Glenn H. Roscoe

EDMESTON — Glenn Harper Roscoe, 35, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at his home in Pathfinder Village. A longtime resident of Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, he was born April 6, 1968, in Washington, D.C.

Glenn was a caring, sensitive person with an engaging sense of humor who enjoyed the company of others. He will be missed by those whose lives he touched.

Glenn completed his education in 1989, at the Pathfinder School in Edmeston. For many years he received great pleasure attending ARC's Hartwick Day Treatment program.

Survivors include special friends, Joanne and Brittany Mykytyn and family, Oneonta, the family of James Mykytyn, West Oneonta; the residents and dedicated staff members at Pathfinder Village; and his many devoted friends in Oneonta.

A memorial service to celebrate Glenn's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at the Morgan-Jackson All Faiths Chapel at Pathfinder Village, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, Village Chaplain, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenn's memory to the Scholarship Fund at Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, NY 13335.

Internment will be in the Mykytyn family vault at St. James in Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Herbert Blanchard

ONEONTA — A memorial service for Herbert W. Blanchard, who died Jan. 15, 2004, will be Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Edna H. McManus

OCALA, Fla. — Edna H. McManus, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Ocala, Fla.

She had lived in Ocala for about 1 1/2 years.

She was born on April 3, 1913, in the town of Middlefield, a daughter of George and Cecel (Hubbard) Holiday.

She married Harold McManus on June 15, 1938, in the town of Middlefield. He died in 1979.

She and her husband had lived in Fly Creek for many years. She moved to Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, in 1983.

She was a member of the Fly Creek and Cooperstown Methodist Churches.

She graduated from Cooperstown High School.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Potanko, Ocala, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Owen and Alice McManus, Cooperstown; four grandsons, Kevin Gohde, Fly Creek, Keith and Deborah Gohde, Irving, Texas, Patrick McManus, Cooperstown, and Michael and Heather McManus, Cederville; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer at the Fly Creek Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marion County Inc., PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478-4860, specifically for the Legacy House.

Keith D. Merrill

ORLANDO, Fla. — Keith D. Merrill, formerly of East Worcester, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Fla.

He was born on June 3, 1942, in Oneonta, the son of Edward and Mae (Mattice) Merrill.

Keith was married in 1961 to Gertrude (Fay) Merrill.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Tracey and Jon Coon of Worcester, Sally and George Jenkins of East Worcester, Tonia and Kevin Stone of Portland, Maine, and Heather and Richard Gavett of Worcester; and nine grandchildren.

Keith was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and twin sisters.

Cremation took place at the Dove Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc., in Orlando.

Memorial services will be held later.

Martha M. Odell

SIDNEY CENTER — Martha M. Odell, 95, of Sidney Center, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at A. O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born to the late Earl and L. Mae (Jackson) Burrows on June 7, 1908, in the town of Unadilla. Mr. Odell predeceased her on May 13, 1966.

Martha had been a lifelong area resident, and for many years she and her late husband were engaged in dairy farming. She was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Pam Odell of Pocahontas, Ark.; her daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Tony Yung of Middleburgh, Ruby and Frank Merrill of Sidney Center, E. Mary and Dennis Hume of Mount Vision, Helen and George Wilson of Oviedo, Fla., and M. Elaine Strange of Jacksonville, N.C. Martha is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Odell, a graveside and committal service will be held later in the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in memory of Martha M. Odell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Dean Willard McGowan Jr.

ONEONTA — Dean Willard McGowan Jr., passed on to the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004. He was 77.

Dean was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Oneonta, the son of Dean W. Sr. and Juanita McGowan.

He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1944 and spent four years as catcher on the school baseball team. High school was also where he met his sweetheart and love of his life, Mary Jane Smallin. They were married in 1951 after 11 years of courtship and engagement.

Dean served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, being stationed in St. Louis, Mo., and Texas and trained on the B-24 bomber from 1944 to 1946. He attended and graduated from New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Dean worked 18 years for General Electric Co. at locations in Key West, Fla., Schenectady and Syracuse; the latter is where his two sons were born.

