Myron E. Gifford

SIDNEY — Myron Eugene Gifford, 81, of 1 Greenway, entered into eternal life April 29, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta. He joins his beloved wife, Eda Michaels Gifford, who predeceased him in November 1991.

He was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Oxford, son of the late Eugene J. and Marion Long Gifford. He had one brother, John Gifford, who predeceased him in 2003.

He graduated from Oxford Academy in 1941. He was then employed by Scintilla in Sidney as an inspector until, he went into the Army in 1942 for three years. He was stationed overseas and spent one year in New Guinea and one year in the Philippines as a medic. After returning home in 1946, he worked for Scintilla for a few months until he entered Hartwick College in Oneonta. In 1950, he graduated with a degree in business administration. In August of 1950, he was employed by the Bendix Corp. in Sidney as a production planning analyst where he worked until 1970. In 1971, he was employed by the Leatherstocking Corp. in Cooperstown as an accountant and remained there until he retired in August of 1992.

He is survived by two daughters, Cathy J. Green of Sidney and Susan L. Marin, of Bainbridge; one son, David A. Gifford of Sidney; and two sons-in- law, Terrence E. Green Jr. and Anselmo Marin. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert R. Wiswell II of Masonville, Ray E. Wiswell II of Mount Upton, Linda Eda Marin of Bainbridge and Matthew E. Green of Sidney; three great-grandchildren, Robert R. III and Cody and Trevor Wiswell, all of Masonville; and one special friend, Rosa Dutcher of Milford.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Funaro, pastor of Higher Ground Christian Church in Afton, will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the directions of C. H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

John Zitko

WORCESTER — John Zitko, 90, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, April 29, 2004. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Julia, of 66 years on April 18, 2004.

John was born Sept. 3, 1913, in Summit, Ill., the son of John and Mary (Recj) Zitko.

He was a graduate of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, Class of 1932.

John married Julia Davis on Sept. 11, 1937, in Worcester.

He was the area manager for Agway (formerly GLF) in Albany for 431/2 years.

John was a 32nd degree Mason with the Cobleskill Masonic Lodge No. 394. He received his first degree into Eastern Light Masonic Lodge No. 126 in Greene on Jan. 21, 1943. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons No. 277, Oneonta, past master of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592, past district deputy grand master of Otsego-Schoharie District, the Otsego Commandery KT No. 76, Schoharie County Shrine Club, the Kalurah Shrine in Binghamton, the Order of the Eastern Star, Schenevus Chapter 138, and First Presbyterian Church of Worcester. He was also a 14-year chair of the Worcester Committee for the Robinson Broadhurst Foundation.

He is survived by his three daughters, Sandra and husband, Vallance DeVisser, of Utica, Arlene and husband, Michael Josef, of Clifton Park, and Paulette and husband, Edward Nickerson, of Rome; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Cook and Rose Markley, both of Richmondville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Zitko, and a sister, Helen Walker.

The family is extremely grateful to Catskill Area Hospice and his loving caregivers during the past months.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, May 5, at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Worcester.

A Celebration of Life Service will follow at noon Wednesday with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, officiating. The Cobleskill Masonic Lodge No. 394 will participate in this service.

Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 396, Worcester, NY 12197 or to the Cobleskill Masonic Lodge No. 394, c/o Jerry Tryon, 145 Union St., Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Kenneth F. Miller

MARGARETVILLE — Kenneth F. Miller, 88, of Margaretville, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Huckleberry Brook, in the town of Middletown, to Fred and Annie (Frank) Miller.

Kenneth married Millicent (Missy) Place on Nov. 28, 1943. She died June 6, 1997.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served four years. He was stationed on a Navy destroyer in the North Atlantic and performed convoy escort duty. After the war, he became a partner in the store, L. Bussey and Co.

He attended schools in Huckleberry Hill and the Old Stone Schoolhouse. He graduated from Margaretville High School.

As a young man, Ken was an avid baseball player. He played professionally for several seasons for Rochester in the Canadian-American League and hit 20 home runs during his final season.

Ken was a civic-minded person who served as mayor of Margaretville from 1985 to 1992. He was a past member of the Margaretville Rotary Club, Margaretville Hospital board, Middletown American Legion Post 216 and Margaretville Masonic Lodge. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and loved to play golf.

He is survived by three nephews, Robert, William and Donald Barrett.

Friends may call Saturday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at the United Methodist Church of Margaretville, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating.

Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions, in memory of Kenneth F. Miller, may be made to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church of Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Phyllis M. Grant

DELHI — Phyllis M. Grant, 74, of Delhi died April 28, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Beerston, the daughter of Theodore and S. Amelia (Howland) McLean.

She married Lloyd Grant on Oct. 16, 1949, in Hamden Presbyterian Church, Hamden.

Mrs. Grant was a graduate of Delaware Academy in the Class of 1947 and in 1948 from Albany Business College. She was an administrative assistant for many years at the Delaware National Bank of Delhi.

She enjoyed membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi. Her many interests included painting, needlework, drawing and volunteer work, where she helped with craft and gift items for church functions.

She loved and was very devoted to her family, which includes her husband, Lloyd, of 54 years; a son, Thomas Grant and his wife, Valerie Grant, of Delhi; a daughter, Karen Tyrrell and her husband, Jeffrey Tyrrell, of Dublin, Pa.; her grandchildren, Marcia Short, Stacey McClenon, Christopher Tyrrell and Ryan Tyrrell; and her great-grandchildren, Samantha Short and Jaylyn Short; also a brother, Thomas R. and his wife, Sandra McLean, of Mountaintop, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, May 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway and the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, May 2, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with th MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Albeama Gabrosek

FLY CREEK — The Rite of Committal for Albeama E. Gabrosek, 74, who died April 19, 2004, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2004, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Russell Z. Nasholds

BERNE — Memorial services for Russell Z. Nasholds, 88, who died Feb. 19, 2004, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Berne. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Berne.

Arrangements are by Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont.

Paul Webber

COOPERSTOWN — Paul Jones Webber, 71, died suddenly on Friday morning, April 30, 2004, at his home in Cooperstown.

Paul was born on March 7, 1933, in Amityville, a son of Frank Samuel Webber and Gladys (nee Wilcox) Webber.

Raised on Long Island, he was a graduate of Bellport High School and later graduated from Syracuse University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering.

He married Joan Elizabeth Moger in New York City and, throughout their life together, they resided in Bellport, Long Island, Syracuse, and later in Stockton and Sergeantsville, N.J., and New Hope, Pa.

Following his retirement after a long career as a civil engineer in the private sector and with the Delaware River Basin Commission, Paul and Joan moved in July of 2001 to Cooperstown, a community that they fully embraced as home.

A lifelong athlete, Paul excelled as a track and field athlete throughout both his high school and university years and, most recently, participated as a gold medalist in the Senior Olympic Games.

His accomplishments as a fly fisherman along with an interest in antiques led him to found, publish and edit Antique Angler, a magazine dedicated to fishing collectibles, literature and art. Throughout his professional career and private life his concern for the environment induced him to participate actively as a member in like-minded organizations, including Trout Unlimited and, in the Cooperstown area, the Otsego Lake Association.

Of the Episcopal faith, Paul was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, where he had recently served on the Vestry.

Paul is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Judy Hobday and her husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C., and Debbi Lange of California; two sons, Brett Webber and his wife, Martine, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Gregg Webber of La Jolla, Calif.; one grandson, Ian Christopher Webber; and three brothers, Frank Webber and his wife, Lucille, of Cape Cod, Robert Webber and his wife, Eleanor, of Vermont, and Richard Webber and his wife, Linda, of Long Island.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today, May 3, 2004, in Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Samuel B. Abbott, interim rector, officiating. Immediately following the service, Paul's family will receive friends at a reception in the Sill Parish House at Christ Church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Otsego Land Trust Inc., 101 Main St. (Pioneer Alley), PO Box 173, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, Cooperstown.

Roger L. Kelley

CHERRY VALLEY — Roger L. Kelley, 74, passed away Friday, April 30, 2004, at the home of his cousin Robert and Jean Schermerhorn, in Cherry Valley.

He was born June 22, 1929, in Oneonta, the son of Claude and Grace (Schermerhorn) Kelley.

Roger worked on the family farm, "Lakeview Farm," with his brother, Lavern, and later with his nephew, Brian Schermerhorn.

Roger took pride in his collection of John Deere tractors. He enjoyed participating in the Roseboom Tractor Show.

He frequently walked on his farmland with family and friends. On these walks, Roger shared many family stories. It was also a family tradition to choose Christmas trees on his farm.

