Marjorie G. Flaesch

SIDNEY — Marjorie Grenchenko Flaesch, 76, of Sidney passed away Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born June 1, 1927, daughter of the late John G. and Olive (Oliver) Deuel in Binghamton.

Marge graduated from Sidney Central School and attended Cortland State.

Marjorie married William Grenchenko on Aug. 7, 1948, in Cortland. He predeceased her on Sept. 27, 1965. She then married C. J. Flaesch.

She was a Real Estate appraiser for New York State Division of Equal Assessment until 1989. Marjorie was then employed by DeMulder Realty in Sidney until she retired.

She was a past member of the VFW Auxiliary in Sidney and a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.

She is survived by a son, John Grenchenko of Bainbridge; a daughter, Sonya Gray of Taos, N.M.; a brother, Jack Deuel of Sidney; and a step sister, Joann Deuel Thompson of Guilford.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney. The Rev. Michael Shank Vicar will officiate.

Friends are invited after the service to John's home for fellowship at 34 Pearl St., Apt. 1, Bainbridge. Phone 967-4559 for directions.

Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.

Fayette J. Fowlston

LAKELAND, Fla. — Fayette J. Fowlston of Lakeland, Fla., passed away from complications of cancer, Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1933, in Oneonta.

She moved to Lakeland after 24 years of service with the Department of Defense overseas schools in Germany, the Philippines and Japan. She also taught 13 years in New York State, Kittery, Maine, and San Diego, Calif., before joining the Department of Defense program in 1973.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil S. Fowlston of Franklin.

She is survived by her mother, Helen B. Fowlston of Lakeland, Fla. and Almond; her brother, George Fowlston, and his wife Linda, of Cary, N.C.; sister, Mrs. Virginia McCarthy, and her husband John of Almond; four nieces and nephews; one great-nephew and many close friends in Tucson, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at the graveside in the Franklin Cemetery, Franklin, at some future date to be decided by the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the Westminister Presbyterian Church, 730 S. Florida Ave., Lakeland, FL 33801.

Richard A. Leo

WEST PALM, Fla. — Richard A. Leo, 85, of West Palm Beach, Fla. died on Friday, Feb. 20, at Hospice of Palm Beach County.

Formerly of Stamford, he was a resident of the Palm Beach area since 1965 and a member of St. John Fisher Catholic Church.

Mr. Leo was a Past Grand Knight, Knights of Columbus in Stamford, a member of the Palm Beach Council No. 2075 Knights of Columbus and a member of the Father Andrew Doherty General Assembly 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, West Palm beach, Fla.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Air Force, and a member of the VFW Post No. 6292 in Stamford.

Mr. Leo was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Post Office and a member of the National Letter Carriers Association No. 1690 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Leo is survived by his nephew, Joseph Leo Jr.; and niece, Kathy Updike, both of Cortland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Angeline Leo, who died on Jan. 27, 2004.

Contributions may be made in Mr. Leo's memory to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Irma E. Judge

ALBANY — Irma E. Judge, 95, of Hackett Blvd., formerly of Norwood Ave in Albany, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

Born on Aug. 4, 1908, in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late John Carl and Menga (Zuend) Eichenberger.

Irma attended school in Schenectady and graduated from Schenectady High School, Oneonta Normal School in 1928 and received her bachelor's degree in teaching from Buffalo State College and her master's degree from New York University.

She taught elementary school from 1928 until 1942, including four years in Greenwich, one year in Manhasset, L.I., and 11 years in Loudonville.

She was an excellent cook and artist and loved gardening.

Irma married Joseph D. Judge in 1944 and ran an insurance business with him in Albany until his death in 1973. She continued in the business for many years on her own.

Devoted aunt of Jean Manley of Oneonta, and Ronald Perry (Joan) of Saratoga Springs; great-aunt of William Manley of Medfield, Mass.; sister of the late Carl Eichenberger, Menga King and Elsa Herzog, she is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route Nine, Clifton Park.

Interment will be held in the spring in Clifton Park Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Irma E. Judge.

Ruth T. Olmstead

SIDNEY — Ruth T. Olmstead, 85, of 26 Pineview Terrace, Sidney, passed away Thursday evening, March 4, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Dec. 7, 1918, in Masonville, the daughter of the late Warner and Minnie Puffer Taylor. Ruth graduated from the Bainbridge High School Class of 1935 and the Ridley-Lowell Business and Technical Institute, Binghamton.

She married Wilson "Turk" Olmstead in Bainbridge on June 17, 1950.

Mrs. Olmstead was employed for more than 20 years by the Borden Chemical Company, Bainbridge, until her retirement in 1981.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, Sidney Fire Department Auxiliary and the Charles L. Jacobi Post No. 183 American Legion Auxiliary, Sidney.

Ruth enjoyed golfing, dancing, family outings and rides in the country to watch the deer. Her fresh baked pies were a very popular item at the church and auxiliary bake sales.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Wilson "Turk" Olmstead of Sidney; a son, Richard Olmstead of Kankakee, Ill.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanne and Jerry Birdsall of Sidney, Kathy and Paul Cummings and their children Brett and Brenna of St. Peters, Mo.; three sisters, Alice Wilcox of Bainbridge, Charlotte Cole of Bainbridge, Pearl Gilmour of Norwich; two sisters-in-law, Helen Taylor of Bainbridge, and Mable Cable of Sidney. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Samuel Taylor, predeceased Ruth.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 8, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Pat Robinson pastor of her church, officiating.

Spring burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call after 3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral chapel. Her family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Fire Department, River Street. Sidney, NY 13838 or to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Gary R. Utter

ROCHESTER — Gary R. Utter, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, after a long illness. He was 58.

He graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1964 and received a bachelor's degree from Ithaca College.

