David W. Valk

FLEISCHMANNS — David W. Valk, 53, of Fleischmanns, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at his home in Fleischmanns.

He was born March 15, 1950, in Margaretville, to Milton Valk and June Close.

David graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1969 and from Albany Business College in 1971.

He was an over-the-road hauler for National Freight Inc., out of the Newburgh terminal.

David was a very devoted father to his daughter, Mallory Jean, who is a freshman at State University of New York at Fredonia.

He attended St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Margaretville.

David is survived by his father, Milton Valk, of Fleischmanns; his daughter, Mallory Jean; brother, Steven Valk, and his wife, Barbara, of Middletown; a sister, Carolyn Bradley, and her husband, Lynn, of Kelly Corners; a nephew, Theodore Finkle and family of Fleischmanns; four nieces, Jennifer Rowe and family of Burnt Hills, Elizabeth Bradley of New York City, Heather Freise and family of Libertyville, Ill., Hilary Valk of Atlanta, Ga.; uncles, Richard Close of Margaretville and Virgil Valk of Tucson, Ariz.; an aunt, Marjorie Eckert of Walden, several grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, June Valk, who died in January, 1999.

Friends may call Sunday, Jan. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, from the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. R. L. Donahue officiating.

Burial will be later in the Old Margaretville Cemetery.

The family suggests donations in David's memory be made to Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Hertha A. Cavan

DELHI — Hertha A. Cavan, 91, formerly of 29 Main St., Delhi, passed away peacefully, Wednesday evening, Dec. 31, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford, where she had been a resident for the past five years.

The daughter of Henrik and Sigrid (Jacobsen) Anderson, she was born May 19, 1912, in New York City, received her education at Delaware Academy, Delhi, and grew up on Cabin Hill, Andes, where she married James Ariel Cavan on Oct. 9, 1940. He died Dec. 29, 2002.

For a number of years the Cavans lived in Bloomville, moving to Delhi 35 years ago, where they resided until failing health.

A homemaker all of her life, Hertha was a longtime member of the Delhi Community Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Sigrid (Richard) Bligh, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two sons, Bruce Cavan of Sunnyvale, Calif., and David (Brenda) Cavan of Davenport, Iowa; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Wansor of Delhi; a brother, John (Alberta) Anderson of Delhi; a brother-in-law, Stuart Cavan of Jacksonville, Fla.; six nephews and two nieces.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m., and where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, by her pastor, the Rev. Paul Meisel.

Burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, or Catskill Area Hospice; will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Ronald P. Schunk

UNADILLA — Ronald P. Schunk, 71, of Unadilla, passed away peacefully in his home after a long illness, on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004.

A lifelong area resident, he was retired from Unalam in Unadilla after 38 years of service. Ron was a loving husband, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy VanGorder Schunk, whom he married Nov. 14, 1953, in Hancock; two daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Robert Smith of Unadilla and Melinda and William Barse of Unadilla; three sons and their wives, Ronald and Juanita Schunk of Cortland, Timothy and Tammy Schunk of Sidney and Thomas and Teri Schunk of Sidney; a twin brother, Donald Schunk, and sister, Marilyn Strumph, both of Honeyoye Falls; two brothers-in-law, Donald Boone of Cape Vincent and Bill and Cathy VanGorder, and a sister-in-law, Sally Titus, all of Unadilla, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, in the spring.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of 1-88). The Rev. Gordon A. Polenz of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, will officiate.

The family requests all donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Ronald P. Schunk.

The family thanks Evelyn Young and Hospice for all their care giving.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Dorothy VanKleeck

HOBART — Dorothy VanKleeck, 87, of Hobart, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Hearthstone Home for Adults, Hobart.

She was born Aug. 7, 1916, in South Kortright, the daughter of Jesse and Luella (Boggs) Dibble.

She married the late George VanKleeck on Sept. 5, 1944, in South Kortright.

Mrs. VanKleeck resided in South Kortright until 1955, and in Hobart from 1955 until 2004. She enjoyed membership in the Hobart United Methodist Church; UMW (United Methodist Women) as chair of the sunshine committee; South Kortright Presbyterian Church and South Kortright Grange.

Dorothy took great pride in operating the VanKleeck Guernsey Farm until the age of 84 — 26 years after her husband's death in 1974. Dorothy hosted the annual live Nativity celebration of Jesus' birth for the Hobart community. She was known as the unofficial "Sunshine Lady" of Hobart and as "Grandma Dot" to all the school children who visited the VanKleeck Guernsey Farm over the years.

She is survived by a son, Gary VanKleeck, and daughter-in-law, Romelyn VanKleeck; granddaughters, Vanessa Koza, Justine VanKleeck, Shaina VanKleeck and Audrey VanKleeck; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alexandra and Trey Koza, Isaiah VanKleeck and Darrion VanKleeck; and a daughter, Nancy Smith, and her partner, Daniel Morrissey; grandsons, Aaron Smith, Adam Smith, and granddaughter, Aimee Smith.

A sister, Eleanor (Dibble) Stoeckel, and brother-in-law, Gerald Stoeckel, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Charles Moore, also survive.

She was predeceased by her husband, George, a sister, Marion Shore, and brother-in-law, J. Neville Shore.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, at MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Hobart United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring at Valley View Cemetery, South Kortright.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Alfred G. Haynes

ONEONTA — Alfred G. Haynes, 83, of Oneonta died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Roses Brook, the son of Andres and Gladys (Young) Haynes.

Alfred graduated from Hobart Central School and Delhi Tech.

