Nicholas Holowach

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Dr. Nicholas L. Holowach, M.D., 84, a highly respected ophthalmologist who practiced in Oneonta for 41 years, died Feb. 23, 2004, at the Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center in Glen Burnie, Md.

Dr. Holowach was born in Oneonta on June 1, 1919, the son of Mary (Philips) and Nicholas T. Holowach.

He married Oneontan Lorraine Pierce in New York City in 1944.

Dr. Holowach was educated in the Oneonta schools. He played football at Oneonta High and caddied at the Oneonta Country Club where he learned the game and became a one-handicap golfer. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1943.

Upon graduation from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and reported for duty in New York City. The Navy ordered him to go to Notre Dame University to enroll in officer's training. While en route from New York City to Notre Dame, he stopped in Oneonta to see his family and found an acceptance to New York Medical College in his accumulated mail. When the Navy learned of his acceptance, they ordered him to return to New York City immediately to enroll in the Navy's V-12 program.

He graduated from New York Medical College in 1947. After graduation from medical school, Dr. Holowach did a year's postgraduate study at New York University College of Medicine and then his internship and residency in eye, ear, nose and throat at the Jersey City Medical Center.

In 1951, Dr. Holowach was one of 500 Navy doctors called to active duty and loaned to the U.S. Army under the Marshall Plan and was one of three doctors assigned for a year to the Army's famed 130th Station Hospital at EUCOM headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. His wife was given passage on a military transport ship to join him in Heidelberg.

They returned to Portsmouth, Va., for his final year of duty at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was honorably discharged from the Navy with the rank of lieutenant.

Dr. Holowach returned to Oneonta in 1952, and began a private practice in eye, ear, nose and throat. He drew patients from the three-county area and was a consultant for three area hospitals. He joined the staff of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in 1954.

That same year an article under the picture of a sleeping infant on the front page of The Oneonta Star began "Medical history was made at Fox Hospital yesterday" when Dr. Holowach removed an open safety pin from an infant's throat with a new instrument called the bronchoscope.

According to the article, prior to that time, patients with foreign bodies in their throats or lungs had to be flown to Philadelphia for treatment. He performed the procedure over the years at Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta, Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, and Margaretville Hospital in Margaretville.

When he limited his practice to diseases and surgery of the eye in the late 1960s, he had an impressive collection of coins, peanuts, small toy parts and safety pins that had been removed from the throats and lungs of patients. The collection even included a burdock burr removed from a child's lung.

He introduced microsurgery and intraocular lens implantation with cataract surgery at Fox Hospital in 1981. Dr. Miles Galin, professor of ophthalmology at New York Medical College, came to Oneonta and assisted in setting up the new service at Fox Hospital. In 1987, Dr. Holowach performed the first laser surgery at Fox Hospital for glaucoma treatment.

Dr. Holowach was an instrument-rated pilot and in 1969 was appointed a medical examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration. He was designated a senior examiner from 1979 to 1994, when he retired. Flying his orange and white Bonanza and playing golf were his two most enjoyable hobbies.

In the 1970s Dr. Holowach was adviser to the Otsego County Pre-School Vision Screening Program and was in charge of a series of free glaucoma screening clinics sponsored by Fox Hospital, the Lion's Club and the Otsego County School of Nursing. The clinics were very popular and were attended by hundreds of people.

Dr. Holowach was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the New York State Ophthalmology Society, the New York State Medical Society, the Otsego County Medical Society and the Catskill Care Corp. He was a member of the Fox Hospital Board of Trustees from 1978-1984, and had been president of the staff.

He was a member of Saint Mary's Church, the Oneonta Country Club, the Flying Physician's Association, the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce, the Hartwick College Citizen's Board, an honorary life member of the Lion's Club and a trustee of the Delaware County Conservation Association. For more than 38 years, Dr. Holowach and his family lived six months of the year in their home in Delaware County near Pindars Corners.

Dr. Holowach is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of 59 years; a son, Nicholas Holowach, Esq., of Rockville, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Lorraine and Jeffrey Keller of Pipersville, Pa.; a sister and her husband, Mary and John Berezansky of Fairport; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Leird Pierce of Oneonta; two nephews, John Pierce of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Thomas Holowach of Kailua, Hawaii; and two grandchildren, Laura and Charles Keller.
