ONEONTA — The committal service for Dean W. McGowan Jr., 77, who passed away on Jan. 22, 2004, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Estella E. Taylor

MILFORD — In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy for Estella E. Taylor, 83, of Milford, who died Thursday, April 8, 2004, may be made in the form of memorial contributions to the Milford Emergency Squad, PO Box 359, Milford, NY 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Helen R. Greiner

FRANKLIN — A graveside committal service for Helen R. Greiner, who died on Dec. 21, 2003, will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Veronica Reynolds

COOPERSTOWN — Veronica E. Reynolds, a devoted Catholic, wife, mother and grandmother, joined our Lord on Saturday, April 10, 2004.

A former English teacher, Nana, as she was known by all who knew and loved her, was born on Nov. 24, 1914, in New York City, a daughter of Peter and Yud (Vega) Eicas.

She moved with her family to Franklin, when she was 10 years old. After graduating from Franklin High School, Nana attended Oneonta Normal School, graduating in 1939.

At her first teaching job in Cherry Valley, she met her beloved husband, Francis M. "Pete" Reynolds. After their marriage on June 27, 1942, and his return from World War II, they moved to Cooperstown, and proceeded to raise a family of eight children.

In 1956, Nana returned to teaching at Cooperstown Central School, first as an eighth-grade English and Social Studies teacher, then as head of the Junior High English Department.

While teaching, she attended SUNY Oneonta part-time, receiving her master's degree in English in the early 1960s. In the spirit of lifelong learning, Nana continued her studies, earning more than 60 credits past her masters. She retired from teaching in 1980, but continued as a volunteer, helping elementary children learn to read in a one-on-one program.

Nana was a daily communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Altar Society, Cemetery Committee, and was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.

During her years at home raising her children, she made jams and jellies for the family and also sold them to Tom Goodyear's Cary Mead Farm, the Farmers' Museum Gift Shop, as well as Danny's and Michael's Markets.

Nana's life revolved around her great love of God, family and teaching children. With this love, Nana touched the lives of everyone she met. She lived her life with God in her heart.

Nana was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis M. "Pete" Reynolds; and a brother, Peter Eicas.

Nana is survived by a sister, Anne; and her five daughters and three sons, Margaret and Robert Kelly of Scarsdale, Frances A. Novak of Cooperstown, Alice and Bruce Donnan of Piffard, Michael and Ellen (Schellhammer) Reynolds of Fairport, James and Debbie (Holland) Reynolds of Fairport, Mary R. and "Butch" Welch of Cooperstown, Joe and Lisa (Bresney) Reynolds of North East, Pa., and Anne and Jim Daurio of Cranford, N.J.; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A heartfelt thanks to Fr. John Rosson, Jane Patrick, Joan Tripp and her many friends who provided Communion and prayers daily. The family is also appreciative of the support and service of the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor officiating.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions, may be made to St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326, the Reynolds Scholarship Fund, Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Anne K. Buinoud

ONEONTA — Mrs. Anne K. Buinoud, 95, formerly of Oneonta and most recently of The Meadows, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 15, 1908, in Switzerland, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Mader) Jochheim.

She was married to Louis F. Buinoud. He predeceased her on Feb. 10, 1977.

Anne moved to New York City in 1929 and worked as a dressmaker for a time. After her stay in New York City; Anne moved to Oneonta in 1965.

A brother, Mr. Fritz Jochhiem of Royal Oak, Md., predeceased her in April of 1979.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in Oneonta Plains Cemetery later.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Richard P. Gerg

BAINBRIDGE — Richard P. Gerg, 71, of 95 North Main St., Bainbridge, and a former Arizona resident, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 10, 2004, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Hancock, the son of the late Othmar and Dorothy Reider Gerg.

On Feb. 23, 1962, he married Barbara Toepfer in Phoenix, Ariz.

For several years Richard was employed by the State of Arizona as a computer program assistance analyst. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving his country during the Korean War.

