Helen E. Bowen

ORISKANY — Helen E. Bowen, 96, formerly of Walnut Street in Cooperstown, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Eastern Star Nursing Home in Oriskany.

She was born in Milford in 1907, and lived there in her early years. In 1929, she graduated from the Utica Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses.

Following her marriage she dedicated her life to being a mother and homemaker, living in Hampton Manor and East Greenbush before establishing her residence in Cooperstown.

She was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church and the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter 201, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Trueworthy; and her sons, Robert and Herbert, and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert W. S. Bowen.

Calling hours will be private.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church.

A graveside committal service, including an Order of the Eastern Star service, will be held at a later date in the Westville Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Eastern Star Nursing Home, 8290 State Route 69, Oriskany, NY 13424 or the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margit J. Martin

OTEGO — Margit J. Martin, 60, of Otego passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Gefrees, Germany, the daughter of Valentine and Augusta (Zirk) Habermann.

She married Harry A. Martin on Aug. 20, 1969, in Germany.

A resident of Otego since 1970, moving here from Germany, Maggie was a member of Oneonta American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 259.

She is survived by her husband, Harry A. Martin, of Otego; a son, Thomas Martin of Oneonta; and a daughter, Laura Jobson, and her husband, Todd, of Richford; three grandchildren, Cara, Katie and Paxton Jobson; a brother, Hans Habermann of Germany; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 259, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Louise Beuke

NEW LISBON — Louise Beuke, 101, of New Lisbon died Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born in Germany on March 10, 1902.

She was married to Carl Beuke, who died in 1963.

She was a homemaker and took great pride in being a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Louise had lived in this area for the past 23 years and had formerly lived on Long Island.

She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Lorraine Engstrom and Walter of Oneonta, and Sherry Edwards and Doug of New Lisbon; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Louise C. Beuke.

There will be no calling hours, and private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Charles R. Cole

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — Charles Reginald Cole, 88, of Englewood, Fla., and longtime resident of Rockdale, passed away Friday afternoon, Feb. 27, 2004.

Charles was born at the Cole family farm in Rockdale, Otsego County, on Sept. 13, 1915. As a boy, he worked for Frank and Helen McLagan at McLagan's General Store and Post Office in Rockdale.

He attended Sidney High School, then joined the United States Navy in 1933, spending most of his enlistment in Hawaii. While on leave in Tacoma, Wash., he met Margaret Rozila Tracy whom he married in Guilford on March 19, 1938.

After Pearl Harbor, he re-enlisted in the Navy and his family moved temporarily to be with Margaret's parents in Tacoma, Wash.

Reg was employed for many years at the Scintilla Magneto Division of Bendix in Sidney.

Chuck spent countless hours maintaining the buildings and mowing lawns for the Rockdale Community Church and the Rockdale Rod and Gun Club where he was also the "chef extraordinaire" for the club's chicken barbecues. A pond at the club was dedicated to him in 1994.

Charlie was also a volunteer firefighter for the Mount Upton/Rockdale Fire Department; a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175; the American Legion No. 183; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and the Mount Upton Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Marlene C. O'Connell of Mount Upton, and Patricia Shaffer Marselle of Englewood, Fla.; one brother, Frank W. Cole Jr., of Sidney; two grandsons, Michael C. O'Connell of LaPorte, Colo., and Thomas D. O'Connell of Holly Springs, N.C.; four great-granddaughters, Casey, Alexis, Kelsie and Andie; one great-grandson, Christopher; a stepgrandson, Michael Marselle of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepgranddaughter, Jill Marselle Vargas of Oviedo, Fla., and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Kaley.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank W. Cole Sr., mother, Rena Hopkins Cole Fisk Stevens of Englewood, Fla.; two brothers, Rowland Cole of Sidney and Donald Cole, formerly of Englewood, Fla., and an infant sister, Helen.

