Richard W. Cornell

AFTON — Richard William Cornell, 44, of 161 Main St., Afton, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, in Vestal.

He was born Feb. 11, 1959, in Sidney, the son of Lewis B. Cornell Sr., and the late Patricia Simpkins Cornell.

He graduated from Sidney High School Class of 1977, Monroe Community College, Rochester, in 1988. Rich received his B.S. in Geography from the New York University at Oneonta in 1994. He graduated Magna Cum Laude.

He was active in the local Native American Community. Rich loved nature, photography, and woodworking and was a writer of poetry.

He will always be remembered by his family and numerous friends for loving concern for others.

He is survived by his daughter, Lena Cornell of Afton; his father, Lewis E. Cornell Sr. of Afton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lewis E. and Pamela Cornell Jr. and children, Marjorie and Elizabeth of Virginia Beach, Va., and Steve and Elizabeth Cornell of Woodstock, Ga.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Dianne Brockmann and daughter, Maria of Milford, and Sharon and Gerard Cuyle of Virginia Beach, and children, Matthew and Christina Palmeri; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Christopher Prezorski, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Afton, officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be made to the N.B.T. of Afton, for the care and education of his daughter, Lena.

Aletha M. Rice

VENICE, Fla. — Aletha M. Rice, 94, of Venice, Fla., and formerly of the Mount Upton and Bainbridge area, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Pinebrook Nursing Center, Venice.

She was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Conesville, the daughter of the late Charles and Hettie Robinson Storey.

On May 29, 1926, she married Glenn R. Rice in Northville. He predeceased her on Aug. 9, 1984.

She had been a Florida resident since 1998, moving from the area to be near her daughter, Rita.

Aletha was a longtime member of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Mount Upton Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her two daughters, Rita I. Smith of Venice, Fla., and Jane E. Miller of San Diego, Calif.; her son, Robert C. Rice of San Diego; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of her church, officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance.

Burial will be later in the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Mount Upton United Methodist Church.

Raymond C. Nelson

GREENE — Raymond C. Nelson, 87, of Harrington Road, Greene, passed away Feb. 4, 2004, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Oakley Nelson, of Greene; two daughters, Cheryl Korenyik of Oneonta and Darlene Japhet of South Carolina. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nelson was born in Galesburg, Ill., on April 10, 1916, the son of the late Carl and Vivian Mudge Nelson.

He attended Berean Bible Church for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He also served with the New York State Guard while they were active.

Mr. Nelson was very interested in woodcarving, Indian artifacts, and archeology and did several digs while serving as a short-term missionary in Israel. He had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Root Funeral Home, Greene, on Friday evening, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Berean Bible Church, with Associate Pastor William Reid officiating.

Burial will be in West Oneonta Cemetery in the spring of the year.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Nelson may be sent to the Greene Emergency Squad, 8 N. Canal St., Greene, NY 13778.

David G. Blakely

UNADILLA FORKS — David G. Blakely, 72, of Unadilla Forks died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 13, 1931.

On Oct. 30, 1976, he married Marie Humura, who survives.

David retired from Utica Metal Products, Utica, as its foreman.

In his free time he and his wife, Marie, would go fishing.

Funeral services for David will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Doug Burleigh, Chaplain for Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery, White Store.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Glen Edwin Meyer

DELHI — Glen Edwin Meyer, 86, of the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

He was born on July 29, 1917, in Phillipsburg, Kan., the son of William and Alice (Francis) Meyer.

Glen served as a communications chief in the United States Army during World War II. His service in the European Theatre included battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Medal for Good Conduct.

Following his military service, he settled in Delhi, where he was employed by the Delhi Telephone Company as a lineman. He was a 50 year member of the Delhi Baptist Church. Prior to military service, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Edwin always enjoyed gardening, nature, reading and antique cars. His sweet, gentle nature and quick wit were apparent to all he met.

He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Elva (Gregory), of the Countryside Care Center, Delhi; a daughter, Nancy Merritt of Delhi, a daughter, Melinda Gaidemak and her two sons, Jacob and Cole of Delhi, and their father, Joel Gaidemak of Red Bank, N.J.; a stepson, R. Dale Bellino and his wife, Catherine, and their son, Barry of Emmons, and their daughter, Kerstin Bellino Medwin of Albany; a brother, Orrin Meyer of Indianapolis, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery in the spring at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in Edwin's memory can be sent to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, PO Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753, 746-3080.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

James H. Layton

MASONVILLE — James H. Layton of Masonville, a retired United States Army Warrant Officer, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at his home. He was 67.

