Letha M. Eldred

HARTWICK — Mrs. Letha M. Eldred, 91, of Hartwick went to be with her Lord late Monday evening, March 1, 2004, at The Meadows.

She was born on Dec. 13, 1912, in Hartwick, a daughter of Jay and Blanche (Morse) Tuller.

She married W. Stuart Eldred on June 9, 1934. They spent 62 years together on their dairy farm until Mr. Eldred's death on Oct. 15, 1996.

A lifelong resident of Hartwick, Letha graduated from the Hartwick High School.

Following her marriage, she assisted her husband in the management of their dairy farm, as well as many other chores such as producing maple syrup, grading eggs and caring for the chickens. She loved to cook and enjoyed trying out many new recipes, which she often shared with her family and friends. Her recipes were known far and wide.

She was a longtime and very active member of the Hartwick Christian Church, where she played the piano and was involved in organizing many church suppers. At one time she was a member of the former Hartwick Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge in Hartwick.

Letha is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald A. and Marjorie Eldred; two special grandchildren, Tammy and Ryan Eldred; and a sister, Irene Matteson, all of Hartwick; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rose Tuller of Oneonta and Mrs. Linnie Tuller of Johnson City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde, Ansell and Lloyd Tuller.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 until service time on Thursday when Letha's family will be in attendance.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Her family requests no flowers. Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Paul D. Wickes

ITHACA — Paul D. Wickes, 59, formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Reconstruction Home in Ithaca.

He was born Jan. 28, 1945, son of the late Wilton G. and Margaret Wickes Dean in Scranton, Pa.

Paul attended Sidney Central Schools and was employed by Borden's Chemical Company in Bainbridge from 1963 to 1999.

He married Sharon E. Oglesby on Jan. 12, 1963, in the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Paul enjoyed golfing, especially the league at Way Back of Sundown in Guilford. He also liked to play in the pitch league at the Olde Jericho Tavern in Bainbridge. He was an avid NASCAR fan and he loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by wife, Sharon Wickes, Ithaca; son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Wickes, Alpharetta, Ga.; daughter, Brenda Wickes-Do, Ithaca; grandchildren, John P. Wickes and Kathleen Wickes, Alpharetta, Ga., and Liam Wickes-Do, Ithaca; son-in-law, Vu Do, Ithaca; stepgrandchildren, Akira Do and Nicholas Do, Ithaca; brother and sister-in-law, Wilton R. and Katherine Wickes, Sun Lake, Ariz.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Charles Emerson, Sidney, Marjorie Dean, Sidney, Barbara and Arthur Dumond, Sidney, Janet and Donald Repaal, Washington, Ill., and Claudia Bowen, Sidney; sister-in-law, Olivia Wickes, Delmar; special mother-in-law, Myrtle Oglesby, Unadilla; three sisters-in-law, Larue and Doug Brower, Sidney, Rita and Chris Dyer, Catawissa, Pa., and Helen and Phil Russ, Mount Upton; two brothers-in-law, Ed and Kathy Oglesby, Unadilla, and Wayne and Dawn Oglesby, Gilbertsville; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and special caregiver and friend, Nam Gay and the Wang family of Ithaca.

He was also predeceased by brother, Frank Wickes; stepfather, Frank Dean; two brothers-in-law, Ernie Dean and Stewart Bowen; and nephew, Thomas Lord.

Friends may call Thursday, March 4, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday in the funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery in the spring.

Charles Franklin

ONEONTA — Charles "Kip" Franklin, 80, who passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in Oneonta, was a past commander of the American Legion Post 259 and the VFW Post 1206 in Oneonta. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 579 and VFW Post 7128 in Cooperstown.

Kenneth H. McCumber

ONEONTA — Kenneth H. McCumber, 64, of Oneonta passed away unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at his home.

He was born on June 14, 1939, in Bainbridge, the son of Harold and Pauline (Sowles) McCumber.

He was a former resident of the town of Unadilla and the village of Sidney.

