Frank F. Selan

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — A graveside committal service for Frank F. Selan, who died Jan. 17, 2004, in Florida, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Leora G. Shaver

DOWNSVILLE — On Wednesday, April 21, 2004, Leora G. Shaver of Downsville, passed away at the Delaware Valley Hospital.

She was born on June 10, 1919, in Downsville, the daughter of Victor and Charlotte Frisbie Croop.

Leora spent her entire life in the Downsville area and was an active community member. In 1948, she married G. Freeman Shaver, who predeceased her many years ago.

Leora was an officer in the Downsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was very active in the Colchester Community Church and past president of the Colchester Senior Citizens Club. For at least 10 years she managed the Colchester Senior Meals Site. In 1999, she was named as Delaware County Outstanding Contributor.

She is survived by one daughter, Jean Shaw of Downsville; five grandchildren, Vicki (Darryl) Houck, Debbie (Philip) Odell, Rick Shaw and Kim Shaw, Missy (David) Lawrence, all of Downsville, and Cindy Shaw (Hans Tuneblom) of Longmont, Colo.; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Croop of Colchester; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Shaw; and three brothers and two sisters, Clarence, Raymond and Floyd Croop, Isabelle Tompkins and Mabel Briggs.

According to Leora's wishes, she was cremated and her ashes will be interred with her parents later in the Paige Cemetery.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at the Colchester Community Church, Main Street, Downsville.

The family will be in attendance at the Downsville Firehall, following the service.

Please consider a donation in Leora's memory to the Colchester Community Church Organ Fund, or to the Downsville Emergency Squad.

Kenneth R. Craft

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Kenneth Robert Craft, 18, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born April 8, 1986, in Cooperstown, the son of Robert and Judith Craft.

He was a senior at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, where he was an honor student. He was a member of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department and attended the Richfield Springs Bible Church. He enjoyed golf and computers.

He was very family-orientated and very happy with life.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Judith Craft, of Springfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeremiah and Lyndi Craft; and nephew, Elijah, all of Utica; grandparents, Richard and Kathy Craft of Springfield, Lynn Tubbs of Maryland; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in the Richfield Springs Bible Church, Richfield Springs, with Pastor Alan Miller and Pastor Terence Brant, officiating. There will be a luncheon following the service at the Springfield Fire House.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with a firemen's service at 8 p.m.

Contributions in Ken's memory may be made to any volunteer fire department or any church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Jacob C. Emhof

NEW BERLIN — Jacob C. Emhof, 95, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1909, in Vernon, to Jacob J. and Wilhelmina (Klossner) Emhof.

On Sept. 3, 1933, he married Mary McNamara of Center Lisle, who survives.

He is survived by his brothers, Ernest of Oneonta and Stuart of Tallahassee, Fla. He is also survived by his daughter, Wylma B. Smith of Bainbridge; and his son, Jacob P. Emhof, Plymouth. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Stephen Smith Jr., of Sidney, Marsha (Smith) Hayes of Bainbridge, Robin (Emhof) Robbins of West Oneonta, Rhonda (Emhof) Foulds, Justin, Texas, and Rodney Emhof, Sabattus, Maine; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Frederick and Wesley, both of Edmeston, and his sister, Louise Bice of South Edmeston.

He worked for Kraft Foods at the South Edmeston plant for many years, retiring early due to illness. He was also the Teamster's Union representative during his employment at Kraft.

He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for most of his adult life. In 1939, he became scoutmaster of Troop 60 of South Edmeston. He participated in many other scouting activities throughout the years especially with the Otschodela Council, based out of Oneonta. For many years he experimented with and raised a variety of rose plants.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, 17 North Main St., New Berlin, with the Rev. Stephen L. Reese, Columbus Community Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the services. Cremation will follow with a graveside service at a later date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Southside, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Carl F. Schidzick

EDMESTON — Carl F. Schidzick, 71, of Edmeston died at his home on Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2004, with his family by his side.

He was born Dec. 16, 1932, in Cooperstown, the son of Fredrick and Mildred (Burdick) Schidzick.

On July 5, 1958, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, he married Dawn Osborn, who survives.

Carl attended the former Hartwick High School and Laurens Central School. He was a member of the Hinman Hollow Rod & Gun Club. The volunteer fire service was an important part of Carl's life and he was one of the original members of the Hartwick Emergency Squad, and a past member of the Hartwick Seminary and Hartwick fire departments. He rode in the old fire truck in the parade in Hartwick in 2003.