Roger is survived by his aunt, Esther Rohland of Schenectady; cousins, Robert and Jean Schermerhorn of Cherry Valley, Harold and Harriet Schermerhorn of Floral City, Fla., Chris and Gina Schermerhorn and family of Deansboro, and Brian Schermerhorn of Cherry Valley; and special friends, Bill and Barbara Sanders of Oneonta, and Jack and Norma Van Buren of Roseboom; as well as his friends and neighbors.

Roger was predeceased by his brother, C. Lavern Kelley.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Center Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until service time.

Contributions in Roger's memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

The family thanks the Hospice staff for their compassionate care.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Jennie Meeghan

STAMFORD — Jennie Meeghan, 94, of Cape Horn Road, Stamford, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at home, with her family at her side. She lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Frank Collins, who cared for her.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1909, in South Kortright, the daughter of Valentine and Laura (Kasmer) Swantak.

On May 20, 1935, she married John Meeghan. He predeceased her on Feb. 3, 1970.

Mrs. Meeghan was the cook for many years at South Kortright Rest Home for Minnie Wheeler and her daughter, Marion Joedicke, and in later years worked for Fred P. Murphy of Stamford.

Spending time with children and grandchildren as well as any children who came around was important to her. She loved cooking, gardening, crocheting and especially making afghans for her family and friends. She was well-known for her homemade rolls, and she loved berry picking and making jams.

She is survived by her children; four daughters, Mary and Vincent Trimbell of Bovina, Anna and Frank Collins of Stamford, Libby and Sam Miglianti of Hobart, and Marie and Ed Martin of South Kortright; two sons, Tommy and Alda Meeghan of Tennessee, Eddie and Barbara Meeghan of Wisconsin; her sisters, Anna and Earl Hotaling, Helen Sega, Mary Chapman; and a brother, Frank Swantak; and a beloved sister-in-law, Lila Swantak, who was very faithful and caring. She also had 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Sophie Cole, Antosia Oblinski, and Effie Rupershek and three brothers, Joe Swantak, Steve Swantak and Mike Swantak, all predeceased her.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Father Michael Cournoyer.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta or Stamford Emergency Squad, Stamford, NY 12167.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Hugh W. Vaughan

WELLS BRIDGE — A graveside committal service for Hugh W. Vaughan, 64, of Wells Bridge, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, will be on Friday, May 7, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with the Rev. David Steensma, pastor of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, officiating. Military honors will also be accorded by a contingent from the United States Navy.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Martha M. Odell

SIDNEY CENTER — A graveside service for Martha M. Odell, 95, who passed away Jan. 20, 2004, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt of Franklin Community Bible Church officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Gladys D. Frazier

FRANKLIN — A graveside committal service for Gladys D. Frazier, 97, of Franklin, who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Ida I. Backus

MOUNT UPTON — Committal services for Ida I. Backus, 84, of Mount Upton, who passed away March 11, 2004, in Oxford, will be held Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton, at 11 a.m., with Chaplain Kenneth Wilcox officiating.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Frank Orcutt

PLAINFIELD — Frank Orcutt, 76, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 1, 2004, at St. Luke's Home after a long illness with his family by his side.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1927, in Bridgewater, the son of Bennie and Vena Ingalls Orcutt. Frank received his education in Bridgewater schools.

Frank was married to Mary Alice Martin. They later divorced.

He was a dairy farmer on East River Road, Plainfield, a member of Bridgewater Congregational Church, Western Star Lodge No. 15, Free and Accepted Masons, Bridgewater Fire Department, the Men's Bowling Association, and Eastern Milk Producers Co-op.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Lindholm, Cooperstown, and Deborah and Terrance White, West Winfield; grandchildren, James, Scott, Nicole and Alexander Lindholm, Robert, Sandra, Meghan, Sarah, Kenneth, Samuel and Elizabeth Fish, Angela Bartlett, and Eric White; great-grandchildren, Skot and Gavin; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lois Decker of Leonardsville, and Diesta and Harry Wakefield of Chadwicks; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Wayne and Beverly of Florida, Neal and Emma of Bridgewater, Robert and Gail of Bridgewater, Agnes of Bridgewater, and Dorothy of Central Bridge; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Ray and Warren Orcutt.

The Orcutt family thanks the staff of St. Luke's Home, Barton West, for the care given to Frank.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, 365 West Main St., West Winfield. Fellow Masons from Western Star Lodge No. 15 will conduct ritualistic services, Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Bridgewater Congregational Church.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Unadilla Forks Fire Company and West Winfield Ambulance.
