Elizabeth Ward

EDMESTON — Elizabeth (Betty) Ward passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Yonkers, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Hutira) Sterusky.

She married Milton D. Ward on June 15, 1947, at the Lutheran Church in Little Falls. He predeceased her on Jan. 29, 1998.

Betty retired from NYCM Insurance Company in Edmeston after many devoted years of service. Her first employment was at Otsego School, West Street, Edmeston. After her marriage to Milton, she became a lifelong dairy farmer. Betty and Milton enjoyed traveling during their retirement years and celebrated their 50th anniversary with a trip to Alaska.

In her early years, she was an active member of the Edmeston Home Bureau and later the Edmeston Hobby Club. Most recently, Betty doted on her dog, Jodi, and her cats, Inky and Mew-Mew.

Betty is survived by her children and their spouses, Connie and Henry Gregory, Brian and Dalynn Ward, and Laurie and Lenny Melillio; eight grandchildren, Shad Gregory and his companion, Kendra Chapman, Seth Gregory and his companion, Jennie Terrill, Christopher Ward, Kelly Ward and her fiance, Thomas Moyer, Rochelle Loomis, Megan Moore and her companion, Preston Bryant, Kyle Moore and his companion, Courtney Weir, and Cory Moore; great-grandchildren, Ashley Ward, Madison Bryant and Derek Moore; her sister, Millie Merrifield and her husband, Frank; and her recent caregivers, Bonnie, Charlotte, Theresa, Blanche and Sue.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston. Calling hours will be held from noon until 2 p.m. before the service on Saturday. Interment will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Betty's memory to either Saint John's Lutheran Church or the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

John Mednansky

LAURENS — Graveside committal services with military honors for John Mednansky, who died Feb. 11, 2004, will be held in the Laurens Village Cemetery on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 10:30 a.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Leland Sheldon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside service for Leland Earl "Windy" Sheldon, 94, who died on March 16, 2004, will be held on Friday, May 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. in Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, officiating. Members of the Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 F.&A.M. are asked to meet at the cemetery for ritualistic services at 2 p.m.

Charles R. LaFever

BOVINA CENTER — Friends are invited to attend graveside committal services for Charles R. LaFever, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15, in the Bovina Cemetery, Bovina Center. The Rev. Scott Conrad, pastor of the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Mr. LaFever, 72, retired Town of Bovina Supervisor, passed away Jan. 24, 2004.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

James E. Laboda

ONEONTA — There will be a committal service for James E. Laboda, who passed away Oct. 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch presiding, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Thomas Kennedy

MILFORD — Military and committal services for Thomas H. Kennedy Jr., who died Jan. 9, 2004, will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Milford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Antonio Orlando

COOPERSTOWN — Graveside and committal services for Antonio Orlando, who died March 14, 2004, will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 1 p.m. in Lakewood Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Roger A. Hawley

NORWICH — Roger A. Hawley, born Oct. 11, 1930, 73, passed away May 11, 2004, at his home in Norwich.

Roger was a lifelong resident of Binghamton. As a young man he was enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a painter by trade and worked for many years for Broome County.

Mr. Hawley is survived by Elizabeth Hawley, mother of his four beautiful children, Lucinda (Cindy) Neer and husband, Joseph, of Morris, Allen Hawley and wife, Joyce, of the town of Binghamton, Henry Hawley and wife, Cathy, of the town of Binghamton, Walter Hawley and wife, Cheryl, of the town of Harpursville. His wife, Mary Anne, and two stepsons, Leslie K. Floyd and wife, Rose, of the city of Norwich, and Michael K. Floyd of the city of Bay Point, Calif., also survive him. Also surviving are his sister, Della Adams of Owego; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Roger's family and many friends will miss a dear father and friend who could always seem to make you smile with his sense of humor and practical jokes.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the DeMunn Funeral Home, 36 Conklin Ave., Binghamton, with the Rev. David C. Seaver, Chaplain of Spiritual Care at Lourdes Hospital, officiating. Burial at Hawleyton Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the DeMunn Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chenango County Hospice, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family through www.demunn.com.

Beatrice Fancher

CONESVILLE — Beatrice A. Fancher, 93 years, of Conesville passed away on May 10, 2004, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

She was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Conesville, daughter of the late Elmer and Margaret (Fredenburgh) Merwin.

