstown; his mother, Margaret Green of Syracuse; one sister, Sarah Bratspis; and three nephews, Stephen, Jeffrey and David Bratspis of Albany. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Emma Ridgeway of Middlefield; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews on his wife's side.
Lew graduated in 1955 from Mount Hermon, Northfield, Mass., and in 1959 from Colgate University, Hamilton.
He was the senior commodity manager for the Transicold Division of the Carrier Corp., and traveled extensively in Europe and Asia for the company.
He was a member of Liverpool First United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at noon. The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
He was a charter member of the Liverpool Community Chorus and had been a member of the Chancel Choir at the Liverpool First United Methodist Church.
The family has requested no flowers. Contributions may be made in the name of Lewis Eldred to the New York State Historical Association, PO Box 800, Lake Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or the Memorial Fund at the Liverpool First United Methodist Church, 606 Oswego St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
Marcella E. Butler
ROCHESTER — Marcella E. (Dewey) Butler passed away on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at age 89, at Baird Nursing Home, Rochester, where she had been a resident for the past few years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Butler, and brother, Byron Dewey of Wisconsin.
She was a beautiful and treasured mother of Gerald (Lois) Butler, Bruce (Nancy) Butler, Diane (Jay) Hilts of Oneonta, Donald (Karen) Butler, Richard (Sara Foraker) Butler of Hornell; a beloved grandmother to Barbara Moore, Donna Aiken, Joanne LeClair, Michael, Mark, Bruce, John and Eric Butler, Alana Lockwood, Fred, James and David Morris, Lori Stranagan, Rebecca Hilts, Wendy LaGoy, Kelly Ricciotti and Debra Draper. Marcy also leaves many special great-grandchildren; and two loving nieces, Carolyn (Bob) Bruemmer of Wisconsin, and Jean (Frank) Bitomski of Maine.
Marcy was born on Aug. 21, 1914, in Utica, the daughter of Mark and Marcia (Nellis) Dewey.
She graduated from Delhi State University, Class of 1933, and both taught and substitute taught through the years. She taught Sunday school, served on the Board of Deacons and Board of Education at the Church of the Master in Rochester.
Marcy enjoyed interior decorating, antique collecting, reading, playing piano, gardening, and most of all her family.
Interment will take place at Webster Rural Cemetery in the spring.
Pauline L. Volkert
BAINBRIDGE — Pauline Lois Volkert, 74, of Bainbridge died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born on Nov. 14, 1929, in Goveneur, to the late Lloyd and Pauline Clifford.
She married Paul A. Volkert on April 2, 1948, in Carthage. They later lived and worked in Chenango Forks, until purchasing Bainbridge Memorial Works in 1969. Lois also owned and operated Granny's Restaurant.
She was former secretary of the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce, active in the Bainbridge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Paul A. Volkert, Bainbridge; three children and their spouses, Paula and George Gifford, Bainbridge, Brad and Judy Volkert, Bainbridge, and Herbert and Karen Volkert, Dryden; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Michelle Gifford, Bainbridge, Jennifer Cannistra and husband Jarrett, Bainbridge, Gary Gifford, Milford, Mary Gifford, Endicott, Dr. Theresa Volkert and fiance Dr. Scott Colonna, N. Providence, R.I., Tricia Volkert, Johnson City, Paul D. Volkert, Bainbridge, Amanda Volkert, Kristina Volkert, Tiffany Volkert, and Nicole Volkert, all of Dryden; a sister, Doris Haller, Binghamton; a brother, Deforest and Frances Clifford, Whitney Point; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Douglas Horne will officiate.

Ruth E. Mullen
MARGARETVILLE — Ruth Elizabeth Mullen, 77, of Margaretville passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Windgate Health Care Facility, Highland.
She was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Park Ridge, Ill., the daughter of John Henry Redder and Elizabeth Willey Hartigan.
Ruth was predeceased by her first husband, John Walter Martenson and her second husband, William J. Mullen.
Ruth had worked in many businesses dealing with bookkeeping, sales, and answering services. She also had a teacher certification and had taught mathematics. At one time a part-time teacher at Margaretville Central School.
She had enjoyed swimming and bowling. She wrote for the Catskill Mt. Newspaper. She was the secretary and treasurer of the Middletown Republican Committee.
She attended the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville. Ruth loved to travel the Eastern seaboard, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Bermuda and Ireland. She also made two trips to the Holy Lands.
Ruth is survived by one son, Arthur Martenson of California.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the funeral home, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in the Shavertown Cemetery, Andes.

Betty Jean Moss
WALTON — Betty Jean Moss of Walton died after a short illness on Dec. 3, 2003, at Albany Medical Center in Albany. She was 76.
She was born June 19, 1927, in Cooperstown, to the late Ernest A. and Lena Ostrander Valentine.
She was educated in Walton and graduated from Walton High School in 1946. On Sept. 21, 1947, she married Robert Moss at the United Methodist Church in Walton.
Betty worked at Keyser Silk Mill and later for 15 years she was a cook at Walton Central School, retiring in 1986. Upon retirement she enjoyed 17 years of wintering in Florida.
She loved camping, knitting and sewing for her grandchildren. Betty loved watching her grandchildren play sports. She was a dear friend to those who knew and loved her. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Walton.
Betty Jean Moss is survived by her husband, Robert Moss, at home in Walton; four sons, Robert W. and his wife, Ranee of Laurens, Gerald and his wife, Bernita of Whitney Point, Timothy of Otego, and Thomas and his wife, Laura of Wellman, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Walter, Michael, Mary, Adam, Heidi, Justin, Owen, Stephen, Danny, C.J. and Anna; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Tyler; three brothers, Ernest of Delhi, Carl of Arizona, and Louis of Walton; one sister, Dixie of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara.
Betty's family will receive friends one hour prior to funeral services at the United Presbyterian Church, corner of North and East Streets, Walton. The funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in memory of Betty can be made to the United Presbyterian Church, Walton.

