Janice A. Foote

BRIDGEWATER — Janice A. Foote, 65, passed away unexpectedly, at home, March 9, 2004.

She was born, March 5, 1939, in Utica, the daughter of Edward and Gladys Mae Griffith Pritchard. Janice grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1956.

September 12, 1959, she married Robert S. (Dutch) Foote. He died Sept. 18, 1997.

Mrs. Foote was a member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church. Janice enjoyed raising birds and plants. She often volunteered her services at dinners at the Masonic Temple.

Survivors include two aunts, Rosemary Bethlehem, Whitesboro, and Shirley Gaynor, Cooperstown; several cousins, nieces, nephews; Bob's family; and many close friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 2:30 p.m., at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, 365 West Main St., West Winfield, with Pastor Wallace Brown, officiating. Calling hours are Saturday from 11 a.m., until the time of the funeral.

Spring interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Please consider memorial donations to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Donald B. Van Wicklen

ONEONTA — Donald B. Van Wicklen died peacefully at home on Feb. 19, 2004.

Most currently a resident of St. James Manor, Oneonta, he was 12 days shy of his 86th birthday.

He is survived by his wife, Ella (Van Orden) Van Wicklen of Oneonta; daughter, Betty J. Van Wicklen of Watervliet; sisters, Elizabeth Ann Norejko of Mineola, and Mary Alice Biggers of Sea Cliff; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Van Wicklen was the son of the late George H. Van Wicklen Sr. and Elizabeth (Smith) Van Wicklen, of Sea Cliff; and brother of the late George H. Van Wicklen Jr.

Mr. Van Wicklen served proudly as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to the level of having the ability to certify all airplane repair work at his base.

After the war, he operated the Triangle Gas & Service Station in Brookville, for many years. In 1959, he bought a non-working farm outside of Oneonta and the Grand Gorge Liquor Store, which he ran until retirement.

He was a longtime member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church and the West Davenport Cemetery Society. In October of 1999, he moved to St. James Manor to enjoy his retirement.

Wherever he went, he made friends who will miss him deeply. His many friends and relatives will long remember his eager helping hands; his mischievous twinkle and sense of humor; his sound advice; his bird houses, feeders and toys; and his creative way of making tools to fit almost any purpose.

As a last generous gift, he donated his body to medical research, in his own way helping to increase medical knowledge which will help others.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the American Heart Fund, the Salvation Army or the West Davenport United Methodist Church.

A memorial service for Mr. Van Wicklen will be held at St. James Manor, Oneonta, on Sunday, March 14, at 9:15 a.m. Please call St. James Manor or Mrs. Fern Briggs, Route 23, Davenport Center for details.

Stephen L. Ham

DAVENPORT CENTER — Stephen L. Ham, 47, of Davenport Center, passed away Friday, March 12, 2004, at his family's home following a lengthy illness .

He was born April 23, 1956, in Oneonta, the son of Rose Marie (Leonard) and Gurney Ham.

A lifelong resident of Davenport Center, Stephen was a stock and delivery person for L.P. Butts in Oneonta. An avid NASCAR fan, he loved planting his garden, feeding the birds and watching his tropical fish, and the companionship of his beloved dog, Buck.

His mother, Rose Marie Ham of Davenport Center; four children, Arthur Ham of Franklin, Rhiannon Ham of Oneonta, Traci Whitehill of Sidney and Marcella Ham of Sidney; two grandchildren, Joel Ham and Dorian Whitehill, survive; as well as an aunt, Loreen Steele of Colorado; a brother, Thomas Potter of Davenport Center; and sister, Anne Potter of Oneonta. He had wonderful friends, Emily Harrington, Arthur Shaw, Allen Fitzpatrick and Steve Zimmerman; and two nephews, David and Ben Cowy, of Oneonta, who also survive.

He was predeceased by his father, Gurney Ham.

