Leonore M. Robinson

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Leonore M. (Goddard) Robinson, 93, of Woodside Hall, Cooperstown, formerly of Beaver Meadow Road, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 16, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on July 31, 1910, in Long Island City, a daughter of Franklin and Leonore (Neilsen) Goddard. Following the death of her father, Leonore's mother moved her young family to the Cooperstown area where her children were raised and educated.

Upon graduation from Cooperstown High School in 1930, she was employed as a domestic for several area families. On March 11, 1932, she married Torrey G. Robinson in Cooperstown and devoted her life to raising their family and caring for their home.

A longtime and devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, Leonore joined the church May 1, 1922, and at one time cared for children in the church nursery. She was also a member of the Native Daughters of Cooperstown and the Double X Club.

She is survived by two sons, John D. Robinson of Phoenix Mills, and Bruce E. Robinson of Schroon Lake; her seven grandchildren, Gloria, Martin, Robin, Torrey, John Jr., Nathaniel and Rebecca; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Leonore was predeceased by her husband, Torrey G. Robinson, who died April 22, 1988; one son, George F. Robinson; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Smith; and three brothers, Sidney, Franklin and Arthur Goddard.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in the Chapel.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or The First Presbyterian Church Women's Fellowship, 25 Church Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326, designated for the restoration of the stained glass windows.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Leland E. Sheldon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Leland Earl Sheldon "Windy," 94, of Walnut Street, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday afternoon, March 16, 2004, in The Meadows, Cooperstown, after a short stay.

He was born on May 18, 1909, in Springfield Center, son of the late Earl and Mabel Smith Sheldon.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Springfield Center High School.

Windy was employed by the Otsego County Highway Department for 42 years and had served as Deputy Superintendent of Highways from 1957 until his retirement in 1972.

Leland was a 52-year member of Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 Free and Accepted Masons, where he had served as Master of the Lodge in 1957, and was the recipient of the Dedicated Service Award in 2001. He was also a member of Otsego Chapter No. 26 Royal Arch Masons and the Otsego Commandery No. 76.

Windy will always be remembered for his devotion to his wife Elda, his sense of humor, strong work ethic and his independent spirit. He took pride in caring for his home and yard. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, baseball and politics.

Surviving are his loving wife of 76 years, Elda; a son, William and his wife, Sharleen Sheldon, of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Valnette and her husband, Tony Rossi, of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Carol Sheldon of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and one cousin.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Edward Sheldon and Henry; and his wife, Mildred Sheldon.

A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held later on this spring in the Springfield Center Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Axel O. P. Axhoj

ONEONTA — Axel O. P. Axhoj, 91, died at his home at St. James Manor, Oneonta, on Wednesday, March 17, 2004.

He was the beloved husband of Gladys; loving father of Peter (and Marion) and Leila (and Bill); dearest grandfather of Tammie, Sheryl, Tarrie, Sheila and Kristen; and a delighted great-grandfather of 12.

Mr. Axhoj was born 1912, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He and Gladys were married there in 1935 and came to the United States in 1938. With great pride he became a United States citizen in 1940. His strong sense of patriotism and his love of his chosen country has been commemorated with his gifts of permanent flag displays that grace Hartwick College, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, FoxCare Center, the National Soccer Hall of Fame and St. James Manor.

Axel and Gladys founded and operated the Winney Hill Lumber Company in Oneonta from 1947 to 1970. He served as director of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association. He was a director and chief appraiser at Oneonta Savings and Loan (Astoria) from 1960 until his retirement in 1985, at which time he was named honorary director of the firm.

He was a past president of Otego Rotary Club; past director of the Oneonta Rotary Club; founder of the Rotarian Christmas Fund; a Paul Harris Fellow; recipient of the governor's certificate of merit; member of Oneonta BPOE, member of Lodge No. 466 Free and Accepted Masons, where he held a 32nd degree; member of the Kaluhra Shrine in Binghamton, where he earned a dedicated service award; and a member of Hartwick citizen board. Mr. and Mrs. Axhoj were awarded the title of Mr. and Mrs. Oneonta for the year 2000 by the Future of Oneonta Foundation.

Mr. Axhoj was a member of the First Methodist Church in Oneonta.

We will always remember Axel's love of God, family and country.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the charity of one's choice.

A memorial service will be held at Elm Park United Methodist Church at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 24.

Donald M. Loudon

BAINBRIDGE — Donald Moore Loudon, 92, of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born June 9, 1911, son of the late John R. and Anna (Marsh) Loudon in Prattsville.

Don married Viola Sherman on July 16, 1938, who survives in Bainbridge.

