Herman Menke
DELHI — Herman Menke, 94, of Delhi went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1909, in Horpel, Germany, the son of Henry and Marie (Jobmann) Menke.
He married Elfriede Muller on March 4, 1940, in Brazil.
In 1924, Herman's family settled in Brazil, South America. Six years later in 1930, they came to the United States. Spending many years in the Delaware County area, Herman and his wife, Elfriede, were farmers in Bovina for a short time. They eventually settled on Peakes Brook Road in Delhi where they farmed for 36 years.
Herman loved to hunt, fish, take long walks and play cards with his family and many friends.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi since it was founded.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elfriede; his children, Hilda and Robin Turner of Hobart, Gertrude and Stewart Rosa of Apalachin, Herman and Barbara Menke of Treadwell and Paul and Candice Menke of Delhi; his grandchildren, Damon and Tina Stewart, Jay and Edie Stewart, Christopher and Melissa Rosa, Todd and Sarah Rosa, Scott and Jennifer Rosa, Sarah and Jon Macaluso, Rob and Holly Menke, Selena, Mindy and Morgan Menke; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Matilde Rabeler; a sister-in-law, Frieda Menke; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Leland Priscott; a brother, Henry Menke; and a brother-in-law, Paul Rabeler.
Funeral services in celebration of Herman's life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi with the Rev. John Priest officiating.
Family and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Burial will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Enrique Gonzalez
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Enrique Gonzalez, 60, of Averill Road in Cooperstown died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.
Enrique, who was also known to his close friends as "Rippy," was born in Puerto Rico on Nov. 30, 1943.
The following is a brief history of Mr. Gonzalez's past as described by his loving caretakers at the Upstate Homes Averill Road IRA.
"Enrique lived at the Upstate Homes Averill Road IRA and had attended Day Habilitation services at the Upstate Home Alice Loomis Center before transferring to the ARC Otsego's Hartwick Day Treatment when his health began to decline.
"He enjoyed being a vital part of his surrounding community and had worked in various locations as a volunteer over the past few years as part of his day habilitation programs. He loved animals and had volunteered at our local SPCA, taking homemade dog biscuits to the shelter, and assisted with grooming the animals.
"He will be most remembered for his devilish smile and his wonderful sense of humor. He often spoke in his native Espanol and enjoyed it when others tried to speak to him in Spanish, often fracturing the language, often making him laugh and shake his head. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, for over the years he touched many of our lives, and we are all the better for having known him.
"He is survived by his housemates and the staffing team of the Averill Road IRA in Cooperstown; his house cats; and many friends at the Upstate Homes, the ARC Otsego, and his surrounding community. We will all miss our 'Rippy.'"
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Myrtle E. Dent
DAVENPORT — Myrtle E. Dent, 90, of Davenport died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Grand Gorge, the daughter of James and Laura (McKee) Barber.
She married Joseph H. Dent in New City, on April 9, 1938. He predeceased her in December 1997.
Mrs. Dent was a graduate of Hobart High School in the Class of 1931; a member of the West Davenport Baptist Church; Davenport Historical Society; a 4-H Leader in Delaware County for many years; and a member of the Davenport Center Grange.
Surviving are: Myrtle's eight children, Harriet (Ronald) Shipman, Mina Austin (Harold Squire), Irwin (Jacqueline) Dent, Charles (Margaret) Dent, John Dent, Ruth (Ira) Fyfe, Janet (Francis) Ouimet, and Virginia (Thomas) Donnelly; her grandchildren, Robert (Barbara) Shipman, Laura Shipman (Thomas Boeher), Harriet (Kevin) Smith, MaDonna (Paul) Staiber, Harold (Jin) Austin III, Edward Squire, Joseph (Jane) Dent, Melody (Jeff) Young, Laurie (Todd) Burrows, Eric (Alison) Miller, Jeffrey (Aimee) Dent, Hollie Jo (Benjamin) Cooper, Jill Dent, Sara Dent, Ira (Dawn) Fyfe III, David Fyfe (Jenifer Yost), Matthew Ouimet, Nathena Ouimet, Nathan Donnelly, Christopher Donnelly and Benjamen Donnelly; and great-grandchildren, Megan Shipman, Michaela Shipman, Daniel Boeher, Dana Boeher, Michelle Smith, Lisa Staiber, Linda Staiber, Harold (Brett) Austin IV, Paul Dufrain, Mia Austin, Jordyn Squire, Abigail Dent, William Dent, Aaron Dent, Ashley Young, Lucas Burrows, Daniel Dent, Shelby Cooper, Tyler Cooper, Nicholas Fyfe, Evan Fyfe and Emily Fyfe.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; a great-granddaughter, Casie Young; and her brothers and sisters, Albert (Mike) Hadon, Mildred Smith, Elizabeth Kumpf, Dorothy Collier, Harold Barber, Helen Truesdell and William Barber.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at West Davenport Baptist Church, West Davenport, with Pastor John Osterhout and Henry Geerken officiating. The family will greet friends in a gathering at the church following the service at 12:30 p.m.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the West Davenport Baptist Church or the Davenport Historical Society.

