F. Douglas Bowles

WOLFEBORO, N.H. — F. Douglas Bowles, 80, of Wolfeboro, N.H., died March 14, 2004, in Santa Barbara.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Boston, Mass., son of C. and Cassandra H. Bowles of Boston.

He attended schools in Champlain and in Boston.

In October 1937, he transferred from Boston Latin to live with Ellen H. Craigue of Wolfeboro. Her father, Henry F. Hayes of Mirror Lake, was his guardian.

Mr. Bowles graduated from Brewster Academy in 1941, received a BA from UNH in 1949, an M.Ed. from Plymouth State in 1952, and an Ed.D. from the University of Rochester in 1967. He completed post-doctoral study at the University of Houston in 1978.

Dr. Bowles was a Professor Emeritus at SUNY-Oneonta. As a professional educator for more than 35 years, he was on the faculty of SUNY-Oswego and Geneseo. He taught at the University of Florida and Trent Polytechnical College in Nottingham, England, and had a number of publications in professional journals.

During World War II, he was a prisoner of war for 25 months in Stalag Luft XVII-B in Krems, Austria. He collaborated with his wife, Marnie, in preparing and publishing "A Directory of NH Ex-POWs," KingswoodPress, 1997.

While serving with the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal. He was honorably discharged in October 1945, with the rank of M/Sgt.

Family members include three sons and a daughter, Roderick D. of Newmarket, N.H., Todd F. of Santa Barbara, Calif., Jodd P. of Auburn, Maine, and Kris T. Palmatier of Schoharie, N.Y..

There will be a private burial in the Tuftonboro Cemetery.

Darryl L. Bundy

OTEGO — Darryl L. Bundy, 60, of Otego passed away Monday, April 5, 2004, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born March 13, 1944, in Oneonta, the son of Burnette B. and Norma (Lobdell) Bundy.

A lifelong resident of Otego, Darryl had worked for the Town of Otego at one time and was a security officer for Medical Coach, Oneonta, for 12 years as well as working with his father, Burnette Bundy.

He served in the United States Army in the 1960s.

Darryl is survived by his parents, Burnette B. and Norma L. Bundy of Otego; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Ronald Jerauld of Berkshire; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Darryl L. Bundy will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Craig Merritt, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, Otego, will officiate. A viewing hour will be held on Friday, April 16, 2004 from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by calling hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home, when the family will be present.

Interment will be in Bundy Cemetery, Otego, at a later date.

It is requested that memorial contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney, NY 13838 or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Darryl L. Bundy. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Camilla Fasullo

DELHI — Camilla "Millie" Fasullo, 87, of Arbuckle Hollow, Town of Delhi, passed away early Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born May 18, 1916, in New York City, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Miskovsky, and married Michael H. Fasullo, May 20, 1939, in Hicksville. He died May 3, 1980.

A homemaker, Millie lived in Hicksville for many years, moving to Delhi in 1976, where she was an active leader in senior citizen activities.

She was a member of the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church and its Missionary Society; the Delhi Senior Citizens and its "Perky Set" square dancers, and also organizer of the craft club, greatly enjoying needlepoint; and also taught square dancing at Oneonta YMCA.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael H. Jr., and Jane Fasullo of Setauket; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother and sister.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, by her pastor, the Rev. Daniel McCollister, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions may be made to O'Connor Hospital Building Fund, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Leona R. Gulick

ONEONTA — Mrs. Leona R. Gulick, 68, of Oneonta died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born July 9, 1935, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Byron and Naomi (Williams) Baker.

Leona attended Edmeston Central School. She married Graham L. Gulick. Mr. Gulick predeceased her on June 18, 1990.

Leona was a tool treater at Sur-cut Manufacturing in Oakridge, Tenn., which was owned and operated by her husband.

She enjoyed going to lawn sales with her aunt, Leona, going to the Maple Festival in Bainbridge and crocheting, making doilies and handkerchiefs.

