Elma H. Mitchell

OTEGO — Elma H. Mitchell, 88, of Otego passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 24, 2004.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1915, in East Meredith, the daughter of William M. and M. Elizabeth (Hanford) Hetherington.

Elma married Thomas G. Mitchell on Aug. 12, 1941. He died Feb. 11, 1993.

Elma graduated from Oneonta Normal School and Hartwick College and was a school teacher and a historian. She taught at East Meredith, Smyrna, Cobleskill, Otego, Schenevus and Sidney Center schools. She also taught homebound students in Otego, Gilbertsville and Morris districts and completed her teaching career as Title I reading teacher in Unatego district.

She was Town and Village historian for Otego and author of "The History of East Meredith" (three volumes).

Elma was a musician and was active in the church. Following World War II, she was a choir member and directed the junior choir at First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta. She joined the Otego Methodist Church in 1952 and was active in Adult Fellowship, taught the adult Sunday School class and was church historian. She was Choir Director 1955-1962, was organist 1962-1991, and remained organist emeritus while residing at Fox Nursing Home since 1991.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), President of the Otego Civic Club, volunteered in the Otego Library and was a member of the Library Board. She also had taught piano lessons from 1952-1990 and was the First Woman Citizen of the Year for the Otego Susquehanna Grange.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce H. and Lois Mitchell of Bainbridge, Philip J. and Janet Mitchell of Deltona, Fla., and William F. Mitchell and Becky Ross of Gaithersburg, Md.; her daughter, Laureen Mitchell of Ilion; one sister and brother-in-law, Alyce and Gordon Roberts of Oneonta; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Blanton of Davenport, and Helen Mitchell of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego on Saturday, March 27, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present at the church.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, with the Rev. Beven Long, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Richard A. Breuninger of Oneonta officiating.

The choir will sing at the funeral service and anyone who would like to join them may do so in the social hall of the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that expressions of sympathy be given to the charity of one's choice or to the Otego United Methodist Church Music Fund, PO Box 288, Otego, NY 13825 in memory of Elma H. Mitchell.

Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Robert F. Wood

WALTON — Robert F. "Woody" Wood of Walton, longtime heavy equipment operator for the Village of Walton, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 24, 2004. He was 51.

Woody was born March 16, 1953, in Walton, to Clifford B. and Esther Vandemark Wood.

On Aug. 29, 1998, he married Gina Steele at their home in Walton.

Woody was employed by the Village of Walton for 31 years. He was a member of the New York State Teamsters in Binghamton and he served in the National Guard from 1974 to 1983, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Walton Fire Department for more than 20 years.

Woody will be remembered for his sense of humor and joking. He loved kids, especially his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a wonderful husband and father.

Robert F. "Woody" Wood is survived by his wife, Gina, at home in Walton; his mother and stepdad, Esther and Lester Stockwell of Arkville; children, Michael Klinegardner, Timmy Wood and Jeremy Pettit and Jenna, all of Walton, Ken Wood and fiance Jody of Trout Creek, and Sonia and Jason Barager of Kinross, Mich.; brothers, Clifford Wood, New Albany, Miss., and Daniel Wood of Arkville; grandchildren, Dylan, Mary and Isaac; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his father; and several aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, March 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

A graveside service for family and friends will be Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at the Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Edward Lowell officiating.

Donations to Hospice or Delaware County ARC Resources For Industry Day Rehabilitation in the name of Robert F. "Woody" Wood would be appreciated.

Ursel Roes

OTEGO — Ursel Roes, 75, of Otego passed away unexpect-edly on March 24, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 4, 1928, in Hamburg, Germany, the daugh-ter of Erwin Karl and Frieda W. (Bertha) Willey.

She was married to William Roes. He predeceased her in 1988.

Ursel was a homemaker for most of her life. She was an ac-tive member of the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church in Oneonta.

