Glen Edwin Meyer

DELHI — Glen Edwin Meyer, 86, of the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

He was born on July 29, 1917, in Phillipsburg, Kan., the son of William and Alice (Francis) Meyer.

Glen served as a communications chief in the United States Army during World War II. His service in the European Theatre included battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Medal for Good Conduct.

Following his military service, he settled in Delhi, where he was employed by the Delhi Telephone Company as a lineman. He was a 50 year member of the Delhi Baptist Church. Prior to military service, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Glen always enjoyed gardening, nature, reading and antique cars. His sweet, gentle nature and quick wit were apparent to all he met.

He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Glen is survived by his wife, Elva (Gregory), of the Countryside Care Center, Delhi; a daughter, Nancy Merritt of Delhi, a daughter, Melinda Gaidemak and her two sons, Jacob and Cole of Delhi, and their father, Joel Gaidemak of Red Bank, N.J.; a stepson, R. Dale Bellino, and his wife, Catherine of Emmons, son, Barry of Buford, S.C., and a daughter, Kerstin Bellino Medwin of Albany; a brother, Orrin Meyer of Indianapolis, Ind., and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery in the spring at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Elizabeth Hulbert

SCHOHARIE — Elizabeth Ann Hulbert, 66, of Ecker Hollow Road, formerly of Sharon Springs, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany.

Mrs. Hulbert was born in the town of Root, Montgomery County, on July 19, 1937, a daughter of Ralph and Ethel Smith Presher. She was a self-employed domestic.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Hulbert is survived by her husband for 48 years, Kenneth Hulbert; daughters, Rose (Jim) Adams, of Stamford, and Melody (David) Houck, of Schoharie; sons, Steven Hulbert, of Fort Scott, Kan., Kenneth Hulbert, of Boonville, Mo., Warren (Melissa) Hulbert, of Fort Scott, and Leonard (Kristi) Hulbert, Central Bridge; sister, Linda Weitz, Washington, N.J.; brothers, William Presher, Cocoa, Fla., Joseph Presher, Bushkill, Fla., Willard Presher, Bradford, Pa., Mark Presher, Tampa, Fla., David Presher, Washington, N.J., and 15 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald, and brothers, Walter, Lynn and Frank Presher.

Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 9. The Rev. Warren Babcock and the Rev. Larry Majors will officiate.

A spring interment will take place in Potter Hollow Cemetery, Potter Hollow.

Memorial contributions may be made to Schoharie County Ambulance and Rescue Squads Association (SCARSA), PO Box 948, Middleburgh, NY 12122.

Geraldine Hill

LITTLE FALLS — Geraldine Hill, 79, of Little Falls, entered into eternal rest peacefully in her sleep on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, 2004, in Folts Home, Herkimer, where she was receiving wonderful care. At the time of her passing, she had the comfort of her children at her side.

She was born on July 27, 1924, in Freys Bush, a daughter of the late John and Flora (Adams) Gardinier, and was educated in Little Falls schools. She was last employed with Snyder Apartments in Little Falls. Geraldine was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls and the church Ladies Guild. Mrs. Hill will be forever remembered by her family as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and sister.

Survivors include a son, John Hill Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Michael Pallace of Saratoga Springs and Kelly and Robert Wetherbee of West Burlington; and a brother, Robert Eckerd of Little Falls. Also surviving are six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Manson Gardinier, a half-brother, Burt Eckerd Jr., and by a sister, Audrey VanDycke.

There are no public calling hours.

Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend a Mass of Resurrection at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Albany Street, Little Falls, with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, rector, officiating.

Spring interment will be held in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills.

Kindly consider contributions in honor of Geraldine to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls. Envelopes will be available at the service on Saturday.

The family gratefully acknowledges the staff and wonderful caregivers at Folts Home, Herkimer, for their tender love and care given to Geraldine and her family.

Norman H. Knapp

NORTH PORT, Fla. — Norman H. Knapp, 83, formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with a funeral service at 5 p.m. The Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Oneonta Elm Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be later at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Ruth E. Sweet

ONEONTA — Ruth E. Sweet died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born Oct. 12, 1906, on Bailey Road, Morris, to Frank and Libbie Summers Lamb.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta and a former member of the Mount Vision and Milford Senior Citizens groups, the Grange in Oneonta and the Grange in Portlandville, the AARP and the Veteran Railway Employees Association.

Ruth was retired from the housekeeping department at the State University of New York at Oneonta.

Ruth loved her day trips around the local countryside, visiting with friends and family, playing cards and dominoes for fun and a good laugh. She had a quick wit and brought a thoughtful humor to many people. She cherished the memories of her holiday dinners with her family and will be missed by her family and caregivers, but she will live on in their memories.

