Margaret Osterhoudt

FLEISCHMANNS — Margaret Osterhoudt, 76, of Schneider Avenue, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

She had been a teacher's aide in the Margaretville schools for many years. She was an avid reader, and greatly enjoyed sports. She was born May 28, 1927, in Newburgh.

Surviving are her husband, Donald; a daughter, Meganne, of Fleischmanns; and a son, Richard, of Margaretville; a stepdaughter, Donna Gould, of Greenfield, Ind.; one grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia, (845) 688-5500.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Osterhoudt will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt as celebrant.

Spring interment in the Bedell Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaretville School Dollars for Scholars Program, PO Box 319, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Charles Martin

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Charles Martin, 83, of Cooperstown died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2004, at The Meadows.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1920, in Brownsville, Pa., a son of Alfred Brock and Georgia L. (nee Williams) Martin.

He married Hildegard Werb on March 24, 1972, in Henderson Township, North Carolina. Raised in Pennsylvania, Mr. Martin attended Windber High School and later moved to Idaho, where he was employed in the construction of tunnels.

On Nov. 24, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II. A soldier in Company A, 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, he also served with the 315th Engineer Battalion and the 300th Infantry and saw action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Czechoslovakia.

A participant in the Invasion of Normandy, he received a Purple Heart and five Battle Stars on Arrowhead for his efforts. He was also the recipient of the American Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with Bronze Service Arrowhead.

During his time in the service, he was involved with general construction work such as building bridges, barracks and roads, clearing enemy minefields and operating a storm boat in the assault of rivers. He received his honorable discharge on Oct. 28, 1945.

Due to the educational opportunities offered by the Seafarer's International Union, Mr. Martin attained a position as Chief Marine Engineer and was employed for many years by the American Maritime Officers Union, based in Brooklyn. He retired at the age of 65, but was called out of retirement in 1990 to take charge of a ship carrying troops and supplies for the Gulf War.

A resident of Cooperstown for the past 20 years, he was a Life Member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

Throughout his life, Mr. Martin traveled the world, seeing and experiencing many places and peoples, and had a passion for anything to do with the sea, sailing and ships.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Hildegard, of Cooperstown; one daughter, Mrs. Kristinia E. Anderson of Cooperstown and her husband, Daniel; two sons, Kenneth Martin and his partner, Curt Winkle, of Chicago, Ill., and Denis Werb and his wife, Steffi, of Germany; four grandchildren, Barbara Austin and Krista Martinez of California, and Daniel Werb and Franzeska Werb of Germany; and four great-grandchildren.

At the request of Mr. Martin and his family, there will be no calling hours or services.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Herman Menke

DELHI — Herman Menke, 94, of Delhi went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1909, in Horpel, Germany, the son of Henry and Marie (Jobmann) Menke.

He married Elfriede Muller on March 4, 1940, in Brazil.

In 1924, Herman's family settled in Brazil, South America. Six years later in 1930, they came to the United States. Spending many years in the Delaware County area, Herman and his wife, Elfriede, were farmers in Bovina for a short time. They eventually settled on Peakes Brook Road in Delhi where they farmed for 36 years.

Herman loved to hunt, fish, take long walks and play cards with his family and many friends.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi since it was founded.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elfriede; his children, Hilda and Robin Turner of Hobart, Gertrude and Stewart Rosa of Apalachin, Herman and Barbara Menke of Treadwell and Paul and Candice Menke of Delhi; his grandchildren, Damon and Tina Stewart, Jay and Edie Stewart, Christopher and Melissa Rosa, Todd and Sarah Rosa, Scott and Jennifer Rosa, Sarah and Jon Macaluso, Rob and Holly Menke, Selena, Mindy and Morgan Menke; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Matilde Rabeler; a sister-in-law, Frieda Menke; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Leland Priscott; a brother, Henry Menke; and a brother-in-law, Paul Rabeler.

Funeral services in celebration of Herman's life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi with the Rev. John Priest officiating.

Family and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make memorial contributions in Herman's memory are kindly asked to consider the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Andes Road, Delhi, NY 13753 or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Frances Grosfent

WORCESTER — Frances Grosfent, 95, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 27, 1908, in Worcester, the daughter of William and Eveline (Henness) Odell.

She married Frank Grosfent Jr. on June 10, 1942, in Worcester. He predeceased her on Dec. 29, 1974.

Mrs. Grosfent was a member of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Grosfent of Worcester, and Alta and husband Norman Chase of Worcester; a grandson, David and wife Lynn Chase of Worcester; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Odell of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Loretta Adee, Lana Vaughn and Marjorie Odell; and a brother Walter Odell.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the E.J. Skinner Co., Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A celebration of her life will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the First Baptist Church, Monitor Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester at a later date.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Library Fund, PO Box 187, Schenevus, NY 12155 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

F. Riemenschneider

DeLANCEY — Fritz Riemenschneider, 87, of East Terry Clove Road, DeLancey, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at home.

