Robert G. May

STAMFORD — Robert G. May, 78, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.

He was born on May 18, 1925, in College Point, Queens.

He was a carpenter, and belonged to the Carpenters Union and the VFW in College Point, Queens.

Robert is survived by his wife, Alice N. May, of Stamford; one daughter and son-in-law; one grandchild of Canton, Ga.; and two sons at home.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato at the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

Contributions may be made to the Stamford Fire Department in his name.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Ida O'Connor

ALBANY — Ida Lucy McCue O'Connor, 84, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at her home.

Born and educated in Yonkers, she was the daughter of the late Edward M. and Ida C. McKnight McCue Sr.

Mrs. O'Connor moved to Cairo, Greene County, with her husband and family in November 1958. After raising her family, she obtained her driver's license and entered the work force in 1968. She retired from Stiefel Laboratories in Oak Hill, as floor supervisor in the pharmaceutical department in 1985, after 17 years of service.

She and her husband moved to Albany in 1997. Mrs. O'Connor was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Cairo where she also taught religious education. More recently, she was a communicant of St. James Church in Albany and being homebound, she appreciated the special attention provided by the Christian Service Committee at St. James. She was so grateful for the love and friendship of her Eucharistic Minister, Mrs. Pearl Cleary, who brought her Holy Communion in her home every Sunday.

Mrs. O'Connor was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and ceramics. Through the years, she made many beautiful gifts for family and friends that will always be treasured.

She was the beloved wife of Joseph Louis O'Connor of 62 years; mother of Louis (Marcia) O'Connor of Stamford, Joseph O'Connor of Miami Lakes, Fla., Bernadette (Warren) Hoovler of Spanish Springs, Nev., Janet (Wayne) Birk of Venice, Fla., Ronald (Joan) O'Connor of Ancram, Rita (Jesse) Nelson of Collegeville, Pa., Gary O'Connor of Albany, Mary (Peter) Reinsdorf of Niverville, and Sheila (Patrick) Gallagher of Yalesville, Conn.; mother-in-law of Joyce and Illeana O'Connor; sister of Lois (Lenny) Curran of Orangeburg, and the late Florence, Edward, Joseph and Thomas McCue, Mary Bach, Alice Robinson and Theresa Nori. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Joel Ray O'Connor in 1998.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Mountain Avenue, Cairo, on Monday at 10 a.m. Calling hours will be held Saturday 2 to 4 p.m. in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany and Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo. Burial will be private.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Church, Mountain Avenue, Cairo, NY 12413 or St. James Church-Organ Restoration, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany, NY 12209.

The family would like to thank the Albany Paramedics, the staff of St. Peter's ER and the Rev. John Tallman for all their efforts and compassion.

John A. Sill

COOPERSTOWN — John A. Sill, 88, of Cooperstown died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at his home.

John was born on Feb. 9, 1915, in Cooperstown, a son of G. Reed and Leila (Aller) Sill.

He married Alice Jane Rigdon on Feb. 21, 1942, in Williamsport, Pa.

In his youth, John played football, basketball and baseball under the legendary athletic director of Cooperstown Central School, Lester G. "Red" Bursey. "Red" was a mentor to John, and, upon his graduation from Cooperstown High School in 1935, "Red's" influence caused him to attend his alma mater, Springfield College, in Massachusetts.

A veteran of the United States Army Air Force, John entered the service in 1942 and served his country during World War II, seeing action in air offensives over Normandy and other parts of Europe. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945.

For several years, he was the assistant service representative in Cooperstown for the Veterans Administration.

In 1947, John joined his parents in the management of Ellsworth & Sill, which, at the time, was a dry goods store on Main Street in Cooperstown. Formerly known as Taylor & Ellsworth, which was founded in 1898, the store took on its present name when John's father, G. Reed Sill, purchased a half interest in the business in 1920. John and his wife, Jane, eventually obtained full ownership of the store, retiring in November 1979, when they sold the store to Ron and Marti Jex and Eric and Charlene Hill.

