Frederick McGown

COOPERSTOWN — Frederick Hamilton McGown Jr. of Cooperstown died in Vero Beach, Fla., on Jan. 16, 2004.

He was born at the Thanksgiving Hospital, Cooperstown, on Feb. 19, 1916. He was the only child of Frederick Hamilton McGown and Harriet Waller McGown. His mother died when he was 3 years old and his father later married Esther Seabury Conger.

He attended Cooperstown Central School, Andover Academy (1935) and Yale University (1939). He then taught at Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa., where he met his wife, Elizabeth Yeager Davies.

He entered the United States Army in 1943, where he served in the Army Air Corps. Following his discharge he taught at Cooperstown Academy and the Hyde Bay Camp. He returned to Wyoming Seminary until beginning his employment at Northrup Supply in Binghamton and Oneonta. He joined his father as a partner in the McGown Company which later became the Fred McGown Corp. After selling the Fred McGown Corp. to the Bruce Hall Corp., he was employed at the Bruce Hall Corp.

After he retired he became a New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technician, worked for Cooperstown Medical Transport Inc., and volunteered for the Cooperstown Emergency Squad.

For the past five summers, he worked with his daughter, Margaret, at the Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Fred was an Eagle Scout. He served as Mayor of Cooperstown, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Cooperstown, and was on several village committees throughout his lifetime.

He was a charter member of the Cooperstown Lions Club. He was a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department, the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, the Mohican Club, the Cooperstown Country Club, the Leatherstocking Twilight Golf League, the Forty and Eight, the American Legion, the Native Sons of Cooperstown and the Doubleday Dancers. He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown and served on the Board of the Friends of Bassett.

Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Davies McGown; his daughters and their husbands, Margaret McGown and Mark Zeek of Cooperstown, and Lenore and Philip Defliese of Mercer Island, Wash.; and his son, Frederick H. McGown III of Albany; his grandchildren, Elizabeth McGown, David McGown, Emma Zeek Slager, Stephen Zeek, Amanda McGown, William Defliese and Katherine Defliese; and his great-grandchildren, Emily McGown Carson, Tanner Colwell McGown, Sara Slager, and Duncan McGown Clark. He is also survived by his half brothers, David McGown and Seabury McGown.

He was predeceased by his daughter Harriet Waller McGown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in memory of Frederick H. McGown Jr. be made to the Friends of Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, or the First Presbyterian Church Building Maintenance Fund, Cooperstown.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Frederick H. McGown Jr. will be held on Feb. 21, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Lorenzina Pasa

DAVENPORT — Mrs. Lorenzina Pasa, 81 years of age, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, with her family by her side.

She was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Arsie, Italy, the daughter of John and Anna (Lira) DeMarchi.

She married Alexander Pasa on May 25, 1946, in Fergusonville. Mr. Pasa predeceased her on Dec. 9, 1959.

In 1960, Lorie moved to the Davenport area from Manhattan. While living in Manhattan she worked designing World War II model airplanes for the government. She had also worked in a bank.

After moving to Davenport, Lorie graduated with honors from Cobleskill College of Technology and then Oneonta State with a degree in teaching. She was a teacher at Jefferson Central School teaching second grade as well as fourth grade. The children and their education were very important to Lorie. She had also worked at the hospital in Stamford, as well as at Dr. Forman, Sheesley and Solomon's office.

Lorie enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning vegetables from her garden, crocheting, art, and was a wonderful cook and seamstress. But most of all she loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. Lorie was a very caring and giving person and was always lending a hand to those in need. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Lorina and Peter Pedersen of Plattsburgh, and Richard and Gina Pasa of North Harpersfield; her five grandchildren, Michael and Lorie Pedersen of Plattsburgh, and Hailee, Jacob and Logan Pasa of North Harpersfield; her sister and her husband, Lena and Gus Bassani of Davenport; one nephew, Eric Bassani of Alaska; and one niece, Noreen Riley of Oregon.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Burial will be in the spring in the Davenport Cemetery.

Calling hours will be offered on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lorenzina Pasa Scholarship Fund, in care of Jefferson Central School, 1332 State Route 10, Jefferson, NY 12093 in loving memory of Lorenzina Pasa.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frederick Combs

ONEONTA — Frederick Combs, 36, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 22, 1967, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Frederick Gulliver and Christine Conforti.

Fred was employed at Applebee's in Oneonta and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline (Christie) Combs; two daughters, Caroline and Crystal; his parents, Jack and Christine Wagner of Long Island; his brother, Anthony Combs of Long Island; two sisters-in-law, Dawn Dupree Barnes, Matthew Barnes, and Angela Dupree; a brother-in-law, Michael Christie; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Corky Combs; grandmother, Margaret Conforti; and a mother-in-law, Caroline Carollo.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

Burial will be at the Washington Memorial Cemetery in Coram at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Fred to the Mountainview Social Club.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Helen Lawton

VALLEY HEAD, Ala. — Helen Freda Ginther Lawton of Valley Head, Ala., passed away Jan. 6, 2004. She was 77.

