Frederick Binder

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. — Dr. Frederick M. Binder, 83, of Hummelstown, Pa., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, in M.S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa.

He was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Atlantic City, N.J., a son of the late Paul R. and Kathryn (Moore) Binder.

He was a retired educator and administrator; a graduate of Pleasantville (N.J.) High School and Ursinus College and received his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Binder also held honorary degrees from the following institutions: Hartwick College, Susquehanna University, Wagner College, Rider College, Ursinus College, Washington & Jefferson College, and the University of Humberside in England.

He retired as president of Juniata College after more than a decade of service and was a former professor of American History at Leeds University in England; a professor and administrator at Temple & Thiel Universities; and a professor and president of Hartwick College, Whittier College (California) as well as Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. He also served as associate commissioner of higher education for New York state and was the first American historian to be awarded a Fulbright Grant to the former Yugoslavia.

Dr. Binder had numerous educational articles published as well as three books two of which were award winners.

He was a World War II Navy lieutenant commander of a PT boat in the South Pacific Theater; Episcopalian by faith; a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.; the Hummelstown VFW; a lifelong member and office holder of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity; and a former member of numerous community service clubs and professional organizations.

Surviving are his wife, Grace (Brandt) Binder; two daughters, Janet (Binder) Houts Esq. and her husband, John W., of San Diego, Calif., and Roberta (Binder) Heath Esq. and her husband, Richard I., of Huntingdon, Pa.; three grandchildren, Frederick W. Houts, Kathryn G. Houlihan and Conner J.R. Heath; and two stepgrandchildren, Andrew P. and Derek R. Heath.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in the St. Andrews in the Valley Episcopal Church, 4620 Linglestown Road (Route No. 39), Harrisburg, Pa.

There will be no viewing. Inurnment with military honors will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa. Please omit flowers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick M. Binder Memorial Fund, care of Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA 16652.

Helen A. Canner

ONEONTA — Helen A. Canner, born to William and Lillian Sieber in Brooklyn, on Dec. 27, 1909, passed away at The Meadows in Cooperstown, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.

She was a longtime resident of Oneonta, and a retired legal secretary for the late Lincoln Latham, the late Honorable Joseph Molinari, the late Honorable Ronald Rowley, Honorable Robert Harlem Sr. and George Silvernell.

Preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Raymond Canner Sr.; her brother, William Sieber; her sister, Lillian Sieber Von Urff; and her granddaughter, Jackie Barry.

She is survived by her children, Raymond Canner of Oneonta, Valerie Barry of Lansdale, Pa., Marilyn O'Rourke of Dallas, Texas, Robert Canner and his wife, Pam, of Blue Bell, Pa., and William Canner and his wife, Mary, of Tioga Center; 13 grandchildren, Bonnie Canner Cuozzo, Michele Barry Pondolfino, Jolee Barry Sewell, Lisa O'Rourke Hoffman, Denise O'Rourke Eljoohi, Gregory O'Rourke, Patti Canner, Dustin Canner, Kristofer Canner, Jarrod Canner, Katie Canner, Laura Canner and Brian Canner; nine great-grandchildren, Timothy Cuozzo, Alicia Cuozzo, Zachary Pondolfino, Jackie Pondolfino, Scott Pondolfino, Lauren Hoffmann, Alex Hoffmann, Paul Hoffmann and Ali Eljoohi.

For more than 40 years she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a past member of the Otsego County Republican Party, the Catholic Women's Club and the Women's Civic Club. She loved crossword puzzles, was an avid reader and had such spirit.

She was devoted to her family and instilled in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the importance of family. She will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Friday evening from 6 to 8, and on Saturday morning from 9 to 10 at which time the family will be in attendance.

A reception following the Mass will be held in St. Mary's Parish Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be directed to St. Mary's Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary Eliza Hoke

SOUTH VALLEY — Mrs. Mary Eliza (Barnes) Hoke, 84, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Gothicville, in the town of Decatur, the daughter of Henry W. and Anna Cecile (Alvord) Barnes.

On June 8, 1936, she married Donald S. Hoke in Pleasant Brook. He predeceased her on July 3, 2000.

She was a homemaker and was a glove machine worker. She was a member of the First Christian Church, South Valley, former member of the Ladies Aid Society of the First Christian Church and the Women's Club of South Valley.

Survivors include one son, Dennis and his wife, Joan, Hoke of Pleasant Brook; four daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Douglas, VanDewerker of Westford, Jean Winkler, Debra and her husband, Charles, Brodie, and Victoria and her husband, Chip, Myers, all of South Valley; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Maurice Barnes of Contoocook, N.H., and Ivan and his wife, Barbara, Barnes of Ames; two sisters, Ida Quaif of Hesperia, Calif., and June and her husband, Walter, Franklin of Homer; two sisters-in-law, Vera Barnes of Cooperstown, and Bennie Hoke of Alamagordo, N.M.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Morris and Marjorie Brigham of Cherry Valley.

