Shirley M. Nalaskowski

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Shirley M. Nalaskowski, who died Jan. 1, 2004, will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Gary L. Howland

COBLESKILL — Gary L. Howland, 57, of Gardnersville Road died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 13, 1946, in East Worcester, the son of Donald and Marion (Germond) Howland.

Gary attended Worcester Central School and was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War from 1967 until his honorable discharge in 1969.

He was a farmer most of his adult life. For the past eight years, he was a herdsman at the Bates Farm in the Town of Seward.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Westcott) Howland, who he married Aug. 29, 1970; two daughters, Melanie Howland and Michelle Howland, both of Cobleskill; his mother, Marion Howland of Middleburgh; two sisters, Margot Hewitt of Bryan, Tex., and Myrna Bligh of Springville, two brothers, John Howland of Esperance and Melvin Howland of Hobart, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 6, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Gary Edmister of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmondville officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until noon, before the service.

Burial will be in Zion Rural Cemetery, Seward.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marathon for a Better Life, in care of Michelle Howland, 197 South Grand St., Cobleskill NY 12043.

Gertrude S. Hansen

SOUTH VALLEY — Graveside committal service and burial for Mrs. Gertrude S. Hansen, 101, who passed away Monday, April 5, 2004, at The Meadows, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Isabell V. Tessatore

ONEONTA — Isabell V. "Bella" Tessatore, 86, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at The Meadows.

She was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Oneonta, the daughter of Frank and Jennie (D'Ambrosina) Brienza.

She married Frank Tessatore on Sept. 6, 1949, in Pearl River. He predeceased her on Jan. 15, 1990.

As well as being a homemaker, Bella worked for many years as a waitress, primarily at Diana's and Molinari's in Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Women of the Moose, in which she was a Past Senior Regent.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Sandra and Jess Calhoun of Cooperstown and Darlene and Donald Cary Sr. of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Wayne Cook Jr. of Albany, Scott Calhoun of Pasco, Wash., and Donald Cary Jr. of Apopica, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, Wayne III, Shannon, and Kasie Cook, of Albany, Aja Frasier, Krista Montano, and Sara Calhoun, of Pasco, Wash., and a great-great-grandson, Aunjello Montano of Pasco, Wash. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Brienza of Oneonta, and a sister, Frances Brienza of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Brienza, and two sisters, Lucille Wehmeyer and Virginia Krpata.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home, one hour before the service on Thursday.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Emma L. Moore

MARYLAND — A graveside committal service for Emma L. Moore, who passed away on Jan. 13, 2004, in Stamford, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, with the Rev. Frank MacCracken Sr., and Frank MacCracken Jr. in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

A service by the Daughters of the American Revolution will also take place at graveside.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Edith E. Earl

SIDNEY — Graveside services for Edith E. Earl, who died Dec. 24, 2003, in Binghamton, will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004, in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, with the Rev. Craig Merritt, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Bertel A. Ahlqvist

MOUNT VISION — A committal service for Bertel A. Ahlqvist, who died on Feb. 11, 2004, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Mount Vision Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Albert Gugel

MORRIS — Albert Gugel Jr., 68, of Morris died Monday, May 3, 2004, at The Meadows, Middlefield.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1936, in Brooklyn, the son of Albert Gugel Sr. and Frieda (Kahrs) Gugel.

He was a lifelong area dairy farmer and enjoyed attending Empire Days and other farm related activities. He was well-known for his mechanical abilities and often would neglect his own work to come to the aid of his friends or relatives when they had problems.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a proud member of the Republican Party.

Albert is survived by his sister, Carolyn Brouse of Liverpool; two brothers, John Gugel of Falls Church, Va., and George Gugel of Hope, N.J.; three nephews, James Brouse of Macungie, Pa., Erik and Matthew Gugel, both of Hope, N.J.; one niece, Kaylyn Brouse of Liverpool; and a grandniece, Madisen Marie Brouse of Macungie, Pa. He is also survived by his special friends, Henry and Susie Montgomery.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2004, from noon until 2 p.m. at which time a funeral service will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp, of the Holmesville Baptist Church, officiating. Committal service and burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Gordon G. Ceperley

LANGHORNE, Pa. — Dr. Gordon Ceperley, 83, faithful "Abba Cep," entered into the presence of his Lord on April 15, 2004, following a years-long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Gordon was born and raised in Oneonta, the son of Clarence and Nathalie Ceperley, and the grandson of Andrew E. Ceperley, former mayor of Oneonta.

