Illianna Boynton

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Illianna "Lily" Boynton, 7, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after a long illness with cancer.

Lily was born Aug. 20, 1996, in Oneonta, the daughter of Casey Boynton and Tonya Davenport.

Lily was in the first grade at Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport.

She is survived by her grandparents, Ronald and Helen Boynton, of Charlotteville; her father, Casey, and her stepmother, Amanda Boynton, of Otego; sisters, Felicity Boynton and Carissa Fernia; mother, Tonya Davenport of Middleburgh; grandparents, Don and Tammy Davenport of Central Bridge and Regina Bailey of Middleburgh; godparents, Trina and Jeff Lengel of Charlotteville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Thank you to everyone for your help, support, and love you have shown us and Lily and for just being there in our darkest hours. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 615 Main St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Jennifer Dyer officiating.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rosy Love, in care of Pat Hedgeman, 16 Locust Park, Albany, NY 12205.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

LeRoy Geertgens

MOUNT UPTON — Mr. LeRoy M. Geertgens, 89, a longtime resident of Mount Upton, passed away early Wednesday morning, Feb. 11, 2004, at the Otsego County Nursing Home in Cooperstown.

One of 15 children, Lee was born on June 5, 1914, in Maltby, S.D., a son of the late Jacob and Helena (Herbster) Geertgens.

On Sept. 23, 1938, he married Florence Franks. Mrs. Geertgens died in November 1988, shortly after she and Lee had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

At the age of 4, Lee and his family moved to Franklin, where they established a family farm. When Lee was 14, he assumed the operation of that farm until the time of his marriage. He and Florence moved to Bainbridge and a year later to Rockdale, where he continued dairy farming.

Following the sale of the Rockdale farm in July of 1958, he and his family moved to Mount Upton where Lee was employed as a custodian at the Mount Upton Elementary School. During his 25-year employment at the school, he developed a very close affection for the staff and students there. He retired in 1983.

Lee was actively involved in the Mount Upton United Methodist Church where he was a longtime usher. He was also a key volunteer for many other church activities, often manning the fair food booth and cooking for the church's pancake breakfasts.

For over 35 years he was an active member of the Borden Hose Company of Mount Upton, serving on its emergency squad and as a very reliable member of the fire police unit. For the past six years he has resided at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.

He is survived by two sons, David Geertgens of Unadilla, and Douglas G. Geertgens and his wife, Chris, of Cooperstown; and one daughter, Jeanette Braungard and her husband, Gary, of Vestal; a daughter-in-law, Betty Geertgens of Wells Bridge; seven grandchildren, Dr. Pamela Kantorowski of Aberdeen, N.C., Eric Geertgens of Poughkeepsie, Kristen Berry of Chandler, Ariz., Timothy Geertgens of Baldwinsville, Gregory Geertgens of Snellville, Ga., Paul Geertgens of Alpharetta, Ga., and Sean Berry of Gilbert, Ariz.; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glenn Geertgens of Franklin, and Paul Geertgens and his wife, Arletta, of Scotia; three sisters, Florence Simmons of Albany, Frances Green and her husband, Martin of Inverness, Fla., Gladys Tiffany of Norwich; a brother-in-law, Roger Franks of Oneonta; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Turtur of Santa Monica, Calif., and Helen Longacre of Ocean City, N.J.; and many nieces, nephews and cousin.

In addition to his wife, Florence, he was predeceased by four brothers, Richard, Benjamin, Earl and Flemming; and five sisters, Irene Fisher, Lucille Stork, Dorothy Adamo, Luella Shaw and Marion Geertgens.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Chestnut Street and Glen Avenue, with the Rev. Sundar R. Samuel, pastor, and the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church, co-officiating.

Burial will take place later this spring in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made in LeRoy's name to the Memorial Fund of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church, PO Box 119, Mount Upton, NY 13809.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown.

John P. Ballo II

UNADILLA — John P. Ballo II, a former resident of Beacon, died Feb. 10, 2004, at his home in Unadilla.

Born April 12, 1950, in Newburgh, he was the son of John P. Ballo, of Beacon, and the late Emma Ballo.

He was a graduate of St. Joachim's Parochial School, Beacon High and Dutchess Community College, the U.S. Army/F.B.I. Hazardous Device School at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala., and the B.A.T.F. Advance Explosives Investigation School, Glynco, Ga.

After serving 20 years on the Beacon Police Department he retired at the rank of sergeant. In Unadilla he was appointed Special Deputy of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, and owned and managed B.L.A.S.T. (Ballo Land, Air, Sea, Training) and was an explosives consultant and trainer.

He was the past director of Region V (the nine-northeastern states) of the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators, and a member of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, the (New York) Upstate Bomb Squad Commanders Group and a member of the NRA.