Besides her husband, Donald Hoke, she was predeceased by three brothers, Marvin, Sanford and Leland Barnes.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker and the Rev. Robert Finch (grandsons) officiating.

Spring burial will take place in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Contributions in Mrs. Hoke's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

John W. Menne

ROXBURY — John W. Menne Jr., 75, of Roxbury passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at his home.

He was born Dec. 20, 1928, in North Bergen, N.J., the son of John W. Menne Sr. and Margaret Cooper.

He was the beloved husband of Julia Ann "Neri" Menne, for 54 years.

He was in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from July 2, 1946 to June 24, 1949.

He retired from Bell Atlantic as an engineer in 1984.

John was a member of the Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post No. 1785, Roxbury.

He has been living in Roxbury since 1980, moving from Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.

He is the beloved husband of Julia Ann Menne, Roxbury; devoted father of five sons, John W. III (Patricia) Menne, Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., Michael A. (Sarah) Menne, Brick, N.J., Matthew J. (Vesna) Menne, Fort Lee, N.J., Martin (Teresa) Menne, Roxbury, and Ian A. Menne and his fiancee, (Kelly Elko), Hawthorne, N.J.; and two daughters, Dianna (Eugene) Bubach, Roxbury, and Gabrielle Menne, Manhattan; devoted grandfather of 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and devoted brother, Ronald Menne, Palm Harbor, Fla.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Costa Funeral Home, 170 Central Ave., Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Philips Neri Roman Catholic Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato as celebrant.

Committal services will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the J.W. Menne Jr. Scholarship Fund, care of O'Brien, Roxbury Central School, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Robert Cartwright

LONGVIEW, Texas — Robert Howard Cartwright passed away, after an extended illness, at his home in Longview, Texas, on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, with his wife, Betty, at his side.

He was born in Denver, on Feb. 27, 1936, the son of Howard K. and Maude (Davis) Cartwright.

He married Betty Coons of Dresserville, March 7, 1958.

He was raised on the family farm in Denver and graduated from Roxbury Central School, Class of 1954. He entered the Air Force and made that a career of 20 years, retiring in 1977. He earned a degree in business administration at Cooks College in 1974.

He and his family made their home in White Oak, Texas, where they operated a home construction business for several years.

One of his greatest joys in retirement was traveling in their RV and visiting former Air Force friends and family. He also did beautiful lapidary work with stones that he and his family found on their many expeditions of rock hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Brett and wife, DeAnna, of Hallsville, Texas, and Craig of Gladewater, Texas; four grandchildren, Adam, Ami, Jacob and Daniel; one sister and brother-in-law, Leta and Vincent Long, Littleton, Colo.; two aunts, Dorothy Cartwright of Reading, Pa., and Dorothy Davis of Stamford; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is being planned for mid-February.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Bob's name to the FUMC Hallsville, PO Box 365, Hallsville, Texas 75650, or Gladewater United Methodist Church.

Condolences to the family may be mailed to 1197 N. Juanita, Longview, Texas 75605.

Ruth A. Banks

ONEONTA — Ruth A. Banks, 88, of Academy Arms, Oneonta, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Grace, due to kidney failure.

She was born June 23, 1915, the daughter of Orley and Jenny Wormsley of Shinhopple.

She married Steve Banks on Jan. 29, 1936.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Steve and Tricia Banks of Albany, Ga., and LeRoy and Lily Banks of Yachats, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Grace) Hitchcock Sr. of West Laurens, and Ann Fredenburgh of Oneonta; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. She is also survived by one brother and his wife, Orley and Louise Wormsley of Wells Bridge; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Franks of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Steve Banks; one daughter, Jean Hamm; one son, Charles Banks; one brother, Warren Wormsley; and one sister, Margaret McAdams.

Ruth will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Ruth enjoyed her rides on the bus to Price Chopper every Tuesday, the Easter egg hunts at her daughter Grace's home, Christmas where she passed out her personal gifts to her family, and her Sunday rides with her daughter and son-in-law.

At the request of Mrs. Banks there will be no funeral services. Cremation will take place, and burial will be in Long Flats Cemetery, near Shinhopple, at a later date.

Donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Elenore C. Young

SIDNEY — Elenore C. Young of 20 River St., Sidney, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Middletown.

On Aug. 27, 1949, she married Robert L. Young in Middletown. Mr. and Mrs. Young for over 40 years owned and operated a rental housing business in Sidney.

She was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Robert L. Young, of Sidney; brother-in-law and his wife, Milton and Vivian Young of Sidney; and grandson, Kevin Young of Virginia.

A son, Jay L. Young, predeceased his mother Feb. 23, 1997.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of her church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Friday with her family in attendance one hour prior to the services.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney United Methodist Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, NY or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Carolyn J. McLaud

EDGEWATER, Fla. — Carolyn J. McLaud, 68, passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2004, surrounded by family at her home at 432 Bella Vista, Hacienda Del Rio, Edgewater, Fla.

Born Jan. 15, 1936, in Laurens, the daughter of T. Wendell and Juanita (Stilson) Peet.

