Pauline E. Ritton

COBLESKILL — Mrs. Pauline E. Ritton, 93, of Hammerstone Village Apartments, died March 14, 2004, at Eden Park Healthcare Center in Cobleskill.

Pauline was born Feb. 19, 1911, in Summit, the daughter of Alvin Y. and Lulu Dell (Ryder) Eldredge.

A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Summit and most of her married life she lived in Richmondville, Cobleskill and Warnerville.

She was a homemaker all her life and served as a volunteer for the hospital auxiliary in Cobleskill for many years and was also a member of the Schoharie County Home Bureau. Mrs. Ritton was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Cobleskill.

She married Harold Ritton on Jan. 4, 1933. He predeceased her on July 6, 1987.

Survivors include two sons, Delos Ritton of Cobleskill and Dale Ritton of Vernon, Conn.; four grandchildren, Steven and Kevin Ritton, Kimberly Casselman and Erika Ritton; and five great-grandchildren, Christy, Kandi and Tami Ritton, Ian Ritton and Jon Ritton; and several nephews.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Wesleyan Church, Legion Drive, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Scott Thompson and the Rev. Donald Klob officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial will be in Maryland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesleyan Church or to a charity of one's choice.

Patricia Duplissa

ONEONTA — Patricia Duplissa, 85, of Robynwood Adult Home, and formerly Old Town, Maine, died March 15, 2004, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born March 4, 1919, in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Stanley and Rose (Keenan) Lambert.

She married Frank Duplissa on Dec. 10, 1938, in Bangor, Maine. He died Sept. 25, 2001.

Pat enjoyed socializing with her extended family and friends at Robynwood and watching softball games in Neahwa Park.

She will be remembered for her feisty spirit and great sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Duplissis of Pen Yan; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Laurence Spindler of Belton, S.C.; two sisters, Lucille Pepin of Seattle, Wash., and Roselle Campbell of Bangor; six grandchildren, Sherry Place, Terri Beers, Daniel Liddle, Eugene, Jessica and Derek Duplissis; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Frank; granddaughter, Jaylene Rathbun; sisters, Margaret Bennette and MaryEllen Prendergast; and brothers, Thomas Lambert and John Turner Jr.

Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with calling hours from 2 p.m. until service time.

Burial will be at a later date at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Old Town.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Sarah Gerstner

ROCHESTER — Sarah (Lafferty) Gerstner, 91, Rochester, passed away March 3, 2004.

She was born in Gilboa on Feb. 16, 1913.

Sarah was a member of St. Andrews Rosary Society and Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Gordon) Morrock of Utica, and Patricia (Bruce) Oakes of Rochester; grandchildren, Brian (Bridget) Morrock, Elizabeth Morrock, Christopher and William Oakes; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, George.

Calling hours were held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Falvo Funeral Home, 1395 N. Goodman St., Rochester. Funeral was held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrews Church. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

David P. Knapp

HUBBARDSVILLE — David P. Knapp, 55, of Larkin Road, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his home, after a courageous battle with ALS, with his family by his side.

He was born May 20, 1948, in Troy, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy Cox Knapp.

He was educated in Valley Central Schools in Montgomery and Orange County Community College.

He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the 561st Military Police, stationed in Ft. Myer, Va.

On March 22, 1975, in Walden, he married Linda E. Stalter. The Knapps have resided in Hubbardsville since 1987.

Mr. Knapp was employed with Pacemaker Millar in Utica. He was later employed as the Distribution Supervisor for the Mead Corporation in Sidney.

Mr. Knapp was a member of the East Hamilton Methodist Church, was a certified lay speaker and served for 15 years as the church treasurer. He was also a member of PPRC.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; one daughter, Sarah Moody and her daughter, Savannah, of Earlville; one son, Karl Knapp at home; his parents of Montgomery; three brothers and a sister, James and Joyce Knapp of Walden, Gary Knapp and his friend Jane of Montgomery, Gail and Glenn Hall of Lewis, and Paul Knapp and his friend, Greg of Wallkill; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth (Perk) Stalter of Hubbardsville; three sisters-in-law, Nancy and Eladio Ayala of Waterville, Lisa and Steven Gibbs of Michigan, and Karen and David Fox of Hubbardsville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Gerald Edward Stalter.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the East Hamilton Methodist Church, State Route 12, with the Rev. Myrna Foster officiating.