A memorial service will be held later in New York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rockdale Community Church, in care of Roseann Banner, 677 New York State Highway No. 7, Unadilla, NY 13849.

Alice Bolster

UNADILLA — Alice Bolster, 53, died on Friday, March 5, 2004, at 1:17 p.m. after a long illness at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on Oct. 26, 1950, the daughter of Charles Delia and Elsie (Heiner) Falkenmeyer in Queens.

She married Dale Bolster at the Unadilla United Methodist Church. She was an employed at A.I.G. in Vestal.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Bolster of Unadilla; two sons, Brian Bolster of Buffalo, and Jeffrey Bolster of Unadilla; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Phillip Falkenmeyer of Queens, Gus and Dolores Falkenmeyer of Unadilla, and William and Helen Falkenmeyer of Queens; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Regina and Edward Matthewson of Sarasota, Fla., Dela and Raymond Hussey of Port Charlotte, Fla., Helen and Charles Lynch of Queens, Dolores and Herbert Kutlow of Carlsbad, Calif., Agnes Hoyt of Unadilla, and Virginia England of Bainbridge. Also survived by a brother-in-law, Dominic Carbo; and sister-in-law, Shirley Bolster; several nephews, nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces.

The family will receive friends at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge, on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge. The Rev. Ben Shaw of the North Afton United Methodist Church will officiate.

Helen E. Bowen

Richard A. Close

MARGARETVILLE — Richard Arthur Close, 83, of Margaretville died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home after a brief stay there.

He was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Downsville, to Arthur and Alice "Wilson" Close and moved to Margaretville as a young child where his father was the founder of Close and Sluiter Insurance Agency.

Dick graduated from Margaretville Central School in the Class of 1938, and attended college for one year at New Paltz. He then enrolled in the University of Alabama, until he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon his discharge from the service he continued his education at the University of Alabama, graduating with a degree in business. With that degree he moved to New York City where he spent the next 50 years.

He received his MBA from New York University and worked in retail at Orbachs Men's Department for several years. He joined Citibank and retired from there in 1980 after 25 years of service.

While living in NYC, Dick was a member, for nearly 50 years, of the Collegiate Chorale, singing in many countries of the world. He moved back to Margaretville in the early 1990s and lived his remaining years in the family home.

He was also a longtime member of the Masons; member of Saint Margarets Episcopal Church in Margaretville; and a member of the Middletown American Legion Post No. 216.

He is survived by one brother-in-law, Milton Valk, Fleischmanns; a niece, Carolyn Bradley and her husband, Lynn, Kelly Corners; a nephew, Steven Valk and his wife, Barbara, Middletown; a niece, Cathy Stoutenburgh McAuliffe and her husband, Ian, West Palm Beach; several grandnieces; a grandnephew; six great-great-nieces and -nephews; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Alice Close; a sister, Jean Close Stoutenburgh and her husband, Marshall; a sister, June Close Valk; and one nephew, David Wilson Valk.

Calling hours will be held from noon until service time at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in Page Cemetery, Downsville.

The family suggests donations in Dick's memory be made to Saint Margarets Episcopal Church, Orchard Street, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Elizabeth Dauchy

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Elizabeth L. Dauchy, 88, of Lake Worth, Fla., passed away on March 5, 2004.

Elizabeth was born in Morris, on April 26, 1915. She was a graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, and taught junior and senior high school. She taught at Conniston Junior High for 16 years; was a member of the Retired Educators of Palm Beach County, the State of Florida Retired Teacher's Association, and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Dauchy and his wife, Lea, of Albany, Ga.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Lake Worth, with the Rev. William E. Hamilton officiating.

Interment will be held in the spring at All Saints Chapel Cemetery, Morris.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to All Saints Chapel, Morris.

Marguerite Queil

WORCESTER — Marguerite B. Queil, 81, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at her home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Darwin and Ethel (Oliver) Clapper.

