John R. Hall

HARTWICK — John Rutherford Hall, 78, formerly of South Street in Hartwick, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2003, at The Meadows.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1925, in Hudson Falls, a son of Rutherford John and Gladys A. (Bryne) Hall. He married Marian Pauline Stevens on June 15, 1950, in the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston.

Raised and educated in Hudson Falls, he began school in a one- room schoolhouse on John Street in 1930. He later graduated from high school and moved to the farm owned by his father and aunt in the Town of Burlington. Throughout the years he was employed on the family farm as well as by the Towns of Burlington and Hartwick as a truck driver and by Wilson Roofing in Oneonta. He later began his own roofing and painting company, retiring in 1988.

John always had a wide variety of hobbies, including collecting stamps, coins and postcards, volunteering as a Scout Master for the Hartwick Cub and Boy Scouts, teaching hunter safety courses, fishing, hunting, and making maple syrup.

In 1977, he decided he could use one more hobby and began collecting pictures and other mementos of one-room schoolhouses. He once commented to his fishing companion, Douglas Geertgens, that, "Every rushing stream seemed to have a one-room schoolhouse somewhere nearby." Thus, he started taking a camera along with his fishing gear and a collection of photographs of one-room schoolhouses began. Over the years, he traveled many miles searching for the remnants of the area's educational past.

Around 1980, John's friend, Walter Block, who often accompanied him on school hunting trips, told him, "I'm going to start calling you School House John." The nickname appealed to John and he had business cards printed declaring himself, "School House John — specialist in one-room schoolhouses."

Throughout the ensuing years, he shared his knowledge with anyone willing to listen through news articles, talks at historical societies, and his annual attendance at the Otsego County Fair, where he helped man the schoolhouse exhibit. In addition, he was featured in at least four publications on area schools.

On May 12, 1995, he was awarded the Otsego County Local History Award, representing one of his proudest achievements. In connection with the Hartwick Days Parade in 1996, he was elected "Citizen of the Year." That was another proud moment for John. Perhaps the crowning achievement of John's years of research was the publication in 1997 of a pictorial collection of one-room schools of Otsego County entitled; "School House John's Otsego," edited by Anita Harrison.

An avid outdoorsman, John was a member of the Hartwick Rod & Gun Club, and especially enjoyed trout fishing in Otsego County streams as well as deer hunting.

He was also involved with hunter safety and was awarded a certificate on Sept. 16, 1990, for exceptional service to the New York State Sportsman Education Program and the sportsmen of New York state.

Throughout the years, John served as an umpire for countless area softball and baseball games. On June 4, 1994, he was presented with a certificate of recognition for more than 20 years of service to the games of baseball and softball by the Schohanna Board of Baseball and Softball Umpires.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marian, of Hartwick; one son, Richard J. Hall, and his wife, Maria, of Bath, Maine; two granddaughters, Melissa Ann Hall of Cedarville, and Tracy Marie Hall of Lewiston, Maine; one great-granddaughter, MacKenzie Marie Hall, and two nieces, Karen and Connie.

He was predeceased by one son, Robert Clayton Hall, and one brother, Edwin ("Ted") Bryne Hall.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Hartwick Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Christian Church, PO Box 65, Hartwick, NY 13348, or to the Hartwick Rod & Gun Club, PO Box 251, Hartwick, NY 13348 or to the Hartwick Historical Society, PO Box 1, Hartwick, NY 13348.

John's family thanks everyone from Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care and the staff at The Meadows for their kind, considerate and understanding care.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