John Hedman
BAINBRIDGE — John "Jack" Hedman, 69, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney, with his children by his side.
He was born on July 23, 1934, in Cooperstown, the son of Herbert and Florence (Kough) Hedman.
Jack was a three-year Vietnam veteran and served 14 years in the United States Army.
He had many jobs, including farm work, construction, sanitation owner and devoted bartender for a number of years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 183 of Sidney.
He is survived by his children, James and Angela Hedman of Davenport, John and Geina Hedman of Hunter, Jerry Hedman and Pamela Barrows of Afton, Joann Hedman and Christopher Gardner of Jefferson, Brian and Star Hedman of Bainbridge, and Dawn and Lynn Wilcox of Sidney; seven grandchildren, Brett, Jerry Jr., Kathryn, Robert, Terence, Tommy and Jessica; brothers and sisters, Paul and Bernice Lavine of Phoenix Mills, Rosalyn McNeilly of Delhi, Shirley Bliss of Oneonta, and Christine Klugh of Bainbridge; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Betty Buttler; and a brother, Robert Hedman Sr.
There will be no funeral services.
There will be a celebration of his life at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at the American Legion Post 183 in Sidney.
Maurice Carpenter
HAVERTOWN, Pa. — Mr. Maurice H. Carpenter, 97 years old, of Havertown, Pa., and formerly of Delhi, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Broomall, Pa.
He was born on July 10, 1906, in Delhi.
He married Jeannette D. Carpenter (nee Dutcher), she survives him.
He had 12 years of education. From 1968-1972, he was an assistant to the Athletic Director of State University of New York, Education Industry.
He was a master sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers 28th Division, Pennsylvania. He landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was a veteran.
In his early years, he served as a volunteer firefighter in the Delhi Volunteer Fire Department. He was also an active coach of the Little League Team sponsored by Maxwell Gulf Service in Delhi.
Mr. Carpenter was the Chief of Police for 10 years during the 1950s in Delhi. While serving as an early police officer, he would receive notification of an emergency call via red lights located throughout the town of Delhi and he would then find a local telephone and contact the operator to learn where the emergency was located. He was also Superintendent of the Highway Department of the Delhi Police Department, through the 1960s.
Mr. Carpenter was Past Commander of the American Legion Donald Gleason Post in Delhi.
Mr. Carpenter was an active member of the Board of the Boy Scouts of America and Chairman of the Local Council Troop No. 35 in Delhi. He was a former resident of Tanglewood Lake in DeLancey, after his retirement.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by his son, Mr. Linn H. Carpenter of Media, Pa.; and his wife, Mrs. Jeannette D. Carpenter of Havertown, Pa.
He was predeceased by his father, Mr. Clayton Carpenter, and his mother, Mrs. Catherine May (Sheldon) Carpenter; brother, Mr. Lyle Carpenter; sisters, Mrs. Lepha Miller, Mrs. Evelyn Elliott and Mrs. Nellie Williams.
A memorial service will be held at the Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at 2 p.m., with calling hours from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Ministry.
Arrangements are by the Donohue Funeral Homes, Upper Darby, Pa.
Isaiah M. Moore
MARYLAND — Isaiah Matthew Moore of Maryland, went to heaven to be with his grandparents, shortly after birth on Feb. 10, 2004, at Albany Medical Center.
Born the son of Karen Ann Moore of Maryland and Justin James Slater of Massapequa, he is also survived by his twin brother, Dominic Joseph Moore; his grandparents, Carol Ann and Harold Hitt of Maryland, and Randy D. Moore of Oneonta; an aunt, Melissa L. Hitt, and an uncle, Randy J. Moore, both of Maryland; and an uncle, Dustin M. Hitt of Delhi; his great-grandparents, Beatrice Moore of Oneonta, Victor and Doris Hitt of Bainbridge, and James and Patricia Slater of Massapequa; as well as several great-aunts and great-uncles, cousins and special friends.
He was predeceased by his great-grandparents, Joseph V. Dulkis on Feb. 10, 1996, and Ruth E. Dulkis on Feb. 13, 2002, and Charles H. Moore on May 25, 2002.
Isaiah's family wishes to thank everyone for their support and love shown to them at their time of need. You kindness and caring ways will always be remembered.
A private family service, followed by committal in the Maryland Cemetery, will be held in the spring.