Graveside services will take place in the spring at Charlotte Valley Cemetery in West Davenport. Date and time will be announced.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the with MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Beatrice C. Ireland

UNADILLA — Beatrice C. Ireland, 83, of Unadilla, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2004, at the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford.

She was born Aug. 14, 1920, in High Falls, the daughter of the late Harold and Bessie (Cornell) Coddington.

She was married to Phillip O. Ireland on Jan. 1, 1939, in Unadilla. Mr. Ireland predeceased her on March 25, 1972.

Beatrice was a former town of Sidney tax collector, bookkeeper for the town of Sidney Highway Department, and served as clerk/cashier for Empire Livestock of Oneonta, L.S. Shubert, auctioneer of Bainbridge, and D.R. Chambers & Sons Inc. of Unadilla.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Sidney and was instrumental in starting UNICEF in Unadilla.

Beatrice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Virginia Ireland of Bainbridge; and her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Robert Hinkley of Unadilla; her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and William Bonesteel of Bainbridge; her stepbrothers, Floyd Many of Hobart, Wallace Many of Connecticut and Kent Many and Paul Many, both of North Carolina; her grandchildren, Karen and Andrew Kantor, Cheryl and Stratton Liberty, Suzanne and Casey Callahan, Andrew and Jessica Hinkley and Dorene Ireland; also seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Eva Goebig and Shirley Bouse; her son Larry R. Ireland; great-granddaughter, Hannah Hinkley; three stepbrothers; and a stepsister.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, Sunday, March 14, from 5 to 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Michael J. Shank, Vicar, officiating.

Interment will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Antonio Orlando

COOPERSTOWN — Antonio Orlando, 83, of Cooperstown died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at The Meadows.

He was born in Brooklyn on July 22, 1920, to Dominico and Anna (Lungaro) Orlando.

He graduated from Brooklyn public schools.

Antonio served in World War II for more than four years in Australia, New Guinea and Luzon.

He was employed by Garwood Inc. as an East Coast service representative for hydraulic systems. Later he owned a garage in downtown Manhattan. In 1960, he began working for New York City as a master mechanic. He retired in 1977 because of ill health.

Antonio moved from his beloved Brooklyn to Tappan in 1964.

He had been a Democrat Party committeeman in Bensonhurst, and also held this office in Orangetown town in Rockland County. He was very active in politics until moving to Cooperstown.

Antonio was a bicentennial commissioner for Rockland County for the U.S. Bicentennial, and again later for the New York State Bicentennial.

He was very active in many organizations, having been president of the Giovanni da Verrazano Lodge of the Sons of Italy, secretary-treasurer of District 5 Sons of Italy, commander of the John M. Perry Post American Legion, taught at Ben Franklin Stamp Clubs in several Nyack and Tappan schools for years, was a member of St. Dominic's Council Knights of Columbus, a member of the CYO Advisory Board for Orange and Rockland Counties for years, was on the Board of Directors of the Rockland County Psychiatric Center, was historian of the Rockland County American Legion and president of the Orangetown Veterans Council, also a life member of the Columbian Association City of New York.

In November 1987, Antonio was honored as Rockland County's CYO Man of the Year at a breakfast ceremony attended by hundreds.

He retained memberships in all Rockland County organizations even after moving from Upper Nyack to Cooperstown on July 1, 1988.

In Cooperstown, Antonio was an active member of the stamp club. A member of the Albany American Italian Cultural Society, NYSHA, CAA, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Baseball Hall of Fame, and Leatherstocking Historical Society.

Antonio enjoyed American history, collecting various things and sharing his love of Italy and his pride of his heritage. He had traveled extensively.

He was a good, kind, loving man and was a devout Roman Catholic. He was a diehard New York Yankees fan.

Antonio is survived by his wife, Helen Hansen Orlando, who he married on Dec. 22, 1972.

From a previous marriage, he is survived by a son, Anthony Orlando of Australia; a daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Mark Goyette of Bennington, Vt., two grandsons, Alexander and Eric Goyette of Bennington; three nephews in Brooklyn; and a niece in Kenmore and their families. He is also survived by many beloved cousins and old friends.