Born in St. Mary's, Pa., she was the daughter of Frank and Jessie Stahl Ginther. Prior to moving to Valley Head, she resided in Morris.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; her son, Willard; three brothers, Laverne, Leroy and Francis; and one sister, Grace.

Survivors include daughters Vada of Florida, Linda of New York and Hilda of Washington; sons, Mike, Dick, Fred, Stanley, Jesse, Jerry and Tom, all of Valley Head, and Andy of Florida; sisters Elizabeth Nelson and Vada Liptak of St. Mary's, Pa. and Marie Johnson of Ridgeway, Pa; brothers, Richard and Urban Ginther of St. Mary's; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends survive Helen.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Graveside services were Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Valley Head Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating.

Thomas Foster

EARLVILLE — Thomas Foster Sr., 77, of Earlville, and formerly of the Milford area, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Geneva General Hospital, Geneva.

Tom lived in the Oneonta area for most of his life. He worked construction in Milford and Milford Center for many years. Tom was a member of the American Legion Post 236, Earlville.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas Foster Jr. and William Foster; also a daughter, Bonnie Foster.

Funeral services for Thomas Foster Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church.

A spring burial will take place in Milford Center Cemetery, Milford Center. There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements are with the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Maurice Goodrich

WORCESTER — Maurice E. Goodrich, 84, of Worcester died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at The Meadows after a three-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Worcester, the son of Maurice and Madge (Mabie) Goodrich. Mr. Goodrich served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was self-employed as a carpenter and woodworker for all of his life, working alone and with his son in Worcester. There are many homes and businesses in the area that show his talent.

Mr. Goodrich was a lifelong Worcester area resident. He was a member of the Worcester Fire Department and loved watching movies and listening to music.

From 1947-1957, he moved to Norwalk, Ohio, to work as a movie projectionist.

Mr. Goodrich is survived by four children and their spouses, Jim and Linda Goodrich of Worcester, Maureen and Andrew Christensen of West Winfield, Carol and Vince Fontana of Avondale, Pa., and Suzanne and Ben Gaetano of Newington, Conn.; grandchildren, Jessica Gaske, James (Gig) Goodrich, Katye Goodrich, Philip Christensen, Emily Christensen, Kristin Maroney, Vinnie Fontana, Jim Gaetano, Julie Carter; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jane, in 1982; and his brother, Francis, and sister, Florence.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 155 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding officiating.

Burial will take place at the St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Goodrich to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Alzheimer's Association-NENY, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Main Street, Worcester.

Manford Hempstead

SCOTIA — Manford E. Hempstead, 62, of Scotia and formerly of the Albany area, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, 2004, at the Glendale Nursing Facility in Glenville.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1941, in Albany, a son of the late William and Bertha Hempstead.

Raised and educated in Albany, he joined the United States Army in 1965 and served his country during the Vietnam Era as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Upon his discharge from the military in 1968, he settled in Lena in the Town of New Lisbon where he was employed on a farm owned by Albert Carkees. Five years later, he moved back to his native Albany and became employed as a baker for Nino's Bakery on Central Avenue.

Manford is survived by many loving sons and daughters, including David, Donny, Tina, Matt, Mark, Mary Jane, Jason, Jeremy, Manford, Amy and Ashley. He is also survived by many grandchildren; his former wife, Amy Hempstead; his six brothers and sisters, Don and Ron Hempstead of Altamont, Albert Hempstead of Massachusetts, Bud Hempstead of Albany, Judy Buehl of Delmar and Margaret Hempstead of Albany; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the Faith Baptist Church, State Highway 28, Hyde Park, with the Rev. Michael Glisson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later this spring in Lena Cemetery in the Town of New Lisbon.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Guy E. Parks Fay

ONEONTA — Mr. Guy Edward Parks Fay, 87, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Guy B. and Breta M. (Parks) Fay.

He married his first wife, Marlea F. Olds, on Dec. 27, 1932; she resides in Florida. On March 7, 1964, he married his second wife, Harriett M. Puylara; she predeceased him on March 28, 2000.

Guy will be remembered for his music. He started his first band at the age of 16 and played in just about every restaurant and tavern in three counties.

He was past president of Local 443 Musician's Union, member of Moose Lodge No. 465, Oneonta for 40 years, where he served in many different capacities, and a member of the American Legion Post 0259, Oneonta. Guy liked playing bingo with his many friends.

Survivors include eight children, Delores Rowe, Mona and Darrell Shedd, Linda and Terry Jones, Glori Metcalf, James and Cindy Fay, Mack and Debbie Fay, all of Florida, Marla Steffey of Indiana, Russell and Dorothea Fay of Portlandville; a stepson, Steve Bedford of Latham; a sister, LuJoy Eastice of Prescott, Ariz.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Cremation took place at The Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

There will be a memorial service and burial in the Greater Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at a later date, to be announced.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