Gordon was educated in the local public schools and graduated from Oneonta High School.

He was an ordained Baptist minister, and he became the first full-time faculty member of Philadelphia Biblical University in 1949. Over the years he became known for his extensive understanding of the Middle East and Bible prophecy. He led more than 25 tours to Israel and lectured extensively in leading churches and Bible conferences.

In 1992, Dr. Ceperley was awarded PBU's first honorary doctorate and in 1996, he was named Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Ceperley, or "Abba Cep," as he was called, is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Titusville, N.J.; his brother, Florian of Charleston, W.Va.; and his four sons and their families, Timothy of Los Angeles, Calif., Jeffrey of Virginia Beach, Va., James of Philadelphia, Pa., and Andrew of San Diego, Calif.

A memorial celebration was held Saturday, April 24, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel on the Campus of Philadelphia Biblical University, 200 Manor Ave., Langhorne, PA 19047-2990.

In lieu of flowers, the Ceperley family suggests donations to Philadelphia Biblical University for the "Gordon Ceperley Memorial Fund," promoting biblical understanding with regard to Israel.

E. Irene P. Hogan

HOMOSASSA, Fla. — E. Irene Place Hogan, 99, of Homosassa, died May 2, 2004.

She moved from Oneonta to Homosassa in 1970.

She was born on June 27, 1904, in Otego, the daughter of Timothy E. and Mary Hogan.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Homosassa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Mr. James A. Hogan, March 9, 1994; and her sister, Mrs. Evelyn White.

She is survived by her two sons, James A. Hogan Jr., Inverness, Fla., and Anthony G. Hogan, Homosassa, Fla.; four daughters, Mary H. Shearer, Longwood, Fla., Esther Hall, Yarmouth, Maine, Marlene Browning, Beverly Hills, Calif., and Beatrice Utter, Otego; 26 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The Service of Remembrance for Mrs. E. Irene Place Hogan of Homosassa will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes, with Pastor Kurt Staudenraus officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Inverness Chapel.

Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Inverness.

Mildred Lipovsky

ONEONTA — A graveside committal service for Mildred Lipovsky, 56, of Oneonta, who passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas E. Stratton

HALCOTTSVILLE — Committal services for Thomas E. Stratton Sr., who died Feb. 5, 2004, will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Hugh VanBenschoten

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Hugh VanBenschoten, 74, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born on April 21, 1930, in the town of Warren, the son of Bruce and Marguarite (MacGeen) VanBenschoten.

On Aug. 17, 1958, he married Norma Goodspeed in the Fly Creek Methodist Church, Fly Creek.

Hugh worked for 42 years as a repairman at Van's TV in Richfield Springs until retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Fly Creek Valley Grange No. 790, the Pomona Grange No. 16, and the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department. He liked to fool around with electronics.

Survivors include his wife, Norma VanBenschoten, of East Springfield; two sons, Mark and his wife, Joy VanBenschoten, of Syracuse, and Alan and his wife, Betty VanBenschoten, of Burlington Flats; a daughter, Karen VanBenschoten of Racine, Wis.; two grandsons, Steven Morgan and David Morgan.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Bruce and Theron; and a sister, Lela.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 10, 2004, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Highfield officiating, at the Ottman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center. Calling hours will be from 9 to 11 a.m. preceding the service at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. VanBenschoten's memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

William L. Burr

HARTWICK — William L. Burr Sr., 68, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born in Watertown on Jan. 7, 1936, a son of George and Marjorie (Golden) Burr.

After graduating from high school in Watertown, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bill moved to Illinois to work at various jobs after his discharge. He moved to Walton, and attended SUNY Delhi, where he received his LPN in nursing.

On Jan. 27, 1983, he married Mary J. Chase in Fly Creek.

Bill worked at The Meadows until a disability forced him to retire.