He was engaged in dairy farming for many years and at one time was employed at ARC workshop in Oneonta.

He was a member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church.

Kenneth is survived by his mother, Pauline McCumber of Cooperstown; his brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Irene McCumber of Burlington Flats; his sisters and a brother-in-law, Nancy Garrison of Oneonta, Anne and Edward Lyman of Loudonville, and Sally Hill and her fiance, Lewis Gage of Oneonta; several nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with a service to celebrate the life of Kenneth McCumber held at noon, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Interment will be later in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Edith Mihalko

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Edith Mihalko, 88, of Halifax Avenue, Daytona Beach, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Bishop Glen Health Care in Holly Hill, Fla.

She was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Hobart.

She moved to Florida in 1972, from Thornwood.

She received her B.A. degree from Oneonta State Teachers College and her M.A. from Hunter College in New York City. She was an elementary school teacher in New York State for 30 years, most recently in Thornwood.

She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, and was a member of Daughters of the King, all in Ormond Beach, Fla.

She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Bell of Fairfax County, Virginia.

Nancy L. McGauley

WALTON — Nancy L. McGauley of Walton died on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney. She was 62.

Mrs. McGauley was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Buffalo, to Leo D. and Thelma Brooks Hannan.

She worked as a credit collector for The Hospital in Sidney.

Mrs. McGauley is survived by her husband, Thomas; her sons, Edward and Daniel Fernley; and her daughter, Nancy McNamara; six grandchildren, Taylor, Brennah, Rebekkah, Mat, Danielle and Ethan; and her brother, Leo D. Hannan Jr.

Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton. There will be no service.

Leonard I. Closs

WALTON — Leonard I. Closs, 59, of Walton passed away suddenly Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, after being stricken.

Lennie was born in Walton, the son of the late George and Evellyn Bailey Closs.

On June 5, 1965, he married the former Patricia Barnhart at Walton.

He was employed for many years as a truck driver, by Downsville Stone Co. Lennie loved to work with stone, drive his truck, western movies and dress, and going to Turning Stone to play bingo.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; four daughters, Deniece A. and Scott Jacobs of Pine Bush, Loretta L. and Randy Stone of Walton, Tonia S. and Charles Boecke of Walton, and Sonia M. and Steven Armstrong of Walton; one stepson, Timothy Bowker of Walton; four brothers, Raymond Closs of California, William Closs of Chicago, Ill., Arthur Closs of Montana, and Randy Closs of Whitney Point; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Barnhart; brother-in-law, Randi Barnhart; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Dawn Closs in 1994; and a sister, Zerola Camfield.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 3 p.m. with Stephen Blews, pastor of Riverside Alliance Church, Walton, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery, in the spring.

Memorial contributions in Lennie's memory may be made to East Branch Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, 29 Bridge St., East Branch, NY 13756.

James W. Garvin

FLY CREEK — James W. Garvin Jr., 54, of Fly Creek died unexpectedly Wednesday night, March 3, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1950, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, the son of James W. Garvin Sr. and Catherine L. (nee Jones) Garvin.

He married Susan Tennant on Sept. 1, 1979, in Hartwick. Raised in Hartwick, Jim graduated from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1967. Following graduation he attended Hudson Valley Community College and Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa.

Upon his return to the Cooperstown area he was employed in construction, at one time working for Jim Hurtubise, and, for a brief period, he also did catering. For most of his life he was employed in the insurance industry and was currently serving as a claims adjuster for State Farm in Utica.

He was a member of the Wednesday Night Bowling League at the Clark Sports Center, the Sons of the American Legion, Post No. 579, and the Rat Patrol, all in Cooperstown. An avid golfer, he greatly enjoyed car racing, especially NASCAR, and spending time with his dog, Reiley. Jim also enjoyed flower gardening and cooking and will be remembered for the holiday meals he prepared for his family.

