Mahlon F. Davis

BAINBRIDGE — Mahlon F. Davis, 71, of Bainbridge passed away at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on Jan. 2, 2004.

He was born Sept. 2, 1932, son of the late Arthur and Carrie (Morris) Davis in Otego.

Mahlon served his country in the United States Air Force for five years.

He married Regina "Jean" Albert on April 28, 1973, in Bainbridge.

Mr. Davis was a postal carrier for the village of Sidney when he retired. He was a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge, an avid bowler and golfer.

Mahlon was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jean Davis, Bainbridge; three sons and daughters-in-law, Darrel Davis, Greensboro, S.C., Robert J. and Lisa Davis, Missouri City, Texas, and Christopher and Bridget Davis, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Rick Baker, Boca Raton, Fla., and Sherri and Dave Newsom, Tampa, Fla.; two brothers and sister-in-law, John and Marjorie Davis, Zephyrhills, Fla., and Clair Davis, Unadilla; sister, Jean Frasier, Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Meagan Baker, Sydney Davis, Tyler and Alexis Newsom, Joshua, Sara and Robert Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

Mahlon is also predeceased by a brother, Morris; and sister, Marian Krauss.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Delaware Valley Humane Society or the Sidney Elks Lodge.

Roy Oehlers

FLEISCHMANNS — Roy Oehlers, 88, of Fleischmanns, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1915, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Edward and Olga (Krantz) Oehlers.

Roy was employed as a purchaser for Macy's Department Store in New York City. He made his home in Fleischmanns for the past several years.

Roy is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Roy M. and Carol Oehlers of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; and friend of 54 years, Jerry Casella of Fleischmanns.

Services will be held at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park in Toledo, Ohio. Burial will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Sally J. Isbell

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Sally J. Isbell, 70, of Hartwick Heights Trailer Park, Cooperstown, died Friday evening, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Sept. 16, 1933, in St. George, Maine, a daughter of Philip N. and Audrey (McCormack) Hupper.

She married Harold L. Isbell on June 21, 1954. He died on May 31, 1994.

Raised in Maine, she graduated from high school and became employed as a secretary. She spent most of her life, though, devoted to raising and caring for her family. In later years, she was employed by Old Camp Bank and as a home health aide for Kelly Services in Grand Rapids, Mich., retiring in 1985. In 2000, she came to live with her daughter, Karen Smith, in Cooperstown.

Sally is survived by two daughters, Karen A. Smith of Cooperstown and Sandra R. Vandentoorn of Grand Rapids, Mich.; one son, Christopher L. Isbell, and his wife, Melanie of Marne, Mich.; one foster son, John Biggs, his companion, Sherri, and their son, Chance of Michigan; two granddaughters, Beth Vandentoorn and Cheryl Smith; three sisters, Karen Scherzi of Rochester, and Doreen Stanley and Theo Hill of Maine; and three brothers, Jerry, Alton and Neil Hupper, all of Maine.

Services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, National Center, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas, 75231 or the Humane Society of Kent County, 3077 Wilson Drive, Walker, MI 49544.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Stanley Effner

WORCESTER — Stanley "Stan" Effner, 65, of Worcester passed away on Jan. 3, 2004, at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1938, the son of Harold James and Eileen (McLock) Effner in Kingston.

He married Carol Paulin on Aug. 10, 1980, in Kingston.

Stan served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1961. He was employed as a mason and carpenter until his retirement.

Stan raced stock cars on various tracks in New York state for many years and was also a stunt driver for Joey Chitwood. Stan was an avid Jets and Mets fan. He also enjoyed NASCAR. He enjoyed socializing with his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and going on road trips.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, of Worcester; two sons, Bill Effner and his companion, Renee Bilby, and Bo Effner, both of Worcester; three daughters, Ginger Worden and her companion, Robert Quackenbush, of Laurens, Brenda and Charles Hulbert of Laurens, and Donna and Henry Robinson of Worcester. He is also survived by one sister, Dawn Russell and her husband, Garvin, of Glasco; one brother, Gerald Effner of Zolfo Springs, Fla.; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Stan also played a very special part in the raising of Fawn Houghton of Schenevus. His beloved dog, Maggie, will also miss him.

His father, Harold Effner and his mother, Eileen (McLock) Effner; and a sister, Joan Bush, predeceased him.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Allison, Ana Marie, Sharon and Grant from Hospice.

At Stan's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Relatives and friends are requested to join the family in a "Celebration of Life" which will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in the Laurens American Legion Hall, Laurens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Regional Cancer Center, Associate Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 in Stan's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Elizabeth Solloway

SHERBURNE — Elizabeth Louise (Kraut) Solloway, 83, of the Pratt Newton Home, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

She was born in Detroit, Mich., on June 13, 1920, a daughter of Fred G. and Clara L. (Syfan) Kraut.