Surviving are his adored wife of 16 years, Robin Romanelli Ballo; his father, John P. Ballo and his wife, Patricia, of Beacon; sisters, Alison MacAvery and her husband, Jeffrey, and Susan Borghard and her husband, Andrew, both of Fishkill; stepbrothers, Michael Saracelli and his wife, Patricia, of Newport News, Va., and Anthony Saracelli and his wife, Holly, of Garner, N.C. Also father and mother-in-law, Vincent and Maylin Romanelli of New Jersey; brother-in-law, Dr. Vincent Romanelli and his wife, Patricia, of Illinois; sisters-in-law, Sandy Romanelli Ticehurst and her husband, Jerry, of New Jersey, Lisa Romanelli of Bronxville, and Gail Romanelli Archer and her husband, Kevin, of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews. John is also survived by his beloved Golden Retrievers, Ensign, Nitroglycerin and Emmy-Mae; and cat, Gelatin.

Private services will be conducted in Unadilla. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. Joachim's Church in Beacon.

To honor John's compassion and love for animals, the family truly requests memorial donations be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Allan L. Davidson

WALTON — Allan Lloyd Davidson, 78, of North Street, Walton, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Basset Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1925, in Bovina, the son of Fletcher and Lois (Ormiston) Davidson.

He married Patricia Despaw on April 14, 1954, in White Plains. She predeceased him in 1987.

A 1943 graduate of Delaware Academy, Allan was a World War II and Korean War veteran.

He was employed as a union electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers based in Binghamton.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Madriz of Escondido, Calif.; a son, Bruce Davidson, and his wife, Sue, of Scranton, Pa.; a daughter, Cindy Davidson of Walton; a daughter, Mary Jane Davidson, and her husband, Roger Gray, of Walton; a son, Michael Davidson, and his wife, Kelly, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Davidson of San Diego, Calif.; and a brother, Richard Davidson of Chula Vista, Calif.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at the Walton United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James F. Martin officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Edward A. Sienicki

WILMINGTON, Del. — Edward A. Sienicki, Ph.D. of Sedgley Farms, passed away on Feb. 7, 2004, in the St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Franklin, on July 4, 1919, to the late Alex and Veronica Sienicki.

Dr. Sienicki was a graduate of Syracuse University and the University of Illinois with a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

He was employed by the State of Delaware as Director of the Division of Environmental Control. Dr. Sienicki also worked as a chemist for DuPont Company and Thiokol Chemical as Group Head in rocket experiments. He was a member of several scientific associations, and an Air Force pilot in World War II.

Surviving him are his wife, Mary A. Sienicki; one daughter, Deborah A. Schiffer and her husband, Michael, of Coronado, Calif.; one son, Robert E. Sienicki and his wife, Myrna W., of Sedona, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Michael Schiffer Jr., Caroline Schiffer, Michael R. Sienicki and A.J. Aurit; one sister, Francis Baker of Oneonta.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your favorite charity.

Anne T. Lossi

ONEONTA — Anne T. Lossi, 80, of Oneonta passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 26, 1924, in Binghamton, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Resman.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis E. Lossi in 1971.

When Anne first came to Oneonta she was employed as a beautician at Bresee's Oneonta Department Store. She later owned and operated Anne's Beauty Shop on the West Davenport Road until 1975. After closing her beauty shop, she was employed by Mrs. Augusta Clark of Cooperstown and Westbury, Long Island, as her personal cook.

After Mrs. Clark's passing, Anne went to work at St. Mary's Rectory, Oneonta, as the Parish Cook. The Priests and staff of St. Mary's enjoyed many years of Anne's special baked goods until her retirement after her many years of rewarding, enjoyable employment.

After her retirement, she spent numerous hours sewing and doing needle work, creating special gifts for everyone she loved, and dedicating every waking moment to spending time with her grandchildren.

She was their special "Meema and Grandmaway." She taught them the secret family recipes, Tina how to sew and crochet, and Mark how to hit a baseball.

Anne enjoyed special family times with Mary Jane and Bob Crandall, Rhonda, Doug, Deidre and Cheryl Willies; particularly on her favorite holiday of Christmas.

Anne is survived by her sons, Louis J. Lossi of Herndon, Va., and Mark A. Lossi, and wife, Mary, of Oneonta; her sister, Joan Harrington of Ithaca; her grandchildren (the loves of her life) Mark D. and Kristina M. Lossi of Oneonta; nephew, Jerry Losie and wife, Connie, of Oneonta; as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Her very dear friends, Fran and Ginny Lynch of Otego, whom she spent many hours of Oneonta Little League Auxiliary time building wonderful friendships and memories; and their daughter, Deb Manzer and husband, Rick, whom she spent many Sunday dinners with; and her special friends, Richard and Margo Russell of Kirkwood, whose friendship provided her with lifelong happiness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Bertel A. Ahlqvist

MOUNT VISION - Bertel A. Ahlqvist (Bert), 77, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 11, 2004, with members of his family by his side.

