Helen R. Greiner

FRANKLIN — Helen R. Greiner, 80, of Franklin went home to her Lord on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, after a long battle with heart and kidney disease.

She was born March 30, 1923, in Elizabeth, N.J., the daughter of Ada and Albert Robst.

She spent her young years growing up in the Oxford and Windsor area. Graduating from the Oxford Academy in 1941, she married Harry H. Greiner Jr. in 1943. They lived their life together in Franklin. He predeceased her in 1989.

Helen worked at ECD Bendix in Sidney for 35 years, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, Sidney Women of the Moose, Lodge 277, and the Sidney American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her loving son, Harry S. and (Doris) Greiner of Harpursville; her loving daughter, Carolyn and (Leslie) Thies of Franklin; her grandchildren, Mark and Kim Thies of Franklin, Matthew and Jennifer Thies of Unadilla, Mikal Thies of Franklin, Karen (Greiner) and Eric Gilbertson of Otego; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Marsh of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Bernard Robst of Ridgeway, S.C.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clarence (Ace) Robst and a sister, Adele.

Helen will always be remembered for her fun personality, doing for others, and the love she always gave to her family and friends. She took enjoyment in sewing for others, berry picking, and the making of her many Halloween costumes. She loved to dance, and much more.

She was a friend to everyone. If you knew her, you knew you had a good friend. She will be greatly missed by everyone. We all loved her.

Friends may call on Monday Jan. 5, 2004, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, from 6 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dialysis Center of M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Howard E. Clink

ONEONTA — Howard E. Clink Sr., husband, father and friend went to be with our Heavenly Father on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.

Howard was born in Bainbridge on May 3, 1936, son of Howard D. Clink and Reba Elaine Rogers.

He spent most of his early years in the Binghamton area, and a short time in the Rochester area, moving to Oneonta in 1966, where he worked for Monser Brothers Tire until retiring in 1985.

While in the Binghamton area, he met his wife, Mary Nilson, they were married Dec. 26, and they shared 42 wonderful years together.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Howard joined Cub Scout Pack 24 in 1986, and served in various positions until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Michelle and Diane; four sons, Christopher and Trish, Howard Jr. and Suzanne, Alan and Jen, and Bruce; 11 grandchildren, Jimmy Earl, Samy Jon, Amanda, Katrina, Megan, Melissa, Stephen, Mark, Jessica, Rebecca and Ismel.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Kim.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, with Major Kathy Applin of The Salvation Army officiating at the funeral home. Friends are invited to join the family after the services at the Moose Lodge from 2 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations to the Oneonta Fire Department or Otschodela Council BSA in Howard's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Helen VanDenburg

COLONIE — Helen "Gladys" VanDenburg, 88, of Brigadier Street, died suddenly Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at her residence.

Born in Delhi, May 17, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Herman J. and Julia S. Coulter.

Gladys was the wife of 49 years to the late Harry R. VanDenburg.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Southern Tier Beauty Academy. She worked for IBM in Endicott and Scintilla Magneto Corp. in Sidney, before moving to Albany. She retired from Albany International after 34 years of service.

She was one of the original members of People's Baptist Church, now known as Calvary Baptist Church.

She loved old movies and the Lawrence Welk Show.

Gladys was predeceased by her sister, Edith Naglitsch and brother, William Coulter.

Affectionately known as Aunt Glad, she is survived by many nieces, nephews and their children.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Frederick Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany.

Interment will be in Memory's Garden Cemetery, Colonie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Calvary Baptist Church, 12 Launfal St., Albany, NY 12205.

Georgette Edwards

ONEONTA — Georgette Edwards, 89, of Oneonta passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Fox Nursing Home, surrounded by family.

She was born March 30, 1914, in Goble, Ore., the daughter of Louis and Helene (Spenle) Muller, who emigrated from Alsace, France.

She married John Hall Edwards on Oct. 19, 1929, who predeceased her October 1986.

After traveling to France at 8 years of age and having her first taste of wine, she and her parents returned to New York City.

Nicknamed "Frenchie" while attending school, she moved several times but was perpetually devoted to the farm her family purchased in Jefferson.

Always eager to travel, she is once more "on the road again."

She loved her family with all of her heart and gave the greatest gifts of all: incredible stories, wonderful memories, and a beautiful smiling face. She was deeply loved. The "last rose of summer" is still in bloom.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Edwards) McCann and her husband, John, of Roslyn Heights, her daughter, Jeanne (Edwards) Savage and her husband, Herbert, of Palm Harbor, Fla., her daughter, Jacqueline (Edwards) Newell and her husband, Art, of Miller Place, her daughter, Laurie Edwards and partner, Michael Vanderhoof, of Oneonta; and her son, John Edwards, and his wife, Jennie, of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren, Cathy and John, Jimmy, Judy, Bobby, and Brett, Danielle and Michael, Michelle and Tia, Milo and Devlin; and her great-grandchildren, Margo and Alexander, Sarah and Brian, Jessica and Chase, Alexander, and Alejandra; her special cousin, Nellie; her family in France; and many good friends.

