Isaac M. Nieves

SIDNEY — Spc. Isaac Michael Nieves, 20, of Sidney was killed in action April 8, 2004, when his combat patrol was attacked in Bani Saad, Iraq.

He was born Oct. 5, 1983, son of Gilbert and Maria C. Nieves in Ohio.

Isaac graduated from Sidney High School in 2001, where he played football, track and field and was the captain of the wrestling team his senior year. He was also very active in the color guard with his future wife, Amy.

Isaac was very service-oriented. He was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 88 in Sidney and an altar boy at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he was a member.

After graduation, Isaac entered the United States Army on Aug. 10, 2001. His occupational skill was 21B Combat Engineer. Spc. Nieves was assigned to the 82nd Engineer Battalion stationed in Germany. He was deployed to Kosovo and then to Iraq. Spc. Isaac Nieves has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal and the Go To War On Terrorism Service Medal posthumously.

He is survived by his wife, Amy Nieves; parents, Gilbert and Maria Nieves; grandmother, Alice Freeman; sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Dan Wayman, United States Air Force; sisters, Priscilla, Gwendolyn, Kimberly, Doreen and Victoria Nieves; brothers, Gilberto, cadet at West Point, Kevin and Nicholas Nieves, brothers, Gilbert Davilla and Trosky Davilla; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and LuAnn Holdrege; sister-in-law, Erin Holdrege; Amy's grandmother, Doris Smith; Amy's uncles, Steven and Paula Smith and Timothy and Kathleen Cole-Smith, commander United States Navy, retired; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call today, April 19, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 5 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating.

Burial with military honors will be private in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Isaac Nieves Boy Scout Scholarship Fund, care of Sidney Community Foundation, PO Box 333, Sidney, NY 13838 or the Dollars for Scholars, Isaac Nieves Memorial Scholarship, Sidney Federal Credit Union, Attention: Shirley Finch, 42 Union St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Howard J. Barrett

WEST WINFIELD — Howard James "Happy" Barrett, 59, of Meeting House Road, formerly of Richfield Springs, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1944, in Cooperstown, son of the late William and Elizabeth Kiminski Barrett. Howard was raised and educated in Richfield Springs.

In 1968, he answered the call of his country, serving during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970 with the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

On Oct. 24, 1970, he married Ruth Ann Pavlot in Saint Joseph's Church, West Winfield. They have resided in West Winfield for the past 32 years. For 25 years he was employed by Eastern Rock, retiring in 1987.

Howard had a strong love for the outdoors and loved to hunt with his son, Cory, and his brother, Leo. He also enjoyed his trucks, his many days at the Cedarville Country Store and the time spent with his friends.

He was an exempt member of the West Winfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Michael S. Pliseck VFW post in Herkimer.

He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Ruth Ann; a daughter, Tammy Simmons and her friend Don Birmingham of Ilion; one son, Cory Barrett and his fiancee Jolene of Cedarville; five cherished grandchildren, Kyle Simmons, Tyler Birmingham, Mykaela and Jennah (Peanut) Barrett, Jeremy Wheatly and his anticipated grandson, due in August; two brothers, Leo and his wife, Darlene, Barrett of Richfield Springs, and Paul Barrett of South Carolina; three sisters, Irma and her husband, Jim, Vickerson of Springfield, Irene Davis and Jean Kicklighter, both of Georgia; his in-laws, Michael Volo of Columbia Center, Peter and Tina Pavlot; brother-in-law, Peter H. Pavlot and his wife, Amy; sister-in-law, Dorothy Decker; aunt and uncle, Reginald and Sophy Scanlon, all of West Winfield; his godchildren, Dale Decker Jr. of California, and Amanda Scanlon of West Winfield; his canine buddy, Duke; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother, Joseph Barrett, two sisters, Helen Clemons and Ann Volo and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Barrett.

A funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Terence Healy will officiate. Following the Mass Mr. Barrett will be laid to rest with full military honors in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the West Winfield Volunteer Ambulance Corp. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Paul Knickerbocker

PITTSFIELD — Paul A. Knickerbocker, 81, of Pittsfield died Friday, April 16, 2004.

