Norman H. Knapp

NORTH PORT, Fla. - Norman H. Knapp, 83, formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Oneonta, the son of Harry and Evelyn (Butler) Knapp. He was a graduate of Oneonta High School.

Norman was a veteran of World War II serving in Italy. He retired from the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in 1980, where he was the wreck master and crane operator for the wrecking crew.

He was a lifetime resident of Oneonta, except for the last three years of his life in which he resided with Gary and Linda Hunt in Clinton, and most recently in North Port, Fla.

He was known to all everywhere as "Uncle Norm."

Norman was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Rosemand Smallin, Juanita Mosca, Virginia Stillwell, Evelyn Hunt, Ethelyn Ruffo and Colleen Burgher; and a very special nephew, Dan Smallin Jr.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; by special nephews and their wives, Gary and Linda Hunt of North Port, Fla., Merritt and Vicki Hunt of Oneonta; beloved great-nephews and nieces, Chris and Kristie Hunt of Sarasota, Fla., Chad Hunt of Albany, Andrea and Kelly Hunt of Oneonta; and by his beloved great-great-nephew, Tyler Hunt, with whom he spent many cherished hours of playing and enjoying each other.

May you rest in peace, "Uncle Norm."

Calling hours will be at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta, on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, from 3 to 5 p.m., with the funeral service at 5 p.m. The Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Oneonta Elm Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be held at the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date to be announced.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Mildred Lipovsky

ONEONTA — Mildred Lipovsky, 56, of Oneonta passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 21, 1947, in Fayetteville, N.C., the daughter of Harold A. and Grace E. (Jackson) Robinson.

She was married to George Lipovsky, who died in 1996.

Millie graduated from the Utica School of Commerce, as well as working for the Delaware County Department of Social Services.

She was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church, North Franklin, and its Women's Guild.

With all of life's challenges, Millie was an inspiration to everyone who loved and knew her.

She is survived by her son, Scott R. Lipovsky, and his fiancee, Kari Miller of Oneonta; her mother, Grace E. Ross of Oneonta; a grandson, Liam Avry Lipovsky of Oneonta; her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Roy and Margaret Robinson of Maryland, Mary Ross of Oneonta, Lou and Bob Lansing of Oneonta, Albert W. and Rauna Ross Jr. of Mesa, Ariz., Sue Ross and her fiance, Albert Spencer Jr. of Otego, and Michael and Kathy Ross of Laurens. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father; and her stepfather, Albert W. Ross Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer and Pastor Ken Brookens officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery in West Davenport.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to service time.

The family has requested that memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Aldrich Baptist Church, Franklin, NY 13775. Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Julia Slentz Kelly

BAINBRIDGE — Julia Slentz Kelly, 85, of Bainbridge passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born May 29, 1918, daughter of the late Marvin and Millie (Griffin) Williams in Columbus.

She married Leonard Slentz in 1936; they resided in New Berlin and owned the Oldsmobile, Chevrolet dealership. Mr. Slentz predeceased her in 1972. Julia remarried on Nov. 12, 1976, to Rae M. Kelly of Bainbridge.

Mrs. Kelly was employed for Otsego County Social Services when she retired.

She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin and attended Friends Church in Unadilla.

"She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend."

She is survived by her husband, Rae M. Kelly, Bainbridge; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Ron Bennett, Burlington Flats; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Joann Slentz, Burlington Flats; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Elliot, New Berlin; daughter-in-law, Betty Slentz, Bolla; aunt, Rosanna Griffin, Oneonta; two special friends, Paul Gascon, Afton, and Helen McDonald, Mount Upton; brother-in-law, Alan Kelly, Punta Gorda, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by a son, Marvin Slentz.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin. Fr. Charles Taylor will officiate.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Philomena Wilson

SIDNEY — Philomena "Phyllis" Wilson, 79, of Sidney passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born March 5, 1924, daughter of the late Pasquale and Philomena (Ferro) Giordano in Madison, N.J.

She married Clifford L. Wilson on Nov. 25, 1945, in Madison. He predeceased her on Dec. 7, 1993.

Phyllis was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in the tool crib from 1956-1985, when she retired.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, and a past member of the Sidney Moose Lodge.

She is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, James W. Wilson, Sidney, and Gary and Kim Wilson, Sidney; four grandchildren, Ian, Sidney, Amber, New Mexico, Brian, New York, and Katie, Rochester; brother, James Giordano, Madison; sister, Millie Allegriano, West Orange, N.J.; brother-in-law, Donald Wilson, Unadilla; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Latta, Sidney Center, and Barbara Wilson, Sidney.

She was predeceased by five siblings.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Frank Birdsall

SIDNEY — Frank Birdsall, 96, of Sidney passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

He was born Oct. 15, 1907, son of the late Eugene and Clara (Spencer) Birdsall in Utica.

Frank married Lena Dibble on Dec. 6, 1930, in Sidney. She predeceased him on Nov. 13, 1980.

He was employed as a bus driver for Sidney Central School when he retired. Frank was a member of the Sidney Fire Department since 1925. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney.

Mr. Birdsall was predeceased by his son, Paul; four brothers, Earl, Alton, Archie and Tracy; two sisters, Lottie and Bertha; and a niece, Marian Judd.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Rosalie Northrup, Sidney; granddaughter, Paula and William Hoffman, Gilbertsville, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Amber and Cassie Hoffman; niece, Emma Jones, Sidney Center; nephew, Justus Judd, Hillcrest; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. A fireman's service will be held at 7 p.m. and funeral services will follow at 8:30 p.m. with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Fire Department and the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Victor Larsen

ANDES — Victor Larsen, 64, formerly of Andes, died Jan. 31, 2004.