A career move brought him back to Oneonta in 1968 where he spent 20 years as plant engineer at Custom Electronics before retiring in 1989. Dean spent four years in post-retirement as sales associate in real estate.

Dean was a member of the American Legion Post No. 259, serving several years as commander and past commander. He was also an active member for 30 years of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 1312 and a member of the Masonic Order No. 466. He spent more than 35 years as an active member in many levels of the Otschodela Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). As a youth, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult, he was inducted into the BSA Order of the Arrow and was awarded the order's highest honor of Vigil. Dean was bestowed with the Boy Scouts high honor of the Silver Beaver award in 1979 and later served as chief presenter of subsequent Silver Beaver recipients for 20 years. He was awarded the William Spurgon III award for Scout Exploring and in his later years, until his death, served on the Otschodela Council executive board.

Dean was a member of the Oneonta Sportsman Club, enjoying riflemanship, and throughout his life enjoyed golf, downhill skiing, camping, and trapshooting. He was also a member of the Otsego Numismatic Association, and enjoyed genealogy, vacationing in Cape Hatteras, N.C., and astronomy.

Dean and his wife, Mary Jane, celebrated 50 years of marriage in March of 2001 with a dinner gathering of family, followed by a larger reception at their church.

Dean is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane; son, Jeffrey Dean McGowan of Delhi; daughter-in-law, Denise McGowan; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Sean of Delhi; son, Scott Andrew McGowan of Chicago, Ill.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth and Carlton VanSchaick of Schenectady; nephews, Tom VanSchaick, Bob VanSchaick and Gary VanSchaick; cousins, Bill Blanchard and Marion Allen of Schenectady and Carol (McGowan) Czaja; and second cousins, Arlene Wojtowicz, Richard Blanchard and Robert Blanchard.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow officiating.

Interment, with military honors, will be held at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dean's memory to the First United Methodist Church, Otschodela Council of Boy Scouts of America or the American Legion Post 259.

Charles Naden Jr.

WALTON — Charles Howard Naden Jr. of Walton went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

Charlie was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Hillsdale, N.J., to Charles Howard and Mary Elizabeth Waldron Naden. He graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1953.

Mr. Naden served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1964, attaining the rank of SP-4.

Charlie (Rigger) Naden was a police officer with the Park Ridge Police Department in Park Ridge, N.J. He was with the force for 25 years, retiring in November 1984.

Charlie was a very special person. He was an Eagle Scout master, Boy Scouts of America; a charter member of the Tri-Boro Ambulance Corps, serving 18 years; and was the Pascack Valley Chamber of Commerce Man of The Year in 1977, all in Park Ridge, N.J.

When he moved to Walton 20 years ago, he continued his community service as a member of the Trout Creek Community Church, the town of Tompkins code enforcement officer, former owner of C&C Feed in Walton and as an employee of Del-Met.

Mr. Naden will be remembered for his great friendship and keen sense of humor. When he was needed by anyone, he was always there for them. In Walton, he found great pleasure in antiquing and traveling.

Mr. Naden is survived by his wife, Anne, of Walton; his daughter, Donna of Walton; his sons, Charles of Park Ridge, N.J., and Robert (Karen) of Walton; grandsons, Robert, Charles and Sean; sister, Mary Lou (Ray) Pfleigler of Titusville, Fla.; niece, Debbie (Jim) Talley of Westwood, N.J.; cousins, Corrine Naden of Tarrytown, and Mary Lou (Arthur) Weisner of Santa Rosa, Calif.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elaine; his parents, Charles H. and Mary Naden; and a brother, George Henry Naden.

Charlie's family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets in Walton.

Burial will be in the Pascack Reformed Church Cemetery in Park Ridge, N.J.

There will be a memorial service in the spring at the Trout Creek Community Church.

