John G. Hathaway

AJIJIC, Mexico — It is with deep regret that the passing of John G. Hathaway is announced.

John died peacefully at his Lakeside home on Dec. 18, 2003, of heart failure.

Born in Cooperstown, Oct. 26, 1924, son of Lynn W. and Alma (Kernan) Hathaway, he served in the Army during WWII. After the war, John studied industrial design at Pratt Institute, then moved to Australia for two years of travel and work in Sydney and Mt. Isa.

He returned to the States, married and settled in St. Claire Shores, Mich. Employed at General Motors Technical Center for 25 years, he took an early retirement in 1980. He and his wife, Alice, settled in Ajijic, where his interests in archaeology led to several Maya digs in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, and travel to China, Russia, Nepal and Peru.

John was active in the Lakeside Little Theater during the 1980s, when the theater was being financed and built. He had roles in several plays during that time and contributed many articles to "El Ojo De Lago," where he served as associate editor for more than eight years.

John is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter, Elinor in Northfield, Minn.; sons, Tom in Hopewell, Pa., and Jerry in Ajijic; his eight adult grandchildren; three sisters; and a half-sister.

A memorial tribute to John was published in February in "El Ojo De Lago." It reads, "John was a good friend, a valued colleague and one of the last of Lakeside's `old-timers,' part of that early migration of ex-pats who helped to create much of the wonderful community the rest of us enjoy today."

Barrett W. Jester

EAST MEREDITH — Barrett W. Jester, 55, of East Meredith, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the Stratton Veterans Medical Center in Albany.

He was born July 27, 1948, in Treadwell, the son of Wayland and Aileen (Pinney) Jester. He married Mary Neer on May 2, 1981, in East Meredith.

Barrett enjoyed the great outdoors as well as watching the great variety of local birds.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1973.

Barrett is survived by his wife, Mary Jester of Oneonta; his children, Wayland Jester of Florida, Forrest Jester of Washington, Barrett Jester Jr. of Oneonta and Garrett Jester of Oneonta; his stepchildren, Wesley Merwin of Stamford, Melissa Stannard of Ilion and Randy Stannard of Ilion; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Onna Behrer of Reading, Pa., Marie Broadwell of Reading, Pa., Wayne Jester of East Meredith, Marvin and Evelyn Jester of Jefferson, David and Robin Jester of Medusa, Tanya and Tim Pernice of Meridale, Mary Ellen and Robert Halstead of East Meredith, Michael and Jackie Jester of Davenport and Melodie and Robert Wright of Davenport; along with several grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

It was Barrett's wish that there be no formal funeral service or calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Philip E. Meade

RICHMONDVILLE — Philip E. Meade, 70, of Richmondville, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, following a short illness.

He was born May 2, 1933, in Jefferson, son of Grover and Julia Meade.

Philip married Ethel C. Becker on June 8, 1957, in Charlotteville.

He served in the United States Army from March 16, 1953, to Feb. 26, 1955.

Philip was a truck driver for Kortright Dairies in Harpersfield. A lifelong resident of Schoharie County, he was a member of the Town of Florida Fire Department for years. He was also a member of Family Bible Church in Amsterdam and the Summit Conservation and Cherry Valley Conservation Clubs. He was an avid hunter and fisherman his whole life.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Meade; sons, Philip Jr. of Kennewick, Wash., Paul and Patrick of Richmondville and Perry of Howes Cave, and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 12, at the First Baptist Church, Main Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Kenneth Sisson officiating. Family and friends are invited to a get-together at the Richmondville Volunteer Emergency Squad Building, 16 Holmes St., Richmondville, following the service.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice Care of Schoharie County.

Arrangements are by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Donald R. Rathbone

GILBOA — Donald R. Rathbone, 60, of state Route 990B, Gilboa, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at his residence.

Born on Nov. 27, 1943, in Wheat Point, he was the son of the late Oliver Rathbone and Frances Smith Rathbone.

Mr. Rathbone was a high-voltage lineman, employed by the New York Power Authority at the Blenheim-Gilboa plant, where he worked until January.

He is survived by his mother, Frances Smith Rathbone; his daughters, Deborah and Rachel; his sister, Judy Wyckoff; and brother, Jack Rathbone.

His father, Oliver; a daughter, Rebecca; and a brother, Dean, predeceased him.

Viewing will be at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham, on Monday, April 12, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820.

Evelyn Purchell

MOUNT UPTON — Evelyn Purchell of Highway 8, Mount Upton, passed away peacefully, Friday evening, April 8, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born in Hobart, the daughter of the late H.D. and Florence Craft Bouton. Evelyn married Ralph A. Purchell at the home of her family in East Delhi.

She was an inspector for the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney, for several years. Mrs. Purchell was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph A. Purchell, of Mount Upton.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Apri1 13, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel. Friends are invited to call from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Donald F. Carey

ONEONTA — Donald F. Carey, 80, of Oneonta died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Treadwell, the son of William and Ethel (Houck) Carey.

