Robert E. Atkinson

UNADILLA — Robert E. Atkinson, 80, of Old Hill Road, Unadilla, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born April 1, 1923, in Norwich, the son of the late Fred and Maude Mattice Atkinson.

On June 25, 1955, he married Marjorie Hewell in Montrose, Pa. From 1948 until his retirement in 1976, Bob was employed by the E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hewell Atkinson, of Unadilla; four grandchildren, Sharene Jones, Tricia Humphreys, Erika Wilson and Leslie Wilson, all of Virginia; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Wilson of Virginia; sister, Betty Hamilton of Sidney; great-granddaughter, Haley Ann Humphreys of Virginia. Bob is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Richard E. Atkinson, five brothers, Kenneth, Frederick, Otto, Donald, LeRoy, and a sister, Dorothy predeceased him.

At his request, memorial services will be private at the convenience of his family.

There will no calling hours, but friends are invited to call at his home at their convenience.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838 if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Elisabeth Post

COOPERSTOWN — Ms. Elisabeth Post, 94, died Jan. 13, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born in Hobart, on Oct. 14, 1909, a daughter of Clarence and Bertha (Sturges) Post.

A resident of Delaware County most of her life, she graduated from Hobart High School and then State Normal School (now SUCO.)

She taught school for 36 years, 11 of those years were in one-room schools in Delaware County. For 19 years she taught in Fort Plain Central School. Elisabeth has been a member of the Township United Methodist Church since 1919.

She is survived by a brother, John Post of Punta Gorda,

Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Edith Slack of Vergennes, Vt.; and two brothers, Donald and Everett Post of Hobart.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Township United Methodist Church in Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Elizabeth Quigley

GARFIELD, N.J. — Elizabeth (Grece) Quigley, 82, of Garfield, N.J., formerly of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1921, in Jersey City.

She lived in Garfield for the last 16 years. Prior to that, she lived in Hasbrouck Heights.

She was employed as a registered nurse with various hospitals for 55 years before her retirement in 1995.

She was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church of Hasbrouck Heights, and a member of the Hasbrouck Heights Leisure Club.

Elizabeth is survived by her sons, James Quigley and Richard Quigley, both of Davenport; her daughter, Patricia Hoyle of Nederland, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Robert L. Quigley, predeceased her in April 1984.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements are by Hennessey-Powell Funeral Home.

Nancy C. Picinich

WALTON — Nancy C. Picinich, 73, formerly of Walton, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, 2004, in the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa., after a short illness.

Mrs. Picinich was born on Aug. 30, 1930, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Margaret Chiusano.

On Feb. 22, 1953, she married Dr. William F. Picinich in Brooklyn. He died on Nov. 27, 2000.

She was a clerk, employed by American Express Airlines and later was an assistant to the Town of Walton Clerk.

Mrs. Picinich was a member of St. John the Baptist Church of Walton and later of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta. She was also member of the Walton Veterans Club Auxiliary of Walton.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, who belonged to the "Greatest Mother, Grandmother and Aunt in the World Club."

She loved spending as much time as possible with her precious grandchildren, and to shop with her "shopping partner" and granddaughter, Ciara.

She is survived by two sons, William J. and Tina Picinich of Walton, and David A. and Leslie Picinich of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Nathan, Ciara, Zachary, Alec and Abigail; one great-grandson, Steven; a brother, Charles Chiusano of Pelham; and one sister, Madeline Bosco, Brooklyn.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, "Doc" Picinich, and her sister, Marie Araneo.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Picinich's memory to St. Jude's Children Hospital or the American Heart Association. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Emma L. Moore

MARYLAND — Emma Lillian Moore, 98, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Moore of Oneonta and Florida; and a son-in-law, Robert White of New Hartford and Florida.

Mary H. Jardine

BOVINA CENTER — Mary H. Jardine, 97, of Bovina Center, a lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully, Thursday night, Jan. 15, 2004, at her home.

The daughter of Charles and Matilda (Ackerley) Hyzer, she was born Jan. 12, 1907, in Andes, and married Raymond B. Jardine in 1934. He died in 1962.

Mary was a 1926 graduate of Hilton Memorial High School, Andes, received teacher certification from Walton Teacher Training Class (1927), Oneonta Normal School (1932), and taught in district schools at Andes, Thompson Hollow, Roxbury, Bramley Mountain, Bovina Center and, for several years, first grade at South Kortright Central School, all while assisting her husband on the family farm.

Long-active in the Bovina community, where she volunteered her time for numerous church and local events, Mary was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and, previously, Bovina Recreation Club; Home Bureau; McClellon Missionary Circle; Senior Citizens, of which she helped initiate and organize the meals program; long-time leader of the Bovina "Happy Hearts" 4-H Club; helped to fabricate the town of Bovina square for the Delaware County quilt, as well as the Bovina town banner and United Nations flag; the New York State Teachers Association, assisting with the friendship committee of the local and Eastern State Association; South Kortright, Delhi and Delaware County Retired Teachers Associations; served on Delaware County Chapter, American Red Cross board of directors; Delaware County Senior Citizens, serving as secretary during its formation and early years, and was recognized as county "Senior Citizen of the Year" in 1976.