She married Warren J. Queil on Aug. 29, 1946, in Cobleskill. He predeceased her on June 3, 1987. Mrs. Queil was a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by her brother, Harold Clapper of Syracuse; and two nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Resue; and a brother, Donald Clapper.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2004, at E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Home in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be at the East Worcester Cemetery at a later date.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Jean L. Mazzarella

SIDNEY — Jean Lucille Mazzarella, 78, of Sidney passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born June 19, 1925, daughter of the late Ellsworth Sydney and Gertrude (Tompkins) Smith in Vernon.

Jean graduated from Edmeston High School and Beaux Arts Beauty School. She opened a beauty salon in her home and operated in Sidney for over 48 years.

She is survived by her husband, Louis "Scrap" Mazzarella; son, Anthony Mazzarella; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Panaro; grandchildren, Katie and Mark and Dana; sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Richard Arrandale.

She was predeceased by a brother, Hugh Smith; and son, John Mazzarella.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church or the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

John Mitchell

COOPERSTOWN — John (Jack) Crain Mitchell, 90, of Cooperstown died Monday, March 8, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born on May 29, 1913, at the Thanksgiving Hospital, a son of George and Mary (Crain) Mitchell.

He was a graduate of Cooperstown High School.

Jack married Sophie Mele on Aug. 28, 1935, and they spent the next 68 years together until her death on Oct. 14, 2003.

In 1934, Jack took over Mitchell Moving and Storage from his father, George, who had taken the business over from his father in 1905. He operated an independent moving and storage business until 1941, when he became affiliated with Allied Van Lines. At this time he expanded his business from two trucks to seven that operated from coast to coast.

In 1947, he built a warehouse and garage on Grove Street and moved his business from his home at 39 Chestnut St., and his storage from the Key Bank to that location.

Jack had a bus service that for many years contracted with Cooperstown Central School as well as local businesses and organizations.

He also did local snow plowing for many residents and businesses. In 1972, his son, John, joined him and both operated the business until the mid 1980s when they sold the moving operation. Jack continued on with the storage business under the name of Grove Block Inc., until the building was sold to Bassett Healthcare.

Jack was also a real estate sales person for Don Mayhew and Don Olin and continued to enjoy working with the people in and around Cooperstown.

Jack was a Cooperstown resident his entire life.

During World War II, his entire crew served in the military leaving himself and one employee, Roy Roberts, to serve the government with his trucking operation.

In Jack's spare time he enjoyed the lake, having many boats and had fond memories of his family and many friends at his camp at 5 Mile Point.

In past years his family and friends enjoyed their trips to Myrtle Beach, and in later years he and Sophie vacationed with friends in Florida. Jack and Sophie were a loving couple who enjoyed their lives together.

Jack was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, having served as a trustee, supervised the care and organization of St. Mary's Cemeteries on Irish Hill and Index, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a member of Native Sons, a longtime member of the Cooperstown Fire Department, a member of the Rotary Club, member of the Mohican Club, a member of Leatherstocking Golf Course, served on the Village Board of Trustees, and a dedicated volunteer at Bassett Healthcare.

In addition to his wife, Sophie, Jack was predeceased by a sister, Georgiana Biunno of Crawford, N.J.; and a brother, Joseph Mitchell of Oneonta.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Ted Kantorowski of Cooperstown; two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Nancy Mitchell of Hartwick, and John and Lynda Mitchell of Cooperstown; 10 grandchildren, Michael Kantorowski and his wife, Pam, Jeffrey Kantorowski, Lisa Page and her husband, Scott, Matthew and Cristine Mitchell, Sarah Nickoson and her husband, C.J., Nicole Poole and her husband, Jim, Todd Anderson and his wife, Kelly, Colin Anderson and his wife, June, Joshua Mitchell and his fiancee, Brooke Owens, and Christopher Mitchell; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Frances Fish of Columbia, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, and Fr. John R. Roos, pastor emeritus, co-officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions, may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, or to St. Mary's Cemetery Fund, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
