Anne V. Marino

ONEONTA — Anne V. Marino, 93, of Oneonta passed away on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 2, 1910, in Oneonta, the daughter of Frank and Jennie (Rosetta) Marino.

For many years Anne worked for Angellotti Brothers as a bookkeeper.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Rosary Society.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Paul Marino of Oneonta, Frank Marino of Syracuse, Albert and Ronald Marino of Oneonta, Rosalie "Dolly" Angellotti of Oneonta, Mary Stanton of Cato, Veronica Marino of Oneonta, and Dolores Colone of Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Karl Marino, Tom Marino, and Ralph Marino, who was killed in action in World War II.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no public visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elizabeth Beckwith

NEW BERLIN — Elizabeth J. (Betty) Beckwith, 70, formerly of New Berlin, Oxford and Grace View Manor Apartments of Norwich, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 4, 2004, in the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin.

Born in Oxford on Feb. 20, 1933, Betty was the daughter of Eugene and Mildred (Potter) Perkins. She grew up in the Oxford and McDonough areas where she attended their local schools.

On March 3, 1950, she married William Beckwith, who passed away Jan. 11, 1990.

In her early years, Betty worked for the Norwich Knitting Mill and the Norwich Shoe Company, then began her association with Simmond's Precision and its successor, Unison, from which she retired as a quality inspector in 1997.

Betty and her husband, Bill, had also owned and operated a farm on the Wells Road for several years, and had made their home in New Berlin for 42 years where they owned and operated Bill's Auction House. During this time, she became acquainted with many people and, in her travels all over the United States, would run into people she knew.

Betty is survived by her children, Nancy Clark and her husband, Kevin of Edmeston, William Beckwith and his wife, Robin, of New Berlin, Mary Swayze of Smyrna, Dennis Beckwith and his wife, Cheryl, of Edmeston, and Joy Corey of Newark Valley; her grandchildren, Bart, April, Brandon, Jennifer, Kevin Jr., Tammie, Rich and Ricky Clark, Nathan and Cady Beckwith, Jamie, Joanne and Jenna Swayze, Christopher, J.T., and Chelsea Beckwith, and Liza Corey; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Janice Bonafield of Richfield Springs; her brothers, Elmer Perkins and his wife, Gloria, of West Winfield, and Richard Perkins and his wife, Ethel, of South New Berlin; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Perle and Alice Beckwith of Norwich; and her son-in-law, Mike Swayze of Smyrna. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Betty will be held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Beverly Butler will officiate. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace View Manor Apts., 88 Calvary Drive, Norwich, NY 13815 or to Chase Memorial Nursing Home, One Terrace Heights, New Berlin, NY 13411.

Emily G. Crandall

SIDNEY — Emily G. (Waterman) Crandall of Sidney passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 3, 2004, at 84, surrounded by her family.

Emily was born on Sept. 10, 1919, in Richfield Springs, and was the daughter of Mr. Alan Waterman and Mrs. Ruth (Keno) Waterman.

She married Clesson "Bump" Crandall on Sept. 15, 1937, in Richfield Springs.

Emily was a homemaker and seamstress, who enjoyed hunting, camping, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She was called "Gramma" by most who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Clesson, of Sidney; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathleen Crandall of Cherry Valley; a daughter and son-in-law, Leona and John Olson of Sidney; a brother, Vanness Waterman of Farmville, Va. Emily loved to spend time with her 11 grandchildren, Aaron Runion and his wife, Suzanne, of Ontario, Jennifer Goodspeed and her husband, Noel, of Sidney, Tyler John Crandall of Walton, Shannon Kilmer and her husband, Joseph, of Walton, Spring West and her husband, David, of Oneonta, Tiffany Crandall of Milford, Megan Crandall of Springfield, Christopher Crandall and Brittany Crandall of Cherry Valley, Jeffrey Olson and Matthew Olson of Sidney. She also had several great-grandchildren.

Emily was predeceased by both of her parents, and a son, Frederick.

There are no calling hours.

Emily will be laid to rest at the Richfield Springs Cemetery. A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Donations may be made in her memory to Catskill Area Hospice.

Burial arrangements were made by Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

George B. Decker

OCALA, Fla. — George B. Decker Jr., passed away at his home in Ocala, Fla., on Dec. 30, 2003, after a valiant battle with cancer. His family was at his side.

He was born in Rockroyal, June 17, 1939, the son of the late George B. Decker Sr. and Claudia K. Backus. He spent his childhood in and around the Rockroyal Cannonsville area attending school in Rockroyal and Deposit.

He married Jean Mills in Merrickville in December 1956.

He was a Marine Corps veteran and worked in Del Met in Walton and Bendix in Sidney, now Amphenol, as a punch press operator. In 1964, he relocated his family to Summerfield, Fla., where he worked at various jobs until his retirement in 2001.

He is survived by two sons, Roy of Ocala, Fla., and Ben of Summerfield, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Roberson and her husband, Donald, from Ocala, and Sharon from Bellview, Fla. Also surviving are four brothers, Arthur of South New Berlin, Warren and his wife, Jane, of Ocala, Lawrence and his wife, Janice (Muffy), of Bainbridge and Lewis and his wife, Helen, (Terri) of Abingdon, Md.; three sisters, Thea Green of Sidney, Ruth Marshall and friend Harry Nichols of DeLancey and Elaine Parker and her husband, Scott, of Morris; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two children, daughter, Christina, and son, Roger.

Funeral services were held in Bellview, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.

Fred A. Krieg

OCALA, Fla. — Fred A. Krieg, 87, of Ocala, Fla., died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at his home.