He was currently a member of the Edmeston Fire Department serving in the fire police and as unofficial chairman of the 50/50 raffle.

Carl had been employed at the Victory Store in Oneonta, Uncle Henry's farm in Hinman Hollow and as a carpenter working with his uncle, Lyle Burdick. He was most recently employed at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center. This employment was dear to his heart; not only did it allow him the opportunity to work outdoors, but it also involved the excitement of motorcross racing.

In addition, Carl was also the "boss" of the annual wood bee at his parents farm in Hinman Hollow. An avid outdoorsman, the highlight of his hunting career came on his last hunting trip when he took a 10-point buck off Dutch Hill in Milford.

In addition to his wife, Dawn, Carl is survived by his children and their spouses, Elizabeth and Ken Brunelle, Diane Wienclawski, Christa and Richard Whiteman and Brian Schidzick; his grandchildren, Kenneth, Nicholas and Amanda Barrows, Brianna Hawes, Savannah and Richie (George) Whiteman, Mark and Michael Wienclawski; and two great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy LaGasse, Esther and Charles Hughes and Elaine and Merritt Harvey.

Funeral services for Carl will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

Calling hours for Carl will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 26, 2004, with a firemen's' service at 8 p.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Edmeston Fire Department or the Edmeston Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are with Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Margaret Simmons

SUMMIT — Mrs. Margaret A. Simmons, 90, of Route 10 died at her home on Saturday, April 24, 2004, following a long illness.

Mrs. Simmons was born on Aug. 22, 1913, in Devine Corners, a daughter of Charles and Anna Lawrence Anderson.

She was valedictorian of the Otego Central School, Class of 1932, and she graduated in 1935 from Oneonta Normal Teachers School.

Mrs. Simmons was an elementary teacher in Norwich, Schenevus and finally in Cobleskill Central School, from where she retired in 1976.

She married C. Albert Simmons on June 27, 1953, and Mr. Simmons died on May 25, 1996.

Mrs. Simmons was a member of the Summit United Methodist Church, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Schoharie County Retired Teachers Association, the former Rising Star Chapter OES and the Schoharie County Snow Birds Club.

Surviving Mrs. Simmons are her daughters, Joan Chase, Lawyersville, and Karen Simmons Karker, Richmondville; sons, C. Henry Simmons, Lawyersville, and G. Michael Simmons, Summit; sister, Helen Snyder, San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call Tuesday, April 27, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at the Summit United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jason Thompson, former pastor of the church, officiating. Following cremation at Vale Crematory, Schenectady, the cremains will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 327 W. Main St., Cobleskill, NY 12043 or American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2630, North Canton, OH 44720.

Frances R. Utter

ONEONTA — Frances R. Utter, 77, passed away Friday, April 23, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta, where she had been a resident since June of 2001.

She was born March 18, 1927, in Union Beach, N.J., the daughter of Joseph V. and Marie I. (Moore) Rooney.

After high school graduation, Frances received a business degree from IBM Business School in Newark, N.J.

She married Ivan Utter Sr. on May 14, 1949, in Worcester. He has predeceased her.

Frances was employed in the business office for Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta for many years. She was an active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, where she was a Eucharistic minister and a Faith Formation instructor.

Survivors include her son, Ivan Utter; two grandchildren, Jason and Heather Jones; a great-grandson, Seth; three brothers, Leo and wife, Murlie, Rooney of Perris, Calif., George and wife, Cathy, Rooney of Worcester, and Raymond Rooney of East Worcester; a sister-in-law, Martha Rooney of Louisville, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Winegard, Elsie Hughes and Patricia Allocca; two brothers, John and Joseph Rooney.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate Mass Cards in loving memory of Frances.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Bernita M. Yager

DELANSON — Bernita M. Yager, 68, of Cole Road, Delanson, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, April 24, 2004, at the Glendale Nursing Home, Scotia.

She was born April 26, 1935, in Sidney Center, the daughter of the late Jay and Mildred Fay Charles.

On March 15, 1953, she married Chauncy Yager in Sidney. She attended school in Delhi and later in Sidney. She was a former Sidney and Utica resident.