He is also survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Vern Wallace, of Bainbridge, Barbara and Clifford Crouch, of Guilford, Sharon and George Hunt, of Bainbridge; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Friends may call Sunday, March 21. The family will be in attendance from 4 to 7 p.m. at C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 22, at the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Don's name to the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge or The Hospital, Sidney.

Vivian G. Schauer

SIDNEY — Vivian G. Schauer, 75, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Albany Memorial Hospital, Albany.

She was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Charlotteville, the daughter of the late Robert and Lula (Chickerling) Harder.

She lived most of her life in Sidney, and for 15 years during the '50s and '60s was employed in the tool planning department of Scintilla-Bendix Corporation of Sidney. Following her employment at the Sidney facility, she ran an antique bottle shop from her home for several years. Her passions were antiques and her flower gardens.

Vivian is survived by her son, Jeffrey Dixson of Guilford; her brother, Howard Harder of Bainbridge; a granddaughter and her husband, Julie and Lt. James Rasure; a grandson, Matthew DeMatteo; two great-grandchildren, Josh and Jordan; a niece, Donna Harder; nephew, Robert Harder; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers Robert Harder and Donald Harder.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be services or calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Catskill Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Bastine L. Caracciolo

GREENE — Bastine Louis "Bucky" Caracciolo, of Greene, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1918, in Tunnel, the son of the late Michael and Agnes (Imperial) Caracciolo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Flanagan Caracciolo; his children, Linda and Thomas Demkovich, of Endicott, Patricia and Rodney Smith, of Greensboro, N.C., Michael and Beth Caracciolo, of Charlotte, N.C., Susan Caracciolo of Bainbridge, and Ann and William Fairchild, of Greene; his grandchildren, Courtney and Joseph Stirpe, of Vestal, Carrie Ann Demkovich of Endicott, Melinda and Todd Hicks, of Charlotte, N.C., Trae Smith of Chapel Hill, N.C., Jason Smith of Raleigh, N.C., Nicole Caracciolo of Charlotte, N.C., Meredith Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., Audra Mayton of Raleigh, N.C., Tammy and William Ruettgers, of Charlotte, N.C., and Natalie Sherwood of Greene; his sisters, Frances DiLello of Afton, Louise Myers of Johnson City, Teresa Capalupo of Bound Brook, N.J., and Madeline Donahue of Dallas, Texas. Many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much and was much loved in return also survive him. His faithful buddy "Butry" also survives.

He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Joan Caracciolo, of Canton; and his brothers-in-law, Harold DiLello and Thomas Myers.

Bucky was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He had the distinction of servicing with the Big Red One (First Division) in North Africa, Sicily and the Battle of the Bulge, during which he received the Bronze Star.

Starting in the late 1940s and spanning close to 50 years, Bucky's true passion in life was baseball, of which he not only played and coached, but also was a dedicated Little League coach. He coached the Bainbridge Braves and the Greene Town Team.

Bucky worked for the D&H Railroad and later retired from New York State Electric & Gas. He was a former member of the Greene Lions Club and the American Legion of Bainbridge and currently a member of the Greene American Legion. On Oct. 15, 1993, Republican State Senator Thomas Libous proclaimed that day a tribute to the Democratic "Sidewalk Mayor of Greene."

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 22, from Immaculate Conception Church, Greene, with the Rev. Thomas Ward celebrating the Mass.

Interment with full military honors will be in the spring in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene.

Friends may call at the Kennedy Funeral Home, 21 North Chenango St., Greene, on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greene Emergency Squad, 8 North Canal St., Greene, or the Greene Lions Club, 123 Crestmont Road, Greene, NY 13778.

Grace Quackenbush

MARYLAND — Grace Quackenbush, 83, of Maryland died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Jefferson, the daughter of John and Margaret (Gifford) Dauley.

She married William Quackenbush on Oct. 13, 1939, in Davenport. He predeceased her on Dec. 11, 1997.

She was a lifelong area resident. Family was her life; she was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her favorite hobby was cooking.

She is survived by her children, Lillian (Harry) Holbrook, Cairo, Ella Mae Twomey, Norwich, Robert (Bonnie) Quackenbush, Freehold, Emma Jean Eichler, Norwich, Adelbert Quackenbush, South Cairo, Donald (Cathy) Quackenbush, Oneonta, Lynn (Martha) Quackenbush, Milford, Virginia Everleth, Earlton, Bonnie (Rodger) Vandenburgh, Freehold, and Maryjo Hyms of Pleasantville; 30 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Hagadorn, Dorloo, and Ethel Walsh, Schenectady; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, a son, Paul, a daughter, Wylene and a grandson, Larry Holbrook, predeceased her.