Ruth is survived by her grandson, Dale Tarver of California, and nieces Mildred Parish of Oneonta and Elna Deighton of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents; husbands Warren A. Ferguson in 1983 and Harold W. Sweet in 1989; her daughter, Beverly Tarver, in 2003; and her brothers, Elmer Lamb, Fred Lamb, Ralph Lamb and Earl Lamb; and her sister, Bertha Decker.

There will be no calling hours, and a graveside service will be held in the spring at Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mabel E. Hitchcock

ONEONTA — Mabel E. Hitchcock died Feb. 8, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born June 30, 1917, in the town of Plainfield, to Samuel and Iva Osborn Crewell.

Mabel grew up in and graduated in Cherry Valley. She married Donald E. Hitchcock on Sept. 17, 1938, in Canajoharie. They moved to Cooperstown for six months before settling in Oneonta.

She was a member of the Church of God International. Mabel loved riding her bicycle, gardening, and being a homemaker, mother and grandmother.

Mabel is survived by her children and their spouses, Harriett Smith of Goodyear Lake, Laura (Richard) Gohde of Milford, Stephen (Grace) Hitchcock of Morris, Iva (John) Hurlburt of Otego, Gordon Hitchcock of Oneonta, Barbara (Michael) Thorsland of West Oneonta, Rosemary (Richard) Westcott of Davenport, Deborah Hitchcock of Oneonta, Mark (Deborah) Hitchcock of Norwich and Regina Shaffer of Dade City, Fla.; daughters-in-law, Patsy Crewell Dusavage of Putnam Valley and Eileen Hitchcock of Unadilla; sister, Dorothy Hitchcock or Cobleskill; 35 grandchildren; and 52 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Donald, on July 31, 1979, sons, Gary Crewell in 1961 and David Hitchcock in 1992, sisters, Lillian Elsworth, Elizabeth Austin and Rena Eckler, brother, Vaughn Crewell, and grandchildren, Timothy Lawyer, Dale Hitchcock, Uriah Shaffer, Abigail Hitchcock and Julie Joehanson.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the family present. Funeral service will immediately follow at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the spring in Glenwood Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the American Lung Association in Mabel's honor.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Valentine Michels

WORCESTER — Valentine F. Michels, 81, of Worcester passed away Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Brooklyn, the son of Valentine and Augusta (Gruber) Michelitsch.

Valentine was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II.

He was a cost estimator of Sperry Gyroscope in Great Neck and moved to the Worcester area in 1991.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Gate of Heaven Council in Huntington, and attended St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester.

Valentine will be dearly missed by his family who survives him, his wife of 56 years, Marie (Lobe) Michels of Worcester; two daughters, Valerie and husband Robert, Capon of Mastic Beach, and Linda and husband Mike, Fiorentino of East Worcester; grandchildren, Tracy Kimball, Carrie Kleinman, Jessica Capon, Tara and Heather Fiorentino; great-grandson, Kody Kimball; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, William Michels.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the E.J. Skinner Co., Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial with military honors will be at the East Worcester Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adam Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Mary Morgan

MARGARETVILLE — Mary Morgan, 55, of Margaretville passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1948, in Syracuse, the daughter of George Morgan and Mary Cartin.

Mary had been living at Mountainside Residential Care Center since Oct. 21, 2003.

Mary is survived by her two brothers.

Calling hour is prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Committal services will be at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Bruce Morgan

MOUNT VISION — Bruce Morgan, 50, of Mount Vision, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born on April 26, 1953, in Boonton, N.J., the son of Edward and Mary Ann (Jurkouisch) Morgan.

He married Wendy Baker on Jan. 1, 1993, in Oneonta.

Bruce served his country in the United States Army from 1982 until 1987, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

For the past nine years, he has been employed with The Daily Star, working in the mailroom.

Bruce was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club. He also enjoyed cooking in his spare time. But, most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Morgan, of Mount Vision; his mother, Mary Ann Morgan of Guilford; his daughter, Michelle Ramos and her husband, Corbett of Rockaway, N.J.; his stepdaughter, Joann Carr and her husband, Andy, of Laurens; his stepdaughter, Yvonne Wilkens and her husband, Marty, of Maryland; his stepson, Darren Platt and his wife, Nicole, of Schenevus; his stepson, Cpl. Robert Platt and his wife, Edith, of New River, N.C.

He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Morgan, and his wife, Rebecca, of Guilford; his sister, Donna (Morgan) Richmond of Guilford; 13 grandchildren, Megan, Brittany and Matthew of Rockaway, N.J., Amy and Jeremy Platt of Newark, Del., Natasha Wilkens of Maryland, Corey and Ryan Carr of Laurens, Courtney, Tyler and Sarah Platt of Schenevus, also Nicolas and Christian Michael of New River, N.C.