Dick loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He spent many hours fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gerg, of Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Suelaine Moss of Tempe, Ariz.; brother, Ott R. Gerg of Bainbridge; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Douglas Neidlinger of Bainbridge. He is also survived by four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the Afton and Bainbridge United Methodist Churches, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to The Hospital, 43 Pearl St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Jesse J. Watson

MOUNT UPTON — Jesse J. Watson Sr., 82, of the Rogers Hollow Road, Mount Upton, passed away Sunday afternoon at Binghamton General Hospital, Binghamton.

Jesse was born March 22, 1922, in Nowata, Okla.

He was a United States Navy veteran, serving his country during WWII.

He is survived by two sons, Harold J. Watson, of Mount Upton, and Jesse J. Watson Jr., of Burnsville, Minn.; three daughters, Donna Bonacci, of Sidney, Eileen Demosphene, of Seaside, N.J., Elaina Gue, of Sidney, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two daughters Patricia Garrison and Delores Doane predeceased their father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 15, from the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street. Sidney, with the Rev. Father Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Friends are invited to call Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of his services at 1 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Marion C. Eastwood

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Marion C. Eastwood, 94, passed away Friday, April 9, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a short illness.

She was born April 6, 1910, in Ilion, the daughter of Brainard R. and Corenne (Black) Schofield.

She married Charles K. Grimm in 1946. He passed away in 1973. She married Robert T. Eastwood on June 7, 1980. He passed away in September 1995.

Her early years were spent in Royal Oak, Mich., where she graduated from high school in 1928. She was secretary to Walter S. Butterfield of the Butterfield Theatre Circuit, Detroit, Mich., for several years. In 1942, she enlisted in the United States Signal Corps until 1945. In 1946, she returned to Springfield Center, and was employed by William C. Smalley of the Smalley Theatres in Cooperstown. She later was secretarial supervisor at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital until her retirement in 1975. She had been a resident of Woodside Hall since 1996.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center, a charter member of the Walter Eggleston Post 7128, VFW Auxiliary, Cooperstown, and the Cooperstown Chapter 201, Order of the Eastern Star. She organized the Springfield Historical Society in 1959 and was town historian for several years.

Survivors include several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Edwin B. Schofield.

At her request, there will be no calling hours. She will be cremated at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A graveside memorial service in the Springfield Center Cemetery with burial to follow will be announced.

Contributions in Marion's memory may be made to the Friends of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Scott Ara Kinsey

SIDNEY — Scott Ara Kinsey, 39, of Sidney, entered into rest on Saturday, April 10, 2004, following a car accident.

Scott was the son of the late John E. Kinsey Sr. and the late Marian Clapper Kinsey. Scott was also pre-deceased by one brother, James H. Kinsey.

He is survived by his companion, Jennifer Kukenberger; two daughters, Ariel, 18, and Whisper, 4; one son, Scott Jr., 7, and one stepdaughter, Kayla Henne, 9, all of Sidney; three brothers, John E. and Dee Kinsey of Athens, Kent C. and Anna Kinsey of Morris, and Willard and Sherry Clapper of Tennessee; four sisters, Linda J. Allen of Tallequah, Okla., Sheila C. and C.A. Alderson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Cynthia J. Kinsey of Sidney, and Andrea and David Carman of Earlton. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dedicated to overcoming his disabilities, Scott found freedom by riding his motorcycle, and could express any emotion through his poems, several of which were widely published.

Scott was an avid debater and had an opinion on many subjects. He was a loving and devoted father who was always determined to make every moment count with his children.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for his children in care of Kent Kinsey, 267 County Highway 8, Morris, NY 13808, or to the charity of one's choice.

Scott will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends, and even his four-legged friends, Spanky and Lucy.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, Commercial Street, Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randy Palada officiating. Immediately following the service there will be a gathering at the Grange Hall, across the street from the church.

Elsie Oppenheimer

STAMFORD — Elsie Oppenheimer, 97, of Stamford, passed away, Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1906, in Germany, the daughter of Isaac and Babette Sichel.