He was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Washington, D.C. He was a United States Army World War II veteran, serving in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

He was a retired lithographer and owner of Krieg-Taylor Lithograph Company of Hyattsville, Md. After selling his business, he and his wife retired to Ocala, Fla., in 1976. He was a member of Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church.

His lifelong interest in automobiles led to the restorations of numerous Model T and Model A Fords. He was a fine metalworker and a good craftsman and he made many car, truck and horse drawn wagon models to the delight of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Irene E. Krieg; son, Thomas Krieg and his wife, Laura, and their daughter, Chelsea Krieg of Milford; son, the Rev. Richard H. Krieg and his wife, Theresa, and their daughters, Bethany and Kaitlyn Krieg, of Surfside Beach, S.C.

He was buried in the Florida National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., with full military honors.

Jane M. Langer

STAMFORD — Jane Matalavage Langer died peacefully in her sleep with her husband at her side on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, after a long illness.

Jane was born in Margaretville, on Nov. 25, 1953. She graduated from Downsville Central School in 1971, and went on to receive a degree in Community Planning from Wilkes College. During her senior year in college she worked for HUD as an intern, following the serious flooding in Wilkes Barre, Pa.

After college she worked in community and economic development for Delaware County. She was then employed by Catskill Rail Committee in the development of the railroad and the seven towns along the railroad corridor in upper Delaware County.

She then founded the Western Catskill Community Revitalization Council (WCCRC) headquartered in Stamford, here she continued working in community and economic development for upper Delaware and lower Schoharie Counties.

She is survived by her husband, Paul, of Gilboa; their two sons, Jonathon of Jacksonville, N.C., and Matthew of Gilboa; and her stepdaughter, Janalee Dwojakowski, and her husband, Bill, of Schenectady; her parents, Tom and Betty Matalavage of Gilboa; a sister, Joan Matalavage of Rotterdam; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Sue, of State College, Pa.; three nieces and one nephew.

Donations may be made in Jane's memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society National Upstate New York Chapter, 457 State St., Binghamton, NY 13901.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Jefferson United Methodist Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Clifford Speenburgh

BLOOMVILLE — Clifford Speenburgh, 81, of Bloomville died Jan. 3, 2004, at Delaware Valley Hospital of Walton, due to complications of pneumonia.

He was a resident of Roscoe Community Nursing Home of Roscoe.

He was born June 13, 1922, in Hunter, the son of Alfred and Dora (Hinckley) Speenburgh.

He married Bertha Coddington Speenburgh, who passed away April 24, 2002.

A lifelong dairy farmer he most recently worked for Prospect Farms from which he retired in 1986. He was a veteran of World War II.

His children, Janice Irene Birkett and son-in-law Joel Birkett, Walter Allen and his wife, Sharon, Clifford Jr., Howard and Robert; and a sister, Goldie Osborn, survive him. Several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews also survive him.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Delores Louise, who died in 1964; his grandson, Daniel; sisters, Elsie Higgins, Glades Burkhart; brothers, Claude, Leonard, Walter, Clayton; and half-brothers, Theren Fischer and Bill Fischer.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes pastor officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bloomville Fire Department, Bloomville, NY 13739.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Sophie L. Swiphas

EARLVILLE — Sophie Leveda Swiphas, 106 years old, of East Main Street, Earlville, entered into eternal rest on Sunday evening, Jan. 4, 2004, in her home. She had the comfort of her loving son at her side.

She was born on April 14, 1897, in Richfield Springs, daughter of the late Elmer and Eva Goddard Sponburgh.

A lifelong area resident she was raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield Springs High School.

Sophie had owned and operated a candy store in Richfield Springs until 1946.

On July 5, 1943, she married Sidney Swiphas in Erie, Pa. Theirs was a loving and devoted union of 58 years. They resided in Richfield Springs until the 1950s when they moved to Earlville. Mr. Swiphas preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2001.

Surviving is her son, Donald R. Mason of Earlville.

Besides her parents and husband, Sidney, a brother, Roy Sponburgh, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be held in Lakeview Cemetery later this spring at a time to be announced.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Earlville Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Minnie Burton

WESTFORD — Minnie Burton, 88, passed away peacefully, Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at her son's home in Westford.

Minnie was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Rushville, Neb., the daughter of the late Henry and Theodora (Lamus) Peeters.

She attended the Westford Public School, and married Charles Burton on Oct. 16, 1935.

Minnie was a farmer most of her life. She retired from Eden Park Nursing Home, Cobleskill, as a dietitian's aide, where she worked for 11 years. She was also a well-known waitress and cook at Ardy's Dairy Bar and Waltz Restaurant both in Worcester.

Minnie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Westford, and the Westford Bowling League. She loved to play bingo and work in her garden.

She is survived by her three sons, Charles (Sonny) and Shirley Burton of Schenevus, Henry and Myrna Burton and Leslie and Rocheal Burton, all of Westford; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marion Peeters of Westford; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, on Feb. 28, 1977; two brothers, Herbert and Martin; and two sisters, Anne Yale and Theodora Cook.

Calling hours will be held at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at Westford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beverly Furey, pastor, officiating, with calling hour held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Westford Cemetery.

In loving memory of Minnie, contributions may be made to the Westford First Responders, PO Box 187, Westford, NY 13488.

A sincere thank you to Deborah DelVecchio for the special love and care she showed our mother and to Jason, Shannon Duncan, Leslie and Charity for being there and caring for their grandmother.

Minnie's smiling face and generosity for all that she gave to everyone will be dearly missed.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.