Ursel is survived by her three stepchildren, Ray Roes and his wife, Bonnie, of Cobleskill, Herbert Roes and his wife, Kira, of Melrose, a stepdaughter, Audrey Roes of Delmar. A nephew, William Condon of Branford, Conn., also survives her.

There will be no public call-ing hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church, County Route 48, Oneonta, NY 13820 in Ursel's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.

Raymond W. Hecox

ONEONTA — Raymond W. Hecox, 66 years of age, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born May 25, 1937, in Oneonta, the son of George and Edith (Moseman) Hecox.

Ray served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959.

On Aug. 22, 1964, he married Cheryl Lints in Oneonta. Ray worked as a machinist at Am-phenol in Sidney for 40 years until his retirement in 1999. Following his retirement, he delivered flowers for Coddington's Florist.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandsons, and fishing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Cheryl Hecox, of Oneonta; his son and daugh-ter-in-law, Timothy and Julie Hecox of Milford; his two grandsons, Tyler and Jacob Hecox of Milford; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Christene Hecox of Londonderry, N.H.; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Hecox of Glen Burnie, Md.; special friends, Bill and Norma Jean Thomas of Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ray was predeceased by his brother, Richard Hecox.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Raymond W. Hecox will be held on Monday, March 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be offered on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

George W. Beams

SCHENEVUS — George W. Beams Sr., 78, passed away, Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 3, 1925, in Oneonta, the son George W. and Ella (Alger) Beams.

George attended Oneonta schools and married Minnie Apsey in 1944.

He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II.

George worked for the D&H Railway as boilermaker and then The Daily Star as pressman for 32 years.

He was a life member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752 and a member of the C.H. Graham Hose Co., Schenevus.

George dearly loved his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie; his children, Dean of Schenevus, George (Buddy) and wife Lillian of Maryland, Cindy and husband Joe Davi of Homer, Thomas and wife Stephanie of Unadilla and Gerald and wife Jennifer Beams of Schenevus; seven grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Ruth Duggleby and Frances and husband John Mattice; sister-in-law, Genevieve Beams; brother-in-law, Henry White; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was predeceased by two brothers, Edgar and Wendell, and four sisters, Dorothy, Laura, Clara and Marian.

Calling hours will be held at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, on Sunday, March 28, from noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will be at the Schenevus Cemetery.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Harold Hall

DELHI — Harold Hall, 91, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where he resided.

He was born Oct. 30, 1912, in Bovina, the son of Harrison and Elizabeth (Kinch) Hall.

He was married to the late Mildred A. Hall on Aug. 2, 1934. She died Aug. 6, 1999.

A lifelong area resident Mr. Hall worked as a farmer for McIntosh Farms, Bovina.

He is survived by two daughters, Anita Stewart of Arcade and Carol Wilson of Ithaca; five sons, Gerald Hall of Delhi, Wesley Hall of Corfu, Donald Hall of Hobart, Charles Hall of Hobart and Edward Hall of Rome; a brother Howard Hall of Molena, Ga.; a sister, Louise Sanderson of Altamont; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 29, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. David Wheatley of the Delhi Alliance Fellowship Church officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, March 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be later in Bovina Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Delhi Alliance Fellowship Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Phillip DiGasbarro

PITTSFIELD — Phillip DiGasbarro, 71, of Pittsfield, and formerly of Garrison, died peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on Thursday, March 25, 2004.

He was born March 12, 1933, in Highland Falls, the son of Pasquale and Juliet (Tomasi) DiGasbarro. He married Miriam A. Osberg on June 21, 1958, in Jenkintown, Pa. She predeceased him on May 23, 2000.

Phillip was an avid golfer and member of the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown and had served as president of the Highlands Country Club in Garrison.

More importantly, he was a devoted father, grandfather, family man and friend. A graduate of Alfred University, Phillip also served in the United States Army with the 3rd Armored Division as a military police officer. Phillip enjoyed gardening of all types but especially enjoyed his vegetable gardens.