Spring interment will be in North Brookfield Cemetery.

Calling hours are Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville.

Freda May Pesch

BOVINA — Freda May Pesch, 91, of East Bramley Mountain Road, Bovina, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at home.

She was born on May 8, 1912, in Bethany, Ill., the daughter of James and Mary (Pesch) Marlow.

She married Virgil Pesch in Colorado. He predeceased her in 1966.

Freda was employed as a telephone operator for Mountain Bell Company in Colorado Springs, Colo., for more than 30 years.

A born-again Christian, she was very involved in her church and was a devoted member of her community.

In 1993, she moved to Westchester to be closer to her sister and niece. They eventually settled on East Bramley Mountain in 2001.

She is survived by a niece, Benita and William Branciforte and their children, Rachael, Peggy Sue, Charles, Elizabeth and William Jr., of Bovina, and a niece, Bearnice and Robert Hudson of Montrose, and their daughter, Lauren Croft of Arlington, Va.

She was predeceased by her sister, March Stokes, on Dec. 17, 2003.

Graveside services will be held in the summer at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in Freda's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York, State University College at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Virginia L. Butler

MORRIS — Virginia L. Butler, 74 years of age, of Morris, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 2, 1929, in Ashland, the daughter of Perry and Gladys (Maben) Soule Sr.

On Dec. 14, 1947, she married Earl Butler in Otego.

Virginia drove school bus for many area schools and most recently she drove for Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Earl Butler, of Morris; her five children and their spouses, Diana and Tom Miller of Owego, Dora Butler of Bedford, Va., Patricia and Skip McCann of Sidney, Laura and Karl Zimmerman of Castle Creek, and James and Barb Butler of Morris; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Perry Jr., William, Merritt and Gary Soule; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virginia was predeceased by one son, Ronald Butler; one granddaughter, Emily Butler; two brothers, Walter and Munson Soule; and one sister, Minnie Kirk.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Randolph Palada, pastor of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday at the funeral home from noon until service time.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, Gilbertsville, NY 13776 in loving memory of Virginia L. Butler.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Leland E. Sheldon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Leland Earl Sheldon, "Windy," 94, of Walnut Street, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday afternoon, March 16, 2004, in The Meadows, Cooperstown, after a short stay.

He was born on May 18, 1909, in Springfield Center, son of the late Earl and Mabel Smith Sheldon.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Springfield Center High School.

Windy was employed by the Otsego County Highway Department for 42 years and had served as Deputy Superintendent of Highways from 1957 until his retirement in 1972.

Leland was a 52 year member of Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 Free and Accepted Masons, where he had served as Master of the Lodge in 1957, and was the recipient of the Dedicated Service Award in 2001. He was also a member of Otsego Chapter No. 26 Royal Arch Masons and the Otsego Commandery No. 76.

Windy will always be remembered for his devotion to his wife, Elda, his sense of humor, strong work ethic and his independent spirit. He took pride in caring for his home and yard. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, baseball and politics.

Surviving are his loving wife of 76 years, Elda; a son, William and his wife, Sharleen Sheldon, of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Valnette and her husband, Tony Rossi, of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Carol Sheldon of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and one cousin.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Sheldon and Henry and his wife, Mildred Sheldon.

A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held later on this spring in the Springfield Center Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad, PO Box 1456, Richfield Springs, or the Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 F&AM, PO Box 91, Richfield Springs, NY 13439.

Jose L. Escalera Jr.

ONEONTA — Jose L. Escalera Jr., 36, of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 15, 1967, in New York City, the son of Jose and Jacqueline (Ortiz) Escalera Sr.