He attended Treadwell School, where he was an all-star basketball player.

Don married Louise Bruce on May 13, 1956. Mrs. Carey predeceased him on Aug. 3, 2002.

He worked as a meat cutter for 22 years at the A&P and then later at the P&C in Oneonta.

Don enjoyed going and playing bingo with his wife, Louise. He loved spending time with his family, and also watching them play ball. Don was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his six children and their spouses, JoAnne (Carey) and Raymond DeGraaf of Oneonta, Deborah E. Carey of Astoria, Queens, Julia M. Carey of Morris, Cindy (Carey) and John Hendrickson of Milford, Thomas W. Carey of Oneonta, and Penny Sue (Carey) and Jeff Songdale of Morris; six grandchildren, Jennifer Rachelle Carey of Astoria, Queens, Raymond Michael and Tiffany Jo DeGraaf of Oneonta, Kendra Lyin Carey of Oneonta, Michael and Lisa Hendrickson of Davenport, and Raymond Hendrickson of Bloomville; one great-grandson, Nathaniel DeGraaf of Oneonta; one sister, Ethel Frazier of California; two brothers, Martin Carey of the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, and Lawrence Carey of Unadilla; one brother-in-law, Billy Bruce of Endwell; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Don was predeceased by three brothers, Carlton Carey Sr., James Carey and Pauly Carey.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Calling hours will be offered on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Donald F. Carey.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Edith M. Henry

ONEONTA — Edith M. (nee Cole) Feeney Henry, 81, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Schenectady, the daughter of Leonard and Rose (VanVolkenburg) Cole.

Edith married Paul T. Henry Sr. on Nov. 29, 1980, at the Elks Club in Oneonta.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Schenevus; Order of the Amaranth Queen May Court 106; and the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Chapter 116, where she was past matron and past grand representative of Saskatchewan.

She is survived by her husband, Paul T. Henry Sr., of Oneonta; her children, Patricia and husband Paul Pierce of South Amherst, Mass., Rose Marie and husband Everett Jester of Thonotosassa, Fla., William and James Feeney, both of West Edmeston, Paul T. Henry Jr. and wife Pam of Medina; grandchildren, Michelle and Terry Hopper, Darren Pierce, Nichole and Craig Freeman, Sean and Katie Pierce, Michael Jester, Russell and Mary Henry, Christopher and Liz Henry; great-grandchildren, Tanner and Kyler Hopper, Myles and Kiernan Freeman, Nathaniel and Ella Pierce, Dominic, MacKenzce and Kyleigh Jester and Drew Henry; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William B. Feeney in 1974; sisters, Lillian, Lela, Nellie; and a brother, Robert.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta. There will be an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. Calling hours will also be held from 1 to 2 p.m., with the funeral service starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, at the funeral home, with Richard Knudson of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Chapter 116 or the Order of the Amaranth Queen May Court 106. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Carolyn Houghton

SCHOHARIE — Mrs. Carolyn Joyce (Hanson) Houghton, 73, of Driftwood Apartments, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, where she had been a patient since March 1.

Mrs. Houghton was born Feb. 25, 1931, in Langley, S.C., a daughter of Roy and Lillie Mae (Blevins) Hanson.

She had lived at Driftwood Apartments for the past 10 years and previously in Central Bridge.

She was educated in the Methodist Children's Home in Atlanta, Ga. She was a homemaker and housewife dedicated to raising her family. Mom truly missed her friends at bingo these last few months.

Mrs. Houghton was married to Albert E. Houghton in 1949, and until his death June 28, 1986.

Survivors include five sons, George E. (Norma) Houghton, of Fonda, Michael L. (Diane) Houghton, of Lykers, Jeffrey B. Houghton of Cooperstown, Willis A. (Sherri) Houghton of Schenectady, and Calvin S. Houghton of Schenectady; one daughter, Caroline M. Salisbury of Schenectady; seven grandchildren, Jeremy and Justin of Greensboro, N.C., Emmie of Columbia, S.C., Jamie of Colonie, Nathan, Simon and Calvin of Schenectady; and three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Araya and Nicholas of Greensboro, N.C. Survivors also include several brothers and sisters from Georgia.

She was predeceased by one son, Timothy Houghton, in 1985.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. following the calling hours with Mr. Dennis Radford officiating.

Burial of cremains will be held at a later date in the Charleston Cemetery, Charleston-Four-Corners.

The family had requested that memorial contributions may be made in memory of Carolyn Houghton to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Our family wishes to thank the many loving caregivers at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Theresa A. Ruff

UNADILLA — Theresa A. Ruff, 66, of 33 Bridge St., Unadilla, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 8, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Feb. 12, 1938, in Amsterdam, the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine (Pirog) Zabo.