He was born on May 28, 1922, in Morris, the son of Roy and Louise (Turner) Knickerbocker.

He was married to Helen (Wright-Larrabee) Knickerbocker on Sept. 7, 1976, in Morris.

He had been employed by the town of Morris Highway Department for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and had served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Paul is survived by his wife, Helen, of Pittsfield; a daughter, Dora Hauke of Moab, Utah; his grand-daughters, Kristin and husband, Winfred, Wayman of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Amber Hauke of Moab; a brother, Milton (Bud) Knickerbocker and wife, Dorthea, of Morris; sisters-in-law, Doris Harrington of Greene, Lorraine Wright of New Port Ritchey, Fla., and Donna Wright of Oxford; a brother-in-law, David Wright and wife, Alietta, of Greene; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and a very special godson, Lee Hoag.

He was predeceased by a son, Carl Knickerbocker.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, on May 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Taylor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in Paul's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Anne Kusko Burns

UNADILLA — Anne Kusko Burns, 87, of Unadilla passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born May 30, 1916, in Englewood, N.J., to the late Alex and Sophie (Kyrsztopcuk) Kusko.

She was married to Robert L. Burns on April 22, 1948, in Oneonta. Mr. Burns predeceased her on April 5, 1950.

Anne had been a resident of Unadilla since 1948, and formerly owned and operated the Long River Inn in Unadilla for 37 years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and its Rosary Society in Sidney, and a former member of the Unadilla Women's Club.

Anne is survived by her brother, Andrew Kusko of Oneonta; and three nieces and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Katherine Kusko.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, directly off Exit 10 of I-88, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor or Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday, April 21, 2004, from 10 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Renfred A. Walling

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Renfred Andrew Walling, 61, of New Britain, Conn., died Friday, April 16, 2004, in Norwich.

He was born Feb. 2, 1943, in New Berlin, the son of Renwick and Eleanor (Vanwarner) Walling.

His ex-wife, Margaret Walling, survives him.

He spent his childhood in the Bainbridge and New Berlin areas. He attended Central New York School for the Deaf in Rome.

He was a CNC machinist for the Ripley Company of Cromwell, Conn.

Renfred is survived by his son, John Walling of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Jennifer and Juan Dominguez of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren, Kai and Evan Walling and Kobe Dominguez; one brother, Clayton Walling of South New Berlin; one aunt, Gessie (Ruth) Hoag of South New Berlin; and nephews, Troy, Kevin and Robert Walling.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, April 19, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Axel O.P. Axhoj

ONEONTA — A memorial service for Axel O.P. Axhoj, 91, who passed away March 17, 2004, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor, officiating.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Norman Knapp

NORTH PORT, Fla. — The committal service for Norman Knapp, 83, formerly of Oneonta, who passed away Jan. 26, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are by Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Dean W. McGowan

ONEONTA — The committal service for Dean W. McGowan Jr., 77, who passed away Jan. 22, 2004, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Oneonta American Legion Post 259.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

William Warnken

ONEONTA — A service to celebrate the life of William Warnken Jr., who died on March 27, 2004, will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Breuninger, officiating.

Friends may call on Friday, April 23, 2004, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bernice M. Gonser

ONEONTA — Bernice M. Gonser of Oneonta died April 17, 2004, in Delhi.

She was born June 16, 1925, in Oneonta, to Lee and Della Cross Gonser.

She attended Eastman School of Music and State University of New York Teacher's College, Oneonta, where she received her teacher's certificate in 1946 and a master's of science in elementary education in 1954.

Miss Gonser taught school for more than 30 years, and many will remember her junior high social studies class in Oneonta. She retired from Oneonta in 1981 but continued to teach others at Oneonta Senior Center.

Bernice loved teaching and being active in the music program at First United Methodist Church of Oneonta where she was a member. She also loved to travel, especially Europe or anywhere she could learn more.