On May 29, 1942, he married Edith Caldwell in Albany.

Alfred was a highway engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation in Binghamton for many years.

He enjoyed model railroads and woodworking.

Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Edith Haynes, of Oneonta; his four children and their spouses, Judy and Myron Dadson of Lutz, Fla., Jim and Karen Haynes of Watertown, Laurine and Adam Sieminski of Washington, D.C., and Mary Susan and Eddie Povich of Ellsworth, Maine; his six grandchildren; his four great-grandchildren, and his stepsister, Beverly Bruce of Sun City, Ariz.

At Alfred's request there will be no funeral service or calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

David P. Christian

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — David Paul Christian, 62, lifelong resident of South New Berlin, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 31, 2003, at his home.

Dave was born May 14, 1941, in Norwich, the son of Donald and Ellamae (Palmer) Christian.

Following his education in the South New Berlin schools, he began work as a machine operator for the Norwich Shoe Co. In 1991, he gained employment with Mead Westvaco in Sidney as a general production labor assistant, and was still working for the company at the time of his death.

Very active and dedicated to the South New Berlin Fire Department, of which he was a member for over 40 years, Dave had held several offices within the department and had held the office of fire chief on two separate occasions — from 1984-1987 and again from 1990 through the end of 1991.

He was an avid bowler who had bowled for many years in the Town and Country League as well as in several other leagues.

On April 11, 1964, in South New Berlin, Dave married Anna Mae Burk.

Above all else, he will be remembered as a true family man who especially enjoyed his grandkids.

Dave is survived by his wife, Ann of South New Berlin; his father, Donald Christian of South New Berlin; his children, Teresa Pope and her husband, Jeffery, of Mount Upton, Troy Christian and his wife, Kelly, of South New Berlin, and Kevin Christian and his wife, Robin, also of South New Berlin; his grandchildren, Tyler and Kelsey Pope, and Harlie Anne, Hunter, Breanna and Kayla Christian; his sisters, Mary Lee Meyers and her husband, Kenneth, of South New Berlin, and Cynthia Ann Christian of Vienna, Va. Dave is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Kathy Burk of New Berlin; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of good friends.

Dave was predeceased by his mother, Ellamae Christian; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald W. and Mary Lou Christian; and his grandchildren, Katrena Pope, David Randall Christian and Jordan J. Christian.

Funeral services for Dave will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mount Upton.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Members of the South New Berlin Fire Department will conduct memorial services at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Rufus B. Perkins

LEBANON, Ohio — Rufus B. Perkins, 84, formerly of Hoag Road, passed away on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in the Otterbein Retirement Community in Lebanon, Ohio.

Born July 18, 1919, in New Berlin, he was the son of Byron and Marguerite (Meckel) Perkins. He was a 1938 graduate of New Berlin High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Colgate University in 1942.

Rufus served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge from active service in 1945, he worked for the former Velvet Ice Cream and later ran the grocery story on Division Street. For many years, Rufus owned and operated his own vending machine business. He later worked for the Canasawacta Country Club, retiring in 1995.

Rufus loved walking and hiking. He had walked the Finger Lakes Trail and climbed many of the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. He and Jennie, his dog, walked "all over" Chenango County together.

Rufus enjoyed woodworking and antiques as well as building model airplanes. He also loved playing golf with his family and friends. He was particularly proud of his volunteer work at the Our Daily Bread food pantry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and also enjoyed his work on the Hospice Geranium Sale.

On Sept. 9, 1944, he married Eleanore Oates, who died on Sept. 13, 1961.

On March 9, 1963, in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, he married Florence "Snobie" Westover. Snobie died on March 5, 1996.

Rufus is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and Steve Bernardi of Norwich, Maureen and Richard Collins of Victor, and Amy and Graeme Tosh of Mason, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Antoinette Perkins of Norwich, and Edward and Holly Pearsall of Newport; 11 grandchildren, Carrie and Matthew Bernardi, Courtney Fisher, Christina Collins, Kyle and Emily Tosh, Heather Pulver, Amber and Michael Perkins, Aaron and Ashley Pearsall; a brother, Ruso Perkins of New Berlin; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services for Rufus will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Glenn Mahaffey, rector, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Andrew's Cemetery in New Berlin.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in memory of Rufus may be made to the Our Daily Bread food pantry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Hospice of Chenango County or to the SPCA.

Vernon E. Butts

SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Vernon Eugene Butts, 93, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 24, 1910, in East Springfield, the son of Fred and Bernice (Frost) Butts.

He married Bernice Rathbun on May 3, 1940, in Castleton-On-Hudson. She predeceased him on Dec. 17, 1996.

He was a veteran of World War II in the United States Army Corps European Theater.

He worked at Spaulding Farm as groundskeeper for the Clark Foundation until his retirement after 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann and her husband, Richard Crain of Ilion, Susan Davis of Springfield Center, and Sally Dowling of Charlotte, N.C.; four sons, Robert Butts of Kutztown, Pa., George and his wife, Diane Butts of Springfield Center, Mike and his wife, Janet Butts of Cherry Valley, and Ricky Butts of Springfield Center; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred Butts of Springfield Center; sisters, Dorothy Famulare of Fly Creek, and Gladys Pierce of The Meadows; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife; parents, Fred and Bernice Butts; and several brothers and sisters, Donald Butts, Harmon Butts, Arthur Butts, Mary Fassett, Lucia Nausbaum, Ethel VanWinkler, Catherine Richards and Florence Butts.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Spring burial will take place in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Contributions in Mr. Butts' memory may be made to the First Responders, Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