Elsie came to the United States in 1937. She was employed as a cook on Fifth Avenue in New York City. She later had her own small shoe business, which she operated out of her home.

She married Fred Oppenheimer in New York City in 1938. He predeceased her on April 24, 1984.

She and her husband Fred settled in Stamford in 1952. There she made many friends. Elsie was a very social person and loved to visit with anyone she came across. She was dedicated to her family and her home. She loved cooking and was known as the best cook by her family. Elsie also loved to have flowers in her home. She was an active member of the Harpersfield Senior Citizens.

In February of 2002, Elsie moved into Robinson Terrace. There she was greeted by the wonderful support staff of the Courtyard wing. She was considered family by all the nurses and staff and was affectionately known as "Oma." It was there that she was introduced to her special friend Vera. The love and care she received while in Robinson Terrace by the staff and Hospice volunteers will forever be greatly appreciated by Elsie and her family. In her last years at the nursing home, she was involved and participated in the Closing Group.

Elsie cherished her citizenship in this country and was very proud to be an American. She enjoyed the many freedoms granted to everyone here in the USA. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor and her straight forward honesty.

Elsie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Leon Johns, of Stamford; two grandchildren, Laurie Johns of Carson City, Nev., and Gregg and Amber Johns of Middleburg; three great-grandsons, Pat, Max and Andrew; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family with Rabbi Donald Neil Roberts officiating.

Burial will take place in Jefferson Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Annie Fagergren

ONEONTA — Annie Fagergren, 73, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born April 13, 1930, in New York City, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Chapman McSporran) Massey.

Annie was predeceased by her husband, Sven A. Fagergren, whom she married on June 17, 1950, in Brooklyn.

She worked for the Bank of Richmondville as the secretary to the president, and was a member of the St. Paul's and Zion Lutheran Church in Richmondville.

Survivors include a son, Sven T. Fagergren of Schoharie; a granddaughter, Kayla Fagergren of Largo, Fla.; a brother, Thomas Massey and a sister-in-law, Joan Massey, both of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

The funeral service will be held 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

Burial will be at the Richmondville Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hartwick Seminary.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Aleen Bowers

NORWICH — Mrs. Aleen Bowers passed away Saturday evening, April 10, 2004, at Chenango Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Morris, the daughter of Lynn and Inez (Colburn) Hoag.

Aleen worked for many years at the Norwich Shoe Company in Norwich. She enjoyed gardening, her many house plants and needlework. She and her longtime companion, Ed Cummings, enjoyed attending auctions and cooking.

She is survived by her companion, Ed Cummings; a daughter, Glenda Ardron; three sons, Lynn, John, and Steve Bowers, all of Norwich; four sisters, Ella Petrucci, of Schenectady, Doris Hoag, Kitty Wilcox and Eleanor Brigham, all of Garrettsville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her extended family of children, Sue Coles, Inez and Kevin Cummings, Mary and Andrew Coles, Penny and Herb Allen, Joan and Joe Smith, Sherrie and Dave Convertino, Edwin and Amy Cummings, Cheryl Hilts, Bill Cummings; and several extended family grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Aleen was predeceased by her first husband, Glen Bowers; her son, Donald; her parents; four sisters, Ramona Alger, Patricia Parker, Geraldine Ray, Leona Hoag; and three brothers, Leland, Douglas and Robert Hoag.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, at the Johnston Funeral Home, 60 Broad St. Morris. The Rev. Romeyn Kipp of the Holmesville Baptist Church will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, before the funeral service.

Interment will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Norwich Emergency Squad, Norwich, NY 13815, in memory of Aleen Bowers.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Bastine Caracciolo

GREENE — Committal services for Bastine "Bucky" Caracciolo of Greene, formerly of Bainbridge, will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 2 p.m. in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene. Full military honors will be accorded by the World War II veteran members of the Greene and Bainbridge American Legion Posts.

Arrangements are being provided by the Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Greene.
