F. Douglas Bowles

WOLFEBORO, N. H. — F. Douglas Bowles, 80, of Wolfeboro, N.H., died March 14, 2004, in Santa Barbara.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Boston, Mass., son of C. and Cassandra H. Bowles of Boston.

He attended schools in Champlain, and in Boston.

In October 1937, he transferred from Boston Latin to live with Ellen H. Craigue of Wolfeboro. Her father, Henry F. Hayes of Mirror Lake, was his guardian.

Mr. Bowles graduated from Brewster Academy in 1941, received a BA from UNH in 1949, an MEd from Plymouth State in 1952, and an EdD from the University of Rochester in 1967. He completed post-doctoral study at the University of Houston in 1978.

Dr. Bowles was a Professor Emeritus at SUNY Oneonta. As a professional educator for more than 35 years, he was on the faculty of SUNY Oswego and Geneseo. He taught at the University of Florida and Trent Polytechnical College in Nottingham, England, and had a number of publications in professional journals.

During World War II, he was a prisoner of war for 25 months in Stalag Luft XVII-B in Krems, Austria. He collaborated with his wife, Marnie, in preparing and publishing "A Directory of NH Ex-POWs," KingswoodPress, 1997.

While serving with the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal. He was honorably discharged in October 1945, with the rank of M/Sgt.

Family members include three sons and a daughter, Roderick D. of Newmarket, N.H., Todd F. of Santa Barbara, Calif., Jodd P. of Auburn, Maine, and Kris T. Palmatier of Schoharie, N.Y..

There will be a private burial in the Tuftonboro Cemetery.

Robert A. Harrison

COBLESKILL — Robert A. Harrison, 77, of Hammerstone Village, died on Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Mr. Harrison was born on March 16, 1927, in Utica, a son of Legrand and Ida Morgan Harrison.

His wife, Irene Ferris Harrison, died on Sept. 9, 1998.

He served with the United States Army from 1946-1947. Mr. Harrison retired several years ago from Bendix Corp. in Sidney, where he was an accountant. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Cobleskill.

Surviving Mr. Harrison are his sons, the Rev. Mark A. (Debbie) Harrison, Cape Coral, Fla., Lance B. (Nancy) Harrison, Oneonta, and Bret R. Harrison, Cobleskill; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours, and a graveside service will be held at a date and time to be announced. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Janice M. Noxon

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Janice Maria Noxon of Pyramid Pines Estates, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at her home. She was 52.

Born on Sept. 10, 1951, in Niskayuna, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Shirley (Guiles) Sitors.

Janice worked as a Night Check Supervisor at the Wilton Price Chopper, and loved spending her free time outdoors.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeannine Lynn Noxon, a student at Syracuse University; a son, Joseph James Noxon of Binghamton; her brothers, Stanley, Robert and Thomas Sitors, all of Schenectady; her sisters, Patricia Welch of Galway, and Sharon Yates of Independence, Miss.; her longtime companion, Leslie Terry of Saratoga Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private at the convenience of the family.

Catherine M. Strait

MILFORD — Catherine "Taffy" Marsh Strait of Milford passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a long struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Catherine was born on Aug. 4, 1918, in Sacramento, Calif., to Clyde and Marvel (Edner) Marsh. She grew up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California. After her parent's deaths in 1931, she and her sisters (Lorene and Doris) lived together in Placerville, Calif.

She attended the University of California at Berkeley majoring in Public Speaking and Dramatics.

From 1940-1942, she worked for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1943, she became a Naval Officer and served as an Office Manager, Administrative Assistant, Recruiting Officer, and Company Commander and various locations in the United States.

In 1943, she married Army Sergeant William Strait. At the end of World War II they moved to Milford, where they ran the Strait family farm.

In the 1960s Catherine returned to SUCO and Hartwick College receiving her MS in Education and teacher certification. From 1960 until her retirement in 1979, she taught English at Laurens Central School and then Milford Central School, where she also directed school plays.

Upon her retirement she divided her time between New York and Florida, and took up her true passion which was acting. Her most notable roles were Ethel Thayer in SUCO Community Summer Theater of "On Golden Pond" and Betty Meeks in the "Foreigner." Her credits also include the Leatherstocking Theatre Company productions of "Harvey," "Inherit the Wind," and "Lend Me a Tenor," Tri-Town Theatre production of "The Foreigner" and Orpheus Theatre's production of "My Fair Lady." She also acted with the Stage Door Theater productions every winter for many years in Sarasota, Fla. The theater goers of the United Methodist Church of Milford will always remember her as the famous "Mrs. Underwear."

In recent months she was a resident of Hampshire House in Oneonta.