Beatrice was homemaker and was the tax collector for the Town of Conesville for more than 20 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Conesville Volunteer Fire Company, and a member of the Conesville United Methodist Church.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Chauncey Ballard, and second husband, Leland R. Fancher; four sisters, Mabel, Elsie, Rose and Hazel; and two brothers, John and Nelson.

Surviving are her two sons, Forrest Ballard and his wife, June, and Lawrence L. Fancher and his wife, Sandy, all of Conesville. She is also survived by six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, NY 12083. Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interment was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.

Those who wish may contribute in Beatrice's memory to the Conesville Rescue Squad.

Shival V. MacWan

SCHENEVUS — Shival V. MacWan, 92, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Beverley Furey, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Schenevus Cemetery.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 Co. Hwy. 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Emily S. Baxter

HERKIMER — Emily S. Baxter "Tess," 80, formerly of Cherry Valley, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday afternoon, May 12, 2004, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1923, in Little Falls, the daughter of the late Jay and Cora Patterson Doxstader. A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Dolgeville and graduated from Dolgeville High School. She furthered her education at Excelsior Business School, Utica, plus training in Real Estate Appraisal and Business Management.

Emily was first married to Michael Sedor. From 1947 to 1962, they owned and operated Sedor's Sporting Goods Store in Dolgeville. From 1964 until 1969, she sold real estate under the name of Sedor's Realty in the town of Maryland.

She also had served as chairman of the Board of Assessors, filling the vacancy created by her husband's untimely death in 1973, as well as assessor for the town of Maryland. She had later served as town clerk for the town of Sharon Springs.

On Aug. 29, 1975, she married Roland J. Baxter in the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church. Mr. Baxter passed away on June 19, 1977.

In later years, Emily worked as a waitress at the Tryon Inn in Cherry Valley, retiring in 1996. Mrs. Baxter has resided at Folts Homes since March of this year, coming from the Country Manor on Middleville Road in the town of Herkimer.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, Wiontha Rebekah Lodge, Schenevus Valley Grange and an honorary life member of the Dolgeville Rod and Gun Club Inc.

Emily will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person. She lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and was specially known for her great cooking. She will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

Surviving are two stepsons, Thomas Baxter of Sharon Springs, and Bruce and his wife, Debra Baxter, of Cobleskill; one stepdaughter, Linda and her husband, Bernard Floor, of Syracuse and Florida; two brothers and their wives, Emory John and Nila Doxstader and Donald and June Doxstader, all of Dolgeville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husbands, Michael and Roland, two brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

It was Mrs. Baxter's wish that services be private and at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Marjorie E. Butler

ANDES — Marjorie E. Butler, 81, of Andes passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1922, at the family farm on Palmor Hill, Andes, the daughter of Fred Ruff and Mabel Worden.

She was married to Donald Butler; he predeceased her in July 1986.

She was employed as a welder during World War II at Scintilla in Sidney, where she retired from and then worked as a cook for Countryside Residential Care Center, Delhi, Allen Center at South Kortright, and the Andes Central School in the cafeteria.

She spent most of her life in Andes. She graduated from Andes Central School in 1941, and Delhi Ag. Tech College with a dietitian certification.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Andes, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women; Andes Public Library and the Andes Village Board.

She loved sports and played basketball in high school, she enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves baseball team. She also enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and antiques.

Marjorie made a home for special challenged adults. She was a person known for her compassion, sense of humor, loving way, great faith and strong spirits through all her hardships in life.

Marjorie is survived by two stepsons, Roger and Rhett Butler; stepgranddaughter, Jackie Butler; two brothers, William and Melvin Ruff; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet O'Connor and Carolyn Ruff.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Andes, with the Rev. Martha Vink officiating. Committal service will be private.

Contributions in memory of Marjorie E. Butler may be made to the Activity Fund at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Henrietta Eden

TREADWELL — A graveside committal service for Henrietta Eden, 83, of Treadwell, who passed away on Nov. 14, 2003, will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Monty Hitchcock

MERIDALE — Monty H. Hitchcock, 54, of Meridale passed away Thursday morning, May 13, 2004, at his home.

