Mildred J. Kenney

COOPERSTOWN — Mildred J. Kenney, 79, of 50 Walnut St., Cooperstown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.

She was born May 15, 1924, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Harold and Lillian (Nelson) Anderson.

Mildred married James R. Kenney on June 10, 1951. He predeceased her on Oct. 3, 1972.

She worked for many years for the Office of the Aging in Cooperstown. Prior to that, she worked for O.F.O., Bassett Healthcare, as a nurse's aide, and for offices in Manhattan.

Mildred is survived by her children, Pamela Bornholz and her husband, Howard of Carmel, Susan Antonowicz of Cooperstown, and Kevin Kenney of Toddsville; three grandchildren, Michael, Kelley and Jennifer; many nieces and nephews; her family friends; and her very good neighbors.

Mildred's family would like to thank the Public Health Nurses, the ICU staff at Bassett Healthcare, and the Cooperstown Emergency Squad for their wonderful and attentive care and services they provided.

Calling hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. with the family in attendance Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, with memorial services at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Frank V. Havrish

STAMFORD — Frank V. Havrish Jr., 48, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, he was born in Cobleskill on Nov. 28, 1955, the son of Frank and Helen Whispell Havrish.

Frank worked on local dairy farms for many years. He was an avid hunter who also enjoyed caring for his house plants and baking. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, where he participated in the church choir.

His father predeceased him.

He is survived by his mother, Helen, of Jefferson; his eight brothers and sisters, Robert Havrish of Haverstraw, JoAnn and Sam Smith of Sidney, William and Linda Havrish of Jefferson, George Havrish of Oneonta, Mary Ann and Gary Kitson of Jacksonville, Fla., Suzanne and Mark Johnson of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Richard and Cindy Havrish of Jefferson, and Joyce and Brian Ormsbee of Harpersfield; 11 nieces and nephews, Sammy and Mathew Smith, Nicolette and Katrina Havrish, Brittany McClain, Cory and Sierra Kitson, Austin Johnson, Tracey and David Lee, and Andrew Ormsbee.

Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford with the Rev. Patricia Shafer officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Charles H. Costine

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Charles Harold "Chuck" Costine, 67, of Toms River, N.J., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Community Medical Center after a courageous battle with Leukemia.

Born in Jamesburg, N.J., son of the late Pauline and J. Harold Costine, he grew up and attended school in Jersey City. He later resided in Keansburg where he worked for GM in Linden.

He and his wife, Joyce later lived in Highlands and then moved to Navesink in 1973. They lived there until 1987 when the family moved to New Berlin, and in 2001 returned to New Jersey.

Chuck lovingly served his family, friends, community and country. As a young man he served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. He supported his family as a heavy equipment mechanic.

He showed his dedication to his church and community by coaching softball at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Highlands. He was a member of the vestry of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin, where he also volunteered his time with the local food pantry and he built the platform for the church's new organ.

He was a camping enthusiast and enjoyed this activity with his wife and close friends.

Chuck's most treasured accomplishment was raising his nine children. He loved to be surrounded by his family and many dear friends. Simply put, Chuck was a selfless man, always putting others' needs before his own.

He leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of 35 years, Joyce (nee Rast); his nine children, Dawn Tedesco of New Berlin, David Costine of Locust, N.J., Carol Ann Kozak of Keansburg, N.J., Betty Doloughty of Cooperstown, Darren Costine and wife Dorothy of Chester, Va., Charles (Chicky) Costine of New Berlin, Annette MacLeod and husband Kelton of New Berlin, Mark Costine and wife Terri of North Middletown, N.J., and Andrew Costine and wife Staci of Somerset, N.J. Also surviving are his 20 grandchildren, Christina, Brenda, Michael, Marybeth, Angela, James, Andrea, Derrick, Theresa, Brian, John, Heather, Keith, Tarra, Mellissa, Amanda, Joseph, Steven, Justin and Jessica; along with three great-grandchildren; and many other close family members and special friends.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Episcopal Church of St. Raphael the Archangel, 1520 Route 88, Brick, N.J. 08724 at 11 a.m.

Internment will be at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, N.J., at a future date to be set in the spring.

A memorial service will also be held in the spring at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Episcopal Church of St. Raphael the Archangel in Brick are appreciated.

Helen A. Riggs

ITHACA — Helen A. (nee Dibble) Riggs, 82, of Ithaca died after a short illness on Jan. 13, 2004.

She was born to Mildred (All) and Joseph Dibble of Hobart, on April 24, 1921, into a large loving clan of hard working Delaware County dairy farmers. She was raised with 10 siblings and over three-dozen foster children that were brought into the Dibble family over several decades.

She is survived by her great-grandchildren, Emily and Aaron Tugaw and Kristine and Patrick Furgison; grandchildren, Kevin and (Sharon) and Kelly Riggs and William John Bell and Kerry-Jo and (Shawn) Furgison, Mark, Shawn, and Curt Tugaw, and Jessica and (Daniel) Greenwood; children, Neal and (Patricia) Riggs of Canton, Beverly and (John) Tugaw of Liverpool, and Deborah and (John) Homa Jr. of Ithaca; brothers, Leonard and (Caryl) Dibble of Bloomsburg, Arnold and (Ruth) Dibble of Hobart, Fred and (Genie) Dibble of Kirkville, and George and (Eileen) Bronson of Delmar; sisters, Wilma and (the late Horace) Miller of Stamford, Georgia and (the late Marshall) Worden of Stamford, Leota and (William) Wright of Jackson, Mich., and Arlene Dibble of Hobart; and sisters-in-law, Jane Riggs of Ithaca, Dorothy Dibble and Frances Darrah. She had many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her grandson, Keith Riggs; husband, Ernest M. Riggs Jr.; brothers, Chauncey Dibble of Evans Mills, and Ted Dibble of Hobart; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and (Amanda) Riggs of Ithaca, and Miriam and (Harold) Wafler of Florida.