She was a volunteer at Bassett Hospital and an active member of the League of Women Voters, Westville Grange, Otsego County Republican Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Milford Methodist Church. She traveled throughout the world.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Lorene Marsh Debs Cole.

She is survived by her sister, Doris Starrett of Victorville, Calif.; her daughters, Marsha Stock and companion Marsha Yetman, of Oneonta, and Sharon Velasco also of Oneonta; her son, Steven Strait and wife JoEllen, of Fresno, Calif.; her grandchildren, Victoria Velasco of Sacramento, Calif., Angela Hester of Alexandria, Va., Nick, Brad and Jill Strait, of Fresno. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Nate and Josh Hester; and a sister-in-law, Isabelle Aney of Milford.

Catherine was known for her great zeal for life. The family wishes to thank the health care professionals of Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown for their care during the last days of her life, especially Drs. Croft, Bissoon, Hameed and Schenk. Thanks also to Catskill Area Hospice.

We ask that you remember Catherine as you support and attend a presentation by a local theater company such as Orpheus Theatre or Leatherstocking Theater Company.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2004, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Milford Methodist Church in Milford, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Agnes M. Miller

HAMDEN — Agnes M. Miller, 83, passed away April 1, 2004, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Hamden, the daughter of Vern and Hazel (Densmore) MacDonald.

She married Clyde Miller in Hamden on Oct. 28, 1938.

A lifelong area resident, she enjoyed her home. She worked for 17 years as a cook at the Hamden Inn.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the Hamden Presbyterian Church; Ham-Del Belles Club in Hamden for 40 years; and as chairperson of the Election Board in Hamden for 40 years.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde, at home; a son, Dennis (Jane) Miller, Hamden; a daughter, Carolyn Jones, Hamden; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Dennis; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Conklin, Goshen; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, Arthur MacDonald; three sisters, Dorothy Clark, Ruth Miller and Arlene Jester, predeceased her.

A memorial service will take place on Sunday, April 4, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Calling hours will precede the service from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Humane Society of Central Delaware County.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dorothy A. Terpak

UNADILLA — Dorothy A. Terpak, 75, of Unadilla passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Stony Point, the daughter of the late Albert and Lillian (Lent) Ryder.

She was married to Carl D. Terpak on Dec. 31, 1947, in the state of Maryland. Mr. Terpak predeceased her on June 7, 1984.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and James Griffin of Mahwah, N.J.; her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Nancy Terpak of Haverstraw, Albert Terpak of Seattle, Wash., and Richard and Susan Terpak of Unadilla. Also survived by 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Carl Terpak Jr.; her brothers, Edward and George Ryder; her sisters, Elinor Babcock and Gloria Correale.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, April 2, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad, PO Box 579, Unadilla, NY 13849 in memory of Dorothy A. Terpak.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Carole S. Kott

SIDNEY — Carole Sramek Kott, 66, of Sidney, and formerly of Trout Creek, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, in Cooperstown.

She was born July 31, 1937, daughter of Wilbur and Ruth (Rapson) Jewell in Peekskill.

Carole had been employed by IBM in East Fishkill, American Plastics in Bainbridge and Keith Clark in Sidney.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter No. 502, Sidney.

Carole was an active bowler and loved to golf. She enjoyed camping and fishing, as well.

Carole is survived by her parents, Wilbur and Ruth Jewell of Sidney; her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Lyla Jewell of Sidney; four sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Janice Vitek of Bainbridge, Derry and Sandy Sramek of Unadilla, Michael Sramek of Florida and William and Kathy Sramek of Trout Creek; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Larry Phoenix of Trout Creek; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Wilbur Richard Jewell Jr.

Friends may call Sunday, April 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 5, at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Carroll Cemetery in Trout Creek.

Memorial contributions may be made in Carole's name to the Bassett Dialysis Foundation, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Marie S. Post

HOBART — Marie (Smith) Post, 81, of Hobart, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born in Hobart, on Feb. 1, 1923, the daughter of Bernard and Clara (Bell) Smith.

She married Everett S. Post on Feb. 24, 1951. He predeceased her on Nov. 16, 1997.

They owned and operated a chicken farm in Hobart Township.

Mrs. Post was an active member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, where she served as a lay leader, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the United Methodist Women organization and sang in the choir. She was a 1941 graduate of Hobart High School.

She is survived by two daughters, Melanie Ogu of Keyser, W.Va., and Marybeth Chien of Buckhannon, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Erica and Laurie Ogu and Nathan and Rebekah Chien; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Van Buren of Hobart; and a brother and sister-in-law, James and Fay Smith of Ballston Lake.

A brother, Bernard Smith, predeceased her.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, April 5, at 2 p.m. at Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart, or Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