Bernita was a retired nurse's aide, having worked for several nursing facilities in the Schenectady area.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Chauncy Yager, of Delanson; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Claude Roe of Schenectady; son, James H. Yager of Texas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marjorie and Nelson Peterson of Unadilla, and Beverly and William Ireland of Kendall; two grandsons, David and Claude Roe of Schenectady; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her three sons, David, Gordon and Mark Yager, predeceased their mother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of her service at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 1406 Monroe St., Endicott, NY 13760.

Richard D. White

EXETER CENTER — Mr. Richard D. White, 61, entered into eternal rest on April 25, 2004.

He was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Butler, N.J., the son of Gordon D. and Emily M. (Manella) White, who have predeceased him.

After moving to Schuyler Lake, he was employed at Kraft in West Edmeston. Upon retirement from Kraft he worked at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, until the time of his illness.

Dick is survived by his brothers, Gordon White of Exeter Center, and Robert and his wife, Yvonne, White of Butler, N.J.; and a nephew, Jeffery White and his wife, Renee, of West Milford, N.J.

Dick was well liked by many people and will be greatly missed.

There will be no public services.

Contributions in Dick's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gladys Y. Merena

ONEONTA — A committal service for Gladys Y. Merena, who died on Jan. 5, 2004, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Dorothy Bostwick

MARYLAND — A committal service for Dorothy M. Bostwick, who died on Jan. 28, 2004, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery, with the Rev. Peter Mudge officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

Raymond Tallman

WORCESTER — The committal service for Raymond L. Tallman Sr., 85, who died Jan. 24, 2004, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, with the Rev. Jane Pykus officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Arthur W. Hewitt

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Arthur W. Hewitt, 85, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He had been a resident of The Meadows for the past two years.

He was born in Haverstraw, the son of Minnie and Ernest Hewitt.

He married Rose Reilly in Haverstraw. He served in World War II, at Normandy Beach on D-Day. He received Purple Hearts twice and a Bronze Star. After being wounded, he was honorably discharged.

He worked as an electrician at Hewitt Brothers Electricians and as a roofer. He was a member of the VFW.

Survivors include three children; two sons, Arthur V. Hewitt of Lebanon, Pa., Robert Hewitt and his wife, Kim of Stony Point, and a daughter, Sharon Stalter and her husband, Gary of Middlefield; grandchildren, Kristie, Marybeth, Michael, A.J., Joey, Shawn and Beau of Lebanon, Pa., Michael, Shannon and Kelly of Middlefield, Alex and Amanda of Virginia; a great-granddaughter, Jenna Lee Stalter; and a brother, Clarence Hewitt.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Fred, William, Harry Foster, and Melvin, and a grandson, Sean P. Hewitt.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mr. Hewitt's memory may be made to The Meadows.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Reginald Haskin

CONESVILLE — Reginald Haskin, 68, of Conesville died Sunday, April 25, 2004, in the town of Gilboa as a result of a logging accident.

He was born July 9, 1935, in Gilboa, the son of Leonard Haskin and Evelyn Young.

He married Bertha Amor on July 12, 1980, at the Grand Gorge Methodist Church.

He graduated from Gilboa-Conesville Central School in 1954. He served in the United States Army in Korea.

Reggie worked for many years at Greendell Packing in Prattsville rising to the position of manager. He worked at Provimis in Bloomville, and the Roxbury Creamery. He also worked for the Town of Gilboa, retiring in 1999.

Reggie loved to hunt and take care of his home and his dogs. He was an avid gun collector.

He was a member of the VFW in Stamford and the American Legion in Conesville.

Reggie is survived by his wife, Bertha Haskin, Conesville; two sons, Jeffrey and Liz Haskin, Roxbury, and Kenneth Haskin, Roxbury; one granddaughter, Seana Haskin, Roxbury; two stepsons, Randy and Terry Moore, Illinois, and Clay and Astrid Moore, Texas; four stepgrandchildren, Bradley Moore, Danielle, Jason and Matthew Moore; and two brothers, Robert and Joann Haskin, Conesville, and Thomas and Pat Haskin, Conesville. He is also survived by his first wife, Loretta Haskin, Roxbury. He will be greatly missed by many loving nieces, nephews and neighbors.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in the United Methodist Church in Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Kristina Hansen and the Rev. Larry Majors officiating.

Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Reginald Haskin to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
