NORTH BAY — William J. Ballard, 89, formerly of Earlville, passed away April 10, 2004, at the Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, from Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville.

Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 or the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 67, Earlville NY 13332.

Mildred J. Kenney

COOPERSTOWN — A committal service for Mildred J. Kenney, 79, of Cooperstown, who died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

David Earl Morton

UTICA — Graveside memorial services for Mr. David Earl Morton, 46, who passed away April 22, 2004, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Cherry Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow.

Theda F. Gibson

PITTSFIELD — Theda F. Gibson, 77 years old, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at her home.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1926, in Columbus, the daughter of Walter Webster and Alta Gould.

She married Laurence Gibson on Jan. 7, 1961. He died on Dec. 6, 1989.

She spent her childhood in South Edmeston and New Berlin. She attended the New Berlin Central School.

She is survived by her companion, Herbert Card, of Pittsfield; a stepson, Donald Gibson of Cairo; grandchildren, Donald Gibson of Cairo and Donna Obeldobel of Manassa, Va.; and five great-grandchildren; sister, Wanda (Donald) Shimer of Florida; cousins, Fred Pope of New Berlin, Sidney Pope of Texas, Paul Pope of Georgia; and one aunt, Margaret Hill of New Berlin.

She worked at Taco in Sherburne.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Tianderah No. 631 in Sherburne.

Calling hours are from 11:30 a.m. until funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad or the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home of New Berlin.

Betty N. Dobsa

NEW KINGSTON — Betty N. Dobsa, 79, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1924, in Margaretville, the daughter of Harold M. and Leona (Gavette) Scott.

She married Paul A. Dobsa on May 29, 1946, in Woodbury. He died March 13, 1989.

Betty retired on Sept. 1, 1989, after working as a teller and bookkeeper. She started in 1942 with Peoples National Bank, retiring from NBT Bank as head teller.

She was a lifelong area resident and a member of the United Presbyterian Church. Betty graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1941. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, flowers and people.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Paula Durmiaki, Rhinebeck; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Carol Dobsa, Great Falls, Va.; granddaughters, Sarah and Seneca; and sister, Barbara Dietrich, Schuylerville.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the New Kingston Cemetery, New Kingston, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Burial at New Kingston Cemetery, New Kingston.

Memorial donations in memory of Betty N. Dobsa may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Anna Rose Wilsey

ROME — Anna Rose (Johnson) Wilsey, formerly of Rensselaer County, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Rome Hospital Residential Health Care Facility, after a brief illness.

Born in East Syracuse, she lived in the capital district until moving to Lee Center 10 years ago. She was a homemaker. While in Lee Center, she volunteered in the Foster Grandparent program of Rome and was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Stephen E. Wilsey; sisters, Betty Hill, Mildred Stagnitti, Ella Abbott and Keitha Cesario; brothers Rodney, Walace and Stillman Johnson; and daughter-in-law, Robin Wilsey.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruth (Joseph) Arruda of Lee Center; three sons, Stephen A. (Bernadette) of Burden Lake, Frank E. (Nancy Smalley) of Hartwick, and Willard B. (Sandra) of Castleton; two brothers, Rosevelt and Fred Johnson, both of Canastota; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Jessica, Tammy and Frank Jr. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Robin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. from the Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk., Rensselaer. Interment will be in New Rural Cemetery, East Greenbush. Friends may call immediately before the funeral from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Joyce Harrington

NEW BERLIN — Joyce V. Harrington, 66 years old, of New Berlin died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at her home in New Berlin.

She was born on May 4, 1937, in Hancock, the daughter of Clifford and Shirley (Hinkley) Mallery.

On Feb. 13, 1955, she was married to Daniel Harrington in Edmeston. He died on March 17, 2004.

She attended Edmeston Central School.

She had many good friends, loved her family and was very proud of her two grandsons. Joyce was a good wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all.

Joyce is survived by two sons, Larry Harrington and his fiancee, Shelly Montgomery, of New Berlin, and Jeffery and his wife, Tammy Harrington, of Pittsfield; two grandsons, Matt and Ryan Harrington; one brother, Arthur Mallery, Florida; one sister, Helen Beagle, Hancock; and several stepbrothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the funeral service. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 12:30 p.m. in the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chenango County Area Hospice, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Bruce I. Gorton

BAINBRIDGE — Bruce I. Gorton, 75, of 18 Bixby St., Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, April 29, 2004, at the Bassett Healthcare Center, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Oneonta, the son of the late George and Sarah Murdock Gorton.

On June 10, 1951, he married Jeanne R. Ives in Nineveh. She predeceased him on Sept. 30, 2001.