Surviving are two daughters, Marian E. Jardine and Martha R. Musgrove, both of Bovina Center; a son, Richard A. Jardine of Utica, nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by brothers, Martin and David Hyzer, and sister, Helen Cappiello.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where services will be conducted at 4 p.m. by her pastor, the Rev. Scott Conrad. Burial will be later in the Bovina Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, or Bovina Emergency Squad, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Herbert Blanchard

ONEONTA — Herbert W. Blanchard of Oneonta died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

A lifelong resident of Oneonta, he was born Jan. 17, 1926, the son of William and Jennie (Roscoe) Blanchard.

He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1943 and was a graduate of Syracuse University.

Herb was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

Herb was an employee of the U.S. post office for 34 years. He served as a carrier desk clerk and retired as superintendent of the mails in January 1981.

Herb married Barbara Ferguson Perry on Oct. 16, 1987, in Oneonta.

He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of Oneonta BPOE Elks 1312.

Herb had been a member of the Cooperstown Community Band for more than 50 years.

In his retirement he enjoyed golfing with his buddies, coffee at McDonald's, crosswords and his Tuesday afternoon support group at the American Legion.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he leaves two daughters, Susan M. Blanchard of Oneonta and Johna Smith and Dan Walsh of Cooperstown, and three grandsons, Jacob, William and Benjamin Smith of Cooperstown. A sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Ralph Nicolson of Queensbury; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Marion Starr of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Louene Ferguson of Inglewood, Calif.; three nieces, Amy Nicolson of Boulder Colo., Ann Lavin of Walton and Kathleen Ceruti of Owego; and two nephews, Craig Nicolson of Portland Ore., and Joseph Lavin, of Vandling, Pa., also survive him

His stepchildren, Laurine and Ted Jennings, Linda Perry and Russell Bauer, Diane Perry-Pleban and Mike and Denise Perry, and stepgrandchildren Scott Thomas, Stephanie Hempstead, Ronald, Katie and Ashley Pleban, Gregory Jennings, Cassie Morales, and Taylor, Meghan and Morgan Perry, also survive him.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, on Sunday, Jan. 25, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor, officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St. Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Blencoe Moore

MIDDLEFIELD — Blencoe Moore, 87, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born May 11, 1916, in the town of Minden, the son of Warner and Celia (Blencoe) Moore.

On May 27, 1941, he married Helen Jean Bush in Walton. She predeceased him in 1998.

Mr. Moore was a dairy farmer. He was a charter member of the Westford Fire Department, member of the Middlefield United Methodist Church, Dairymen's League, Eastern Breeders Association and Farm Bureau.

Survivors include a son, Daniel, and his wife, Nellie; a son, John, and his wife, Theodora; and a daughter, Helen Moore, all of Middle field; a son, Floyd and his wife, Francesca, of Waterford; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Marian McGuire of Latham, Margaret Morris of Cuba and Celia Cockwell of Buena, N.J.; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and sisters-in-law, Judith Martin of Trout Creek and Grace Huff of Walton.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen; sisters, Madaline Moore, Beth Tyler, Beatrice Britian and Marge Oliver; and a grandson, Jay Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, at Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Spring burial will take place in the Westford Cemetery, Westford.

Calling hours will precede the funeral, beginning at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Moore's memory may be made to the Middlefield First Responders, the Dialysis Unit of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown or the United Methodist Church, Middlefield.

Arrangements were entrusted to Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Cecil Mullinex

ONEONTA — Cecil Mullinex of Oneonta died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 17, 1950, to Herbert and Dorothy Conklin Mullinex.

Cecil was an Army veteran, serving two tours of duty with the Engineering Corps in Vietnam, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal.

Cecil worked for the Roscoe Diner as a cook's apprentice while he was able. He was a member of the VFW. Cecil loved to play chess, fish and watch wrestling. He also liked to gamble at the casinos or with groups of friends playing cards. His favorite music was the classic-rock-era sounds, especially Pink Floyd.

Cecil is survived by his brothers, Wilbur Parks of Ulster Heights, Stoddard Parks of Fergusonville, James Mullinex of Roscoe, Herbert Mullinex of Farmington, Va., John and his wife, Jessie Mullinex, of South Royalton, Vt., and Tom and his wife, Donna, of Oneonta; sisters, Elizabeth Matken of Worcester, Margaret and husband, Robert Bathrick, of Pittsfield, and Joanne and son, Angelo Musto, of Roscoe; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Charles Parks and Harold Mullinex.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Bookhout Funeral Home, 157 Main St., Oneonta, with the family present.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Cecil's memory to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