There will also be a memorial service in the spring in Park Ridge.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Trout Creek Community Church, Trout Creek, would be appreciated.

Raymond Tallman

DECATUR — Raymond L. Tallman Sr., 85, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 29, 1918, in New Berlin, the son of Samuel and Clara (Myers) Tallman.

Ray married Ada M. Weinmann on April 25, 1942, in Edmeston. She predeceased him on Dec. 1, 2003.

Following graduation Ray enlisted in the Army for three years. He got out just before Pearl Harbor, then went back into the Army, serving in Ft. Niagara, Ft. Meade and Ft. Sill. At Ft. Sill, he went to Officer's Candidate School, then went to Camp White and Camp Adair. From there his division went to Norfolk, Va., the debarkation center, to join a convoy of ships going to Africa and Italy. From Africa, the division advanced to the Anzio Beach, headed all the way up the boot of Italy to Geriza, Italy. At war's end, Ray's outfit was on the Yugoslavia border.

After he returned to the States, he spent time on recruiting duty in Malone. From there the next assignment was Ft. Dix, N.J., then on to Ft. Lee, Va., then to Fort Jackson, S.C. Orders came through for an assignment to the 8th Army Tokyo, Japan. He spent the next three years in the 8th Army Stockade, serving in various command positions.

In 1949, he returned from Japan to Ft. Hood, Texas, to the 2nd Armored Division. He then went to two different military schools at Ft. Sill, Okla. Upon graduation from the second school, orders were received for deployment to Korea, where the war had just begun. This tour lasted from August 1950 to August 1951. He engaged in combat through Korea to the Chojin Reservoir, 60 miles from the Russian border. Upon returning from Korea the next assignment was Camp McCoy, Wis.

After six months, orders came through for the Panama Canal Zone in 1952. There Ray was assigned to Fort Amador and later to Ft. Corozal. After three years it was time for a change of assignments. The military had entered into the "Missile Era" therefore Ray went through new training at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Those missiles were first line defense for New York City.

The last two years of Ray's active duty was spent in Ft. Carson, Colo. During active duty Ray graduated from seven different Military Schools. He has served at 20 different Army installations, spending eight years overseas in six different countries.

He received eight Major Battle Stars during World War II and the Korean War with seven citations from Commanders during peace time. His other decorations for valor include: three Bronze Stars, the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross and four Marksman awards. His medals include the Korean, Korean Presidential, Korean Emergency Medal, European Theater, Good Conduct, Pre-Pearl Harbor, American Theater, Victory, Germany and Japan Occupational, Reserve and the United Nations Medal.

After his retirement as a major in July of 1959, Ray returned to Otsego County with his family. There he received an appointment as a counselor in the division of Veterans Affairs, State of New York. During his 20 years with the VA he had the opportunity to serve the veterans and their families of Otsego and surrounding counties.

A resident of the town of Worcester since 1959, Ray was an active member of the Worcester United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer several years, lifetime member American Legion Worcester Post No. 1584 holding most offices; Past Commander Otsego County; County Service Officer of Otsego County 18 years; Charter and lifetime member Schenevus VFW; past member, Schenevus Valley Lodge No. 592, Master in 1990 and 1991; past member OES No. 138 Schenevus, Patron 1986-1987; Board Assessment Review for 15 years; Assessor of Decatur; Councilman of Decatur; lifetime membership DVA Oneonta.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing all over the world, which brought fun and relaxation.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth T. DeMartino of Marietta, Ga., Barbara J. Tallman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Raymond L. and Linda Tallman of Richmondville; grandchildren, Robert D., Sean R. and wife, Jennifer, and Todd A. DeMartino, Jennifer A. Geerken and Rebecca L. Tallman; great-grandchildren, Connor and Mason DeMartino; sisters, Gertrude Mordus of Hamilton, Isabelle Olson of Arlington, Md., and Eleanora Madore of Cold Brook; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co., Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, Main Street, with the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor, officiating.

The interment with full military honors will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.