Also surviving are his special nieces and nephews, Vanessa, Ryan, Heather, Carrie and Caitlyn of Guilford; many aunts and uncles; his special friends, Lynn, Bill and Mary Ellen Bates and Ed and Dar Gates; also, his very special cat, Furrball, and his dog, Honest.

At Bruce's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049, in Bruce's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Jason Rothenberg

ONEONTA — Jason Beryl Rothenberg (aka Jason Raize) died suddenly in Yass, Australia.

Born July 20, 1975, Jason grew up in the Oneonta area and performed in numerous West Kortright Centre, Oneonta High School and Orpheus Theatre productions.

Following training at The American Musical & Dramatic Academy, Jason went on to become known for his roles as Pilate in the touring "Jesus Christ Superstar" and is best known as the original Simba in "The Lion King" on Broadway.

Jason used his talents to address concerns for the environment and was named an Ambassador of Goodwill for the U.N. Environment Program.

His television program "Keeping It Wild With Jason Raize" grew out of a strong desire to promote alliances between the environment and entertainment communities, and through it to show children in particular that exciting possibilities exist.

Throughout the world, Jason brought joy with his music, passion and energy; his death brings us sorrow.

Jason was predeceased by his first adoptive mother, Geraldine Bakalar Rothenberg; and his brother, Andrew Werner Rothenberg.

He is survived by his adoptive father, Robert Rothenberg of Oneonta; second adoptive mother, Sarah MacArthur of Wrentham, Mass.; sister, Lisa Williams of Poughquag; stepmother, Monet Rothenberg of Oneonta; stepfather, Jim Kidd of Wrentham, Mass.; brother-in-law, Kevin Williams; stepbrothers, Dwayne Whitney, Khary Menelik and Brandon Swain; and stepsisters, Haabiba Whitney and Nicole Swain.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 12 Ford Ave., Oneonta. All are welcome to attend and to share a story, poem, reading or song. You may bring a copy of a photo or a written story for a memorial scrapbook.

Dorothea Hicks

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Dorothea (Walker) Hicks, 88, born on March 25, 1915, the daughter of John A. and Nora (Utter) Walker, in East Springfield, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004.

Mrs. Hicks attended and graduated from East Springfield Central School, East Springfield, in 1933. After graduation, she took Child Nurse's Training in Albany.

She worked as a child nurse in various homes.

On Aug. 8, 1942, she married Paul S. Hicks in Hicksville. She traveled with Paul all over the world throughout his military career.

She will be remembered by her many friends for her expertise as an excellent hostess and she loved to entertain. She was an avid golfer and won many tournaments throughout Texas. She was of the Methodist faith and attended services at Center Chapel at Fort Bliss. She retired with her husband to El Paso in 1969.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband Col. (Ret.) Paul S. Hicks on May 31, 2003; her parents; and two brothers, Robert Walker and John Walker. Also her brothers-in-law, Fabian Bressett, Willis Keller and Victor Helmes; sister-in-law, Iva Walker; and one nephew, Robert Walker.

She is survived by her three sisters, Iva N. Bressett, Ruth Keller and Alta Helmes; and one brother, Kenneth Walker and a sister-in-law, Catherine Walker, all of New York state; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to thank Mr. and Mrs. John Mills and Sigrid Gourley for their care and concern for Mrs. Hicks during the past several months.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to Hospice of VNA, or the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held at Kaster-Maxon & Furrell Funeral Home Chapel, 8817 Dyer St., Texas, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Center Chapel No. 1 at Fort Bliss, Texas, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Charles Whitbeck

FRANKLIN — Charles L. Whitbeck, 88, of Franklin passed away suddenly on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 21, 1915, in Merrickville, (town of Franklin), the son of Orlo and Lottie (Davie) Whitbeck.

He married Dorothy E. Denny on Oct. 9, 1948, and they spent 35 loving years together. Dorothy passed away on July 25, 1984.

In earlier years he worked on the family farm and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), where he was a group leader.

For a period of 28 years, Charles worked as a machinist at ECD Bendix in Sidney. Prior to that he worked for General Electric.

After his retirement from Bendix in 1978, he and his wife, Dorothy, enjoyed several winters at their home in Florida.

Charles' greatest joys in life were hunting, fishing, gardening, and providing and caring for his family. His outdoor sportsmen activities were shared with his father-in-law and best friend, Elmer Denny. He loved nature and taking his family on walks in the woods and along the Ouleout.

He and his wife, Dorothy, were devoted to their daughters and their daughters, in turn, were devoted to them.

Charles is survived by two daughters, Diane Whitbeck of Columbus, Ohio, and Donna Whitbeck of Franklin; his present wife, Florence Whitbeck, of Sidney; nephews and cousins; and a few lifelong friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Russell Whitbeck; and his beloved pet dog, Teddy.

A graveside service, which will be announced at a later time, will be held in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

There will be no calling hours.

The family prefers memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