He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, assisting.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions, may be made to the Activities Fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway No. 33, West Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Kayla L. Doroski

HARTWICK — Kayla Lynn Doroski, 14, of Hartwick died Saturday afternoon, March 13, 2004, at her home after a long illness.

She was born on April 2, 1989, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, and was the daughter of Bonnie and Charles Monroe of Hartwick, and Walter W. Clapper Jr. of Otego.

Throughout her brief life, Kayla lived in Oneonta and Hartwick and was a freshman at Cooperstown High School.

Her favorite pastime was shopping, but she also enjoyed riding four-wheelers, bowling, burning CDs on her computer and spending time with her friends.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Brittany Doroski and a brother, Kyle Stickles, both of Hartwick; a stepsister, Racael Monroe of Edmeston; her maternal grandfather, John Doroski Sr. of Davenport Center; her paternal grandmother, Thelma Clapper of Otego; her aunts and uncles, Peggy and Glenn Schilling of Hartwick, John and Darlene Doroski and Darin Doroski of Davenport Center, Randy and Cindy Brundage and David and Angel Ferguson of Oneonta, and Tim and Darcy Clapper of Hartwick; many cousins, including "her shadow" Lexi; her two best friends, Amanda Woodbeck of Hartwick and Regan Robinson-Barnes of Schuyler Lake; and her devoted puppy, Romeo.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Constance Doroski; and her paternal grandfather, Walter W. Clapper Sr.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home at 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, with Pastor Kenneth Brookens of the Living Water Faith Fellowship in Oneonta officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, March 16, 2004, from 6 to 9 when Kayla's family will be in attendance.

Burial will be at a later date in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Because of Kayla's love for animals, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Phillip W. Petri

COOPERSTOWN — Phillip W. Petri passed away March 12, 2004. He had been a patient at The Meadows, since March 13, 2002. He suffered from Parkinson's disease.

Phillip was born Feb. 28, 1918, at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, Cooperstown. His parents were Ida (Zbindin) and Philip Petri.

He was of the Lutheran faith. He married Phyllis Kaye on June 3, 1978, who survives.

He leaves one daughter, Karen (Mrs. Randy) Atwood from a previous marriage. Also, one granddaughter, Kelly Chrysler.

Phillip's favorite nephew, David Petri, and niece, Janice Gurule, survive.

His brother, Ralph Petri, predeceased him May 17, 2002.

He was a 1937 graduate of Milford Central School and joined the Army Air Force in 1942. He served in Scotland and France for three years and was honorably discharged in 1945, as staff sergeant. His specialty was electronics and he was adept in repairing damaged airplane motors during World War II. Phillip spent 25 years working as an airplane mechanic at Vought Aircraft Industries Inc. in Dallas.

His hobbies included collecting and repairing antique radios, woodworking and hiking.

As per his request, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery with his family in attendance.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Home.

Bruce L. McGregor

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Bruce L. McGregor, 4 Waters Edge, Mount Vernon, passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2004.

The son of James Robert and Alma (Larson) McGregor. Mr. McGregor was born April 20, 1916, near Oxbow, Saskatchewan, Canada.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Evelyn H. McGregor; and a sister, Audrey Winkler.

Mr. McGregor is survived by his wife, Doriene; his daughters, Cheryl Church and Maxine McDonald, sons-in-law, Michael Church and Bruce McDonald; grandchildren, Jenna Nichols and husband, Jamey, Evan Rice and wife, Tammy, and Adam Makruski; a great-grandson, Tristan Nichols; a niece, Laurie Burroughs; a stepgranddaughter, Michele Church; and stepchildren, Gregory, Grant, Moira, Craig, Rob and Neil Pittam and their families.

Mr. McGregor was a retired advertising sales representative. He spent his early years in Sidney, where he was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, later moving to Glenview, Ill., and Westlake, Ohio, where he served as treasurer of the Cleveland Advertising Association.