She is survived by three brothers, Byron Baker of North Carolina, Robert Baker of California and Ralph Baker of Norfolk; one sister, Elmina Merkley of Albany; and one aunt, Leona Hitchcock of Oneonta.

Leona was predeceased by one aunt, Elmina Baker.

At Leona's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. She will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris. She will be interred in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta, at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Walter G. Hillis

DELHI — The Rev. Walter G. Hillis died Dec. 21, 2003, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi, after a several year struggle with Alzheimer's.

He was born Jan. 30, 1928, in New York City, to Harold and Ruth Caldwell Hillis, formerly of Davenport and New York City, both predeceased.

Walter graduated from Horace Mann-Lincoln High School in Manhattan, received his B.S. from Cornell University School of Agriculture in 1949, a Master of Divinity from Colgate Rochester Seminary, and a Masters in History Education.

Walter's first Church Ministry was as Assistant Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Greece. Upon leaving there he taught history in high school for one year before accepting a position of pastor at the Congregational Church of Charlemont, Mass. In 1964, he returned to his beloved New York State as minister for the Bridgewater Pilgrim Congregational and Clayville Churches.

He retired after serving there over 30 years and moved to his grandparent's home, Fayette and Fannie Hillis, in Davenport, where he became an active member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church.

Walter began his joy of overseas travel while at Cornell when the Westminster Youth group first traveled to Europe in 1947. His favorite travel was to England and Ireland and his last trip, the summer of 2001, was to Northern Ireland, the cherished land of his ancestors. Pictures and stories of his adventures were always shared and enjoyed upon his return. Walter was truly a scholar of history and his family genealogy.

He was a devoted son to his mother, who predeceased him in 1991.

Walter will be deeply missed by his many loving parishioners, friends and family far and wide.

He is survived by his sister, Jane Thayer of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., brother-in-law, Roger E. Thayer, also of Martha's Vineyard; two nieces, Peggy Thayer of Martha's Vineyard, and Cyndy Thayer of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; a nephew, David Thayer of Laramie, Wyo.; and a grandnephew, David Thayer II of San Diego, Calif.

A memorial service and burial will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, North Kortright. Dr. Carol Wilson will officiate.

Contributions in memory of Walter Hillis may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Planned Parenthood, Bridgewater Congregational Church and the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements were by the MacArthur Funeral Home.

Thomas McQuinn

UNADILLA — Thomas Cravens McQuinn of Route 4, Unadilla, died at his home on April 8, 2004, after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was born June 20, 1923, on Staten Island, to Robert and Mary Jenkins Cravens McQuinn.

Thomas was in the Army Air Force during World War II from 1943 to 1945, serving in Italy and Africa as a C-47 crew chief.

He attended Paul Smith's College in Saranac Lake, Rutgers University and after the war graduated from University of Michigan School of Forestry with a BS in Forestry in 1952.

Thomas married Betsy Wood in Morristown, N.J., on Sept. 15, 1951.

He was employed by the United States Government as a cartographer in Suitland, Md. While raising their family in Huntingtown, Md., he grew tobacco for a cash crop. Thomas was a fervent environmentalist and supported the Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Federation.

His hobby was as a philatelist, especially first day covers. He appreciated jazz and classical music.

Thomas is survived by his wife Betsy, of Unadilla; daughter, Laura Shea and husband Michael Kratz of Owings, Md.; sons, Michael Thomas and wife Shawn McQuinn of Bancroft, W.Va., and Matthew Louis and wife Wendy McQuinn of Hedgesville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Caitlin Kratz, Margaret Kratz, Megan McQuinn, Ian McQuinn and Emily McQuinn; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Robert McQuinn; and sister, Marianna McQuinn.

There will be no calling hours or local service. The interment will be at a later date in the family plot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Milford, N.J.

Those wishing to may send a memorial donation in Thomas' memory to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Earle F. Vance

BINGHAMTON — Earle F. Vance, 52, of Binghamton died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at his home.

He was predeceased by has father, Maynard R. Vance.