She was married to Edson L. Ruff on Nov. 24, 1956, in Tribes Hill. Mr. Ruff predeceased her on Dec. 5, 1998.

Theresa has been a 20-year resident of Unadilla, and loved to play cards, bingo, bake, cook, and was an avid reader. She loved all her family, and her dog, Missy.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Sidney and Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Groat of Unadilla; her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Melanie Ruff of Unadilla, Robert and Sheri Ruff of Sidney, Russell and Heidi Ruff, Jonathan and Ronda Ruff of Bainbridge, and Todd and Vicki Ruff of Unadilla; her sisters, Helen Tabasco of Amsterdam, and Joan Gonzales of Walton; her brother, Edward Zabo of Martinville; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and good friends.

She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Hasenfuss.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, NY 13838 or Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St. Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Ronald E. Feist

DOWNSVILLE — Ronald Edward Feist, 70, of Downsville passed away at home April 8, 2004, following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Staten Island, the son of Elizabeth and Conrad Feist.

He married Norma Torres on Feb. 3, 1968, in Staten Island.

Mr. Feist was a Naval veteran of the Korean War serving from 1951 until 1953. He retired after 31 years of employment as a Stationary and Refrigeration Engineer at Proctor & Gamble.

He was a drummer with the Immaculate Conception Drum and Bugle Corps 1938-1939, and the Royal Blue Drum & Bugle Corps 1940-1949, a board member of the Staten Island Thunderbirds Drum & Bugle Corps 1960-1965, and later the Statenaires Drum & Bugle Corps. He was an early member of the Staten Island Barbershop Chorus, a member of the Lions Club, and an inactive member of the American Legion. For many years he enjoyed model railroading.

He is survived by his wife at home; daughters, Lara Ferraco, Dawn Bertola and Angie Rostawanik; and a son, George Feist; 24 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Priester; and a brother Conrad Feist.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Downsville, with Father Flannery as celebrant.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Burial will be at Downsville Cemetery, Downsville.

Contributions in his memory, made to the Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated. They can be mailed to 116 Main St., Delhi, NY 13573.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Hannah F. Bruce

DELHI — Hannah Falck Bruce, 95, passed away on Friday morning, April 9, 2004, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Hannah was born on March 29, 1909, on the family farm near Greenbrier, Pa., the daughter of Katie M. Schoffstall and William S. Falck.

Hannah attended the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, received her Registered Nurse degree in 1932, and in the following years held several positions as a staff, private and head nurse.

Hannah married Peter P. Bruce on Nov. 22, 1939, in Philadelphia. After marriage, she traveled the eastern United States following Peter's moves in the service during World War II. In 1948, she worked side-by-side with Peter to establish a photographic studio in Tyrone, Pa. They moved to State College, Pa., in 1962, and operated their business as Infinity Photography until retirement in 1978.

In retirement, they traveled extensively, pursued their interest in family genealogy, and kept close connections with family.

Hannah is survived by her husband, Peter P. Bruce; their daughter, Barbara Bruce and husband O. Frederick Onasch of Delhi; grandson, Greg Onasch of Delhi, grandson, Timothy B. Onasch of Lowell, Mass.; granddaughter, Emily Hannah and husband Jonathan A. Walsh of Schenectady; and brother, Norman Falck and wife Gladys of Lewisburg, Pa.

A family service was held Saturday, April 10, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, officiated by the Rev. Joseph Bokel, chaplain of Countryside Care Center and the Rev. Lisa Heckman, pastor of the United Ministry of Delhi.

Hannah will be laid to rest in the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Scott Ara Kinsey

SIDNEY — Scott Ara Kinsey, 39, of Sidney, entered into rest on Saturday, April 10, 2004, following a car accident.

Scott was the son of the late John E. Kinsey Sr. and the late Marian Clapper Kinsey. Scott was also pre-deceased by one brother, James H. Kinsey.

He is survived by his fiancee, Jennifer Kukenberger; two daughters, Ariel, 18, and Whisper, 4; one son, Scott Jr., and one stepdaughter, Kayla Henne, 9, all of Sidney; three brothers, John E. Kinsey of Athens, Kent C. Kinsey and his wife, Anna, of Morris, and Willard Clapper of Tennessee; four sisters, Linda J. Allen of Tallequah, Okla., Sheila C. Alderson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Cynthia J. Kinsey of Sidney, and Andrea Carmen of Earlton. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dedicated to overcoming his disabilities, Scott found freedom by riding his motorcycle, and could express any emotion through his poems, several of which were widely published.

Scott was an avid debater and had an opinion on many subjects. He was a loving and devoted father who was always determined to make every moment count with his children.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for his children in care of Kent Kinsey, 267 Country Highway 8, Morris, NY 13808, or to the charity of one's choice.

Scott will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends, and even his four-legged friends, Spanky and Lucy.

Service arrangements will be announced in The Daily Star on Tuesday, April 13, 2004.
