Roger E. All

WORCESTER — Roger E. All, 80, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 19, 1923, in Westford, the son of Earl and Florence (Goodrich) All.

Roger attended Westford School District No. 10 and was a graduate of Worcester Central School, Class of 1941.

He married Ruth Spencer Potter on Aug. 16, 1950, in Oneonta. Roger was a self-employed dairy and poultry farmer in Westford and was a Worcester area driver for the Otsego County Nutritional Program; he attended the Schenevus United Methodist Church; was a member of the Worcester Grange No. 1274 for 50 years, also a member of the Otsego County Pomona Grange and the New York State and National Granges; he was on the board of directors and an agent for the Otsego County Patrons Cooperative Fire Relief Association and a past director for the Otsego Electric Cooperative Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth I. All, of Worcester; a son, Dale, and wife Glennyce All of Cobleskill; grandchildren, Joseph, Channing and Briana All; sister-in-law, Esther Peaster, and her children, Nancy Peaster, Barbara Stiefel and Philip Peaster; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Beverly Furey, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Donald F. Birdsall

HAMDEN — Donald F. Birdsall, 89, of Hamden passed away at home Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, after a long illness.

Donald was born in the town of Delhi, on Nov. 28, 1914, the son of Floyd and Margery Boggs Birdsall.

He was a self-employed dairy farmer his entire life.

On June 15, 1939, he married the former Freda Henderson in Walton. She died Oct. 22, 1977.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting on his farm, with many trophies from past hunts in his home. He was also an avid gun collector and a member of the NRA. He was also an old-time gas engine enthusiast. He was a member of the DeLancey Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by two sons, Floyd N. Birdsall of Hamden and James E. Birdsall of Walton; four grandchildren, Jim, Daryl, Desiree and Carissa; four great-grandchildren, Monica, Brittany, Jessica and Tyler; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Donald A. Birdsall, in 1964, two brothers, Edward and Gordon Birdsall, and one sister, Letha Birdsall.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Joe Bokel, pastor of the South Kortright Community Church, chaplain at Countryside Care Center, and Missionary Teacher at the New Life Bible College, Moscow, Russia, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Donald's memory to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820-2084. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.

Benjamin Krohn

ONEONTA — Benjamin Krohn, 106 years old, of Oneonta died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at his home in Oneonta.

Mr. Krohn was born June 29, 1897, in Utica, to Abraham and Anna Marwell Krohn.

Mr. Krohn was a World War I Army veteran.

He married Hannah Assinovsky on Nov. 6, 1921, in Utica. She predeceased him in 1991.

Mr. Krohn was owner and operator of Oneonta Tire and Auto Parts from the 1920s to the 1980s, when he retired.

Mr. Krohn is survived by his daughters, Florence Baker of California, Betty Polow of Vermont and Ellen Burr of California; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of the life of Mr. Krohn will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home.

Emily (Helen) Curtis

NORWICH — Emily (Helen) Curtis, 91, longtime resident of Hayward Avenue, Norwich, passed away Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14, 2003, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Helen was born Dec. 26, 1911, in Laurens. On Oct. 13, 1938, she married Leon Fenton, who passed away Jan. 17, 1951; and on Nov. 4, 1956, she married Ray Curtis, who passed away Dec. 1, 1994.

Helen grew up in the Laurens area, where she attended their local schools and, at the age of 16, moved to Norwich. While living in the Norwich area, Helen worked for the Norwich Knitting Mill, Norwich Pharmacal Company, W.T. Grant Company, the cafeteria at Perry Browne School and TACO of Sherburne, from which she retired.

Following her retirement, Helen and her husband, Ray, became snowbirds and enjoyed traveling to Florida during the winter months for more than 20 years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed her sewing. Above all else, Helen loved to sit on her front porch and rock, and visit with her neighbors and friends.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Janet Edson Crandall and her husband, Hillis of Norwich: her stepson, Ray Curtis Jr. and wife Mary of Green River, Wyo.; and her grandchildren, Dale Carnrike and his wife, Pat of Lake Ariel, Pa., Denise Nower and her husband, Charles of Earlville, Analisa Angle and her husband, Kip of Earlville, and Robin Carnrike of Edmeston. Also surviving are her seven great-grandchildren, Mandy, Butch, Brittney, Lisa, Joseph, Andrew and Danielle; three stepgrandchildren, John, Ronald and Gary Curtis; her loving niece and best friend, Eleanor Gibson of Norwich, along with several other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, Helen was also pre-deceased by her son, Charles Fenton, in 1968; her brother, Ralph Edson; and her sister, Jessie Stone.

Funeral services for Helen will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church of Norwich, will officiate.

Interment will be at a later date in the Laurens Village Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Leon J. Bailey

COOPERSTOWN — Leon J. 'Sonny' Bailey, 83, of Linden Avenue, died Saturday evening, Dec. 13, 2003, at his home.