There will be a graveside service in the spring at the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Milford Rescue Squad, Milford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Leonard G. Eckert

WALTON — Lenny "Scrub" Eckert, a lifelong Walton resident, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 20, 2004, surrounded by family and friends. He was 64 years old.

He was born June 10, 1939, to Theodore and Elizabeth Gray Eckert.

He married Carole Green of Walton on April 12, 1975.

"Scrub," as he was known by many, was a well-respected member of the community.

Along with his wife Carole, he owned and operated Walton Lanes bowling alley for many years. Prior employment included Perini Corp., H&H Contractors, Scotts Welding Machine and the Delaware County Fair as an electrician.

Lenny served in the National Guard for 12 years. He was a member of the Club Royal, the Vets Club and the American Legion Post No. 32.

He coached Legion baseball and was a "one-time" women's softball coach. He was an avid bowler, golfer, baseball player and softball player. Hunting and salmon fishing were also favorites.

Mr. Eckert is survived by his wife, Carole, at home; two children, Tonya and Ted Eckert, both of Walton; two children from a previous marriage, Mark Eckert and Tina Stanton and husband, Randy, also of Walton; nine grandchildren, Chad and wife Anna, Christopher and Cody Conway, Garret and wife Beth, Kyle, Brett, Chasity and Tanner Eckert and Kalei Olsen; two great-grandchildren, Anthony Conway and Kayla Schriver; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, and two sisters, Jane Utter and Thelma Hammond.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Family will be in attendance for calling hours from 7 to 9 p.m. today, March 22, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home in Walton. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Alliance Church, Walton, followed by burial in Walton Cemetery.

Steven R. Valk

MIDDLETOWN — Steven Richard Valk, 57, of Middletown, formerly of Fleischmanns, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Orange Regional Medical Center (Arden Hill Campus), Goshen.

He was born Feb. 1, 1947, in Fleishmanns, the son of Milton Valk and June Close.

He married Barbara Scott on May 12, 1984, in Middletown.

Steven graduated from the New York State Police Academy and served as a state trooper for 16 years from 1970 to 1986. During his time of service he was involved with the K-9 Unit and handled two police service dogs. He was proud to be the first K-9 handler in Troop F Middletown. After retiring from the State Police, he went on to serve the public by becoming a 9-1-1 dispatcher for Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch in New Jersey.

Steven held a passion for nature photography and had published photographs in selected books and magazines.

He graduated from Fleischmanns Central School in 1964, he attended Parsons College in Iowa and St. Petersburgh College in Florida.

Steven is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Valk. He is the beloved father of two daughters, Hilary and Heather. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Mark Friese; two grandsons, Hayden and Hunter; his father, Milton Valk; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Lynn Bradley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, June Valk; and his brother, David W. Valk.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating.

Burial will be in the Somerset Cemetery, Somerset, Ky., at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

Dorothy S. Hull

PRATTSVILLE — Dorothy S. Hull, 92, of Prattsville passed away peacefully Friday evening, March 19, 2004, at her home on Johnson Hollow Road.

She was born on Dec. 31, 1911, at the Enderlin Homestead, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Voorhees) Enderlin.

She was married to Robert Hull in Sept. 17, 1932, in Prattsville. After a wonderful marriage he passed away in 1991.

A lifelong area resident, Dorothy took great pleasure in her farm, friends and family. This was reflected in her homestead, Brookside Farms, which flourished every season under her care.

While her voice will no longer be heard among the walls of her beautiful farmhouse, her compassion, tenderness and love lives on with her family.

Surviving her are three daughters, Doreen Van Valkenburgh, Elaine Gockel, both of Prattsville, and Marilyn Angellotti of Otego; three sons, Gerald Hull of Prattsville, Ronald Hull of Otego and Robert Hull Jr. of Middleburgh; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Marian Beers and Mrs. Evelyn Cammer of Prattsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 37123 Main St., Grand Gorge, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, March 22, 2004. The family will be in attendance during the evening hours.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, in the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kristina Hanson, officiating.

Interment will be held at a future date in Prattsville.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Grand Gorge.

Roann B. Cardilla

ONEONTA — Roann Badgley Cardilla, 72, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica.

She was born on July 10, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Bidwell and Liberty (Tyrell) Badgley.

Roann lived most of her life in the Monmouth County shore area in New Jersey. In 1994, she moved to the Oneonta area and most recently lived at the Masonic Care Center in Utica.

She is survived by her husband, Michael B. Cardilla; a daughter, Michelle Cardilla Shamblin of Oneonta; and two grandchildren, Craig and Chloe Shamblin of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael B. Cardilla Jr. in 1983.

Calling hours will be held at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, on Saturday, April 3, 2004, from noon to 1 p.m., with the memorial service starting at 1 p.m. with Betty New of the Christian Science Church officiating.
