William Amols

COOPERSTOWN — William Amols, MD, a resident of Cooperstown for the last 35 years, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004, after a lengthy illness, with his wife and family at his side. He was 86.

Born June 11, 1917, to the late Nathaniel and Fannie Amols (nee Sude) in Brooklyn. He was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School, New York University and the New York University College of Medicine, where his natural talent for humor gave way to a number of self-authored and directed musicals, plays and skits.

Dr. Amols served as a medical officer in the United States Navy from 1943-1946, operating with the amphibious forces. Upon his return to the United States, he set up a private medical clinic in Great Neck, until 1950, when he began his residency in Neurology at the Neurological Institute at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York, achieving the notable title of Chief Resident. Subsequently, he held clinical appointments at the Neurological Institute of New York City Hospital, Montefiore Hospital, and the Neurological Institute of Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital where he remained for 18 years.

Dr. Amols relocated to Cooperstown in 1969 and ultimately retired in 1982 as Neurologist-in-Chief at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. It was at the Bassett Hospital that he successfully created and ran a previously unrealized Neurological department.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Amols was a highly sought after public speaker, not only for his eloquence and erudite nature but also for his ability to impart humor on any subject, requiring him to travel widely to hospitals throughout the country. His passion for medicine and education never subsided.

He served as a consulting physician for the New York City Police Department, the Supreme Court of the State of New York and the U.S. Department of Labor. He was a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the New York County Medical Society, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease, the Otsego County Medical Society and held office in the New York Neurological Society.

From 1955, until his retirement, he held a professorship in Neurology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. In 1992, he received citations for 50 years of service as a devoted physician from New York University's School of Medicine, the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Otsego County Medical Society. Dr. Amols is also listed in Who's Who in the East.

In the field of his specialty, Dr. Amols administered the first American clinical trials of the drug Tegretol, used in the treatment of a painful condition called trigeminal neuralgia, or "tic douloureux." His groundbreaking contribution to the field was acknowledged in news sources ranging from popular national journals to medical journals to interviews on television and radio.

He was also recognized as a leading authority on spacticity (skeletal muscle spasms), and authored papers on the treatment of convulsions and emesis. One who always wore more than one hat, he was a practicing physician, a professor and a clinical researcher.

An avid environmentalist, Dr. Amols founded and served as president of the Croton Aqueduct Society while residing in Irvington-on-Hudson in Westchester before moving upstate and was a force behind the preservation of the aqueduct. He was a member of the board of directors of the Irvington Chapter of the Citizens committee for the Hudson Valley. Locally, he served on the board of directors of the Otsego County Conservation Association, accepting the position of Chairman of the anti-pollution committee.

In his personal pursuits, Dr. Amols was equally enthusiastic. Taking up an interest in airplanes at the Cooperstown-Westville Airport, he flew sailplanes as well as obtaining his pilot's license for power planes. He was a member of the Soaring Society of America. In addition, he was an avid boater, antiquarian book collector and student of ancient Egyptian history and biblical history. Having earlier owned a 1956 Bentley, he was also a member of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club.

Dr. Amols is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline Taliaferro Amols; three children, Marguerite (Gigi) of Naples, Fla., Nathaniel of Tampa, Fla., and Abigail of Cooperstown; and his sister, Hazel Marcus of Blue Hill, Maine. In addition, he will be sorely missed by many devoted former patients and students.

In lieu of a funeral, Dr. Amol's family will receive friends at their home, Glimmerglen Winter Cottage, Lake Road, Cooperstown, from 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2004. Please join them to celebrate Dr. Amol's life.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