He was born in Brooklyn, to Victor and Edna Larsen.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959, and joined the New York State Police in 1963. He spent the majority of his state police career in Margaretville from 1964 until his retirement in 1987.

He also served as the assessor for the town of Andes from 1987-1997.

He married Eileen (Bergh) on Nov. 25, 1961, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Paul (Christiana) Larsen of Bel Air, Md., Elizabeth (Michael) Steeno of Elkmont, Ala., and Steven Larsen of Abingdon, Md.; and three grandchildren, Ashley Larsen, Lucas Larsen and Justin Steeno; and his mother, Edna Larsen of Matawan, N.J.

He was predeceased by his sister, Karen Rauth; and father, Victor Larsen Sr.

There will be a private family service in Florida, and a memorial service at a later date in Andes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Andes Fire Department/Ambulance Service or the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy L. Haynes

EAST GUILFORD — Dorothy Louise Haynes, 80, of 120 East Guilford Cemetery Road, East Guilford, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at her residence.

She was born April 23, 1923, in Masonville, the daughter of the late Richard and Pearl Gransbury Charles.

She was first married to Herbert S. Wratten on July 5, 1951. He predeceased her on March 25, 1977. On Sept. 21, 1984, she married Russell L. Haynes in Unadilla. He passed away Feb. 2, 1986.

Dottie was a retired employee of the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney.

She was a member of the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 V.F.W. Auxiliary, Sidney, Women of the Moose Chapter No. 502, Sidney, and the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion Auxiliary of Sidney.

She is survived by her sister, Eva Button of Mount Upton; brother, Kaveda Charles of Niagara Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, Lavern and Russell Charles predeceased Dorothy.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday evening, Feb. 5, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Howard, pastor of the Masonville Federated Church, officiating. Friends are invited to call from 7 p.m. until the time of her services at 8 p.m.

Burial will be at the convenience of her family in the East Guilford Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main Street, Sidney.

Joanne Donaldson

STAMFORD — Joanne J. Donaldson, 48, passed away peacefully, Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, after bravely battling Leukemia for over a year.

She was born in Queens, on Dec. 6, 1955, the daughter of Frank and Amanda Franco.

She was an area resident for the past 18 months, relocating from Deer Park, Long Island.

Joanne loved her arts, crafts, and gardening with her two sons.

She will be remembered by her husband, Robert; and her sons, Robert, age 4, and James, age 3; her parents, Frank and Amanda Franco; her two sisters, Nina Barber and her husband, George, and Mary Gaddis and her husband, Chris, all of Stamford. Also surviving are three brothers and 19 nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 5, and Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Feb. 7, 2004, at 12:30 p.m. by Father Anthony Ligato, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Ethel S. Mable

DELHI — Ethel Schwille Mable, 98, of Delhi passed away on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi. She had resided there for the past five years.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1905, in Delhi, the daughter of John and Louise Schwille.

She married Henry Mable in 1929. He predeceased her in 1985.

Ethel lived a very special life. During her years living on Second Street in Delhi, she enjoyed her flower garden, especially in the spring and summer. She also enjoyed the flowers she grew in her home.

She will be remembered for her service, stewardship and spirit.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Mable, who lives in Washington, D.C.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Woodland Cemetery on Saturday, June 26, 2004, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to please make a memorial contribution in Ethel's memory to a local charity or organization of your choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Ina Gage McGrath

EAST WORCESTER — Ina Gage McGrath, 3 Factory Hill Road (Calcutta), East Worcester.

Gerard McGrath and Arlene McGrath Bywater and husband John mourn the passing of their beloved mother, Ina Gage McGrath, on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004.

Richard J. Moffett

WALTON — Richard J. Moffett Jr., 55, of Binghamton, and formerly of Walton, passed away Wednesday morning at home after a long illness.

Rich was born in Jamaica, Queens, the son of Richard J. and Caroline Wilson Moffett Sr.

He married the former Claudine Scherer on Aug. 4, 1974, in Jamaica, Queens.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1974. Rich was a paramedic for many years, last employed by Hudson Valley Ambulance, Liberty.

He was a member of the Johnson City Lions Club, and a former member of the Walton EMS.

He loved all kinds of animals, and as Chairman of the Board of Docents, Educator and Volunteer at Ross Park Zoo of Binghamton, he took animals to schools, senior centers and other places where people were interested in seeing animals from the zoo. He was also a gifted photographer, where he had many photographs hanging in his home and often gave to people as gifts.

He worked at a horse farm in Delhi, cleaning the barn and feeding the horses so that his children could learn to ride horses and be exposed to all that a farm had to offer.

But most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Claudine Moffett, at home; two daughters, Elisa and Brian Serfass of Vestal, and Christine Moffett and Christopher Hanna of Winchester, Va.; one son, Richard J. Moffett III of Oneonta; his mother, Caroline Moffett of Walton; three sisters, Carolyn Aiello of Florida, Joan Schmidt and Kathleen Boyd, both of Walton; one brother, John Moffett of Walton; two grandchildren, Kaylee Hanna and Nathaniel Serfass; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Richard J. Moffett Sr., in June 1975.

A memorial service will be held at the Ross Park Educational Center, Binghamton, at a later date. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in Rich's memory may be made to Ross Park Zoo, 185 Park Ave., Binghamton, NY 13903.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.