Mrs. Riggs was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and had been a nurse's aide at Tompkins County Hospitals for over 25 years. Her care and concern of others are but a few of the admirable qualities she possessed.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with funeral services Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Lansing Funeral Home, Inc.

Burial in Frear Memorial Park will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospicare, 172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY or a charity of your choice.

Agnes I. Michaels

COOPERSTOWN — Agnes Isabelle Michaels, 91, a retired college professor, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the Avante Nursing Home in Melbourne, Fla.

Aggie was born on Feb. 3, 1912, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Howard N. and Edna (Potter) Michaels.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Howard, J. Gordon and Paul; and two sisters, Mary Vandenburg and Ruth Mumford.

Aggie leaves five nieces and five nephews.

Graduating from Cortland in 1938, with a BS in physical education, Aggie continued her education with a masters from New York University and her Ed.D. from the University at Buffalo. She was also named in Who's Who in American Women.

During the time after Cortland, Aggie put her education on hold and from 1941-1944 served her country in the American Red Cross as a USO recreational and social director in India. She was also the recipient of the American Red Cross Life Saving award in 1929.

Aggie's teaching career spanned 41 years. She was very active throughout her teaching days even finding the time to author many articles during her tenure as director of Health and Physical Education at the State University College at Fredonia. Her unique teaching style affected many students' lives in a most positive way.

Aggie's joy of life endeared her to her students who frequently visited her after her retirement in both Florida and New York. Her home was always a welcoming place for family and visitors.

Aggie's hobbies were many and varied from photography to painting, fishing, jewelry making, camping, and world traveling. She was an and supporter to her family. While Aggie lived in many places her heart belonged to Cooperstown at Chota Peg with her beloved dog, Friskie.

Services will be held in the early summer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Emma L. Moore

STAMFORD — Emma Lillian Moore, 98, formerly of Grand Gorge, Stamford and Maryland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

She was born Nov. 11, 1905, in Pine Hill, the daughter of Ara and Cora Marie (Hannah) Misner.

She married John Henry Moore Jr. on Nov. 24, 1923. Emma worked on the Board of Water Supply in Grand Gorge during construction of the Gilboa Dam. She also worked at the Community Hospital in Stamford.

Emma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary (Earl B. Dudley Post) in Grand Gorge. She was also a member of the Abigail Harper Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution as well as the Colonel Harpers Grange in Harpersfield. She was a member of the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens.

Emma enjoyed gardening, crocheting, genealogy and fishing in her spare time.

Two daughters and their spouses, Teresa and Albert Vamosy Sr. of Stamford, and Patricia "Peg" and Frank MacCracken Sr. of Maryland survive her; she is also survived by 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Richard T. Moore and a daughter, Shirley E. White predeceased Emma. Four sisters also predeceased her.

Funeral services for Emma L. Moore will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Word of Faith Church, Maryland, with the Rev. Frank MacCracken Sr. and the Rev. Frank MacCracken Jr., officiating.

Friends may call at the Word of Faith Church, Maryland, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Spring internment will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abigail Harper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, care of Teresa Vamosy, 400 Odell Lake Road, Stamford, NY 12167, in Emma's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Egbert B. Ives

EAST BRANCH — Egbert B. Ives, 73, of East Branch died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, in Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1930, in Hancock, the son of George Bassett and Carrie (Merwin) Ives.

He married Lois Hickman on Aug. 12, 1962, in Roscoe. She predeceased him on March 6, 1996.

He was a blaster for Tunnel and Dam Construction. He was also the owner of the Alibi Inn in Centerville, and worked for the Delaware County Sheriff's Department.

He was retired from the United States Navy and Air Force and was a member of TREA (The Retired Enlisted Association), a member of the American Legion Post 0167, Downsville, VFW, Post 270, Downsville, Walton Lodge 0559 F&AM. He was a member of the Delaware County Republican Committee, and was an assessor for the Town of Hancock, a lifetime member of the East Branch Fire Department. He also was an avid golfer and an avid race car fan.

He is survived by two daughters, Kelly and Glenn Banker, East Branch, and Camy Ives and fiance Thomas Newman Jr., East Branch; one sister, Mrs. Francis (Lorna) Wormuth, East Branch; four grandchildren, A.J., Kacie, Halle and Sydney; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the chapel, with the Rev. Paul Cicio of the East Branch Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery, Harvard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 or East Branch Ambulance Squad.

Kenneth R. Howe

BAINBRIDGE — Kenneth Robert Howe, 63, of Bainbridge died Jan. 11, 2004, at Wilson Hospital, Johnson City.

He was born Aug. 28, 1940, in Bainbridge. He was the son of Kenneth and Edna (Stanton) Howe. He lived all his life in the Afton and Bainbridge areas.

Early in his working career he ran his own construction company. Later he worked for NYSEG at the Jennison Station for 25 years until he retired in 1995.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish, especially deer hunting in the Adirondacks and fishing on the St. Lawrence River.

Bob is survived by his father, Kenneth and mother, Edna Howe, of Afton; two sons, Alan Howe and wife Hiromi, Panama City, Fla., and Richard Howe and wife Patricia of Bainbridge; two daughters, Melanie Howe of Clinton, and Melissa Howe of Auburn; one sister, Carol Wilber of Afton; one brother, Gary and wife Marion of Afton; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Steven Howe of Bainbridge, and Elizabeth Howe of Norwich; one nephew, Michael Nesbit of Woodgate; and two nieces, Michele Daniels of Pennsylvania, and Carrie Howe of California.

A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring.

Interment will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in Bob's name.