He was born on April 24, 1916, in Bremen, Germany, the son of Adolf and Johanna (Schwarze) Riemenschneider.

He married Bertha Brandt 63 years ago in Bremen, Germany. She survives at home in Port Jefferson.

A 20 year resident of Rocky Point, Long Island, Fritz came to the United States in 1952. While residing in Long Island, he was employed by IH Hoe and the American Bank Note Company, both located in Bronx. He also worked for Strawberry Press.

He was a member of the 9th District Zschokke Masons.

In July of 2002, due to heath problems, he moved to the DeLancey area to be closer to his family.

He is survived by three sons; a daughter; daughters-in-law; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Fritz's memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Main Street, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Adele E. Davids

STAMFORD — Adele E. Davids of Stamford died at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta on Feb. 16, 2004, of complications from coronary heart disease.

Adele Florence Conway Erhardt Davids was born in the Bronx on Sept. 3, 1915, the daughter of August and Florence (Heuer) Conway.

She was educated in New York City at Evander Childs High School, Hunter College and Lenox Hospital School of Nursing.

She was a records management specialist in New York City, and retired as the Manager of Legal Records for New York Telephone Company in 1977.

Mrs. Davids was a member and Past Matron of Irving and Utsayantha Chapters, Order of the Easter Star, and was currently a member of Mountain Star Oasis Chapter No. 237 O.E.S. in Windham. She served as President of the Board of the Stamford Library Association, an active member and former officer of Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel, and was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church.

She was married to John Erhardt of Dobbs Ferry, who passed away in 1967, and then Norman Davids, who was also her brother-in-law, of Stamford; he passed away in 1979.

She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothea Conway Davids; and her brother, Alan C. Conway, both of Stamford.

She is survived by two stepsons, also her nephews, Gordon A. Davids of Severna Park, Md., and Robert N. Davids of St. Albans, Maine; one nephew, Paul L. Conway of Leavenworth, Kan.; a niece, Susan Conway Smith of Oneonta; grandnephews William G. Davids of Bangor, Maine, and Brian R. Davids of Columbia, Md.; grandnieces Elizabeth Davids Mullis of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, and Rebecca Davids Martin of Ellicott City, Md.; great-grandnephew and niece Jonathan Mullis of Dover-Foxcroft, and Leila Davids of Bangor, Maine.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. with an Eastern Star Service to commence at 8 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Stamford United Methodist Church, Main Street, Stamford, with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating. Burial will be in Stamford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions in the memory of Adele Davids be made to the Stamford Fire Department Rescue Squad or to the Stamford Library Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Margery W. Bolton

WALTON — Margery W. Bolton of Walton, a lifelong resident, died on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Delaware Valley Hospital. She was 83.

Mrs. Bolton was born July 10, 1920, in Walton, to George F. and Francis Peck White.

She was educated in Walton, graduating from Walton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in English from Syracuse University.

Mrs. Bolton was married to Donald R. Bolton, who predeceased her in 1996.

She was a former member of the William B. Ogden Free Library Board and a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Walton.

Mrs. Bolton is survived by her children, George and Peggy of Walton, Paul and Nancy Hess of Arlington, Va., and Elizabeth Bolton of Lansing. She is also survived by five grandchildren.

There will be a graveside memorial service in the spring.

Donations to the William B. Ogden Free Library, 42 Gardiner Place, Walton, NY 13856 in her name would be appreciated.

Marlea C. Hickling

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Marlea C. Hickling, 64, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004.

She was born in New Berlin to parents Jacob and Beatrice (Dillworth) Willems.

Mrs. Hickling moved to Florida in 1963, from Edmeston. She was united in marriage to Anthony M. Hickling on Nov. 15, 1958, in Burlington Flats.

Mrs. Hickling was former owner and operator of a poultry farm and for several years has owned and operated Hickling Feed, Inc. in Samsula. While living in New York, she was employed by the New York Central Insurance Company.

Mrs. Hickling was a devout Christian. Her strong faith was a symbol of strength and inspiration to her family and a host of friends. She will be sadly missed.