John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, where at one time he was an Elder of the church and served on the session. He was also a member of the Cooperstown Native Sons, the Mohican Club, the Cooperstown Rotary Club, and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown. An active member of the Cooperstown Sportsmans' Association and Ducks Unlimited, he enjoyed trap shooting and hunting upland water fowl.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane, of The Meadows; one daughter, Mrs. JoAnne LaRue and her husband, Lawrence, of Toledo, Ohio; one granddaughter, Andrea Steward and her husband, Joseph of Valrico, Fla.; and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Alexxa Steward.

He was predeceased by one son, John R. Sill, and one brother, G. Reed Sill Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Mohican Club, 138 Main St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Armando Boschetti

MEXICO CITY — Armando Boschetti, 76, of Mexico City, Mexico, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at his home in Mexico.

Armando was born March 21, 1927, in Bairdford, Pa., son of the late Joseph and Esther (Lubatti) Boschetti.

Leaving home at the tender age of 15 years old, Armando studied and worked at the same time to go forward in life, becoming an entrepreneur.

After serving in the United States Navy, he graduated from Ohio State University as a chemist. At the age of 24 he began a successful career as president for Riker Laboratories in Mexico, a division of Rexall Drug and Chemical Company. He also achieved directorship of 3 M Company, eventually retiring from Arco Chemical Company.

He was assigned and renowned among the greatest inventors of the United States, achieving the inventions of several patents.

Armando is survived by his devoted wife, Martha Gongalez, of Mexico; a son, Mark of Texas; a daughter, Brent of Mexico; a grandson, Jason of California; and a granddaughter, Orlee of Mexico; three brothers, Quinto of California, Alec of Nevada, and Leonard of Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Parsons of Oneonta, and Rose Marie Millias of Goodyear Lake. He also had several nieces and nephews.

Armando was predeceased by a grandson, Charles, three brothers, Edward, Joseph and Anthony, and a sister, Jennie Heon.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to all for their prayers and support during this difficult time.

Marion F. Hoke

BURLINGTON FLATS — Mrs. Marion Frances Hoke, 91, formerly of Angel Hill Road, Burlington Flats, and Bronner Manor Apartments, Park Street, Richfield Springs, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare.

She was born in Frankfort on July 27, 1912, the daughter of the late Leigh and Jennie Mae Shane Howard, and attended Frankfort Schools.

Marion was married to Ralph Jones in April 1942. The couple relocated to Columbia Center. Mr. Jones passed away on June 29, 1949. She was later married to Robert S. Hoke in November 1965. Mr. Hoke passed away on April 15, 1998.

Marion is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Bronwyn Gaudin of Ilion, and Susan and James Clarkin of Holland Patent; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence Howard, William Howard and Arthur Howard, and one sister, Gertrude Howard.

Her funeral will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Oak View Cemetery.

Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort.

Thamar L. Harper

HARTWICK — Thamar L. ("Tim") Harper Sr., 72, of Hartwick died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 10, 2003.

He was born on June 14, 1931, in Harman, W.Va., a son of Carney and Sylva J. (Teeter) Harper.

He married Harriette Preston on April 2, 1951, in the state of Maryland.

In his youth, Thamar attended a two-room schoolhouse in Harman, as well as Harperton Grade School. At the age of 16 he assisted in building the flood dam in Elkins, W.Va., and was later employed by Republic Steel in Youngstown, Ohio.

In 1953, he and his family moved to New York state and settled in Hartwick in 1959. Throughout the years, he has been employed by Peterson's Farm in Milford, Wright's Farm Supply in Hartwick, Corning Glass in Oneonta, and the Town of Laurens Highway Department.

In the early 1970s, he served as Highway Superintendent for the Town of Hartwick and at one time was Chief of Hartwick Fire Department Company No. 1. In recent years, he had owned and operated Tim Harper's Stump Removal.

A true family man, Thamar especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. He also had a deep love for his home state of West Virginia.