Dorothy Pardee
NEW BERLIN — Mrs. Dorothy Pardee, 90, of the St. Joseph Nursing Home in Utica, and formerly of 136 Pardee Road, New Berlin, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at the home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1913, in Kew Gardens, Queens, a daughter of Arthur and Mina Schurger Gleech.
She graduated from Richmond Hill High School and moved to Hartwick in 1946.
In 1947, she married Charles Frederick "Tick" Pardee in Cooperstown. He died in 1992.
Mrs. Pardee was employed at the P&T Variety Store and the Preferred Mutual Insurance Company, both in New Berlin.
She was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Edmeston.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Sally Pardee of Whitesboro, and Patricia and Franco Ngoma of Kenosha, Wis.; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Ralph and Lillian Gleech of Ballston Spa, and Ellen Pardee Kaul of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Gleech.
The family would like to thank her "extended family," the Sisters, nurses, aides and staff at St. Joseph Nursing Home, for their excellent care and compassion.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Nursing Home. There are no calling hours.
Friends may consider the St. Joseph Nursing Home Activity Fund or the Garrattsville Emergency Squad, Garrattsville, in her memory.

William D. Oakley
ONEONTA — William Douglas Oakley, 39, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica.
He resided on Main Street with his parents and wife for the last year and half.
He was born April 1, 1964, in Oneonta, the son of Theodore C. Oakley and Constance A. Simmons.
Bill attended Joe Kubert School of Cartooning and Graphic Art in New Jersey. He then went to work for Marvel Comics and other companies, and more recently was employed as a letterer for DC Comics in New York.
He was an avid fan of Pop Culture and enjoyed attending concerts, collecting comic books, but above all he loved his lettering career.
Bill is survived by his wife, Leslie (MacPherson) Oakley, whom he married on April 24, 2002; a son, Stephen Oakley; his mother and stepfather, Connie and Norman Quackenbush; four brothers, Curtis, Stephen and Danny Quackenbush and Tim Oakley; three sisters, Sherry (Quackenbush) Utter, Norma (Quackenbush) Clark and Theresa Oakley; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; including a very special aunt and uncle, Ronnie and Jackie Simmons; and his stepmother, Carol (Oakley) Stafford.
He was predeceased by his father, Theodore Oakley.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Eleanor Beams
LIVERPOOL — Eleanor Beams, 80, of Liverpool and formerly of Hobart, died Feb. 17, 2004, at Crouse Memorial Hospital, Syracuse.
She was born Feb. 1, 1924, in Fallsburg, the daughter of Vincent and Margaret (Lybott) McDowell.
She married Ivan Beams on June 20, 1946, in Middletown. He predeceased her on Dec. 10, 1998.
Mrs. Beams was employed as a bookkeeper in a legal office in Rochester and enjoyed her home. They moved to Hobart in 1969, where she became a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, actively participating in the United Methodist Women's organization. She served on the Hobart Village Board; volunteered at Stamford Hospital for many years; and was an active member of the Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel.
A son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Doloris Beams of Pennellville; a brother, Elmer McDowell, of Ashburn, Va.; a granddaughter, Amy Myers, and her husband, David, of Jamesville; and two great-grandchildren, David Myers and Rebecca Myers, survive Mrs. Beams.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
Burial will be in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Charles C. Renwick
UNADILLA — Charles C. Renwick, 77, of Unadilla passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his home.
He was born Oct. 20, 1926, son of the late Charles F. and Susan (Thayer) Renwick in Middlefield.
Charles married Norma L. Jenks on Nov. 19, 1948, in West Edmeston.
He was a self-employed farmer and owned Renwick Trucking to haul cattle prior to retiring.
He is survived by Norma Renwick, Unadilla; Harold and Robyn Renwick, Unadilla, Carl and Sally Renwick, Otego, Olin Renwick and Tammy Barringer, Franklin, Earl and Kim Renwick, Wells Bridge, Douglas Renwick and Michelle Vandermark, Treadwell, Rodney and Kellie Renwick, Unadilla, Kay and Tom Morrel, Jefferson, Pat and Gerald Terry, Franklin, Virginia and Chris Robinson, Morris, Jean Renwick, Unadilla, Debra and Kevin Rutherford, Walton; special friends, Erica Penner, Otego, Billie Jo Simpson, Walton, Denise Slocum, Sidney; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was also predeceased by a son, Michael; two sisters, Lydia Garlick and Pearl Higgins; and seven brothers, Roland, Robert, Jim, Homer, Walt, Harold and Harlow Renwick.
Friends may call Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004; the family will be in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, at the funeral chapel at 3 p.m. The Rev. George I. Goodwin will officiate.
Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery in the spring.