Jose served in the United States Navy from 1987 to 1991. For a period of time he worked as a waiter at the Otesaga in Cooperstown.

He is survived by his significant other, Andrea L. VanDyke of Oneonta; his children, Jose L. Escalera, II of Oneonta, Crystal Escalera of Oneonta, and Olivia Escalera of Kingston; a sister, Jacqueline Scott of Manhattan; and two brothers, Robert Ortiz of Brooklyn, and Luis Ortiz of Manhattan.

He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Captain Joy Blanchard of the Oneonta Salvation Army, officiating.

Spring burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Oneonta Salvation Army.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Daniel Harrington

NEW BERLIN — Daniel Harrington, 72, of New Berlin, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at his home in New Berlin, as a result of a heart attack.

He was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Northville, to Frederick and Hazel (Blowers) Harrington.

Daniel was married to Joyce V. Mallery on Feb. 13, 1955, in Edmeston. She survives.

He spent his childhood in the Edmeston area and attended Edmeston Central School.

Daniel was a heavy equipment operator for the Town of New Berlin until his retirement in 1993.

He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 after which he was in the Reserves from 1956 to 1962. Daniel was a good father, husband, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

Daniel enjoyed working on antique tractors and was happy when he was able to work. He had many good friends, loved his family and was very proud of his two grandsons.

He is survived by his two sons, Larry Harrington and his fiancee, Shelly Montgomery, of New Berlin, Jeffrey and his wife, Tammy Harrington, of Pittsfield; two grandsons, Matt and Ryan Harrington; two brothers, Howard Harrington of Hope, Kan., and Jim Harrington of Edmeston.

Daniel was predeceased by five brothers, Alwin, Fred, Donald, Ronny, and Harold Harrington; and one sister, Irene Tice.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 22, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Donations may be made in his memory to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Margaret V. Maltese

SIDNEY — Margaret Virginia Maltese, 81, of Willow Street, Sidney, passed on ever-so-peacefully at home, and in the presence of her children, on Tuesday evening, March 16, 2004.

Margaret was born on April 30, 1922, to Mildred (Staub) and Oswald Veile in St. Louis, Mo. The family moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where her two brothers, Edward and Louis were born.

Shortly before Margaret turned nine-years-old, she lost both of her parents. Her brothers were adopted by the Dinse and Birr families. She was raised in an Evangelical home for children and by her Aunt Selma (Veile) and Uncle Louis Junck in Belleville, Ill. During World War II, Margaret served in the USO and met her husband-to-be, Arthur Maltese, who was stationed nearby at Clark AFB. They were married on Dec. 19, 1945, and moved to New York City to be near his family.

After living in New York and on Long Island, in 1962 they realized their dream of living in the country by moving to Sidney. During her 42 years in Sidney, Margaret was an active member of the First Congregational Church, taught Sunday school and was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts and The Hospital, Sidney. She loved cooking, gardening, the "Birthday Club" and especially her friends and family. She was wonderfully gifted at maintaining friendships all along the path of her life. She will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her children, Francesca Margaret Maltese and spouse, F. Alexander "Sandy" Blount Jr., of Amherst, Mass., James "Jimmy" Murray Maltese of Tuolomne City, Calif., Ralph Arthur Maltese and spouse, Sheila Peck, of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Virginia Anne Maltese of Sidney; seven grandchildren, Nina and spouse, Tom Curley, Elena Maltese, Sophia Blount, Michael, Margaret, Jesse and Maia Maltese; her brother, Edward, and spouse, Gloria Dinse, of Hartford City, Ind.; and her sister-in-law, Lois Birr, of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of special cousins, nieces, and nephews.

According to her wishes, Margaret donated her body to the Syracuse University Medical Research Center.

A memorial service will be held this Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church, Sidney, and will be followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. All family and friends are most welcome.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Congregational Church and to Catskill Area Hospice.

Edna Rose Mounteney

COOPERSTOWN — Edna Rose Mounteney, 96, of Cooperstown, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at The Meadows.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 20, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown from 10 to 11 a.m.

A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