He is survived by his children, Shannon and George Pennington, Groveport, Ohio, and Ian Vance, Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Cory and Kayla; his mother, Helen Vance; a sister, Elaine and Brian Yakey; brothers, Gary and Mari Vance, Walton Vance, Maynard and Elly Vance; and several nieces and nephews.

Earle was a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh and was a Grants Administrator, having worked at the University of South Florida, Ohio State University, and Marshall University.

He enjoyed golf and played in the Broome County Open Pro-Am.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Champlain, with graveside services in the spring.

Oscar Waag

NEW LISBON — Oscar Waag, 95, of New Lisbon died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born in Germany on July 12, 1908. He moved to the United States of America as a young man, and married Alice Barmes. A marriage of 68 years. She died Sept. 8, 2002.

He was employed as a machinist with R.H. Hoe & Company of the Bronx, after his retirement, he moved to New Lisbon in 1972, and was well-known for his love of animals, his gardening and his woodworking. He also enjoyed building rock walls around his home, and was regular patron of the Brookside Tavern.

Oscar is survived by his two daughters, Ingrid Andresen of Burlington Flats, and Carolyn Waag of Mount Vision; his granddaughter, Lisa Clark of Burlington Flats; and his grandson, Tom Andresen of Whitensville, Mass. As well as his great-grandsons, Michael and Justin Clark.

There will be no calling hours, and memorial services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Darryl L. Bundy

Barbara Thompson

WALTON — Barbara N. Thompson, 77, of Walton passed away Monday morning, April 5, 2004, at home after a long illness.

"Barbie," as she was known to her family and friends, was born in Little Falls on Nov. 7, 1926, the daughter of the late Calvin A. and Nellie Hurlburt Newitt.

She was educated in Little Falls schools and lived there most of her life. In her youth, she helped her father at the Newitt Funeral Service by playing organ at services. She worked as a clerk at the Endicott Johnson Shoe store in Little Falls, and later at Little Falls High School as an audio-visual department aide.

In 1974, she moved to the town of Salisbury on Ives Road to "The Ranch" where she and her late husband, Robert K. Thompson, lived for 18 years.

She enjoyed growing and canning vegetables, feeding the birds and watching the wildlife from her kitchen window.

In 1992, she moved back to Little Falls, when she became manager of the Snyder Apartments.

She is survived by a daughter, Candace Warlow of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Cal Courtney of Walton; a granddaughter, Sarah E. Courtney of Oneonta; two sisters, Marilynn Jones of Rome and Joan Bunker of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her grandson, Calvin N. Courtney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 12, at Christ Episcopal Church, Walton.

Calling hours will be held after the service Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.

Burial will be at Caroga Lake.

Memorial contributions in Barbie's memory may be made to the Walton Fire Department and EMS, 61 West St., Walton, NY 13856 or Christ Episcopal Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton.

Estella Taylor

MILFORD — Estella Taylor, 83, of Milford, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Valley Health Services Inc., in Herkimer, where she had resided since December 2002.

She was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Gloversville, the daughter of Amos and Florence (Swartz) Empie. She attended Milford High School.

Estella married Samuel Taylor in 1948. He predeceased her in 1996.

She worked at Astrocom Electronic until her retirement in 1985.

Estella was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Senior Citizens, the Milford Methodist Church and was a devoted grandmother. She had also been a Scout leader in the Milford Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.

She is survived by two sons, Anson (Butch) Knapp Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Milford and Ronald Taylor and his wife, Ruth, of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Sandra Ferguson of Portlandville and Sharon Butler and her husband, William, of Westville; grandchildren, Heather Miller and her husband, Frank, of Burlington Flats, Scott Butler of Milford, Judy Rankins and her husband, Dan, of Oklahoma, and Ben Taylor of Oklahoma; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Lauren Miller of Burlington Flats.

She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Naples of Jacksonville, Fla., her aunt, Pauline Greeley of Oaksville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Kay Tarbox, Beatrice Konchar, Philiminia Liner and Thomas Ann Naples.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at the Milford Methodist Church in Milford, when the family will be attendance.

A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