Bert was born on July 17, 1926, the son of Edvin and Agda (Widjeskog) Ahlqvist in the Bronx.

Bert moved with his family to Finland at the age of 3, but returned to the United States in April 1949. He lived in Mount Vision briefly and then moved to Staten Island, where he met and married his wife, Margaret (Sahlke) Ahlqvist on March 15, 1952. They moved to Laurens in 1975, and to Mount Vision in 1985.

Over the years, Bert was a blacksmith, farmer, and landlord, but his life's work was as a carpenter and contractor. With his son Bob, he built many homes both in Staten Island and the Laurens area, including his own.

His lifelong interest in sports began in Finland, where he actively participated in track and field and competitive cross-country skiing.

In his later years, he enjoyed gardening, bird watching, singing, woodworking and carving, and watching sports both locally and on television.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Margaret; his four children, Bob and his companion, Norma, of West Laurens, Dr. Linda Walsh and her husband, Jeff, of Glen Arm, Md., Karen Mann and her husband, Robert, of Laurens, and Eric Ahlqvist of Mount Vision.

Bert also had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, Laura and Ryan Ahlqvist, Katie and Christie Walsh, Nathan, Stephanie and Ashley Mann, and Emily Ahlqvist. He also has a great-grandchild, Lawrance, and another due in April.

Also surviving is a brother, Karl and his wife, Ruth, of Oneonta; a sister, Doris and her husband, Ragnar, of Terjarv, Finland; and several nieces and nephews.

Bert was predeceased by a brother, Raymond, whose wife, Eileen resides in Florida.

Bert was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Debbie and Judy at FoxCare Lab and to Mary and Donette at Ambulatory Surgery at A.O Fox Memorial Hospital.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Funeral service will be at Atonement Lutheran Church, Oneonta at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Burial in Mount Vision Cemetery will be performed in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oneonta.

Harold J. Loson Jr.

MARYLAND — Mr. Harold (Hank) Loson Jr., 61, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Loved and respected by his family, friends, and community, Hank was known for his warm smile, his kindness, and his enjoyment of a good prank.

Hank was born and raised on Long Island. He graduated from New York Tech with a degree in culinary arts.

In 1969, he and his wife, Judith, moved to Maryland, to raise their family and build a life in the beauty of upstate New York.

The gift of a Hereford on Hank's birthday one year led to the creation of a small farm.

Over the years Hank and Judy raised many generations of Herefords, horses, and dogs, and cared for a multitude of traveling cats, deer, and other wayward animals.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Harold Loson Sr., Hank graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, served for three years in the Merchant Marines, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, and served 20 years in the National Guard.

He was a member of the Schenevus Volunteer Fire Department, where he served most recently as treasurer. For several years he made the rounds of the area as the county Tax Assessor.

He was employed as a watch engineer at Verizon for 33 years, where he kept his co-workers entertained and on their toes.

Hank is survived by his loving wife, Judith; his daughters, Jennifer and son-in-law, William, and his daughter, Lisa and son-in-law, John; his mother, Winifred; his sisters, Kit, Sarah, Freddie, Mimi and Patty; and his nieces, nephews and extended family.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Allison Jay Bookhout, Hospice chaplain, officiating.

Friends are invited to call on Friday evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harold J. Loson Jr., may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Myrtha L. Stark

GILBERTSVILLE — Myrtha L. Stark, 93, of Gilbertsville, a loving and devoted mother, passed away peacefully at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She had most recently resided at the Graceview Manor in Otego.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1911, in the town of Butternuts, the daughter of Frank and Ida (Lilley) Greene.

She married Fred W. Stark on May 14, 1940. He predeceased her on March 12, 1995.

Myrtha grew up in Gilbertsville and attended school there. She also attended Morrisville College for a year.

For a short while before her marriage, she resided in Afton, and after her marriage, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Gilbertsville First Baptist Church since 1925, serving on the A.B.W. Nationally and also at the local church level, holding positions in both. She was devoted to her church and her mission and White Cross work. She had also been a longtime junior church and Sunday School Teacher.

She was a 4-H leader for 13 years where many will remember her sharing her talents while teaching serving and baking skills. She was also extremely skilled at sewing, knitting and handwork.

Myrtha is survived by her children, Ascenith Christian and husband Ronald of Mount Upton, Lawrence Stark of Virginia, Elmond Stark of Sidney, Anita Kaler of Nassau, Annabeth Coon of Gilbertsville; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Fred, she was predeceased by her sisters, Lilley Musson and Leona Taylor; a brother, Elmond Greene, a daughter, Allean; a son, John; two grandsons, Terry Christian and Brad Coon; and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Stark.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, from 1 p.m. until funeral service time at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gilbertsville.

Officiating at the funeral will be the Rev. Randolph Palada.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