Thamar is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Harriette, of Hartwick; his children, Deborah Clegg and her husband, Ronald, of Hartwick, Thamar L. Harper Jr. and his wife, Lori, of Hartwick, Norma Jean Burkhart of West Oneonta, and James C. Harper and his wife, Deborah, of Hartwick; his grandchildren, Jacob J. Burkhart and his wife, Kimberly, Andrew T. Clegg and his fiancee, Anne Hall, Eric R. Burkhart and Becki White, and Carney P. Harper; his siblings, Helen and Homer Rapp, Billy and Louise Harper, Howard and Sis Harper, Rosemary and Bobby Vance, and Kitty and Jack Judy, all of West Virginia, Anna May and Layne Hinkle of Ohio; one brother-in-law, Charles Preston of Cooperstown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Phillip Daniel Clegg, who died on April 29, 1985, and Amanda J. Clegg, who died on Nov. 3, 1987.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, when Thamar's family will be in attendance.

Interment will be on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, in the Jacob C. Harper Family Cemetery near Harman, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Evelyn Litwin

OTEGO — Evelyn Litwin, 75, of Otego died Dec. 10, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 9, 1928, in the Bronx, to George and Carrie Utermark Maidhoff.

Evelyn was married to Joseph E. Litwin for 49 years before he predeceased her on Jan. 28, 2000.

Evelyn worked as an operator for River Heights Answering Service in New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1996. She and Joseph moved to Otego after retirement.

She enjoyed knitting and bingo and was a Roman Catholic.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Josephine Litwin of Otego; grandsons, George Litwin of Secaucus, N.J. and Joseph Litwin of Otego; great-grandson, Jordan Litwin; sister, Anne Westphal; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, son, George Litwin, and several brothers and sisters.

At her request, there are no calling hours or service.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Robert C. White

ONEONTA — Robert Currier White, 82, of Oneonta went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Davenport, the son of Winton J. and Gertrude (VanZandt) White.

In his early years, Bob lived in Englewood, N.J., where he graduated from Dwight Morrow High School. During the summers, his family would live in Davenport. He received his bachelor's degree at Trenton State Teachers College and his master's degree at Teachers College at Columbia University.

Bob served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in the United States and Southeast Asia-Pacific areas from 1943 to 1946. Later he was a liaison officer for the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado while serving in the United States Air Force Reserves. He received an honorable discharge and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

On April 24, 1948, Bob married Florence A. Smith in Oneonta.

Bob was a chemistry teacher at Oneonta High School and later returned as the superintendent of schools in Oneonta. He served on the Board of Cooperative Educational Services for Greene, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego Counties.

He was a member of the Oneonta Rotary Club; chair of Rotary District 7170 Student Rotary Exchange Committee from 1968 to 1969; president from 1970 to 1971; district governor from 1979 to 1980; a leader of the 3 H Rotary Team to Jamaica in the 1980s and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Bob was also a member of Oneonta Lodge No. 466 Free and Accepted Masons; Oneonta American Legion Post 259; Oneonta Salvation Army advisory board; member and elder of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta; the American Association of School Administration; the New York State Council of School District Administrators; director of the Greater Oneonta Chamber of Commerce and former chair of the executive committee for Catskil1 Area School Study Council. He was also a former member of the Otsego County Board of Representatives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Florence White, of Oneonta; daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, Paul Gunther, of Hamilton; son, Winton, and daughter-in-law, Akemi White, of Yokosuka, Japan; and daughter, Karen Fieg, of Grimes, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Michelle Drake and her husband, Daniel, Kimberly Gunther, Winton Currier Yuichiro White II, Robert Kenji White, Emilie Fieg, Edward Fieg and Nancy Fieg; a great-grandson, Joshua Drake; a brother, Dr. David C. White of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Roger Marmon of Cortland; and nieces and nephews, Richard White, David White Jr., Cheryl Hart, Diane Killan, David Marmon and Paul Marmon.

Bob was predeceased by a sister, Marian Helene White; a brother, Winton White Jr., and his wife, Nancy; and a sister-in-law, Georgene Marmon.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert White will be held at the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, in the spring.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to either the First United Presbyterian Church or to the Rotary Club Student Exchange Program in loving memory of Robert C. White.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