Bernice is survived by cousins, Evelyn Knowles, and her daughter, Carolyn Knowles, both of Oneonta, Betty Gonser of Colliersville, Billy Gonser of Oneonta, Teri and husband Edward Lynch of Oneonta, Tom and wife Lana of Chatham, and Sharon Gonser of Colliersville.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral service will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Clemow of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be later in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Oneonta Dollars For Scholars, PO Box 1083, Oneonta, NY 13820, which was very dear to her heart.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edith W. Smith

RALEIGH, N.C. — Edith W. Smith, 85 years old, formerly of New Berlin, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Raleigh.

She was born Oct. 30, 1918, in South New Berlin, the daughter of Leon and Leona Wells.

She married Bernard K. Smith on Jan. 2, 1937, in Norwich. He predeceased her Sept. 15, 1988.

She spent her childhood in the South New Berlin area. She was a graduate of South New Berlin High School in 1942.

Edith enjoyed crocheting and giving her loving creations to friends and family. Her family was her life.

She retired from Scintilla of Sidney. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.

She is survived by her children, Bernadine Bagg and husband Douglas of Edmeston, Linda Bronson and husband Curtis of Raleigh, N.C., Lamont "Monty" Smith and wife Gail of Edmeston; longtime dear friend, Gilbert Smith of New Berlin; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Melissa Vickers of Greene, and Eleanor Hendrickson of Kirkwood.

She was predeceased by Lavada Matson and Allan Wells.

Calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Michael Amos, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Gustave F. Mugglin

WALTON — Gustave F. Mugglin, a longtime resident of Walton, died on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at his home. He was 92.

Mr. Mugglin was born March 29, 1912, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Joseph K. and Mary T. Jahn Mugglin.

He was educated in Sidney, Ohio, and graduated from Sidney High School in 1928. He earned an associate degree from Delhi Ag and Tech in 1934.

On Sept. 21, 1934, he married Florence Hoyt at the Mundale United Presbyterian Church in Mundale.

Mr. Mugglin was a rural letter carrier in Walton for 36 years before retiring in 1975. He was a vice president and president of the Rural Letter Carriers Association of New York State. He was clerk of the Walton School Board for 16 years and was the bookkeeper for Williams Motor Company for over 20 years.

Mr. Mugglin lived in Walton for the past 70 years. Before that, he lived in Sidney, Ohio.

He was a Past Master of the Walton Lodge 559 of the F&AM, a member of the Walton United Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Delaware County Men's Choir, a barbershop musician as a member of the Waltones. He was known for his musical abilities, playing many instruments, but his real love was singing. He was a member of several choirs.

Mr. Mugglin is survived by his wife, Florence; his sons, Malcolm G. (Doris) of Deal, N.J., and Carl J. (Margaret) of Walton; his daughter, Marsha (George) Seeley of Bethel Park, Pa.; his sister, Mabel Emerson of Montana; and 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His brothers, Harvey, Ernest and Calvin, predeceased him.

At Mr. Mugglin's request there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the Walton United Presbyterian Church, 58 East St., Walton.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Special Gifts Fund at the Church in his name would be appreciated.

Julia Zitko

WORCESTER — Julia Zitko, 88, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004, at her home in Worcester.

She was born July 1, 1915, in Davis, W.Va., the daughter of John and Mary (Sernel) Mikoletic. She was predeceased by her parents and her stepfather, John Davis.

Julia was a graduate of Schenevus Central School, class of 1933. She worked for Clarks Restaurant in Cooperstown before her marriage to John Zitko on Sept. 11, 1937, in Worcester.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, Ladies of Knights Templar, the Worcester Women's Club, the Worcester Bridge Club and the Order of the Eastern Star Schenevus Chapter 138 for 61 years, where she was three-time matron and a 15-time conductress for the Schenevus Chapter 138. In 1986, she was the District Grand Matron of Otsego Schoharie Order of OES.

Survivors include her husband, John Zitko; three children, Sandra and husband Vallance DeVisser of Rome, Arlene and husband Michael Josef of Clifton Park, and Paulette and husband Edward Nickerson of Rome; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Rode of Delmar, and Edith Mostar of Cobleskill; a brother, Frank Davis of Delmar; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Davis; and two sisters, Mary Vodapivc and Olga Davis.

Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the celebration of life at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Worcester, NY 12197 or the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 138, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.