The son of the late Harry and Gertrude Mary (Utter) Hitchcock, he was born Jan. 20, 1950, in Oneonta, was a 1968 graduate of Delaware Academy, and married Roxanne Boughton, Feb. 15, 1969, in Meredith.

Employed more than 30 years at Delwood/DMV, Fraser, until failing health forced his retirement last month, Monty was a Delhi resident most of his life, where he played trumpet and was one of the original members of the former Community Band.

He moved to Meridale five years ago, where he was a member of the Fire Department Fire Police, served on the Board of Fire Commissioners; a member of the International Benchrest Shooter's Association; New York State Maple Producers Association; and owner of "Sweet & Sticky Farms," producing maple syrup since 1986.

He cherished time with his grandchildren, also enjoying hunting, fishing, golf, and maintaining a large vegetable garden.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Roxanne Hitchcock, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Sommer Hitchcock of Stamford, and Bradley and Diane Hitchcock of Delhi; six grandchildren, Jordan, Austin, Hunter, Jessica, Ashley and Mollie; a sister, Donna (Richard) Hitt of Bloomville; a brother, Wyatt Hitchcock of Delhi; his mother-in-law, Rose Boughton of Meridale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 16, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, by the Rev. Bert More. Private burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Carol B. Ihrie

SIDNEY — Carol Bartholomew Ihrie, 85, of Sidney passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born April 12, 1919, in Cranberry Lake.

Carol married Merle L. Ihrie on Nov. 23, 1939. He predeceased her on March 27, 1987.

She was a very active member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney, a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 255, Sidney, and worked tirelessly for the village of Sidney in the Fire Department Auxiliary, the Historical Society, the library and many community projects.

Carol was strong, loving, adaptable and optimistic and will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 2 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland of the United Methodist Church of Sidney officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will held Monday, May 17, 2004, at 9 a.m. in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to your favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

John J. Sheldon

SUSSEX, N.J. — John J. "Butch" Sheldon, 38, Sussex, and formerly of Walton, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Sheldon was born in Glen Ridge, N.J., and had resided in Walton for 10 years, moving back to Sussex four years ago.

Mr. Sheldon was a 1983 graduate of High Point Regional High School. He was active in Regional Tractor Pull Competitions. Mr. Sheldon was a welder/fabricator for R & R Transport in Succasunna.

Mr. Sheldon was predeceased by his father, John J. Sheldon in 1982.

Mr. Sheldon was the beloved husband of Kelly (nee Coad); cherished son of Elizabeth Sheldon, Caldwell, N.J.; loving brother of Christopher Sheldon, Caldwell, N.J., Suzanne Sheldon Tighe, Portland, Maine, and Andrea Sheldon, Verona, N.J.; caring stepfather of John Torchia at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third St., Sussex. Interment will follow at Frankford Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Neuro Special Care Unit, care of Morristown Memorial Hospital, 100 Madison Ave., Morristown, NJ 07962.

Funeral arrangements are by the Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third St., Sussex.

Patricia Skoglund

MORRIS — Patricia Skoglund, 73, of Morris died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born in Jamaica on June 4, 1930, the daughter of Walter and Ann (O'Hare) Wessel.

She married Howard (Bud) Skoglund on March 4, 1949, at the Community Church in West Laurens.

She had resided in the Morris area since 1952 and was a beautician in her younger years. She most recently had been employed by Morris Central School as a teacher's assistant.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris.

Pat is survived by her husband, Howard (Bud) Skoglund of Morris; her children, Patricia Wilson and husband, George, of Newport News, Va., Cathleen Distefano and husband, John, of Morris, Peter Skoglund and companion Eileen Hitchcock of Unadilla; sisters, Bobby Pickett and husband, Harley, of Florida, Mickey May and husband, Dan, of Virginia; a brother, Bub Wessel and wife, Cassie, of Alabama; her grandchildren, Steve, Kelly, Jody, Allison, Rob, Mike, Kristen, Lisa and Sonya; and her great-grandchildren, Zoe and Julianna.

She was predeceased by a sister, Linda.

It was Pat's request that no calling hours or funeral service be held.

Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory and graveside committal services in Hillington Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