Gary served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in the Intelligence Command, 1st Signal Brigade (44th Signal Battalion), 1st Infantry, 4th Infantry, 25th Infantry, 1st Calvary and 101st Airborne. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

He worked for the 911 Emergency Communications Department for the past 20 years and was well loved by his co-workers.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Susan (Rogers); brother, Jim (Jeanne) Utter; sisters, Cheryl Utter and Deena (Steve) Scully; aunt and uncle, Janet and Lloyd Georgia; his father-in-law, Frank J. Rogers; three sisters-in-law, Carol (Frank) Rogers, Patricia (Douglas) Eggleton, and Eileen (Bill) Dorritie; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends across the world.

Calling hours at the Leo M. Bean and Sons Funeral Home, 2771 Chili Ave., Rochester, are on Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, also at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Grove Place Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gary R. Utter may be made to the Chili Fire Department, 3231 Chili Ave., Rochester, NY 14624.

Anne S. Vergari

ONEONTA — Anne S. Vergari, 72, of Oneonta passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at her residence surrounded by her three surviving children.

She was born Oct. 22, 1931, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Latka) Arthur.

She married Frank J. Vergari on Feb. 1, 1951, and he passed away on Dec. 23, 1977.

In addition to being a homemaker, Anne worked for a period of time at MAMCO in Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Anne was an avid golfer, and at 55 completed the 70-mile course in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta. She also enjoyed cross country skiing and bridge, as well as her many friends.

She is survived by her children, Deborah Vergari of Putnam Valley, Frank P. Vergari of Oneonta and Doreen Manheim and her husband, Steven, of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Aaron Muth, Angelina Vergari, Allison Muth, Willis Raym and Brooke Manheim; a brother and two sisters, Edward Arthur of Carbondale, Pa., Marion Szafronowski of Chicago, Ill., and Rita Dill of Monticello; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Julie Muth; two brothers, George and William Arthur; and a sister, Evelyn Baker.

A service to celebrate the life of Anne Vergari will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

The family has requested that memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Eva E. Straut

FRANKLIN — Eva E. Straut, 75, of Franklin passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 5, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 14, 1928, in West Haverstraw, the daughter of Raymond and Anna (Nemcik) Stout.

She married Walter A. Straut Sr. on Nov. 24, 1946, and he passed away on Jan. 10, 2000.

For a period of 14 years, retiring in 1990, she was employed with ECD Bendix in Sidney.

Eva was a member of the Franklin American Legion Auxiliary.

She was an avid reader, and loved to crochet. Most of all she enjoyed the time spent with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her children and their spouses, Patricia Zaleski of Jasper, Debra and Robert Palmatier of Bainbridge, Gregory and Denise Straut of Otego, Ann Marie and Peter Graham of Conklin; her grandchildren, Evamarie and Lance Zaleski, John and Jackie Hendrickson, Cheryl and Mark Sickler, Brian and Alana Palmatier, Tiffany Palmatier, Shannon Patnaude, Erika and Al Davis, Jonathan Graham and Nathan and Holly Straut; her great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kameron Sickler and Alfred Davis. She is also survived by a brother and a sister, Raymond Stout of Franklin, and Anna Johnson of Spring Valley.

She was predeceased by two sons, Walter Straut Jr. and Garry A. Straut.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Bevon Long, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call today at the funeral home from 6 to 8 at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics of New York, 504 Balltown Road, Schenectady, NY 12304, or the Sheltered Workshop for the Blind, PO Box 310, Binghamton, NY 13902.

Genevieve Spytko

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Genevieve "Jennie" Spytko, 69, left to be with our Lord and Savior, Saturday, March 6, 2004, at home with the comfort of her loving husband and two daughters.

Jennie was born in the town of Exeter, on July 13, 1934, the daughter of the late Louis and Martha Seamon. She grew up in the Richfield Springs area with her 17 other brothers and sisters.

She graduated from Richfield Springs Central School with the Class of 1953, where she participated in various sports and was a drum majorette. While in school she was employed at the former Palmer Hotel, the Corner Restaurant and the Richfield Springs Diner as a waitress.

While married to Steve, they ran a farm. They also built, owned and operated the S&L Slaughterhouse for more than 37 years before retiring.

Genevieve is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Steve; two daughters and their husbands, Darlene and Donald Calhoun of Kansas City, Mo., and Marlene and John Wagner of Middletown. Besides being a loving wife and mother she was the best grandmother ever to her four grandchildren, Donald Steven, Kenneth Christopher, Danielle Darlene and Steven John.

All those who knew her loved her dearly and will always remember her warm, wonderful smile.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Terence Healy will officiate.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Spytko will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery later this spring.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad or the charity of your choice.

Deborah E. Teehan

SIDNEY — Deborah Elaine Teehan, 65, of 47 Pleasant St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, March 6, 2004, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

She was born June 26, 1938, in Walton, the daughter of Charles Loker and Elaine McCall.

Debbie was a graduate of the Sidney High School Class of 1956. She was employed by the Mead Corp., Sidney, from 1972 until her retirement in 2001. Debbie was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.

She was a loving mother, devoted grandmother and caring sister.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Patrick "Rusty" and Tammy Teehan of Cypress, Texas; two daughters, Pamela Jean Hubbard of Sidney, and Dawn Barnes and her companion, Dennis Rowe, of Greene; her mother, Elaine Loker, of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Darryl and Janice Loker of Sidney Center; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marilyn Day of Bainbridge, Margot and Donald Goodrich of Franklin, and Cheryl and Keith Axtell of Masonville; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Charles Loker.

Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of her church, officiating.

Friends are invited to call from noon Wednesday until the services at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance.

Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Tri-Town Boys and Girls Club, care of the Civic Center, Pleasant Street, Sidney, NY 13838.