Sonny was born on Oct. 10, 1920, in Cooperstown, a son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Sauve) Bailey.

He married Janet Davidson on June 22, 1946, in Cooperstown.

A lifelong resident of Cooperstown, he graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1939, where he had participated in varsity basketball and football. After attending Albany Business College, he proudly served his country during World War II as a Crew Chief on a Martin Mariner in the Naval Air Corps. His squadron saw considerable action throughout the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was honorably discharged in 1945, having received numerous medals and citations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1946, Sonny began a 40-year career at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where he served in various departments, retiring in 1986 as the assistant administrator.

He was a member of St. Mary's 'Our Lady of the Lake' Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Leatherstocking Golf Course, where he was a member of the "40-year Foursome." He was also a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown, the Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, and he especially enjoyed woodworking and photography.

Sonny is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Debbie Bridger of Cooperstown and Barbara Ann Bailey of Albany; a son, Rich 'Beetle' Bailey and his wife, Nancy of Cooperstown; three grandchildren, Stephen Bridger, Kimberly (Jeff) Feik and Lindsey Bailey, all of Cooperstown; one great-grandson, Scott Feik; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Walter Bailey, and his sister, Irene Lent.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, when Sonny's family will be in attendance.

Burial will be later in Lakewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326, Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or St. Peter's Rehabilitation Unit, 315 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, NY 12209.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Herman E. Quay

CHERRY VALLEY — Herman E. Quay, 77, of Cherry Valley died at the Northeast Center for Special Care, Lake Katrine, on Dec. 13, 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 2, 1926, in Albany, he was the son of the late Glen and Rose Quay.

Herman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lolita; his son, Herman; his daughter, Colleen; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Glen, and daughter, Kathy, predeceased him.

Following Naval service in the South Pacific during World War II, he worked as a carpenter before assuming his lifelong occupation as a dairy farmer. After the war, he joined the National Guard and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class before retiring.

An avid outdoorsman and collector of antiquities, he ran a successful antique business for several years following his retirement.

He was a volunteer fireman and a member, twice commander, of the Cherry Valley American Legion Post No. 1360.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at the Cherry Valley Methodist Church, 82 Main St., at 11 a.m. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Quay residence.

Memorial donations may be made to Cherry Valley Rescue Squad, the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.

Linda M. Clark

DELHI — Linda M. Clark, 60, of Elk Creek, Delhi, passed away peacefully Sunday night, Dec. 14, 2003, at home, in the presence of her family.

The daughter of the late Clarence C.W. and Mabel (Comino) Howard, she was born June 28, 1943, in Oneonta, and married Peter D. Clark, July 20, 1963, in Franklin.

A graduate of Franklin Central School, where she grew up, Linda moved to Delhi in 1963, was a homemaker, assisting her husband in the daily activities and operation of the family dairy farm, of which she was solely responsible for maintaining the financial records. In addition, for a number of years, she was also a partner with Jane Hymers in "Painter's Pantry," doing local decorative painting.

An active member and champion of the Delhi College Golf Course Women's Association, of which she was treasurer, Linda also served on the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Mental Health Association.

Possessing a compassionate nature and empowering personality, to many people Linda was a friend in whom they could confide with confidence.

In addition to her husband of 40 years, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Marty Stallone, Wyomissing, Pa., and their children, Wade and Joliet; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Kelly Clark, Delhi, and their children, Taylor, Darin and Kyle; a brother, William Howard, Mt. Vision; and a large circle of other relatives and close friends, especially Celia Clark, Delhi, her sister-in-law and confidant.

Friends are invited to attend services, 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, 4 Clinton St., Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. There are no calling hours; however, a reception will follow the service.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753, or Delaware County Children's Christmas Fund, care of Barbara Sturdevant, 13 Second St., Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Melvin E. Yager

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Melvin E. Yager Sr., 64, of Middlefield Center died Sunday night, Dec. 14, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1939, in Cooperstown, a son of Frederick and Ida (Miller) Yager.

Melvin attended local schools and started working at a young age. He worked at Beechnut in Canajoharie, Phillips Lumber in Hartwick, as well as a number of area farmers. Melvin has been an area resident his entire life.

He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, farming and loved his animals. Melvin enjoyed listening to country music, he liked Elvis and liked watching old movies.

He is survived by two sons, Melvin E. Yager Jr. of Mayfield and Lloyd E. Yager of Northfield; a daughter, Anna Cummings of Norwich; three grandsons; one granddaughter; three sisters, Virginia Fort, Dayle Chandler and Rose Pink; and a brother, Steven Yager.

Melvin was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Wesley and Fred Yager Jr.; five sisters, Josephine Graham, Ella Louise Darrow, Grace Butler, Nancy Searles and Frances Thayer.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
