William S. Reiter

OTEGO — William S. ("Bill") Reiter, M.D., 62, of Otego passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass., after suffering from a series of heart attacks.

Bill was born on May 14, 1941, in Brooklyn, son of Hyman and Sophie Reiter of Brooklyn.

He is survived by his "amor," Reina Reiter; first born, Marissa Proctor, last born, Hillary Reiter; numbers one, two and three sons, respectively, Jonathan Reiter, Gregory Reiter and Hector Reiter; two grandsons, M.C. Proctor and Avi Proctor; his mother, Sophie Reiter; two brothers, Marc ("Chico") Reiter and Elliot ("Lefty") Reiter; in-laws in both families; and several nieces and nephews.

In 1962, Bill earned his bachelor's degree in Biology/Psychology from City University of New York, Brooklyn College. In 1966, he earned his M.D. from the Chicago Medical School, where he earned academic honors and served as treasurer, Class of 1966. From 1966-1967, he completed his internship at UCLA and, from 1969-1970, he completed his general surgery residency at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. Between 1970 and 1973, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles, Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles, and Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, Calif.

In 1967, Bill proudly elected to serve his country by enlisting for active duty during the Vietnam War. Between 1967 and 1969, he served as captain with flying status, performing the duties of General Medical Officer and base psychiatrist at the U.S. Air Force base in Plattsburgh. During this period, he faithfully treated his fellow countrymen who were injured overseas.

From 1974 until 1992, Bill successfully operated a solo orthopaedic practice in Los Angeles, where he treated disadvantaged factory workers injured while on the job. During this period, Bill polished his language skills while treating Spanish-speaking patients. At various times, Bill held staff privileges at several Los Angeles-area hospitals, including Orthopaedic Hospital, California Hospital, Midway Hospital, Westside Hospital, Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, and Beverly Hills Medical Center.

After spending approximately one year living and treating patients in Hobbs, N.M., Bill moved first to Oneonta, then to Otego, where he treated patients from 1994 until 2001, as a physician for Catskill Orthopaedics, P.C. During this period, he held staff privileges at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, and launched a small orthopaedic practice in Walton, at Delaware Valley Hospital. From 2001 until his passing, Bill treated patients exclusively at Delaware Valley Hospital.

Bill loved his family but also loved helping people in need of his medical talents. He expected to continue to serve his community as a physician while caring for his aging mother, spending time with his "amor," attending his number one son's wedding, enjoying his number three son's music gigs and last born's ballet performances, being a grandfather, riding his tractor and motorcycles and simply playing his piano (at which he was quite skilled).

As to his wishes, Bill will be buried at Temple Beth El Cemetery alongside his friend, Joe Raymond, who always made him laugh. The burial, with military honors, will take place at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2004, at Temple Beth El Cemetery in Emmons, and, as to his wishes, the burial will be presided over by Bill's friend, Jane Cook.