Phillip is survived by his children and their spouses, Peter and Karen DiGasbarro of St. Louis, Vicki and Tim Johnson of Edmeston, Michele and Bill Couperthwait of Otego, and Lisa and Rick Hausman of Haymarket, Va.; his grandchildren, Christina, Phillip and Diana DiGasbarro, Alex, Susanna and Catherine Johnson, Matthew, Ryan and Logan Hausman and Madison Couperthwait. In addition, Phillip is survived by his brother, Pat DiGasbarro, and his sister-in-law and her husband, Jeanne and Al McDevitt, his sister-in-law, Karin Osberg; and his mother-in-law, Adeline Osberg; and many special nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Sunday, March 28, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New Berlin, with Father Charles Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in St. Andrews Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Phillip's memory to Catskill Area Hospice and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Frederick Tippmann

FRANKLIN — Frederick Tippmann, of Franklin, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton. He was 80.

Mr. Tippmann was born July 13, 1923, in the Bronx, to Karl and Theresa Tippmann.

Mr. Tippmann worked as a supervisor for American Express in New York. He will be remembered for his love of animals.

Frederick Tippmann is survived by his wife, Margaret; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gatto; nieces and nephews, Kathy Smith, Maria Kujawski, Donna Cox, Peggy Peterson, Charles Passarella, Jimmy Passarella and Thomas Harrington, and all of their families.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Monday, March 29, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Walton, with Father Michael Flannery officiating.

Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery.

Stanley Wickham

ONEONTA — Stanley Frank Wickham, 78, of Oneonta died Friday, March 26, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Hobart, the son of Gideon and Florence (Cronk) Wickham.

Stan spent his childhood in Stamford living on the Four Winds cauliflower farm with his Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Jay and their children, Barbara, Thomas and Burton. He graduated from South Kortright Central School.

Stan served his country in the United States Army Air Corps.

On May 19, 1951, he married Ethel Herman. Stan retired in 1981, from the New York Telephone Company, Oneonta, as service foreman. In nearly 30 years of service, he worked in both the Oneonta and Stamford offices.

He enjoyed traveling and sports (an avid Yankees fan). But most of all, Stan loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be deeply missed.

Stan was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta; the Telephone Pioneers of America; the Oneonta B.P.O.E. Post No. 1312 and the Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ethel Wickham of Oneonta; his two daughters and son-in-law, Diane and David Gomez of New York City and Claudia Webber and her friend, Henry Grosse, of Middle Island, Long Island; his grandchildren, Cristina, Julia and Victoria Gomez of New York City and Alexander and Alyssa Webber of Middle Island, Long Island; his two sisters, Glenda Mattice of Highland and Arlene Tweedie of Margaretville; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Stan was predeceased by his parents, Gideon and Florence Wickham.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell officiating.

Calling hours will be offered from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, March 29, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Stanley Frank Wickham.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elnora S. Jackson

ANDES — Elnora S. Jackson, 83, a longtime resident of Andes, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Mrs. Jackson was a respected and much loved teacher in Andes for 30 years, retiring from that position in 1977.

She was a member of the Cabin Hill Church in Andes, where she taught Sunday School. Being an avid reader, she was active in the Andes Library for many years.

Born Nov. 29, 1920, in South New Berlin, Elnora was the youngest daughter of Niles and Winifred Grover. She was a graduate of Keuka College, Keuka Park, in 1942, and received her master's of arts degree from Albany State University in 1962.

Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Arthur Southerland, in 1956; her second husband, John Jackson, in 1971; and by three sisters: Sarah Grover of South New Berlin, Doris Gould of South New Berlin and Olive Perkins of Ashville, N.C.

She is survived by a sister, Iola Bookhout of Cazenovia; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Cabin Hill Church, Route 2, between Andes and DeLancey.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cabin Hill Church or "The Scholarship Fund in Honor of Elnora Jackson" at the Andes Central School, Andes NY Att: Jan Stevens.