She attended Laurens Central School, graduating in 1953, and attended one year at what is now State University at Albany. She later continued her education in business through the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

Carolyn married Maurice S. McLaud on July 15, 1954, in Laurens, and worked in various job fields while raising her children. She volunteered at the Ambrose V. Powell Memorial Library in Laurens and worked many years as Postal Clerk at the Laurens Post Office until 1973, when her family moved to Bainbridge. She retired from Unadilla Silo Company, Inc. in Unadilla, after 20 years of service in 1996.

Upon retiring, she and her husband loved to travel, especially enjoying trips to Ocean City, Md., and taking cruises. She and her husband have spent many snowbird years in Florida, finally settling in Edgewater in 2003.

She was a 44-year member of the Laurens American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Bainbridge-Afton Chapter, and a member of the Sidney Chapter of the Women of the Moose. She was also member of the Board of Directors of the Laurens American Legion.

Carolyn was an avid reader and enjoyed working on New York Times crossword puzzles, playing card games, listening to music and watching movies of all genres. Carolyn and her husband loved to dance, especially enjoying the sounds of country and 1950s rock 'n' roll. She was a devoted Buffalo Bills fan and has continued to wear her Jim Kelly jersey with pride. NASCAR racing was another favorite pastime, and although she was a particular fan of Geoff Bodine, her roster of must-watch drivers also included Rusty Wallace, Matt Kenseth and Bill Elliot.

Besides her husband of 49 1/2 years, Carolyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin B. and Lynn McLaud of Batavia, and her son, Eric S. McLaud of Gardiner, and his companion, Lori Todd of Newburgh; her daughter, Karen J. McLaud of Johnson City, and her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah C. and Russell Hyde of Syracuse; her beloved former daughter-in-law, Carla McLaud of Pine Bush; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Julie; two grandsons, Charles and Eric Michael; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard W. and Barbara Peet of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Donald U. and Georgia Peet of Scarborough, Maine; one sister, Nancy L. (Peet) Fraize of St. Charles, Ark.; three aunts, Louise Hare of Oneonta, Doris Pearsall of Orlando, Fla., and Ernestine Brightman, also of Orlando; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Wendell in 1957; her son, David M. McLaud II, in 1977; and her mother, Juanita, in 2002. She was also predeceased by an infant sister, Marilyn.

Her love of life, family and friends will always be felt by those whose lives she touched.

A small memorial service was held at her residence on Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, for family and friends in the greater Florida area.

A more formal memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Laurens Presbyterian Church, with committal of her remains at the family gravesite in the Laurens Cemetery. Further details will be made available at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carolyn's memory may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; Broome Developmental Disabilities Services, 249 Glenwood Road, Binghamton, NY 13905; or any local Hospice care facility.

Esther Peaster

ONEONTA — Esther Peaster, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at home with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Worcester, the daughter of Channing and Ursula (Decker) Spencer.

She was employed by Mid-State Fuel Corp. and Oneonta Oil & Fuel Co. until her retirement in 1977.

She was a member of the Otego Methodist Church, the Oneonta Grange, and others.

She is survived by one son, Philip; and two daughters, Nancy and her mate, Arthur Brundage Jr., and Barbara Stiefel, all of Oneonta. Also surviving are one granddaughter, Jennifer Ross, Oneonta; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Joshua Frederick of Oneonta; one sister, Ruth All of Worcester; and one nephew, Dale All of Cobleskill.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours or services. Burial at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, any and all contributions are to be made to Hospice of Oneonta, in the name of Esther Peaster.

Lee Wyman

UNADILLA — Mrs. Lee Wyman, 68, of Unadilla passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 1, 2004, in the town of Delhi.

She was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Erick and Ragnhild (Satre) Ruud.

Lee married Thomas R. Wyman on July 15, 1967, in New York City. Mr. Wyman predeceased her on Feb. 9, 2001.

Lee has been a resident of Unadilla since 1975, and was an active member of the Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175, the Ladies Auxiliary of Elks Lodge No. 2175 since 1986, and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary from 1995-1997, and was a leader for 20 years of the Delaware County 4-H.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Karen Wilcox of Morris, and Susan and Leigh Wilcox of Delhi; her sons and daughters-in-law, Oneonta Police Dept. Lt. Joseph V. and Anne Marie Redmond of Oneonta, and CM Sgt. USAF Chris and Cindy Redmond of Dayton, Ohio; her lifelong friend, Joseph V. Redmond of Guilford; her brother and sister-in-law, Einar and Tillie Ruud of North Falmouth, Mass.; her grandchildren, Kristi Miracco, Joseph Redmond III (NYPD), Brian Leonard, Catherine, Christopher and Candice Redmond, Michael Wilcox II, Cassie Redmond and Courtenay Chambers. Also survived by a niece.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Lori Susan Redmond; and a grandson, Matthew Leonard.

A service to celebrate the life of Lee Wyman will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, in the spring.

Friends may call at funeral home Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney, NY 13838 or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Lee Wyman.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