Jim touched many lives and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sue, of Fly Creek; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Catharine (Katie) Sanford and her husband, David, of Cooperstown; two nieces, Susan S. Novak of Worcester, Mass., and Megan A. Sanford of Burlington, Vt.; one great-niece, Alexis Novak; his aunt, Mrs. Mary J. Hoose of Portlandville; and his cousins, Randall S. Hoose and Judy, of Cooperstown, Samantha Hoose, and Randall S. Hoose Jr. of Laurens, Priscilla Kaye Osterhoudt and her husband, Darrell, of Jefferson City, Mo., Dana Osterhoudt of Missouri, and Sharon Baumgartner of Amery, Wis.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Mr. Richard Sliter, pastor of Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Hartwick Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220 or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

John S. Ackerley

CHARLOTTEVILLE — John Stephen Ackerley ("The Mayor,") 71, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Born Feb. 14, 1933, in the town of Kortright, the son of Hugh and Esther (Hillis) Ackerley.

He married Doris Brownell on May 12, 1950.

John served in the Army and received the OCC Medal in Germany, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He lived in Charlotteville for most of his life. He was an active member of the Charlotteville Fire Department for over 50 years. While in the department he held the office of Chief and Assistant Chief for a number of years. He received many certifications for fire training courses. John was also a Fire Commissioner for many years, and served in other fire department organizations.

In addition to the fire department, he was a member of the Summit Grange, involved in Cub Scouts as a Scout Leader, and in Little League as a coach and umpired numerous games.

John worked for a number of years at General Electric. He was a plumber, electrician and repaired furnaces. He was involved in the Postal Service for many years as a Rural Carrier, Post Office Clerk and retired as Postmaster for the Charlotteville P.O. in 1992.

John was a kind, caring person who rarely had a harsh word against anyone. He did so much for so many people over the years.

He leaves behind his mother, Esther of Stamford; his wife, Doris; three children, Dennis of Oneonta, Jill Fyfe of Davenport Center, and Jodi Clapper of Charlotteville, and a foster daughter, Paula Morrell of Franklin; three grandchildren, Steven Fyfe of Davenport Center, Shawna Fyfe of Charlotteville and Hunter Clapper of Charlotteville and four foster grandchildren, Waylon, Danielle, Wyatt and Alison Morrell, all of Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Brea and Victoria Fairbairn-Fyfe of Davenport Center; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Hugh; and his sister, Marie Churchill.

John leaves behind not only his family but many friends and associates. He touched the lives of so many people, not only in his community but throughout the surrounding area. He was well liked and loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Friends may call Friday, March 5, 2004, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the Charlotteville Fire Station. A military ceremonial presentation of the United States Flag will be held at the fire station at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Charlotteville Fire Station on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle officiating. Interment will follow in the Charlotteville Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in his name to the Charlotteville Fire Department/First Responders, PO Box 122, Charlotteville, NY 12036 or the Summit Rescue Squad, PO Box 2, Summit, NY 12175.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Stanley F. Borst

UNADILLA — Stanley F. Borst of Unadilla passed away Thursday, March 4, 2004, at his home.

He was born to Archie and Helen (Matt) Borst in Bainbridge.

Stan at one time worked for O&W and D&H Railroads, as a cutter for Keith Clark in Sidney, a driver for the Teamsters on I-88, and a mechanic for Houghtaling's Sales and Service, Chambers Auto in Sidney and Otsego Automotive in Oneonta until he retired in 1990.

Stan was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved nature and working around the house. He got much enjoyment from his animals and maintaining his cars.

He is survived by his loving wife, Millie; his daughter, "The apple of his eye" Melanie, and Dave; a sister, Doretta Neer; aunts Gerry Gifford and Ruth Mott; his fur kids, Yoki, Tom Tom, the four girls and Pagan, his grand puppy; many cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and friends.

He is predeceased by a brother, Archie Jr., and sister, Betty Cusson.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert Goldenberg, Pastor of the Circle Drive Alliance Church in Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge in the spring.