Mr. Layton was born Jan. 9, 1937, in Rock Rift, to Harold and Florence Ingalls Layton.

He graduated from Walton High School in 1954.

Mr. Layton served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He was a Vietnam veteran.

He was a member of the Guilford Golf Club, an avid reader; he enjoyed birding, fishing and hiking. He also traveled extensively around the United States.

Mr. Layton is survived by his sons, Charles Edward (Robin) of Hagerstown, Md., Jonathon Bruce (Sarah) of Great Falls, Mont., and Jamie Joseph (Lisa) of Des Moines, Iowa; his sisters, Loretta (Russell) Turner of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Bernita (Tim) Henry of Beaufort, S.C.; his brothers, Richard (Cindy) of Walton, and Bill (Kathryn) of Sidney Center. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joshua, Jacqueline, Michael and Shea; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Christine Shillabeer; and a sister, Jacqueline Wood.

Mr. Layton's family would like to extend a special thank you to Catskill Area Hospice and especially Danielle Garry for her kindness.

Memorial service will be Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m., with the Rev. David Gatje of the Trout Creek Community Church officiating, at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Donations in his name to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 would be appreciated.

Evelyn A. Roberts

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Evelyn A. (Sullivan) Roberts, of Havre de Grace, Md., died at her home on Feb. 3, 2004. She was 76 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Bert and Marie (Leonard) Sullivan of Mount Vision. She graduated from Laurens Central High School in 1944, and from State Teachers College in Oneonta in 1948.

She was a member of Cranberry United Methodist Church in Perryman, Md., Harford County 4-H leader and a member of the Teacher's Association of Harford Co., Md.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and canning her vegetables. She also loved her gardening and flowers, and enjoyed traveling with her husband before his death.

She was a first-grade teacher in Havre de Grace Elementary School for 40 years before her retirement in 1991. Following her retirement, she substitute taught in Churchville Elementary, Meadowvale Elementary and Havre de Grace Elementary School.

She was a wonderful teacher, friend and mother, who will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Boyce M. Roberts and wife, Mavis, of Havre de Grace; her daughter, Joan Burton of Darlington; five grandchildren, Jeremy Z. Cooper of Havre de Grace, Amanda D. Hermann of West Virginia, Edward C. and Paula J. Bussey of Havre de Grace, and Donald L. Burton of West Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Z. and Jamie A. Cooper of Havre de Grace; a sister, Iva Mae Brownell of Oneonta; a brother, Mardon T. Sullivan of Watertown; a dear friend and sister-in-law, Suzie Sullivan of West Edmeston; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Boyce I. Roberts; and her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Donnell, Frederick, Herman, Robert and Bert Sullivan; and three sisters, Marie VanWaganer, Margaret Hotaling and Doris Vroman.

A memorial service will be held at the Cranberry United Methodist Church in Perryman, Md., on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, with the Pastor Glen Barrick officiating.

"Aunt Prude" was the force behind the (local) Sullivan Family Reunion carried on for many years under her direction. In accordance to her wishes, the Reunion will continue this year, with her burial in the Mount Vision Cemetery the day before the Reunion. Date and time to be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are by Mitchell-Smith Funeral Home, Havre de Grace, Md.

Edith Weinheimer

HOLLYWOOD HILLS, Calif. — Edith C. Weinheimer of Hollywood Hills, Calif., passed away at her home on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, after a brief illness.

Edith spent the early part of her life in the Bronx, New York City, and later moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she worked for Universal Studios until her retirement.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Lemere; her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and June Weinheimer of Schenevus; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Richard Weinheimer.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth Hulbert

SCHOHARIE — Elizabeth A. Hulbert, 66, of Ecker Hollow Road, formerly of Sharon Springs, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany.

Mrs. Hulbert was born in the town of Root, Montgomery County, on July 19, 1937, a daughter of Ralph and Ethel Smith Presher. She was a self-employed domestic.

Mrs. Hulbert is survived by her husband, Kenneth Hulbert; daughters, Rose (Jim) Adams, Stamford, and Melody (David) Houck, Schoharie; sons, Steven Hulbert, Fort Scott, Kan., Kenneth (Susan) Hulbert, Boonville, Mo., Warren Hulbert, Fort Scott, and Leonard (Kristi) Hulbert, Central Bridge; sister, Linda Weitz, Washington, N.J.; brothers, William Presher, Cocoa, Fla., Joseph Presher, Bushkill, Fla., Willard Presher, Bradford, Pa., Mark Presher, Tampa, Fla., and David Presher, Washington, N.J.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald; and brothers, Walter, Lynn and Frank Presher.

Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. The Rev. Warren Babcock and the Rev. Larry Majors will officiate.

A spring interment will be made in Potter Hollow Cemetery, Potter Hollow.

Edith M. Cooley

ONEONTA — Edith M. (Sinstack) Cooley, 102, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Edith was born Oct. 15, 1901, in Binghamton, the daughter of Harry and Lois (Stringham) Butts.

She married Fred R. Sinstack in 1921, and he passed away in 1958. She then married Elmer Cooley, who also predeceased her.

She worked in the cafeteria at Hartwick College and was well-known in the area for her baking and cake decorating.

She was of the Methodist faith and was a life member of the Martha Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her son, Harry, and his wife, Chris Sinstack, of Oneonta; a daughter, Lois Judd of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Steve Judd, Bonnie Robinson, David Sinstack, Jodee Kogut and Gary Sinstack; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sinstack of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a son, George Sinstack.

A graveside service, which will be announced, will be held in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marie Bassford

GARRATTSVILLE — Marie Anna Bassford, 86, went peacefully home to Jesus on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004. She was born in Weehawken, N.J., on Sept. 27, 1917, only child of James and Augusta Marie (Handelman) Pike. She was named after her two grandmothers, Marie Krupp Handelman and Anna Fick Pike.

She grew up in Union City, N.J., graduating from Emerson High School in 1936. Marie met her husband, Erwin Bassford Jr. at a dancing academy. They were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in El Paso, Texas, on June 1, 1942, while Erwin was stationed there in the United States Army. Marie spent the war years working for American Home Products in New York City as a clerk-typist.

Marie and Erwin moved to Maywood, N.J., where they raised their daughter, Barbara. In the 1960s Marie returned to secretarial work for J.J. Newberry Area Credit Office and, later, Witco Chemical Company, both of Paramus, N.J. She also did work for Erwin's business, Arrowsmith Archery Company, including fletching and cresting arrows and keeping the books. Marie and Erwin retired to Lebanon, Ore., in 1981, where they made many friends. After Erwin's death in 1989, Marie moved to Garrattsville to be with her daughter and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church and the Garrattsville Woman's Club. A quiet lady, she enjoyed chocolate, reading Christian books, her doll collection and her cat, Snoop. Her main love was crocheting, and she crocheted afghans for all her loved ones. Many of her afghans won ribbons at the Otsego County Fair.

Marie spent her final four years in the loving care of Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Besides her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Terry Moore of Garrattsville, she will be missed by her grandchildren, Melissa Smith of Burlington Flats, Lucinda and Dave Newell of Gilbertsville, Jeffery Nye and his companion, Bobbi Jo Perry of Morris; her great-grandchildren, Adina Marie and Dillon Smith, Ashley and Kyleena Newell, Taylor Nye and Kayla Perry. She also leaves two goddaughters, Jacquelyn Marie Carlesco of Shirley and Nancy Chamberlain of Lodi, N.J.

Those whom we love do indeed leave us, and when we lose them no spoken words can lessen our grief, but what Marie was can never leave us. The strength of her presence, the firmness of her convictions, the warmth of her love — these are ours always, fused with our thought and blended with our lives.

A celebration of the lives of Marie and Erwin will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

It was Marie's wish no calling hours be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the church on Tuesday.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Thomas E. Stratton

HALCOTTSVILLE — Thomas E. Stratton Jr., 60, of Halcottsville, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Jan. 2, 1944, in Pepacton, to Kenneth and Edith (Misner) Stratton.

Tom married Lynda Davis on Feb. 15, 1964, in Margaretville.

He was employed as a construction worker for 34 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Local Union 643 that is now Local 17.

A lifelong area resident, Tom was an avid fisherman, hunter, trapper and horseshoe player. He enjoyed barbecuing chicken for friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynda Stratton, and children, Tommy Jr. and wife Iris, Kathy and husband Kevin Roberts, Tiny and fiance Bill Fane; grandchildren, Ryan Sprague, Cassandra and Jamie Stratton, Brandy, Cassidy and Alyssa Fane, Melissa Wheeler, Jeremiah, Nicholas, and Samantha Roberts, and Rebecca Cortese; a great-grandson, Anthony Cortese; one brother, Kenneth Stratton, of Margaretville, many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, David and John and sisters, Vera and Karen.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Hynes Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be later in Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Contributions in memory of Thomas E. Stratton Sr., may be sent to the Halcottsville Fire Department, Halcottsville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