We would like to thank all the nurses and health aides at A.O. Fox Nursing Home for all their loving comfort and care given to Mom during her stay, especially in the last week.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fox Nursing Home Aides and Nurses, on Unit 1.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Cynthia Rascionato

ONEONTA — Cynthia D. Rascionato, 52, of Oneonta passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, after a valiant struggle with brain cancer.

She was born on July 2, 1951, in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Lila Luteraan.

She was schooled in Van Nuys, Calif., and at a private school in Holland.

Cindy was a very talented seamstress and was the proprietor of her own business called Needles 'N' Pins, a complete fabric store, which was a longtime dream. Unfortunately her illness cut short this dream. She was sorry to disappoint her loyal customers who were being established.

Prior to her marriage she had been employed by Dr. Schoonover and Bassett Eye Care.

She dedicated her life as one of Jehovah Witnesses. She will be missed by many there.

Cindy is survived by her mother, Lila Luteraan; her children, Maryka and Darcy Stone; her sister, Jennifer Kemper; two brothers, Randy Kemper and his wife, Marilyn, and their daughter, Amy, and Glenn Luteraan and his wife, Karen, and their children, Cameron and Kirsten; her favorite aunt, Shirley Stock-Sanchez, and her three children and their families; and her uncles, aunts, cousins; and many dear friends locally and in Holland.

She was predeceased by her husband, Emelio Rascionato Sr.; maternal grandparents, Robert and Freda Millhouse, and their son, Ralph; father, Byron W. Kemper; paternal grandparents, Gerald and Jessie Kemper.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff on the second floor at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and Dr. Wolf-Gould for their tender and thoughtful care of our loved one.

There will be no calling hours or service.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Kingdom Hall, West Oneonta.

Donations in Cindy's memory may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820.

Cremation was handled by Leatherstocking Crematory, Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Stanley Petkewec

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Stanley V. Petkewec, 86, of Manley Street, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on June 3, 1917, in Frankfort, son of the late Joseph and Filomena Barecki Petkewec.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Hartwick High School.

On April 18, 1944, he married the former Anna Castelic in Saint Mary's Church, Cooperstown. A loving and devoted union of 40 years, she preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1985.

For 25 years Mr. Petkewec owned and operated the family dairy farm on Route 28 in Schuyler Lake, retiring in 1967. In 1968, he went to work as a salesman for the I.L. Richard Company in Richfield Springs, where he remained until 1985.

He had a strong belief in God and was a faithful member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Stan had served as Justice of the Peace for the town of Exeter and was a past president of the Fly Creek Dairy Co-Op when it was in existence.

His down-to-earth manner flowed from his character. Any conversation with him was frank and to the point. But you could sense a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him.

He took great joy in traveling with his son, Patrick, to the many farms that Pat serviced with his lime spreading business. During those journeys he made many new friends who will truly miss him. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his son, Patrick Petkewec of Schuyler Lake, his long time companion, Dorothy Blysick of Richfield Springs; his former daughter-in-law, Debbie Petkewec of Cherry Valley; one brother, Charles and his wife, Margaret, Petkewec of Hartwick, one grandson, Michael and his wife, Megan, Petkewec of Cecil County, Md.; and five nieces.

Funeral will be from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs at 10 a.m. The Rev. Terence Healy will officiate.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Petkewec will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery next spring.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of your choice.

Gertrude E. Smith

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Gertrude E. Spurbeck Smith, 90, formerly of Hill Street in Cooperstown, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 2003, at The Meadows.

Gert was born on Nov. 28, 1913, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Orlando and Caroline (Clinton) Spurbeck.

She married LeRoy F. Smith on June 8, 1935, in Middlefield. Mr. Smith died on Sept. 6, 1978.

Raised in Cooperstown, she graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1929. She went on to attend Albany State College and graduated from there in 1933, with a degree in teaching.

For almost 50 years, Gert owned and operated Spurbeck's Grocery on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Leatherstocking Street in Cooperstown, taking over the business from her father, who had originally purchased the business in 1941. The store was her life, and, even after her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Dorothy Smith, assumed management of the store, she enjoyed spending time sitting in a chair behind the front counter; and keeping watch over customers' comings and goings.

Of the Episcopal faith, she was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown. In her free time, she enjoyed fishing on Otsego Lake.

Gert is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger C. and Dorothy Smith of Cooperstown, and Walter R. and Carolyn Smith of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Joan S. Smith of Fly Creek; three grandsons, Steven, Randall and Martin Smith; two granddaughters, Laura Smith Flint and Nancy Smith; six great-grandchildren, Ariel Smith, Colton Smith, and Danette, Donovan, Stacey and Sidney Flint; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Leonce A. (Dorothy) Rousselot of Cooperstown.

At Gert's request, services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts in Gert's memory may be made to the Activities Fund, in care of The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