Bill enjoyed going up north for fishing and camping. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, building model cars and ships, and video games. He was a big fan of NASCAR. His favorite drivers were Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Kevin Harvick. Bill also loved all his pets and animals.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, of Hartwick; four daughters, Colleen Archer of Walton, Peggy Davis of Arizona, Brenda Jeffers of Cortland, and Tammy Lent of Walton; a son, William L. Burr Jr. of Schenevus; three stepdaughters, Theresa Parshall of Westford, Delilah Bouck of Belvedere Lake, Roseboom, and Shirley Rupert of Newark Valley; two stepsons, Frank Parshall of Hartwick, and David Parshall of Richfield Springs; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; two sisters, Sharon Neer of Illinois, and Ida Otterman of Conklin; a brother, David Burr of Illinois; and a daughter-in-law, Sue Burr of Walton.

Calling hours with the family in attendance will be from noon to the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Ron Fralick, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley, officiating. Burial will follow at Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Debra V. Rossman

SCHENEVUS — Debra V. Rossman, 43, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at her home peacefully.

She was born Dec. 6, 1960, in Worcester, the daughter of Richard and Volneta (Strobeck) Stannard.

To everyone that knew Deb, she was a loving and an uplifting person, who left her door open to anyone that needed nurturing or support. It was her compassion that led her to become a home health aide, which she was devoted to for several years.

She is survived by her husband, James L. Rossman, of Schenevus; her daughter, Sheila, and husband, Raymond Minser, of Worcester; her son, Jeremiah Rossman, and Jessica Beams of West Davenport; parents, Richard and Volneta Stannard of Davenport; sister, Darlene and Paul Brownell of Cooperstown; brothers, Daniel Stannard and Velma Kelley of Davenport, Duane and Rose Stannard of Stamford, Dominick and Karen Stannard of Jefferson, Darrell and Ann Marie Stannard of Davenport; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, and also close friend Wendy Guile.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Floyd and Ida Strobeck, and an uncle, Moxham Strobeck.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Frank Amatuccio

OTEGO — Frank A. Amatuccio, 73, of Otego died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born May 14, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of Frank and Mary (Civita) Amatuccio.

He married Ann Greenman on April 4, 1959, in Oneonta. Frank served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War.

For several years he worked for the D&HRR, as well as in later years for Lyncoach. He also was an independent trucker and courier for A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He also enjoyed stock car races, and the special times spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Amatuccio, of Otego; his children and their spouses, Donna and Bob Harris of Lowell, Mass., Laurie Lindroth and her significant other, Mike Amatuccio of Laurens, Carol Billiter of Washington state, Cindy and Pat O'Donnell of Oneonta, Ralph and Donna Amatuccio of Franklin, Frank and Emily Amatuccio of Otego, and James and Joy Amatuccio of Otego; his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Dorothy Amatuccio of Otego; a sister and brother-in-law, Noreen and Ernie Feola of Sidney; an aunt, Frances Russell of Oneonta; 27 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Charles Amatuccio, and a granddaughter, Brianna Rose Amatuccio.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, May 7, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George R. Hyde

MORRIS — George Raymond Hyde Sr., 91, of Morris died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1913, in Champagne, Ill, the son of Charles B. and Lottie (McKee) Hyde.

He married Vivian Keppie on Sept. 19, 1937, in Yonkers, a marriage of 67 years. Vivian died April 20, 2004.

In Ray's younger years he worked in a defense plant in Philadelphia and later as a caretaker in Connecticut before coming to Morris, where he was employed by the Manor House Farms as their caretaker and head gardener for over 43 years.

He was a former member of the Elks Club of Oneonta and also a longtime member of the Morris Rotary Club. He had served as president and past member of the Morris Board of Education.

Ray is survived by his children, George Raymond Hyde Jr. of Morris, Wesley Hyde and wife, Roseanne, of Denver, Colo., and Loretta Exline of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Hyde of Cape Cod, and Joseph of North Carolina; and a sister, Rosemond Adams of Bella Vista, Ark.

He was predeceased by his wife, Vivian; a grandson, Michael Hyde; and a granddaughter, Michelle Hyde.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris on Friday, May 7, 2004, from noon until 2 p.m. at which time a funeral service will be held with the Rev. Ann Blair, of the United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery at the convenience of the family and will be private.

It is the families request, that in lieu of flowers, friends make contributions to the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory. Envelopes for this purpose are available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