In retirement he resided for several years at Apple Valley near Mount Vernon, where he served as treasurer of the Apple Valley Property Owners Association. His final years were spent in Fredericktown, Ohio, Mount Vernon, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Mr. McGregor was an avid boating enthusiast and enjoyed cruising the Great Lakes and Apple Valley Lake on his own boats and in his later years enjoyed several commercial cruises with his loving wife, Doriene.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.

Friends may call at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from noon until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. David Baker officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1105 Mount Vernon Ave., Marion, Ohio 43302.

George R. Danforth

JEFFERSON — George R. Danforth, 88, of Jefferson died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at home.

He was born June 7, 1915, in Jefferson, the son of Everett and Anna (Cooper) Danforth.

He married Marietta Rickard on May 14, 1937, and she passed away May 13, 1978.

A lifetime Jefferson resident, Mr. Danforth was very active in the Jefferson Methodist Church where he held many offices; the Jefferson Grange; and was a member of many agricultural organizations. He volunteered endless hours to residents of Robinson Terrace.

From 1951 until 1992, he served as a town assessor for the town of Jefferson, where he was chairman for many years. He held a remarkable position as a third-generation assessor for the town. In 1981, he was honored with the Century Farm award; he was the fourth generation on the farm.

His greatest joys were his family, church, community and farm.

He is survived by two daughters, Gail (Dave) Peake, Jefferson, and Nadine (George) Wilson, Stamford; two sons, Russell Danforth, Jefferson, and Alan (Rosalie) Danforth, Cobleskill; and his grandchildren, Jeffrey (Lori) Danforth, Richmond, Va., Michael (Becky) Danforth, Clifton Park, Andrew, Emily, Daniel Wilson, Stamford, and Shannon Peake, Jefferson; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Danforth, Richmond. Also surviving are two sisters, Marjorie Dayton, Schenectady, and Julia Foote, Cobleskill; a brother, Paul (Eunice) Danforth, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Eloise Weaver, Grace Davenport and Alice Danforth predeceased him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Jefferson Methodist Church, Jefferson, with Pastor Frank Adams, Pastor Charles Gockel and the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will be in the spring at Jefferson Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Jefferson Methodist Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Gladys Lawrence

AMBLER, Pa. — Gladys C. Lawrence, 83, died on Monday, March 8, 2004, in Ambler, Pa., where she had resided for the past several years with her daughter.

Ms. Lawrence was formerly of Otego, where she made her home and raised her family.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1920, in Binghamton, the daughter of the late Ralph and Anna Mae (Steele) Cleveland. She spent her younger years in Cortland, before moving to the Otego area.

She was employed by Bendix Corp., Sidney, as a machinist for more than 30 years. She also owned and operated, with her sister Lillian, an upholstery fabric business called "Saturday's Child" in Cortland.

She married Clarence Brown in Cortland. She married William H. Gill on July 3, 1943, who predeceased her on July 23, 1965. She then married Richard H. Lawrence, who also predeceased her.

Ms. Lawrence will always be remembered by her family as a strong, capable woman who we always knew would be there for all of us. She took great joy in the lives of all of her children and grandchildren, and played a major role in all of their upbringing. She was a great seamstress, a wonderful gardener and was for many years the center of the family.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter, Gary and Sandy Brown, Cortland, Michael and Savannah Gill, Dallas, and Kathie Rutland and Jean Riley, Oneonta; two brothers, Ralph and Jo Cleveland, Baldwinsville, and Howard and Dorothy Cleveland, Cortland; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; as well as her loyal caregiver and friend, Veda Jacobs.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Susanne Taylor; a daughter-in-law, Ann Gill; her sister, Lillian Waldron, three brothers, Ronald, Mahlon and Gerald Cleveland; and two grandchildren, Scott and Jason Brown.

At Ms. Lawrence's request, there will be a private memorial service at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Homes, Ambler, Pa., and Conshohocken, Pa.