Bruce was a graduate of the Bainbridge High School, Class of 1945. He was employed as a chemist for the Borden's Chemical Company from 1945 to 1992, Bainbridge. He was a former member of the Bainbridge Rotary Club and served on the Bainbridge Fire Department and Emergency Squad for 25 years. Bruce served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was an avid golfer and bowler for many years.

He is survived by his son, Edward I. Gorton of Woburn, Mass.; three daughters, Cynthia Callaghan of Sidney, Deborah Kimball of Bainbridge and Lisa Page of Bainbridge; sister, Doris Cook of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Loretta Gorton of Winter Haven, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Shawn and Jeremy Ostrander, Christopher Callaghan, Ben Kimball, Bryan Callaghan, Kate Kimball and Samantha Page; great-grandson, Jacob Aaron Ostrander; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; three sisters-in-law, Alice Barnhart of Sidney, LouAnna Ives of Greene, and Roberta Ives of Bainbridge; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Louis and Virginia Ives of Rochester.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Monday at the funeral chapel with his family in attendance from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Bainbridge Fire Department and Emergency Squad if desired.

Phyllis M. Grant

DELHI — Phyllis M. Grant, 74, of Delhi died April 28, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Beerston, the daughter of Theodore and S. Amelia (Howland) McLean.

She married Lloyd Grant on Oct. 16, 1949, in Hamden Presbyterian Church, Hamden.

Mrs. Grant was a graduate of Delaware Academy in the Class of 1947 and in 1948 from Albany Business College. She was an administrative assistant for many years at the Delaware National Bank of Delhi.

She enjoyed membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi. Her many interests included painting, needlework, drawing, and volunteer work where she helped with craft and gift items for church functions.

She loved and was very devoted to her family which includes her husband, Lloyd, of 54 years; a son, Thomas Grant and his wife, Valerie Grant, of Delhi; a daughter, Karen Tyrrell and her husband, Jeffrey Tyrrell, of Dublin, Pa.; her grandchildren, Marcia Short, Stacey McClenon, Christopher Tyrrell, Ryan Tyrrell; and her great-grandchildren, Samantha Short and Jaylyn Short; also a brother, Thomas R. and his wife, Sandra McLean of Mountaintop, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, May 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Marion Hathaway and the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, May 2, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Cecelia Schroeder

WORCESTER — Cecelia P. Vajo Schroeder, 41, formerly of Cobleskill, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born April 11, 1963, in Brooklyn.

She is survived by her parents, Frank and Cecilia (Minich) Vajo; three brothers, and a sister, Frank and daughter, Erin and her mother, Debbie, Tom and Francie, Steven and Victoria, Ann and daughter, Emily and Stephen; a cousin, Brigitta Vajo; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Hungary.

Cecelia was predeceased by her son, Robert George Schroeder III.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the East Worcester Cemetery, State Highway 7, with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197 or to the Cobleskill Volunteer Emergency Squad, PO Box 452, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Antoinette Pierro

FOXBORO, Mass. — Antoinette Pierro, 90, of 101 No. 3 Hillcrest Road, Foxboro, Mass., died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Sharon.

She was born on June 28, 1913, the daughter of the late Sebastian Grande and Anastia (Baviello) Grande, in Boston, Mass. Formerly of East Boston, she was a resident of Foxboro for the past 36 years. She attended East Boston schools. She was a homemaker.

Antoinette and Joseph were married in 1934. Mr. Pierro is a retired compositor from The Boston Globe. He retired in 1979 after 40 years at The Globe.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Antoinette is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Pierro; two sons, William and his wife, Nancy Pierro, of Foxboro, Mass., and Robert Pierro of New York; three sisters, Frances Cauicchi of Arlington, Mass., Margareta Mellbye and Anne Grant, both of Nantucket, Mass.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Contributions in Mrs. Pierro's memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 700 Broadway St., Suite 810, Denver, CO 80203-3442.

Arrangements were private and were handled by Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St., Foxboro.

Burton L. Barnes

ONEONTA — Burton L. Barnes, 78, of Oneonta passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 8, 1926, in North Franklin, the son of Leslie and Eva Barnes.

He married Elsie Wagner on Aug. 31, 1950. She predeceased him on Jan. 16, 1995.

For many years, Burt owned and operated Burt's Refuse. He also operated a dairy farm with his wife, Elsie.

He was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church, North Franklin.

He is survived by his son, Larry B. Barnes of Oneonta; a brother, William Barnes of Treadwell; and two sisters, Eva Monroe of Oneonta, and Mildred Smith of Oneonta and Florida.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Mr. Richard Sliter, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