She had lived for 13 years in Jamaica, where she graduated from Jamaica High School in June 1937. She later attended Oneonta Normal School and earned her bachelor's degree in education from SUNY Oneonta in July 1963.

On July 1, 1939, in Oneonta, she married Gilbert W. Solloway, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Solloway was a member of the United Church of Christ, Sherburne; acted as secretary for the S-E Teachers Association, taught Sunday school for 26 years at Victoria Congregational Church, Jamaica, and River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.

Elizabeth had a great love not only for her family but also for flowers; she also enjoyed watching and attending local sporting events. Mrs. Solloway taught kindergarten for 18 years in Smyrna schools (SECS) until her retirement.

Surviving are her four sons and daughters-in-law, Fredric W. and Miriam Solloway of Maryland, Gilbert J. and Wanita Solloway of Oneonta, Raymond N. and Christy Solloway of Duanesburg, and Russell J. and Shelly Solloway of Sherburne; a brother, Charles F. Kraut of Saugerties and Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma and Carl Schurenstedt of North Salem, and Helen Mae and James Pellerite of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited and may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, from the United Church of Christ, Sherburne.

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Contributions may be made to the Sherburne Emergency Squad, Sherburne, NY 13460.

Ruth M. Ireland

UNADILLA — Ruth M. Ireland, 88, of Crane Hill Road, Unadilla, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at her residence.

She was born March 16, 1915, in Unadilla, the daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Rhinehart Davis.

Ruth married Wallace E. Ireland, Dec. 31, 1974, in Tampa, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, Wallace E. Ireland, of Unadilla; daughter, Rosalie Northrup of Sidney; two grandsons, Richard and Robert Backus of Sidney; granddaughter and her husband, Paula and William Hoffman of Gilbertsville, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Robert Backus, and Amber and Cassie Hoffman; great-great-grandson, Alexander Backus; son-in-law, William Lash of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Davis of Sidney and Marguerite Ireland of Vestal; three nephews, John and Gerald Hendrickson, and Woodrow Davis; and two nieces, Dorothy Roehl and Marlene Sanchez.

Ruth was predeceased by her first husband, Richard Benedict; daughter, Barbara Lash; two brothers, Lloyd and John Lynn Davis; two sisters, Alta Freeman and Edith Eighmey; and son-in-law, Paul Northrup.

Funeral and committal services were at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiated.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at a later date.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Unadilla Emergency Squad, Unadilla.

Emma Shackelton

WALTON — Emma J. Shackelton, 87, of Lower Loomis Brook, Walton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a short illness.

Mrs. Shackelton was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Trout Creek, the daughter of Sherman and Mareah Cummings Wilcox, and lived in the Walton area her entire life.

On Dec. 24, 1934, she married Glenn S. Shackelton Sr. He died Dec. 4, 2002.

She was employed as a Scintilla inspector at Bendix Corp. in Sidney. She also assisted her husband in the operation of her family dairy farm. She was a member of the Trout Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn S. and Doug Brown of Truth Or Consequences, N.M., and Mareah E. and Dick Allen; two sons, Glenn S. and Mickey Shackelton and Ben L. and Colleen Shackelton, all of Walton; one sister, Georgianna Merwin of Trout Creek; two brothers, Charles Wilcox of Watertown, and Arthur "Bob" Wilcox of Port Orange, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Laura Hoag.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions, in Emma's memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Central New York, Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of one's choice. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.

C. Gladys Seinfeld

DELHI — C. Gladys Salzberg Seinfeld, 88, a longtime Newburgh resident, formerly of Delhi, passed away Thursday night, Jan. 1, 2004, at Elant of Newburgh, where she had been residing for the past two years.

The daughter of Clarence W. and Alice J. (Brownell) Moscrip, she was born Dec. 26, 1915, on Irish Hill, Delhi (Town of Meredith), where she spent her early life, receiving her education at Delaware Academy.

Twice widowed, she was married to Harry Salzberg and, after his death, Sidney Seinfeld.

Gladys lived for more than 50 years in Newburgh, where she was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was employed as a secretary at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, until her retirement.

Surviving are four nieces, Marcia and Dawn Wheeler of Oneonta, Sandra Wheeler of Boston, and Donna Braun, of Annandale, Va.; a nephew, David Moscrip of Matthews, N.C.; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Winifred Mitchell, Mildred Elliott and Ruth Wheeler; and two brothers, Clyde and Roscoe Moscrip.

Friends are invited to call Thursday morning, Jan. 8, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where services will be conducted 11 a.m. by her pastor, the Rev. William St. John. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1 Owens Road, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