Martha Muehl
ONEONTA — Martha Geraldine "Pat" Muehl, 73, passed away Dec. 3, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born April 1, 1930, in Elk Creek, Schenevus, the daughter of William and Dorothy (Whitbeck) Whitney.
On Oct. 31, 1953, she married Joseph J. Muehl in Oneonta.
Pat graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central School, Schenevus. She worked for Oneonta Public Schools, the Health Bar Restaurant, Bresee's Department Store, and State University College at Oneonta.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, reading, music and most of all her family.
Survivors include, her husband, Joseph Muehl, of Oneonta; a daughter, Brenda and husband William DeForest of Falls Church, Va., their children, Matthew and Catherine; a son, Bruce and wife Mary Muehl of Charlotte, N.C., and their children, Shelley, Caroline and Melanie; her mother, Dorothy Whitney of Schenevus; a brother, William and wife Lois Whitney of Esperance; a sister, Jane Beams of Schenevus; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her father, William Whitney and a brother, Clark Whitney.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward J. Golding as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.
At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the Intensive Care Unit, Bassett Healthcare Hospital, 1 Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Helen Danelo
STAMFORD — Helen Danelo, 86, of Stamford, and formerly of Ellenville and Brooklyn, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late William and Sophie Mazurkewitz.
She was married to George Danelo in 1937. He passed away Aug. 25, 1989.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Irene and Edward Guba of Ellenville and Constance and Donald Moseman of Stamford; her grandchildren, Edward George and Gregory John Guba and Diana Lynn Moseman; and her great-grandsons, Nicholas Edward and Branden Gregory Guba.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Al Mazurkewitz and Michael Manning.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial services and burial will be held later.

Ronald E. Buel
GILBOA — Ronald E. Buel, 75, of Potter Mountain Road in Gilboa, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
Ronald was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Prattsville, the son of Andrew Buel and Mae Tompkins.
He married Arlene Dean on May 15, 1949, in Prattsville.
He was in the United States Army during World War II from Sept. 23, 1946, until Jan. 17, 1948. He served in Korea and received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal in Japan.
He was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and loved all his grandchildren.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Arlene Buel; three daughters, Elaine Porter, Victoria Rutherford and Dawn Fleischman; two sons, Ernest Buel and Terry Buel; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ross Buel, of Gilboa, George Perry, of Stamford, and Shirley Buel, of Freehold; three sisters, Mildred Harkness, of Prattsville, Gladys Johnson, of West Virginia, and Evelyn Tuttle, of Schenectady.
He was predeceased by two grandchildren and four brothers, Richard Buel, Nelson Buel, Leonard Buel and Gordon Perry and one sister, Ginny Rizzo.
Calling hours will be held at 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
Burial will be at a later date in Manorkill Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
Marjorie Strickland
UNADILLA — Marjorie Helen Strickland, 78, of Unadilla passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 13, 1925, in the Bronx, the daughter of Charles and Anna Carlson.
She was married to Donald K. Strickland on Feb. 5, 1943, in Bergenfield, N.J. Marjorie attended school in the Bronx and Bergenfield.
She was employed by Fair Haven Nursing Home in Unadilla for 13 years and for 16 years was employed by the Unatego Central School in the cafeteria. After retirement from the school she worked as manager of the senior meal site in Unadilla and was the crossing guard at Unadilla Elementary School.
Marjorie was a member of the Unadilla Fire Department Auxiliary and a former member of the Unadilla American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Oneonta Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was the treasurer, head deaconess and community service leader.
Marjorie enjoyed knitting, sewing and baking.
She is survived by four daughters, Marjorie and Barbara Strickland, both of Unadilla, Linda and James Goodrich and children Robbie and Wesley Couse of Worcester, Donna Gile and children Valarie and Mara Tompkins of Largo, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rose Strickland and children Crystal, Rodney, Kelly and Melissa of Otego; a daughter-in-law, Heidi Strickland, and children Cody and Mikayla of Bainbridge; granddaughter, Jessica Murphy and husband SSG Paul R. Murphy III of Ft. Drum, (currently stationed in Iraq); a great-grandson, Zechariah Shaw of Largo; special children, Tom, Mary and Andrew Hoyt of Unadilla; nine nieces and nephews; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Ray Bunger of Toms River, N.J.; and two sisters-in-law, Edith Strickland of Kingston, and Rose Carlson of Whiting, N.J.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1997; two sons, Kenneth in 1958, and Ronald in 1986; a son-in-law, Duane Tompkins in 1997; two sisters, Ruth Lomax and Anna Crum; and a brother, Walter Carlson.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), with the Rev. Rob McKay, pastor of Oneonta Seventh Day Adventist Church in West Oneonta, officiating.
Relatives and friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla, at their convenience after noon on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. The family will be in attendance at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003.
Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, in the spring.
It is requested that memorial contributions may be given to the Delaware County Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838 in memory of Marjorie Helen Strickland.