Mrs. Hickling is survived by her beloved and devoted husband, Anthony M.; two sons, Scott and Darryl (Sandy) Hickling; daughter, Tricia (Bom) Huie, all of New Smyrna Beach; brother, Fred (Patti) Willems; sister, Johanna (Len) Bird; six grandchildren, Ashley Houle, Jarrod and Dylon Huie, Dana Hickling, all of New Smyrna Beach, and Russell and Michelle Hickling of Port Orange, Fla.; niece, Cynthia Bird; and three nephews, Michael Bird and Gregory and Brian Willems.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Tracie Lynn, who died Dec. 9, 1972.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach Chapel with the Rev. Michael Smith, South Haven Christian Church, Daytona Beach, officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Samsula Baptist Church, 223 N. Samsula Drive, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168 or South Haven Christian Church, 2430 Tomoka Farms Road, Daytona Beach, FL 32128.

Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 406 S. Orange St., New Smyrna Beach, is in charge of arrangements.

Paula Vandervort

SIDNEY — Paula Price Vandervort, surrounded by her loving family, entered the gates of heaven to join her father and mother, John and Lillian Price, her daughter, Nancy Brown, and her daughter-in-law, Chiiko Dean, on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.

She was born on July 5, 1919, in Auburn. Her family moved to Sidney Center in 1929. She graduated from Sidney Central Schools in 1937.

She married Frank Dean in 1939. She later married Thurston Vandervort in July 1948, and moved to Sidney.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Thurston; and her children, Frank Dean of Westport, Wash., Sue (Don) Sylor of Dansville, Karen (Harvey) Shapiro of Binghamton, and Kris (Jackie) Vandervort of Sidney; son-in-law, Milton Brown of Kirkland, Wash.; her sister, Milly Jo Marshall of Kings City, Ore.; her brother, John Price of Novato, Calif.; grandchildren, Edwin (Jonelle) Dean, Kevin Dean, Jim (Colleen) Brown, Mike (Francesca) Brown, Brian, Stephanie and Andrew Lawniczek, Kristen (John) Figary, Kelly Vandervort, Carrie (Tom) Frazier, and Marc Sylor, and Sarah and Joe Shapiro; also five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In her younger years, Paula was the leader of the Junior League, a member of the Drama Club and the Glee Club, and a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She attended LaSalle Jr. College in Boston, and Ridley Lowell Business School in Binghamton.

She worked for several years as office manager for John Price and the Maywood Press, publishing articles in over 300 newspapers. Later, along with being a homemaker and mother, Paula worked in the cafeteria at Sidney Center Elementary School, as the postmaster at the Sidney Center Post Office, as the secretary of the First Congregational Church in Sidney, and as the cook for the Sidney Day Care Center. In her later years she was the principal guardian and caregiver of her parents and made several trips to the West coast to visit family.

For many years, Paula was actively involved with the Bicentennial Rhythm Belles and taught Sunday School at the First Congregational Church in Sidney. She was instrumental in starting the Old Home Days in Sidney Center. She was an active member of the Sidney United Methodist Church until her health began to decline.

She gave to her community unselfishly in many ways and will be remembered fondly by all whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Sidney at 1:30 p.m.

Those who wish may make donations in Paula's memory to the Sidney United Methodist Church or Lourdes Hospice Program, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Helen Viola Daniels

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Helen Viola (Boise) Daniels, 76, longtime resident of Daniels Road (Pat Farley Road), South New Berlin, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 16, 2004, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sherburne on Feb. 26, 1927, Helen was the daughter of John W. and Viola Mae (King) Boise.

On July 25, 1946, in Endicott, she married John Daniels, who survives.

Helen and her family made their home on the family farm on the Daniels Road for many years, and were still active in the farm operation when they retired in 1989. Helen had also worked away from the farm over the years, including employment at Chenango Memorial Hospital, the Slipper Factory in New Berlin, Norwich Shoe Company, and Quality Care in Norwich, and had done baby-sitting in her home on the farm.

She was always available to help anyone in need of a helping hand. To relax in her spare time, Helen liked putting puzzles together and working the word search puzzles in magazines.

She was a longtime member of the South New Berlin Baptist Church, a past member of the Rebekah's Lodge of South New Berlin and the South New Berlin Auxiliary. She had taught Sunday School in the Rose Bud Church, and had charge of the nursery at the Holmesville Baptist Church.

Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Daniels, of South New Berlin; by her sons, David Daniels and wife, Nola, of Norwich, and Herbert Daniels of South New Berlin; by her grandchildren, John Daniels of Norwich, Sherry Garner and husband, Lee, of Texas, and Vicki Haggerty and husband, Greg, of South New Berlin; and her great-grandchildren, Madison Leigh Garner, Brian James Haggerty, and James Michael Haggerty. Also surviving are her sister and brother, Gladys Edwards of Cherry Valley, and John Boise of Brown Mills, N.J.; and her sister-in-law, Marjorie Boise of South New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Helen was predeceased by her grandson, Brian Daniels; and her brother, William Boise.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services for Helen will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with Kurt Funke, pastor of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin.
